Michael, a 58-year-old man, lives in one of the most magical places in the world, Honolulu, Hawaii, which is known as an ideal vacation spot for most Americans. He gets to call this place home. But he has difficulty finding a regular place to live in. Being a homeless man, he usually sleeps on the streets and beaches of Honolulu.

Michael has an interest in baseball, so he often takes advantage of the wonderful weather to play baseball. That’s how he earns him the nickname “Baseball Michael”. Many of his friends know where to find him — in the former Heald College parking garage (停车场). There, he practices his skills, in the hope of making it big one day.

Several days ago, when Michael was hitting some baseballs, he lost one in a narrow gap between the parking garage and a drug store next door. He kept on playing. After losing a total of six balls, he decided to go down to get them. The gap was so narrow that he wasn’t sure whether he could squeeze in (挤进去). But realizing those baseballs were his only possessions, he finally made up his mind to have a try.

Michael made his way down the gap, but things turned tricky. He saw it was narrow at the bottom but he thought he was thin enough to enter it. Moments later, he let out an “uh oh”. Beyond his expectation, the space was too small for him to fit. However, he kept going with his eyes on his baseballs. He whispered, “Don’t give up. They are all I have.”

As Michael went down a little lower and lower, he realized that there was no way to return. He had to wait for somebody to rescue him. As he didn’t bring his mobile phone along, he had to shout as loudly as he could. However, there was no one answering him. Half an hour later, he felt extremely thirsty. He was very tired and afraid that he could no longer hold on. Just when he was about to give up, he heard the sound of footsteps was approaching.

The Broken Window

George Ellet had a bright silver dollar for a New-year gift. He thought of all the fine things he might buy with it.

The ground was all covered with snow; but the sun shone out bright, and everything looked beautiful.

So George put on his hat, and ran into the street. As he went skipping along, he met some boys throwing snowballs. George soon engaged in the sport.

He sent a ball at James Mason, but it missed him, and broke a window on the other side of the street.

George feared someone would come out of the house and find him. So he ran off as fast as he could.

As soon as he got round the next corner, George stopped, because he was very sorry for what he had done.

He said to himself, “I have no right to spend my silver dollar, now. I ought to go back, and pay for the glass I broke with my snowball.”

He went up and down the street, and felt very sad. He wished very much to buy something nice. He also wished to pay for the broken glass.

At last he said, It was wrong to break the window, though I did not mean to do it.

I will go and pay for it, if it takes all my money, I will try not to be sorry. I do not think the man will hurt me if I pay for the mischief I have done.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I had stopped at the Swindon services (服务区) while on my way back to London. As I drove up the slip road, I spotted a man with a backpack and his thumb (拇指) out. I pulled over and lowered the window.

“Which way are you heading?” I asked. “I’m going back to London.”

“Ah, that would be grand,” came his immediate reply. He opened the door and lifted his backpack on to the back seat. “I’m Brendan,” he said with an easy smile and a rich Irish tongue. “I was getting a bit desperate. I've had my thumb out for a day and half. Nobody seems to stop these days.”

“I haven’t eaten in days,” said Brendan. “I’m trying to get home.”

I’ve always enjoyed picking up hitchhikers (搭便车的人). I used to be a motoring journalist and crossed the country in various test cars. Picking up a hiker always made me feel a little less guilty about all the miles I was doing.

As we headed cast along the motorway, Brendan told me how he came to be waiting for a lift on that particular evening, and also about the two recent family tragedies that had ruined him and pushed him out of his old life and on to the road.

Brendan told me that he was 52. He laughed a lot and enjoyed his off-grid (不入网的) lifestyle. Until last week, that is, when he’d been mugged (抢劫).

“Three young men in Birmingham took my other pack and it had all my money in it. I’ve been sleeping out since then. I haven’t eaten in days. I’m hoping to get some casual work in London, so I can then get myself home to Ireland.”

It must have been the concept of home that got me, and helping a man who'd clearly had a tough time seemed like the right thing to do.

The King’s Guard is known for being stoic (坚忍的) and calm. Even with thousands of tourists stopping by Buckingham Palace to take photos beside them, they are seldom seen breaking the rules. However, a little boy dressed as a soldier received reply from the guards when he raised his hand during their march.

A 9-year-old boy, unfortunately, is a boy with Down syndrome (唐氏综合征) , but he is also lucky. He has a loving, good-tempered and strong family. They wanted him to be a self- loving and self-reliant person. The attempts of his family were at work, and he grew up to be a good boy with a kind heart and some self-care ability.

One day, the boy and his families visited Buckingham Palace. He showed great interest in the King’s Guard, especially the King’s Guard clothes. He thought they were stoic and he wanted to be a real soldier like the King’s Guard.

“Mom, can I wear a perfect copy of the King’s Guard clothes and march with them? Just beside ... ?”

“No, you can’t march with them. They stand for our country and people,” his father said with a smile.

Hearing that, the boy’s eyes were filled with tears and said, “I just want to march with them beside their area and raise my hand to show my respect.”

His parents were regretful and said sorry to him. And their parents told him they decided to meet his need. He was very excited.

“How about next weekend?” the boy said.

“No problem!” his mom answered.

Next weekend, the boy was wearing a perfect copy of the King’s Guard clothes with a bright red jacket, white belt and black hat. He waited for the King’s Guard to move forward.

Once upon a time, in a quiet countryside, there lived a humble farmer with a heart as vast as his fields. He had a litter of adorable puppies that he needed to find new homes for. One sunny morning, he decided to paint a sign advertising the puppies and set off to nail it to a post at the edge of his yard.

As he hammered in the last nail, he felt a small hand pulling at his clothes. Looking down, he saw the sincere eyes of a little boy looking up at him. The boy said. “Sir. I want to buy one of your puppies.”

The farmer, wiping the sweat from his face, replied, “Well, these puppies come from fine parents and costa good deal of money.” The boy’s head drooped (下垂) for a moment, but he reached into his pocket and pulled out a handful of change, holding it up to the farmer. “I’ve got 89 cents. Is that enough at least to take a look?”

The farmer’s heart warmed, and he smiled, saying, “Of course.” He then let out a whistle (口哨), calling, “Here, Dolly!” With that, a charming sight appeared as Dolly and her four adorable pups rushed out from the doghouse and down the slope. The little boy pressed his face against the fence, his eyes dancing with delight.

As the four puppies approached the fence, the boy noticed something moving inside the doghouse. Slowly, another little fur ball appeared, obviously smaller than the others, It wobbled (摇晃) down the slope, doing its best to catch up. The boy was very excited, and he pointed to the puppy, saying, “I want that one.”

The farmer, however, knelt down at the boy’s side and gently said, “Son, you won’t want that puppy. He will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would.”

Have you ever been misunderstood (误解) by someone you care about? In my first year in high school, I had a good friend. We got along with each other very well and we often talked about our life and discussed the problems we had in school. We always shared our joys and sadnesses.

Every time I was in a bad mood (心情) or didn’t do well on a test, she would encourage me and make me feel relieved. I also listened to her patiently when she got into trouble. We cared about each other so much that we thought of each other as part of our families. Both of us had the same interest in our free time. We enjoyed enriching our knowledge by reading articles in many different fields on blogs on the Internet. And blogging also became one of the important ways for us to communicate with each other. Sometimes we would post something that we weren’t willing to say face to face on our blogs. And the next time we turned on the computer, we would know what had happened to each other these days and also understand each other more through the blog.

But one night I got an e-mail from her. In it she told me that she felt very disappointed with me and she didn’t want to be my friend anymore! I was very shocked at that time and had no idea about what had made her so angry. So I called her back immediately, but no one answered the phone. I was so confused and didn’t know what to do. I thought about the last time we had chatted with each other and couldn’t find anything wrong. So I turned on my computer and read her blog, hoping to figure out what had happened to her. Suddenly, when I read an article about some other friends, I realized what had gone wrong.

One pleasant New-year morning, Edward rose, and washed and dressed himself in a hurry. He wanted to be first to wish a happy New Year to his family. He turned up at every door of the house, and shouted the words of “Happy New Year” in an excited voice. After a quick breakfast, he hopped along the street like a happy bird, greeted and repeated the words to those he met.

When he came back, his father gave him 50 dollars, saying he could buy whatever he had been wishing for. His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some interesting books that he had seen at the bookstore. He thanked his father and danced out of the house again with a light heart, wanting to buy those books.

As he ran down the street, he noticed a poor German family, the father, mother, and three children trembling with cold. “I wish you a happy New Year,” said Edward, as he was happily passing on. The man took a look at the happy boy and shook his head sadly.

Edward stopped and said, “It seems that you do not belong to this country” The man again shook his head, a confused expression appeared over his face, for he could not understand or speak English.

But the poor man pointed to his mouth, and to the children with hungry looks, as if to say, “These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time.”

Edward quickly understood that these poor people were in difficult situation.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Many years ago, after my college graduation, I finally took a job as the head coach at a school in Baxley, Georgia. It was a small school with a weak football program.

It was a tradition for the school’s old team to play against the new team at the end of spring practice and then autumn practice. The old team had no coach, and they didn’t even practice to prepare for the game. Being the coach of the new team, I was excited because I knew we were going to win. After all, my team attended at least one training session each week during the spring months, and I was delighted to see that they had mastered the basic skills such as short pass, cross pass, and man-for-man marking (盯人防守), more importantly, learning to team up with others. They trained hard and wanted to win the game. But to our great disappointment, we were defeated by the old team which seemed to be bound to lose!

I couldn’t believe we had got into such a situation. My team was as embarrassed and depressed as I, lowering their heads and dragging their feet out of the football field. When I gathered them together to reflect why we lost the game, some students complained, “In a small school with a weak football program, failure is due!”   Other students said that they didn’t have enough time to make full preparations for it.

Listening to their reflection, I was lost in deep thought. Suddenly, a saying occurred to me, “Winners are made, not born.” My team might not be the number one team in Georgia, but they were depending on me. I had to change my attitude about their ability and potential. Instead of seeing my boys as losers, I should push and encourage them. I should also help them to see themselves differently, and build themselves into winners.

Sean turned to look at his father, who was standing confidently on his new sailboat. Sean hated it that he couldn’t remember all of the sailing terms (术语) and skills his dad taught him. However, he pushed himself to ask, expecting his father’s response. “Which way are we turning?” “We’re coming about” his father said firmly. “That means we are turning into the wild. That way.” His father said, pointing to the right side of the boat. “Time for you to make a bowline knot (单套结)!”

Sean reached for a rope and tried his best to make one. His father had taught him the skill dozens of times, which could not only help moor (停泊) the boat but also save everyone in emergency. After practising several times, he finally knew how to do this correctly and quickly. He looked back at his father, hoping for a praise. But his dad was looking up at the sail (帆), not at him. He untied the knot and dropped the rope under the seat, filled with a sense of loss.

He looked up at the sky. Dark clouds gathered overhead and the wind began blowing. “Hey, Sean, come and take the wheel for a minute!” His father ordered. Sean didn’t want to, not did he want to see that disappointing look on his father’s face. “Uh, year!” Sean locked the sail in place and went to keep the wheel.

“Just keep her going straight. I’m going to check something.” Sean held the wheel tightly. Suddenly, the wind changed direction. The boat shook sharply and even tipped (倾斜) to one side. “Dad!” he called, but no response. He didn’t see him anywhere on the sailboat. Just then, the water became calm a little. Sean caught the chance to look the wheel quickly. He looked out at the huge crashing waves. Then he saw it--- a flash of a figure.
