1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The Great Field Day

The sun was shining brightly on the day of the big school field day. All the kids from different schools gathered for a day of fun games and activities. As I looked around, I noticed Molly, a small girl standing all by herself on the side of the field.

Feeling curious, I walked up to Molly and asked why she wasn’t playing with the other kids. She usually had a big smile, but today she looked a bit sad. After a little pause, she told me she decided not to join in. I wondered why, as she had been excited about this day for a long time.

Feeling a bit worried, I had a chat with the person in charge and found out that Molly was worried about not being as fast or strong as the other kids. The person in charge thought it was best to let Molly choose whether to play or not.

Trying to cheer her up, I told Molly that she had her own-special qualities, and if she wanted to play, what others thought didn’t matter. Molly, still unsure, decided to give it a shot and joined me, looking a bit shy. I whispered, “It’s your choice. Don’t let what others think stop you. Your preparation is what counts the most.” Molly took a deep breath and turned to me with watery eyes.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

As a substitute teacher, my daily routine involves driving to a new school almost every day so I’m usually unable to anticipate the day’s events, good or bad!

On one particular day, I was teaching in a very difficult classroom.I was managing behavior all morning and by lunch time, I knew I needed coffee to even consider surviving the afternoon. So on my lunch break, I drove to a nearby plaza (购物中心) to get a cup of coffee.Upon returning to the car I realized I had locked my keys and my phone inside! I had about 15 minutes to get back to the school which was a good 5minute drive away.I considered rushing back, but it was winter, and I thought a nasty fall on ice would only make the situation much worse.

So I ran into a McDonald’s which was in the same plaza and asked the man at the counter who happened to be the manager.I briefly explained my situation to him, and I could tell by the look in his eyes, that he empathized. He hurried to the back to use the phone while I paced in the restaurant.I had less than 10 minutes to get back to my school at this point.

The manager returned only to tell me that the cab company had put him on hold and then the line got disconnected, and that he was now on hold again, but had not yet been able to request the cab yet.My expression, I assume, began to resemble some combination of hopelessness and fear.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Edward is a middleaged man. Although he was not born in a rich family, he was raised well by his father and mother. His father owned a clothes shop, and used to work for more than 12 hours a day, so that his family could lead a comfortable life.

However, Edward’s father could not earn sufficient money to provide a decent life for his family. Edward was an average student at school, and used to score around 70 percent marks. Edward’s dream was to become a lawyer. Since his marks weren’t very high, he could not get the desired course that he wanted to study. Instead, he joined a bachelor’s degree course, completed the course successfully, and got a job in a company.

While his life was going on with no dramatic change, his father continued to work in his clothes shop, so that he did not have to depend on Edward. After getting a permanent job, Edward’s parents wanted him to marry. He got married to a girl from his native town, and at the same time was also promoted in his job. After a few years, his wife gave birth to beautiful twin boys.

Later Edward began to earn a handsome salary, and started to live luxuriously. He bought a new house and a new car. Some of the luxuries were really unnecessary. Although his company provided him with a car, Edward went and purchased a new car.

After a luxurious lifestyle that spanned for almost 6 to 7 years, Edward was suffering from financial crisis and was not able to pay for the children’s education and other basic necessities.

His father fell sick, and as a result, could not continue his work in the clothes shop. He requested Edward to provide some money for his treatment and other household expenses.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Linda went for a job interview at a firm that had several start-up businesses under its wing. She applied to be Executive Secretary of the CEO, but her chance of getting the job was slim because she came in late for the interview.

“I’m truly sorry I have come late, sir,” Linda apologized. “But I had an emergency to attend to earlier today and that is why I couldn’t make it on time. I hope you can give me a chance,” she added. “But the job is to be my secretary and being late for your interview is just not good,” George, the CEO, told her. “I’m sorry, but I won’t be able to hire you.” Depressed, Linda left.

When Linda got home, her son Jack found that something seemed to be bothering his mom. Then he asked, “What’s wrong, Mom? How did the job interview go?” “I didn’t get the job, son. I didn’t make it in time for the interview,” she sighed. Jack was almost crying upon hearing this, but Linda tired to comfort him. “It’s all right, son. There are many other jobs I can apply for. It’s no big deal,” she said, hugging him.

The following day, Jack copied the address from his mother’s notebook and came to George’s office without telling his mom. “Hi, sir, I’m Jack. My mom came for an interview yesterday, but you rejected her. Could you please give her a second interview, sir?” he said to the CEO.

“Why should I give her another chance?” George asked. “It was because of my fault that she didn’t make it on time. I accidentally dropped some food juice on my shirt. She had to wash it because it was the only uniform that I could wear in school. It took a while to remove the stain (污渍), so she was late,” Jack said.

“My mom works hard, sir. My parents once ran a cleaning supply and equipment business. Owing to something unexpected, the company was closed down. My parents had to start all over again,” Jack continued.

George listened thoughtfully and began to feel sorry for Linda. He thought the position of Marketing Director would better suit Linda since she had relevant experience. Then he told Jack that he would give his mom a second chance.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I still remember the winter of 1933 for a gift which made three girls happy.

Life was hard then, with lots of folks finding themselves penniless. When my shoes got holes, my dad just cut a piece of cardboard to slip inside them.

Maxine, my best friend, and I were in the choir. Then the principal, Mr. Robert announced a gift exchange among all the students. We each pulled a slip of paper with a name on it from a box. “Now don’t tell anyone whose name you got,” Mr. Robert reminded us. “This will be such a surprise!”

Of course, telling us to keep the names we’d picked secret was like asking a dog to stop barking. We figured out every single name. Maxine picked Peter and Barbara’s name was on my slip of paper. When we figured out who had my name, I almost fainted. It was Betsy! Betsy was poorer than the rest of us. My eager little heart sank. I knew I wouldn’t get anything from her.

Maxine and I were walking home that afternoon after choir practice. “What am I goanna do, Maxine, when my name is called? Stand up there looking stupid while everyone is watching me?” Maxine tried her best to make me feel better.

When we reached Maxine’s house, her mother called to us to see what Maxine’s aunt had sent her. A pair of red gloves was out on the table. “Oh,” Maxine cried with delight. “Look at the white snow angels on each of them!” She pulled off her worn brown gloves and slipped her hands into the new ones. “I have never seen anything so beautiful in my whole life,” I sighed. Well, I was happy for Maxine, but the sight of the gloves made me feel even sorrier for myself.

Finally the day for the gift exchange arrived. One name was called and then another. Kids jumped up, laughing happily and calling out to friends as they received their gifts. “Betsy,” Mr Robert called. I saw Betsy stand up hesitantly. Then Maxine stood up!

I caught Maxine’s arm. “You have Peter,” I reminded her. “I traded him,” she whispered as she walked over and handed her gift to Betsy. Betsy carefully unfolded her gift. My eyes popped out, and I think I even said, “Oh no!” out loud.

Tim’s daughters, Hope and Hannah, have smartness, great humor, athletic abilities and beauty. His home is full of medals and many other awards his daughters have won over the years.

But the one thing they have never had in abundance (大量) is money. Having a single parent with a low-paid job, they never have pocket money. They wear hand-me-downs store clothing. But they never complain and never cry out for something Tim can’t afford.

Tim has many wonderful memories of his daughters. However, there is one that stands out.

When Hope was 10 years old and Hannah was 8 years old, they were looking for a gift to give Tim for Christmas. “Dad often gave us gifts. Now I think we should also give one to him,” Hope suggested. Hannah said it was a good idea. And they wondered what gift they should give their dad. After thinking for long, they thought of the National Geographic magazines. Their dad always loved the magazine. But because money was especially tight (紧的) that year, Tim had not been able to subscribe (订阅) to it. “The magazines sold in the bookstore aren’t that cheap. Well, at least, we can buy one and give it to Dad as a Christmas gift,” Hope said.

Not having any money of their own, Hope and Hannah then wondered how to solve the problem. Finally, they decided to find part-time jobs in the small neighborhood to make money. First, they needed to be permitted (允许) by their dad.

When they shared their decision one night, Tim thought they wanted to buy some toys, candy or something else for themselves. Since he couldn’t give them pocket money and thought part-time jobs could be helpful to a kid, he agreed. But he didn’t want them to be too tired, so he reminded them, “When you find you dislike the jobs, you can just give up.” Hope and Hannah smiled and nodded, and Tim thought they surely wouldn’t stick to their part-time jobs for long.

Paragraph 1:

The next morning, Hope and Hannah walked around the neighborhood to look for possible part-time jobs.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Tom was one of the rudest boys in the village where he lived. If a person’s clothes were dirty or torn, he would throw stones at him, and annoy him in every way.

One afternoon after school, a stranger with a broad-brimmed hat passed through the village. His dress was old but clean. No sooner had Tom seen the stranger than he winked (使眼色) to his playmates, and said, “Now for some fun!” He then silently went toward the stranger from behind, and knocking off his hat, ran away.

The man turned and saw him, but Tom ran away quickly. The stranger put on his hat and went on his way. Again did Tom approach; but this time, the man caught him by the arm and held him fast. However, he just looked at Tom a moment, and then pushed him away. Instantly the naughty boy found himself free again, he began to throw dirt and stones at the stranger. But he was much frightened when the man’s eye was hit and badly hurt. All the boys now ran back to their home.

As Tom drew near the house, his sister Caroline met him, holding up a beautiful gold chain and some new books for him to see. She told Tom excitedly that their uncle, who had been away several years, had come home; that he had brought beautiful presents for them; that he had been at the hotel nearby, and walked on foot now to surprise his brother, their father.

She said that while he was coming through the village, some bad boys threw stones at him, and hurt his eye badly, which had been treated by their mom. “But what makes you so anxious?” asked Caroline. The guilty boy rushed upstairs into his room without a word. Soon after, he heard his father calling him to come down. Shaking from head to foot, he obeyed.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语练写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

A little bird landed on the tree branch outside Lisa’s bedroom window. It sang energetically as the first pale yellow rays of sunshine appeared.

“Oh, my god, what is that noise?” Lisa complained to herself, pulling her bed sheets over her head to ignore the sound. It was no use, and she knew it. The loud sound showed the coming of the day. Lisa’s mom knocked twice on her door, and then came in with a smile. “Time to get up, Sleepyhead,” She whispered. “The early bird catches the worm, you know.”

“Ugh,” mumbled (含含糊糊地说) Lisa into her pillow. “What does that even mean?”

“It’s just an expression, Honey”, her mom replied. She gave Lisa a kiss on the cheek and urged her to get out of bed. Lisa rolled over and slept for a few more minutes.

With her mom’s repeated urging, Lisa had no choice but to get herself dressed. She went unwillingly downstairs for breakfast, ate slowly, and missed her bus. When she finally got to school, she failed to get a place in the Chess Club. She also missed the first part of math class, so she didn’t understand the lesson and had to get extra help at lunchtime. Her teacher gave her extra homework to make sure she knew it. As a result, she missed her favourite library time. This day was no fun.

The next morning, Lisa was woken up by the same loud noisy song. Instead of ignoring it, today Lisa walked over to the window and opened the curtains. “Well, hello there, little fellow,” she said when she saw the pretty bird outside, still singing happily. As she watched, the bird stuck its beak (喙) into the wet ground, and pulled out a wiggling (不停摇摆) worm for breakfast.

“Today I am going to be the early bird,” thought Lisa.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

Catherine was a mother of three and after her husband died three years ago, she had to step out and earn money to make ends meet.

In the beginning, she worked as a sales clerk at a store. But as her children grew older, she knew she must find a new job which could pay a higher salary (薪水). One day, Catherine was walking home after her shift (轮班) at the store when she spotted a construction site. Realizing that the money she would make by working there was more than her current salary, she thought she might be able to work there. She then approached the manager. After learning about her circumstances, the manager hired her on the spot. Then she left her job at the store and worked full-time at the construction site.

However, Catherine kept her new job a secret from her children. She thought they would feel embarrassed after learning their mother worked at a construction site. Every morning, Catherine would wake up and make breakfast for her children before dropping them at school. Then, she would go to the construction site and work until her shift ended. She would pick up heavy bricks on her shoulder to transport them from one part of the site to the other. One weekend, Catherine’s son, Peter, told her about an upcoming contest in school that required mothers to participate. In the competition, students would wear blindfolds (眼罩) and have to recognize their mothers without looking at them. “That sounds like such a cool event, Peter!” Catherine said. “I won’t go there with you, Mom,” Peter replied. When asked why, Peter said that he would have to touch Catherine’s hands to recognize her. “Everyone would look at them, but your hands are so ugly. They’re so hard and rough,” he added. Catherine felt terrible after hearing her son’s excuse for not participating in the competition, but couldn’t say anything in her defense. She had to stay quiet and keep working at the construction site to make ends meet.

Paragraph 1: A few weeks later, when Peter was returning home earlier one day, something unexpected caught his attention.

Out of curiosity, Harrison slowly untied the balloon and saw a piece of paper in it. It was a letter, but it was a little hard to read. He picked up the letter and put it in the sunlightfalling from the woods and read it aloud:

If you have found this letter, it means my balloon finally reaches the destination. I used the balloon to see how far my letter would travel. I want this balloon to fly to a teenager like me and I hope to be friends with you. I launched it from Wisconsin Academy on May 1. Please write back to me and tell me where and when you found it. Besides, I’m happy to know something about you.
