1 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Dad and Madison were walking through the party store, gathering decorations for Madison’s upcoming birthday party.

“But I don’t want to invite Lucy Gilbert! I don’t like her!”

“Madison, you are being unreasonable. If every girl in your class is invited to a party but you, you’ll feel left out. It would be a big mistake to not invite Lucy to the party. ”

“She never even talks to me! ”

Dad sighed and moved down the aisle. “Lucy is a new girl in class. She just moved here a little over a month ago. Think about how that must feel. She doesn’t know one single person in the school. She left all of her old friends behind and now she has to try to make new friends. Your party will be a great chance for her to get to know everyone. ”

“No, it won’t. She will probably sit in the corner and not talk to anyone. Every day at lunch she sits all by herself. She wants to eat alone!" Madison shrugged and rolled her eyes.

“Madison, I’m done discussing this. You will invite every girl in your class, including Lucy Gilbert!"

On Saturday morning, the family blew up balloons and decorated the house cheerfully. Madison was dressed beautifully for the day, wearing her new blue dress. It was not typical of her to dress herself like this. She usually wore sports clothes because she loved to be outside riding her horse Star with a lead rope(缰绳).

Madison greeted her friends at the doorstep, picturing various presents her friends would bring her. In the meanwhile, she was wondering whether Lucy would ruin the party if she came. Anyhow, all the girls she invited came finally, including Lucy.

The girls had a fantastic time by singing and dancing while Lucy sat in the corner silently alone. Later, all the girls gathered around the table as Madison opened her presents. Opening them one by one, Madison thanked her friends, with a bright smile on her face.

2 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

My family moved in a small house in Brighton, Colorado on my seventh birthday. My first memory is our neighbor Bill, an old man, handing me strawberries from his garden through a hole in the chain-link fence. “We need to make the hole bigger,” he said jokingly. Later I knew that he lived alone.

Bill spent much time working in the garden, and I was always talking lo him from our yard. I was a chatterbox. I think what drew me to Bill is that he never got tired of listening to me. I also think Bill saw a lot of himself in me — we were both lonely and anxious — and that may be why he always took the time to listen to me. It was a wonderful connection.

There weren’t any kids of my age in the neighborhood, and my parents were very busy, so I mostly played in the yard with my dog. I had a lot of imaginary friends — a whole family, actually, with a wife, children, a best friend…no joke. Weird kid.

One day, my parents asked Bill whether he’d watch me while they were away on business. This worked for everyone, so it became a somewhat monthly occurrence. Bill had a spare room in his house, which became “my” room.

Bill promised to teach me to drive the lawn tractor someday and I was always looking forward to it. In winter, Bill would attach a snowplow to the front of the lawn tractor. I seriously told him that I would invent a better snowplow when I grew up. “Sure you will. You’ll get a patent certificate. It takes a certificate to prove an important thing,” Bill said with a smile.

One snowy morning, an idea suddenly hit me. My parents were watching TV when I spit it out, “What if I adopted Bill as my grandpa?” My parents said I could go over and ask him.

It was an ordinary school day. I was in the fifth grade. Children like me who didn’t live close enough to go home for lunch brought their paper wrapped meals and gathered under the shade of a tree.

Such lunches usually consisted of a sandwich, hard-boiled egg, cookie and a piece of fruit. If a schoolmate’s sandwich or cookie appeared to be more appetizing than your own, you tried to negotiate a trade. I always tried to trade something I didn’t want anyway--a mashed-bean sandwich or an overripe banana. It never occurred to me to trade a slice of Mama’s Old Kentucky walnut cake for my schoolmate’s offering of a boring-looking sweet cookie, even though I could see longing in the exchanger’s eyes.

Sometimes Mama put two pieces of fruit in my lunch package, one to be eaten at morning recess if I was hungry. Quite often, though, I saved that piece of fruit as my bargaining piece for a sugary doughnut or fried apple pie.

Unashamedly, I always examined the looks and quality of my fruit to see which piece was better and then offered my classmate the poorer, less attractive piece. I felt no guilty of selfishness. It was just a good trading sense.

That autumn day after the lunch-bringers had eaten their food, got rid of the wrappings and walked to various parts of the playground, I wandered under the shade of a maple, watching butterflies flying lazily southward. I was still hungry and Mama had put no fruit in my lunch that day.

I saw my classmate Stella coming up a path.

One young academically excellent person went to apply for a managerial position in a big company. He passed the first interview and then the director did the last interview to make the last decision. The director discovered from the CV that the youth's academic achievements were excellent all the way, from the secondary school until the postgraduate research. Never did he have a year when he did not score.

The director asked, "Did you obtain any scholarships in school?" The youth answered, "None."

The director asked, "Was it your father who paid for your school fees?" The youth answered, "My father passed away when I was one year old, so it was my mother who paid for all my school fees."

The director asked, "What did your mother do?" The youth answered, "My mother worked as a clothes cleaner." The director requested the youth to show his hands. The youth showed a pair of hands that were smooth and perfect.

The director asked, "Have you ever helped your mother wash the clothes before?" The youth answered, "Never. My mother always wanted me to study and read more books. Furthermore, my mother can wash clothes faster than me."

The director said, "I have a request. When you go back today, go and clean your mother's hands, and then see me back here tomorrow morning."

My husband has been out of town for work this past week. When he travels, he typically is only gone for a day or two, but this time it was a few days longer. He was set to come home last night, but as he boarded the plane his fight was announced canceled and he had to return to the hotel to wait for the next fight. He learned very quickly the city was struggling due to high crime rate. He was not able to get a Uber or taxi at 4:30 a.m. to get to the airport for his flight due to workers being fearful of their lives. When I told my kids dad was not going to be home that night, they were both upset.

My husband was the head coach of my 5-year old’s baseball team. They had a game the next morning and my husband was trying so badly to make it home in time. The thought of possibly missing our son’s game rally made him mad. He wanted to be there because this was their thing and he didn’t want to let him or the other boys down.

A young man by the name of Asher, who worked at the hotel my husband stayed at, overheard my husband’s dilemma. He realized he was not able to get transportation to the airport. This young man offered to wake up and get my husband to the airport at 4:30 a.m. My husband was in shock -a complete stranger would offer to do such a big act of kindness. When he called me to tell me the possible ride, he was so hopeful. This young man honored his word and brought my husband to the airport safely.

I didn’t want to get my son’s hopes up, so I told him, “Dad is trying to get home for your game but I am not sure whether he will make it.” That morning, on the way to the baseball field, both my kids looked up in the sky the entire ride to the field and pointed at planes in the sky saying, “Maybe that’s dad’s plane.”

Two months ago, Ryder Killam, a 15-year-old French boy was registered in a new school in Hawaii. He just moved there with his parents. Although he missed his old friends very much, he managed to adapt to his new school life and soon made a lot of friends.

However, waiting for the school bus every morning often meant a real suffering because Ryder was born with spina bifida (脊柱裂)and he has to live in a wheelchair. Hawaii is one of the rainiest places in the world. This is not an issue for other students, but for him this was a different story. He often got wet all over before the school bus arrived during the rainy days. In that case, he could only have classes with wet clothes on or called his parents to send dry clothes to school and finding a place to get changed was also a big challenge for this disabled boy.

To keep Ryder protected from the bad weather while waiting for the bus every morning, the students in Ryder's school decided to take action. They first uploaded a post on Facebook asking for an unused bus shelter but got no reply.

Not being able to find one, the students from the construction class decided to take on the challenge of building a customized bus shelter for him and quickly put their hands to work.

As part of the high school's Career and Technical Education program, the construction class teaches its students basic building skills. Its main goal is to provide students with tools and skills that will have real applications in future jobs and a meaningful impact on their community. They had already performed several building projects for the community. Two years ago, they managed to build dozens of shelters for stray cats in the local park. Soon enough, they came up with an idea of building a two-window shelter for Ryder.

A Precious Present

Wrinkles of confusion spread across Angela’s forehead as she unwrapped the gift from her best friend, Susan.

“I…I thought you could use it for something.” Susan’s stammered explanation did nothing to help us understand why a twelve-by-eighteen-inchold blue carpet was being presented as a birthday gift.

My heart went out to our daughter. Starting out at a new school during her freshmanyear had been a difficult adjustment. Until she met Susan, Angela had experienced little success making new friends.

The murmured “thanks” was barely heard as Angela tried hard not to allow her disappointment to show. She laid the piece of carpet on the kitchen counter, and the two girls headed outside to play with the family dogs.

The next morning, I carried a garbage bag outside. My heart sank as I lifted the lid of the garbage can and saw Susan’s carpet lying there. Hesitating only a moment, I picked it up. After giving it a light brushing, I brought it into the house and put it away in the hall closet.

“Susan invited us to go over to her house after school tomorrow and she’d like us to meet her foster mom(养母).” Several days later Angela announced as, she arrived home. Although her voice carried a so-what attitude, I sensed she was pleased by the invitation.

The following day we drove to the destination along the winding country road.

Walking along the Erie Canal, I saw two women coming towards me. I thought they must be mother and daughter. The daughter reached into her pocket and handed her mom a snack. They both laughed.

I started to think of my mother. She got dementia (痴呆)in the early stage. How could I leave her to take care of herself? I was a wife and a mother who worked full-time. The answer was simple: I couldn't.I knew I had to act to keep her safe just like she protected me when she took my tiny hand and walked me to the kindergarten.

I came up with the idea of seeking a college student for help. Living close to a college, I contacted someone in Student Services. I needed a responsible student to live with my mom free of charge. Luckily, the college representative found one for me and got us in contact.

We met at a local store. Walking in, I saw her before she saw me. On the table sat the College' Admissions Handbook. “Could she be as nervous as I am?” I asked myself. With every step I took forward,I felt another pushing me back.

“Hi, I'm Hannah,” I said, reaching out my hand.

“Amanda,” she said with a smile.

We both felt a bit awkward, but I still asked, “Tell me something about yourself.” “I'm from Kenya. I hope to go to college to be a nurse, but I can't afford the dorm,” she said, tears in her eyes.

I took a deep breath and said slowly,“My mom has dementia. I need someone to be my eyes and ears. That person would get a free room and free access to the Internet, living with my mother.”

More tears from Amanda. Then she said, “I know you don't know me, but I'm very responsible.I would never do any harm to your mother, and I want so badly to be a nurse.” We talked a lot and finally I believed her and gave her my mother’s address.

Yoghurt

It was a rough week. The price of oil skyrocketed as the temperature dropped sharply in Maine. We were looking at a high of eight degrees that week, and I had missed three days of work so my paycheck was going to be lower than normal. I was stressed, to say the least. I shopped strategically, looking for every possible way to cut pennies so I could buy groceries and keep the house warm.

My eight-year-old son didn't understand when I told him we were struggling that week. He wanted a special kind of yoghurt, but I didn't have the extra three dollars to buy it for him. It was the kind of yoghurt with a cartoon kid riding a skateboard on the front of the box, and a mere two spoonfuls in each cup. It was the kind of product that wastes a parent's money and makes me hate advertising.

I felt guilty as a parent when those big eyes looked at me with confusion, as if to say, “It's just yoghurt. What's the big deal?” So I found a way. I put something back as single mothers often do. He got his yoghurt.

On the way driving back from the grocery store, I noticed a homeless man holding a sign by the side of the road. My heart hurt, and I tried not to look at him. I watched people stay away from him on the street and walk by without even meeting his eyes. My son didn't seem to care much, either. I looked at the man closely then — bare hands grasping a piece of cardboard, snot frozen to his face, a worn-out jacket. And there I was struggling because I had to buy oil and groceries. But I decided to help. I pulled over to the man and handed him a five-dollar bill.

Paragraph 1:

Seeing this, my son became confused and surprised.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:

On that day, my son performed an act that most adults wouldn’t have done.

When Dr. Henderson was assigning (指定) project mates for his psychology class, I secretly hoped he would pair me with my best friend or at least a classmate I could have some fun with. Above all, I hoped he wouldn’t assign me to work with the fiercely competitive, extremely serious fellow who always wore dark clothes and apparently had a personality to match. As fate (命运) would have it, Dr. Henderson very deliberately matched everyone in class and announced that I would be working with the one person in class I wanted to avoid.

I went up to my new teammate and introduced myself He looked at me as though I weren’t there. I felt he treated me as though I would hold him back and probably make him fail to get an A in the course. He wasn’t mean or rude; he just gave me the impression that he could do whatever project we dreamed up better if he did it alone.

Needless to say, I didn’t look forward to an entire term of being brushed off, but I tried to make the best of it and didn’t say anything for fear that I would make things worse.

The project required each team to develop a hypothesis (假说), set up an experiment to test the hypothesis, do the statistical analysis (数据分析) and present the findings. Whatever grade the team received would be shared by both students.

When my teammate and I met to discuss our project, I was uneasy. Here was this challenging student who had a reputation for concentration and good grades — the exact opposite of me. I was completely at a disadvantage. I actually wanted to drop the class at one point, but stopped short because I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of my chickening out and giving up halfway. I decided to stick to it no matter what.

After long discussions we somehow agreed to do a study on the mental well-being (健康) of teenagers. I wasn’t sure what it meant exactly, but at least we had a topic.
