Times were had in the United States during the 1930s. My family could hardly make a living on our farm. Even so, I was determined to help my parents celebrate their anniversary in a special way.
Three days before their anniversary, Mother took out her old dresses. They were wrinkled. Sighing, Mother said “Monte clothes don’t change that much, but my dresses are just not in style.” I didn’t want Mother to give un the anniversary celebration. Daddy would be disappointed. Also, I knew now what I was going to do for them and they would have to be away for me to do it. I persuaded Mother to change her dress, and by Friday night, she had finished the dress and pressed it.
On Saturday, Daddy went to borrow Mr. Smith’s pickup truck, and Mother went to get dressed. By that time I could hardly wait for them to leave so I could start making the cake! Keeping my plan secret had been hard. but I’d decided not to tell my younger brothers, Bill and David, until Mother and Daddy were gone. I was afraid they would get excited and let it slip out.
Bill, David and I went out to wave good-bye until the truck was far down the road. We started back to the house. “I have a wonderful surprise,” I told them. “While Mother and Daddy are out, we are going to make a cake for them. An anniversary cake.”
Bill looked at me skeptically.
“A fancy three-layer cake and we’re going to decorate it.”
“We’ve never made a cake before,” Bill said. “We’re probably going to make a mess and Mother will be upset.”
I told them I was the oldest and I was in charge. I got the milk and four eggs and the sugar. The hardest part would be breaking the eggs on the edge of the bowl. I sifted(筛)the flour and baking powder together first. And salt. I particularly remembered that because it seemed strange to put salt in a cake. I put all ingredients together and mixed them. It looked creamy and delicious.
