2 . My neighbour Orlando is a paramedic (护理人员). He and his wife are some of the nicest people I have ever met. A few years back we started this sort of “favor war”, where one of us would do something for the other, such as shoveling (铲) his driveway or helping him build a shed, and next time the other would try to top it with another favor.

Yesterday morning there was maybe 2 or 3 feet of snow on the ground and I remembered he shoveled my driveway for me last snowfall. So I took out my shovel and took care of both our sidewalks and driveways because it was my turn to do a favor back. It took a while but I finished and got into my car for work. What I did not realize was that Orlando had to work that day too.

Fast forward to this morning I got a knock on my door. It was him. He immediately shook my hand and informed me that because I shoveled his driveway and sidewalk for him, he was able to get to work earlier. As soon as he started his shift, a call came through that a young boy was in a medical emergency. Luckily he and his partner were only about 2 minutes away, but the next closest ambulance was in 10 minutes. This kid didn’t have 10 minutes. He barely had 2 minutes. Because my neighbour got to work sooner, the young boy got to live his life.

This isn’t a brag (吹嘘). This is to inform others that even the smallest favors can have the biggest impacts. It wasn’t too much of trouble to shovel his driveway for him, but because I did, the young kid got to see his family again, go back to school again, talk to his friends again and live his life.

1. What can we know about the writer and Orlando?
A.They once had a conflict.B.They signed a favorable agreement.
C.They favor shoveling snow together.D.They are always ready to help each other.
2. Who saved the boy before it was too late?
A.The writer.B.The boy’s parents.
C.Orlando and his partner.D.Orlando and his wife.
3. Why did Orlando knock on the author’s door in the morning?
A.To tell him to clear up the snow.B.To tell him to do a favour back.
C.To express his thanks to him.D.To say he started his shift.
4. What does the writer intend to tell us?
A.Never ask for trouble.B.No favor is too small.
C.One cannot always be lucky.D.Don’t lose heart in an emergency.

文章大意:本文是记叙文。作者通过讲述自己的家庭与足球之间的故事,展示了足球背后所蕴含的文化意义。

3 . My family first moved to Colorado 22 years ago. Los Angeles was too expensive and it was difficult to find well-paying jobs and affordable housing. Colorado became our next dream place. Settling into a small town in the Front Range, my parents found hard jobs.

Growing up in this small town, I remember my parents working hard to get past the language barrier. My mom, especially, tried her best to ensure she knew all that she needed to know about like my parent-teacher meetings and extracurricular (课外的) activities. One of those extracurricular activities that I signed up for was football. At that age, football was cool and all, but I was more into playing Pokémon and other video games. Football didn’t draw me in.

Big football tournaments (联赛) would come around like the World Cup, the Copa América and the Gold Cup, and the Mexican National Team would play in these tournaments. I would sit there in our living room and unmindfully watch the games while my parents would go crazy with enthusiasm ( 热情). I would sit there and play my game. My dad would look over and tell me that I should be paying attention carefully to the game and that I should care more about whether Mexico would win the match than my video games.

Both of my parents’ workspaces were crowded (占满的) with other workers. My mom worked with people from all over Latin America. Everyone’s topic of choice at work would always turn to how their national football team was doing. It was a way to show pride in the countries where they had grown up.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述对Rick Anderson而言鲨鱼不但不可怕,甚至还成为了他在海中结交的好朋友。

4 . Rick Anderson says he isn’t scared of sharks and he is appealing to others to learn to love them.

“I try to convince people that looking at a shark eye to eye is totally different to sitting on a surfboard or a boat looking at every shadow that goes underneath thinking it’s a shark coming to get them,” he said. “Eye to eye they look at you, you look at them and you go your own way.”

“I find that once people see their first sharks, their whole attitude changes. They realize that they are not as scary as what they thought they were,” Mr Anderson said. He compares sharks to dogs, in the way they show their behavior and attitude towards humans. “You’re not going to go up to a dog that is arching (拱起) its back and making a low sound in the throat at you,” he said. “If a shark is arching and its fins (鳍) are down, it’s telling you to move on.” He admit he thought the shark was trying to attack him the first few times.

Mr Anderson is against the controversial policy introduced in Western Australia to kill a shark if it presents a threat to humans. He said many of the same things that occur in Western Australia are also happening in New South Wales.

Mr Anderson said that sharks come closer to shore because they are attracted to the smell of whale carcasses (尸体) which have broken down after being buried in the sand on many beaches.

Mr Anderson often sees grey nurse sharks, fur seals, leopard seals, penguins and fishes of a range of colours in the Pacific Ocean along Bellingen Shire. “Depending on the time of the year, you can get a good mixture of sea creatures moving through there,” he said. Tiger sharks are his favourite kind of sharks. He describes them as pig-headed but also graceful creatures.

1. What does Mr Anderson probably do?
A.A boatman.B.A diver.C.A surfer.D.A fisherman.
2. What does Mr Anderson indicate by comparing sharks to dogs?
A.Sharks have the same behavior as dogs.
B.Sharks are naturally friendly to human beings.
C.Sharks can be lovely creatures if properly trained.
D.Sharks can send messages through their behavior.
3. What mistake did Mr Anderson once make?
A.He never looked at sharks eye to eye.
B.He once saw sharks as a scary animal.
C.He misunderstood a shark’s arching its back.
D.He didn’t allow sharks to get close to shores.
4. What do we know about the Pacific Ocean along Bellingen Shire?
A.It’s Mr Anderson’s favorite place.
B.It’s a popular place for tourists.
C.It’s open in certain times of the year.
D.It’s where Mr Anderson trains sharks.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述帕里斯被一块饼干噎住了,她的女儿对她进行了急救。文章通过这个故事告诉人们急救的重要性。

9 . Paris Baker is a 30-year-old mother who has two daughters, Kallie, nine, and Harper, five.

One day, the three were playing at home. Harper was playing mom, feeding her mother, then her teddy bear and finally herself. Suddenly, Paris started choking on a piece of cookie. Soon, the cookie was at the back of her throat. The two girls started hitting her back at once. After about a minute of hitting her back, Kallie went to call an ambulance as she started to worry. As she did this the other girl carried on doing what she had been doing and thankfully the cookie finally came up.

Paris was diagnosed (诊断) with motor neurone disease (MND) in 2017, and was told she had five years to live. The condition will gradually paralyse (使……瘫痪) her, leaving her trapped inside her body.

Due to her condition, she’s more likely to fall and has received serious injuries. She felt it was very important to teach her girls what to do in a dangerous situation she might be in. This included applying pressure to a bleeding wound, what to do if someone is choking and how to call emergency services.

The girls know that if their dad isn’t home and an emergency happens there are three steps. Step one is to ring 999, ask for an ambulance and give their address. Step two is to put their dogs in the garden, and step three is to open the front door for the emergency services.

After the accident, Paris was so grateful that she had taught her daughters what to do in such a situation. But accidents like that can happen to anyone. So if your kid hasn’t learned first aid skills yet, it’s time to do that now.

1. How did the two girls react as their mother choked?
A.They called an ambulance at once.
B.They took action as soon as possible.
C.They were too frightened to do anything.
D.They tried to carry their mother somewhere else.
2. Why did Paris teach her two girls first aid skills?
A.She wanted them to help others.
B.She knew she’d need their help.
C.She planned to make them doctors.
D.She was afraid of losing them in accidents.
3. What is the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A.To introduce useful first aid skills.
B.To explain kids’ role in stopping accidents.
C.To encourage the learning of first aid skills.
D.To tell readers what to do in an emergency.
4. What would be the best title for the text?
A.A game puts a mother’s life at great risk
B.A mother teaches her daughters a life lesson
C.Girls learn first aid skills from their mother
D.Girls save their mother’s life using first aid skills
