1 . Gordon Hartman had just got out of the swimming pool on a family holiday, when his12-year-old daughter Morgan went up to some children playing in the water. She tried to play with them but they quickly left the pool. Hartman thought, they didn’t know how to interact with someone with a disability—Morgan has a condition.
The incident played on Hartman’s mind. He asked other parents where he could take his daughter - somewhere she would feel comfortable, and others would feel comfortable interacting with her. He realised such a place didn’t exist.
So be decided to build a theme park where people with and without special needs could play. The park, called Morgan’s Wonderland, opened in 2010 in San Antonio, Texas. Attractions include an adventure playground and a carousel(旋转木马)with specially designed chariots for wheelchairs that go up and down alongside the animals.
However, it was three years before Morgan would go on the carousel. “When we opened she was too frightened to go on it. She didn’t understand why it was going around,” Hartman says.
“First she would stand near it, then she’d get on an animal but we wouldn’t start it. It was a slow process but now she loves going on it. And she knows the park is named after her.
Since it opened Morgan’s Wonderland has received over a million visitors. Entrance is free to any guest with a condition.
“I didn’t want cost to be a barrier for people with special needs” Hartman says,“We open every year knowing we’re going to lose over £750,000.”
Hartman says most visitors are not disabled-and that the park is having the effect hoped for.
“It helps people realise that though we are different in some ways, actually we are all the same”, he says, “I saw one girl in a wheelchair go up to another girl without special needs, and they began playing together. That’s cool.”

2 . Dad grew a lot of vegetables in the garden. Dates when everything was planted and the weather were all carefully recorded. Mum really wanted a holiday or a trip out for the day,but Dad would say, “It’s too warm today. My vegetables will need a drink every three hours.”
Then Dad discovered the local Loxton show—finally somewhere he could show off his gardening skills after his retirement. The first year he took part, he entered just four of his specimens (样品). Much to his surprise, he won three firsts and a second. We all thought this was great and eating free prize-winning vegetables was even better. Mum wasn’t so sure. “He gets up so early and spends hours getting them ready,” she complained (抱怨). We reminded Mum that it was a really cheap hobby, not to mention all the fresh vegetables that appeared out of the backyard. “You try freezing 15 kilos of beans,” she said. “I don’t care how expensive they are in the supermarket; I never want to see another bean again.”
But she loved the praise she got from her friends about how excellent her husband was and how lucky she was to have all these fresh vegetables. “I can’t let him know about that; he might get a big head,” she said with a smile. “So I’ll just complain a bit instead.”
Then over the following three years, Dad entered even more vegetables for the show and brought lots of first prizes home. But Mum got a little tired of the whole process of staying up half the night preparing his prize-winning vegetables. Dad finally said on his 75th birthday, “I have decided that this year I won’t enter the show. It’s not fair to everyone else who enters if I just keep winning year after year. Three years in a row is enough for me lo knew I grow the best vegetables.”

3 . Every day for a week, a strange, happy visitor would drop to play with Vanessa Prior’s pet dog Bobby. Prior thought Bobby had made a new dog friend. It seemed very friendly and got well along with Bobby. They would run after each other, play on the pool cover, gently wrestle (摔跤) or nap side by side.
At first she thought it was a wild dog. But when she posted a photo of the two playing on her Facebook, a pet rescue centre called her. The group told her the Atlanta Wolf Project had been trying to catch the wolf for months, but they failed. Prior gave them new hope.
Because of the wolfs friendship with her pet dog, it was likely to come back to her backyard. Researchers hoped Prior could help them. When they put some traps (陷阱) in the back of her yard, Prior got a very complicated (复杂的) feeling. She couldn’t describe what it was. The wolf would be in a safe place, but she would do something that harmed Bobby’s feelings.
Researchers told Prior that they would take the rare, black wolf to the Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary where it would live with another wolf. They didn’t think it a satisfying situation for a wild animal like a wolf to have a connection with humans’ life. They need to keep a natural awareness to humans and pets and keep to themselves.
Wolf experts added they would look into the genetics of the animal to try to learn why it liked to get close to people and tried to play with their pets. Some experts believe it could have a history with well-meaning humans. Prior had not expected that she and Bobby should meet such a special and lovely wolf. They just hoped the dear friend all the best.

On Christmas morning, we were excited for Almie to open the little heart-shaped package with the beautiful red and white clay bike and the note. She asked, “Does this mean that I can trade this bike that Daddy made me for a real one?” I said, “Yes.” Almie had tears in her eyes when she
5 . The chasm(鸿沟)separating Garang Piol from his dream of attending Cape Town University, the top university of Africa, in 2018 was wide. The former soldier from the Republic of South Sudan needed money to pay tuition.
In the years after the war’s ending in 2005, he had worked as an electrician in a school where he found a chance at education. Later, he worked for Atlanta’s Carter Centre in South Sudan, helping root out Guinea worm disease. His salary paid for his living expenses and for his education at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa in Kenya, where he earned a degree in sustainable development.
David Stobbelaar was in charge of the Carter Centre in South Sudan in 2008 when Garang was assigned to his team. Stobbelaar says Garang impressed Carter Centre staff with his intelligence, organization and communication abilities. The two became good friends over years and Garang told Stobbelaar his experience of being a soldier.
When Stobbelaar was talking in 2015 to Dickstein Hughes, a friend who is a teacher, she was leading her 10th grade English class through a book, A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Soldier. “I was talking to David about some of my concerns and bringing my students closer to the humanity of the memoir, and he suggested that he could connect me with a former soldier,” she said.
Garang soon was answering questions via Internet from the students. His talk was so impactful that Dickstein Hughes continued contacting him for the next three years, became Garang’s friend and came to know of his hopes of coming to Cape Town University for more schooling. Recommended by Dickstein Hughes, Garang was accepted at Cape Town, but the money became the crux. Thus Dickstein Hughes and her class started a GoFundMe account, went door to door and held fundraisers. “Life has challenged him time and time again, and Garang has proved himself time and time again.” Dickstein Hughes said.
Now Garang is one year into earning master’s degrees at Cape Town in international development and public health. He is anxious to return home and recreate the process that changed him. “I hope to change the life of others—to help them know they have a future,” Garang said.

Money were tight, so I was excited when a friend mentioned an online company that was trying to hire writers. On checking the requirements for the post, I knew this was the job for me.
Part of the application process involved writing a test article. I thought over the topic, spent several hours doing research, and produced my best possible effort.
One of the requirements involved the use of software that was new to me. The new software saved automatically as I worked, so that seemed perfect. That saved me from needing to hit “save” even now and then.
After completing the article, I checked it several dozen times. It had to be as near perfection as possible. When I could no longer improve it any more, I told the company that the post was ready for them to read and sent them a link.
A few days passed before the company contacted me. They had refused me. I couldn’t understand why. It must have been my article as, until that point, they seemed happy with everything else. They invited me to try again in ninety days, but there seemed little point in doing that. I had no idea what they didn’t like about my article.
Disappointed, I thanked them politely and wondered what else I could do to improve my income.
Next day, I received another e-mail from the company. They wanted me to post my article again. That seemed strange. What was the point of posting an article they’d already refused? Following the advice of my friend, I opened my post once more to see if there were any overlooked problems.
I immediately noticed that an editor for the company had edited the article. She seemed to love the piece until she came to the last paragraph. It had too many typing errors.
Near the end, the text turned into three lines of “n”. Here and there, another letter appeared, and then the “n” continued. Over three lines. The word was hidden among dozens of “n”.
I was shocked. How could that have happened? Something must have landed on the keyboard. But how had I not noticed it?

On one stormy afternoon last year, I was running home from school with my umbrella when I heard a bird start to sing. Out of curiosity, I went to have a look. Then I saw a brightly colorful bird nesting in a big tree. But the nest suddenly fell off.
With mercy and love, I decided to see if the bird had a chance to survive. Just as I went closer, I noticed a little head sticking out of the nest. I found that it had a wet broken wing, so it couldn’t fly. It looked so weak as if it were dying. So I placed it gently in my hand and covered it with my umbrella.
I carefully took it home and thought down the road how to explain this to my parents. What if they would not want it and throw it away? I could not take that chance, so I went out and put it in the back garden and gave it a warm blanket for the night.
In the following days, I went to school as usual, but somehow, I fell in love with biology class, especially when the teacher explained something about birds. I learned to feed the bird, and I hurried to care for it when the school was over. It was slowly recovering and growing. Holiday came at last. I couldn’t help telling my good friends about it. Then we secretly went to the back garden to look at my lovely bird. However, we were amazed to find that it had been missing.
Just as I thought where it had gone, a great surprise came all of a sudden. I found it staring at my cat in the distance. Catching sight of my appearance, it turned and came towards me. So I went to get it some water and birdseed. It was then that I found it grew into a big bird like a phoenix(凤凰) in the fairy tale. My friends all praised it, “What a beautiful bird it is!” Hearing their words, I felt truly proud. Fortunately, my care was not in vain but paid off.
