2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was a shy 13-year-old boy that year, afraid to speak before people and poor at communicating with others. My parents were worried so they introduced a part-time job in a restaurant tome during the summer vacation, hoping it would make a difference to me. Although I hated it and didn’t believe it would bring any change to me, I had to accept it. The part-time job fell on Monday of each week.

On the first Monday, I simply dared not look at people in the restaurant. And when I was speaking with them, my face turned red and my voice was low. On my way back home, I felt so bad. But when I reached home, my bad feelings disappeared. I found my parents had brought home a pet cat, which I had expected to get for a long period of time. The cat was so lovely.

However, one Thursday, he secretly ran out and disappeared. We looked for him everywhere the whole day but found nothing. We lived in the city, close to a high-traffic road, and this cat didn’t have “street smarts”. I guessed he would probably die and wouldn’t be home again. And after three days of looking for the cat with no sign of him, I quite believed he wouldn’t be home again. My parents told me “A miracle (奇迹) may happen as long as you don’t give up.”   However, I quite doubted it.

On the morning of the following Monday, I left for work 45 minutes earlier and started walking to the bus stop a block away. While waiting for the bus there, I thought about the work and felt upset. It wouldn’t be helpful to me and it was tiring! How much I wanted to quit the job! And thinking of the cat, I felt even worse.

Since it was still early, I suddenly wanted to spare some time to look for the cat again though I had little hope. I told myself, “If I still fail to find him this time, I won’t look for him again.” Then, I decided to walk to the next bus stop to look for him around. Minutes later, suddenly, a dirty and weak cat sitting by a tree caught my eye.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

After knowing that she couldn’t bear a child, Helen was devastated. One day while she was driving home from the café, a dirty puppy in the road caught Helen’s attention. After consideration, Helen and her husband eventually decided to take him home. And they later named him Ollie.

Two years later, Ollie had grown into a large ball of fur. Ollie was Helen’s world, and she hated it whenever someone addressed him as her rescue dog. Helen never went out without Ollie. One day, they were hanging out together outside a supermarket, unprepared for what was coming their way.

“Hey boy, wait in the car. I’ll be back, alright?” Helen said as she patted Ollie on his head. She locked him in the car and headed to the supermarket because Ollie hated crowded places and never accompanied Helen to the stores.

Moments later, there was a sudden outburst of chaos. Helen was busy shopping and had no idea it was raining heavily outside. The whole area began to flood unexpectedly. People rushed to every open store they could find for shelter.

12-year-old boy Matt was looking for a place to run to safety when he spotted people running to the supermarket nearby. He had no time to think and ran after them.

Matt hurried upstairs with the rest. Suddenly, Helen noticed the situation and was alarmed. “What happened?” she asked a man and screamed at the top of her lungs when she learned of the flood. All she could think of was Ollie trapped in the car.

“OLLIE..., I left my dog in the car,” she cried, running toward the window. “My dog is trapped in the car. Somebody, please...”

Matt looked outside and saw the car Helen pointed to was in the flash flood. Helen was frightened to go out because she didn’t know how to swim. Matt understood Helen’s anxiety and ran to her pet’s rescue.

He grabbed an iron rod from the corner and raced downstairs. “Hey kid, where are you going? You will drown,” someone shouted. But Matt turned a deaf ear to him because he was determined to save Ollie. In the meanwhile, some people placed a call to the rescue center.

Mary Lee seemed to have everything. She was very beautiful with a wonderful figure and an attractive face. She was very rich. Her clothes were better than anyone else’s and she had more of them. Her books were always new and expensive as were her pens, school bags and bicycle. She was very clever too and without appearing to do very much work. She was always the first in all the examinations and always answered all the questions, while the rest of the class were still thinking.

With all this, or really because of all this, no one liked Mary Lee. She was too good, too clever and she was also very proud. No one was quite good enough to talk to her or to be seen with her or to be her friend. And so, with all her proud ways and riches and brains, she was lonely but she did not care because she was always the best in everything. She was like a princess in the class. She always thought that the other students kept their distance from her because she was too excellent. “Lions and tigers are always lonely, and only the weak get together,” she told herself.

As the end of term drew near, the pupils including Mary Lee began to think about the most important prize of all. This was the prize, offered by the principal, for the best essay to be written on one of two subjects: Happiness and Friendship. All the teachers and pupils paid close attention to the prize, for it was really a great honor. “I needn’t worry about that,” thought Mary Lee, as the others began to read and to think about the essay. “I shall easily win. After all, my compositions are always better than the other students’.”

It was bright and sunny on May 26, 1997. It was also a special day for me. Friends came over, along with their parents who were holding gifts of all sizes. Even though I wanted to open them right away, my parents would not let me. To pass the time my friends suggested we play hide-and-seek.Everyone agreed. I had great fun playing with them.

After what seemed like only a few minutes, we were called inside to continue the celebration. Everyone started singing “Happy Birthday” to me and I joined in. I blew out my candles and made a wish. Then we went on to eat the wonderful food, like the chocolate cake and jerk chicken, which my mom had made. We had a wonderful time eating and talking together. Finally, the time was here. I quickly walked to the pile of presents and eagerly opened them one by one. Among them were Spiderman action figures, some video games, and a remote controlled car with working light.

After I had opened all the presents, I realized that I received nothing from my parents. Feeling a little sad, I asked them why. They led my away to the backyard. I thought I was going to get an excuse about why they couldn’t get me a present, but I was wrong. Waiting for me in our backyard was a large yellow truck! I was so excited that I immediately drove it around my backyard until it got too dark. That truck made my 4th birthday one of the best forever.

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Charles Rose lived in the country with his father, who taught him to read and to write. Mr. Rose told his son that, when his morning lessons were over, he might amuse himself for one hour as he pleased.

There was a river near by. On its bank stood the hut of a poor fisherman, who lived by selling fish. His careful wife kept her wheel going early and late. They both worked very hard to keep themselves above want. But they were greatly troubled for fear that their only son should never learn to read and to write. They could not teach him themselves, and they were too poor to send him to school.

Charles called at the hut of this fisherman one day, to inquire about his dog, which was missing. He found the little boy, whose name was Joe, siting by the table, on which he was making marks with a piece of chalk. Charles asked him whether he was drawing pictures.

“No. I am trying to write,” said little Joe, “but I know only two words. Those I saw upon a sign, and I am trying to write them.”

“If I could only learn to read and write,” said he, “I should be the happiest boy in the world.”

“Then I will make you happy said Charles.” I am only a little boy, but I can teach you that.”

“My father gives me an hour every day for myself. Now, if you will try to learn, you shall soon know how to read and to write.”

Both Joe and his mother were ready to fall on their knees to thank Charles. They told him it was what they wished above all things.

So, on the next day when the hour came, Charles put his book in his pocket, and went to teach Joe. Joe learned very fast, and Charles son began to teach him how to write.

Some time after, a gentleman called on Mr. Rose, and said, “Charles did not always amuse himself. I often see him go to the house of the fisherman. I fear he goes out in their boat.”

Houses are very different. Some are huge and have gold swimming pools. Pop stars live in those. Some are in rows with a brick wall at one end and overlook a pie factory. Franklin Gates lives in one of those. Number Three, Stanley Street, to be exact.

He loved living on Stanley Street. Everyone was friendly. All his mates were there and the smells from the pie factory, Mmm, delicious! There was just one problem. Franklin’s mum and dad wanted to move. His mum was expecting twins and they needed another bedroom. “This house is too small, ” said his mum. Next day, there was a “For Sale” sign stuck by Franklin’s door.

Franklin and his best friend Josh stared at the words of doom. “What am I going to do, Josh?” said Franklin.

Josh frowned. “Has your house got problems? Number forty’s got problems and no one wants to buy it.” Franklin stared at number forty. It looked all right to him. “What kind of problems?” he asked.

“Oh, mice and damp and really horrible wallpaper.” Franklin sighed. His house was warm and friendly and it had just been painted, worse luck.

Mrs. Cox lived next door to Franklin in a big house that had once been the corner shop. Just then, she came out, followed by her dog Zack.

“I’m sorry you’re moving,” Mrs. Cox said. “So am I,” Franklin grumbled. Mrs. Cox patted Franklin on the arm. “Never mind. Your house might take months to sell.”

However, a few days later, Franklin came home from school to find a man in the kitchen. His name was Mr. Bragg and was interested in buying the house. He glared at Franklin and trod on his toes, without saying sorry. Franklin’s heart sank when Mr. Bragg said he wanted to come back for a second visit on Saturday morning.

At school, Franklin asked, “Josh. Does your elder sister still work in the fish shop?” Josh nodded. “Good. Listen, I’ve got a job for you.”

Franklin cupped his hand over Josh’s ear and began whispering his plan.

10 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I needed to do something in my community (社区) in order to complete the community service hours required to graduate from high school. Some of my friends had signed up to spend time at a soup kitchen, so I did, too. It seemed like a good thing to do.

I thought that we would just be passing out dinners to those in need, but I found out we would be doing everything from preparing to serving the dinner. We began preparing the food, from mixing salad dressing to separating frozen meat. Much still needed to be done before dinner was served, but already outside the building many homeless people were gathering. It wasn’t until a couple of hours later that we opened the doors and began serving dinner.

As the line of people came toward me, I got a little scared. I’d come face to face with the homeless: How should I act? How would they treat me? Would they hate me for having more than they did? While some of the people looked very friendly, some of them looked so dangerous. I didn’t have too much time to worry about it. I was assigned (分配) to serve the salad with the lady next to me. She smiled at me and said if I needed help, she’d be right there, which I found quite comforting.

I had never seen so many people wanting food. They were of all ages and nationalities. Most of them wore clothes that were torn and dirty. Some looked like they had tally given up on life, while others seemed to be making the best of the situation, smiling and joking. Some were better off than others, but they all needed a good meal and a warm place to eat. It saddened me to think of how many people there were who didn’t have a place to call home and the only food they got came from a soup kitchen.
