1 . A 37-year-old fast food courier(外卖小哥), Lei Haiwei, got the first prize in the third season of The Chinese Poetry Conference on CCTV on April 4th, 2018.
“My interest in ancient poems began as early as I was six years old,” Lei said after winning the poetry competition.
Lei Haiwei was born in a small village in Hunan Province. When he was young, his father taught him ancient poems by putting them on the kitchen wall for him to read.
“My father hoped I would grow up to be a man who keeps the mountains, rivers, lakes and seas in mind.” Lei said.
In 2001, Lei Haiwei graduated from a technical secondary school and found a job in Shanghai. There, he began to read books on ancient poems at bookstores or libraries in his free time because he didn’t have enough money to buy books. He also developed a habit of reciting(背诵)poems he liked and wrote them down after coming back home.
Lei Haiwei came to Hangzhou in 2008 and worked as a fast food courier. Every day, he had to take fast food to different people. On his busiest workdays, Lei Haiwei had to deliver more than 50 orders(订单)a day. Even so, his love for poems went on and he seized(抓住)any chance to recite poems.
As for his future plans, Lei Haiwei said he would go on reading and reciting more poems.

2 . The wind is cold and raindrops fall. Bill Porter pays little attention to the bad weather. He’s a door-to-door salesman. With heavy steps, he stops at the first house. He rings the bell. A young woman comes to the door. “Hello.” “No, thank you.” She shuts the door. Porter’s expression never changes. People might not buy now. Next time. Maybe.
He makes his way up and down the hills. His bag is heavy. His hand hurts. His brain was damaged when he was born, which caused a disorder to his nervous system that affected his speech, hands and walk.
He walks on. He knocks on a door. A man walks out from the back yard where he’s gardening. He often buys, but not today, he says, as he walks away. Then Porter is on his way. No sale. No sale. No sale.
Finally, a middle-aged woman invites Porter inside. They chat easily about what has recently happened in the neighborhood. After a few minutes, Porter takes off his hat and raincoat and sets them on a chair. Out come the glasses and the brochures.
“We have a new kind of pepper (甜椒).” “No.” “Hot spices (调味香料)?” “No.” “All natural, pure pasta toppings (意面浇料).” He looks at the customer. She’s teetering and just needs a push.
“Sure would make a nice gift.” He studies her face, searching for clues as to what she needs to hear. “Nothing man-made.” “Really? How much is a set?” she asks. “$22.99, and they go a long way.” “OK, I’ll give it a try.”
Porter removes his glasses and places everything in his bag. He pulls on his coat and hat and follows the woman to the front door. He turns to her and says, “And I thank you.”
He arrives home after 7 p. m. Today was not profitable. He tells himself not to worry. Four days left in the week. He eats at the kitchen table and listens to the radio. He hears the rain pound on the street. He must dress warmly tomorrow. Soon he’s sleepy with great care he climbs the stairs (楼梯) to his bedroom. In time, the lights go off. Morning will be here soon.

4 . My sister and I couldn’t be more different. I’m louder and taller. She’s quieter and shorter. When we were young, I sped through Michigan forests on my bike while she read Nancy Drew books. My sister, who is 14 months older than me, and I have always gotten along, but for years we weren’t especially friendly and spoke only when necessary.
Twelve years ago, our father had a stroke (中风). Soon our mother was seriously ill. I managed all the day-to-day caretaking; from afar, my sister offered suggestions which made me feel she was unsatisfied with me. Our mother died in 2015.
Last year I suddenly wanted to watch Chinese TV dramas (电视剧). That felt natural. When I was young, my mother and her friends would share videos of TV dramas sent from China. Perhaps these dramas were her only connection to her early years in China.
I started with one of the most popular dramas—“The Story of Yanxi Palace.” I was amazed at the beautiful clothes, detailed settings and excellent performances (表演). One afternoon, I decided to text my sister what I might have told my mother about the drama. At that point, my sister and I only texted once every few months, usually to discuss our father’s caretaking. Surprisingly, she began to watch along with me. Soon we were live texting as we watched.
Our interest grew until we were watching other dramas, like the hit “GO Ahead.” The more dramas we watched, the more conversations we had. Over the past year, my sister and I have watched so many Chinese dramas together that I’ve lost count.
2020 has been a long year of repeated losses for us all, but amid these losses, I’ve found a lost sister. I never could have imagined how Chinese dramas could help me get back to my Chinese roots (根), or how dramas would help me build a new relationship with my sister.

7 . Bournemouth in Dorset has always been my favourite seaside town. When I was growing up, Mum and Dad didn’t have much money, but they’d saved enough for a few days in Bournemouth. I was four years old at the time. I don’t actually remember much about the trip, apart from being devastated when we had to leave. Mum said I fell in love with the place and insisted on waving goodbye to the sea when it was time to go. So I grew up believing Bournemouth was a wonderful place.
Forty years on, my wife and I returned for a week’s break. I was nervous, wondering if I’d be able to bring back that delight I’d felt as a child. I needn’t have worried. We had a fantastic time. It helped that the British weather had decided to provide us with high temperatures and plenty of sun. But it was Bournemouth that kept me spellbound, making me feel like a child again.
Bournemouth and its neighbour, Boscombe, are always busy, alive with chatter, music and other lively sounds. But as we stepped into Boscombe Chine Gardens, all the noise faded away. A sense of peace spread through us as we meandered along the paths, delighting in the squirrels climbing up and down the trees and the bright colours of the pretty plants.
One morning, we made a short trip to Poole Quay and took the ferry to Brownsea Island. Owned by the National Trust, it’s a feast for the eyes, from its mock Tudor entrance, to the many peacocks walking around, to the magnificent views of the sun sparkling on the shining waters and boats bobbing up and down, seen from the island’s highest point.
Before we knew it, it was time to return home—but not before waving goodbye to the sea.

8 . My name is Destiny, working at a Psychological Counselling Center. In my teens, there was nothing special about me. My older sister, Antia, is beautiful. My younger brother, Tye, is a talent at the age 13. He completely skipped the sixth grade. How do I compete with that?
My mom and I were home alone one day. I went into the room where she was watching television and I blurted out (脱口而出), “Mom, is there anything special about me?”
She thought about it for a moment and then turned down TV. She took a deep breath, took my hand and exhaled (呼气).
“You have the ability to say just the right thing at just the right time.”
“Really? Is that it, words?” I tried to keep my voice steady (稳定的) but I could hear the anger even as I fought to control it.
“It’s more than words, Destiny,” my mom said. I know my mother meant well but I felt worse than ever. I burst into tears.
The next day is when my whole life changed. I went to school earlier than before and noticed Darwin sitting across the room which was strange because no one ever noticed Darwin. Suddenly, Darwin stood up and threw away all his books, shouting loudly. I could hear screaming and crying but the sounds seemed distant as I focused my full attention on Darwin six feet in front of me. I felt the words swell up in me. “Darwin,” I heard myself say with a calm, steady voice. “I have family and friends with so much talent and potential and I have none. There is nothing special about me.” From the corner of my eye, I could see others staring at me in silence. I continued talking. “You are so smart. You can answer questions that the teacher hasn’t even asked yet. Do you know that everyone in this class is envious (嫉妒的) of you?” Hearing my words, he calmed down and gave me a big hug.
Then the teacher came. Learning about what happened, the teacher smiled, “That was a great job you did, young lady. Superman could not have done a better job than you did here today.” I couldn’t believe that she compared me to Super man. I work at Psychological Counselling Center now. There is a cork board over my desk filed with thank-you cards and letters from people who say they owe their lives, careers, or their families to my words. But tome, they are more than words. In the following months, he came to the shelter several times, setting up tents and delivering (派送) supplies (物资) to people.
