2 . It was graduation season, and for Khalia Carter, walking on the stage meant more than just receiving a diploma (学位证书). The high school senior missed part of her final year after a terrible car accident. But she was determined to make it to the graduation—even if it was difficult for her to walk across the stage.
On April 18, Carter was hit by a careless driver. The accident left her with painful brain injuries (损伤). With about a month left in school, doctors determined she would not be able to return to her classes. Instead, she needed physical treatment every day to regain motor skills, like learning to walk again.
Carter’s mother Shawnda Cook recorded every step of her recovery process. “I sometimes feel sad and upset,” Cook said. “But there are more amazing feelings, like ‘Wow, this girl has the strength to move on, and we need to look up to her.’”
Carter missed most of her senior year celebrations but said graduation would not be one she missed. And that was just what she did on May 21, when she walked across the stage on her own to receive her diploma. “It’s almost impossible to get it done until it’s done,” Carter said, “So, if you put your mind into it and work for it, you will do it.”

5 . It was raining. I went into a cate and asked for a coffee. While waiting for my drink, I saw many people playing computer games,
I stood up and walked between the tables. When I came to the biggest computer, I saw a thin, small man sitting in front of it. “I am Steve,” he finally answered after I asked him a couple of times what his name was. “I can’t talk with you. I’m busy,” he said. He was chatting online and, at the same time playing a computer game—a war game. I was surprised.
Why didn’t Steve want to talk with me? I tried again to speak to that computer geek (电脑迷), but not a word came out of his mouth. I touched his shoulder, but no reaction. I was unhappy. I put my hand in front of the monitor and he shouted, “Leave me alone.” I took a few steps back, wondering if all those people were having a nice conversation with their machines, not with people, especially Steve. I wouldn’t want to imagine the future of human beings if they preferred sharing their lives with machines instead of with people. I was worried and sank in my thoughts. I didn’t even realize that the coffee was bad, just as Steve didn’t notice there was a person next to him.

6 . A few years ago, I realized that I had a fear of heights. Sometimes I would feel uncomfortable if I looked down from somewhere high and the higher I got, the worse I felt. However, there were some things that made me nervous when I looked up at them — such as drop towers (急速下降塔).
About a month ago, my family and I went on a trip to Marineland — an amusement park with a sea animal theme. One of Marineland’s attractions is a huge drop tower called the “Sky Screamer”. My dad wanted to ride it, and he wanted to take me with him. He kept encouraging me, and I finally gave in, because I was desired to face my fears.
Going up was terrible. I got stomachaches from just looking at the tower. When we reached the tower, we lined up and got seated on the ride. When it reached a few feet off the ground, it stopped for a moment, before sending us straight to the top at great speed. I squeezed my eyes shut and I held the handlebar (把手) as tightly as I could during the whole ride. A few seconds later my heart was in my mouth and I was screaming my lungs out. At the top, I opened my eyes and looked forward, not down.
I tried to prepare myself for the way down, but it didn’t really help. There I was, with my eyes squeezed (紧紧地) shut, holding the handlebar and again, screaming at the top of my voice. In fact, it was even worse than going up! But when I got to the bottom, I felt relieved. I thanked my dad for forcing me to go on the ride, and I was pleased I had overcome my fears.
So, was the “Sky Screamer” scary? Well, maybe just a little bit.

8 . April Fools’ Day is supposed to be a day to play jokes on others in hopes of getting a good laugh and making one feel like a fool. However, the April Fools’ Day of 2022 was quite different for my mom and me.
That day my friend Jimmy and I were playing a game. I had dropped down from a bar (横木) many times in the past without ever having a problem, but that day the simple act of dropping to the ground became a nightmare (噩梦). I broke my arm.
Jimmy’s dad heard my crying and rushed out to see what was going on. When he saw the problem, he quickly put me into his truck and went inside to telephone my mom and let her know he would take me to the hospital. As that day was April Fools’ Day, Mom was not buying it and really thought it was a big joke. Mom was finally convinced by Jimmy’s mom. When she saw me, she broke down in tears because she felt so bad-she simply believed that it was just a big trick.
I guess one could compare this to the story The Boy Who Cried Wolf. Since I had played bad tricks before, it was no wonder that my mom didn’t believe it. I as well as my mom was made to look like a fool that day. We both learned a valuable lesson.

A.She thought her son deserved it. | B.She would not like to pay the money. |
C.She had no preparation for the bad news. | D.She didn’t believe what Jimmy’s dad said. |
A.Because he was proud of his story. |

A.the writer was a dishonest person | B.the writer will lose interest in games |
C.the writer won’t play jokes as before | D.the writer’s mom didn’t care much about him |
9 . We moved into a beautiful two-story old house. The house was built in 1956. It was repaired in 2003.
At first, really small things began to happen. They didn’t make me believe that something was wrong, but as time went on, things started becoming stranger and stranger. Early something was missing, and later on it would be found somewhere else. I just thought I had forgotten where I put it, or perhaps my daughter was playing around with things. Then later on I would hear strange sounds when nobody was at home but me. Yet it was an old house, and sometimes old houses did make little noises, so again, I didn’t really mind.
Then things that I couldn’t explain started happening. It was last November and I was at home alone cleaning the house. When I was sweeping the kitchen floor, I felt a very cold wind blowing my hair. I thought the kitchen window must have been opened, but when I checked it, it was closed. The windows were new, and there was no way any cold air came in.
We all felt very strange and moved away from there in October, 2021. I was never really frightened. It was just strange, like something or someone was trying to get my attention or something.
