Another Way

The train ran smoothly on a spring afternoon. At one station, the doors opened, and came in a man. He wore laborer’s clothing, big, drunk and dirty. Screaming, he swung at an elderly couple. Terrified, the couple jumped up and quickly walked away. The laborer aimed a kick at the back of the old woman but missed. The passengers froze with fear.

I’ve been putting in a solid eight hours of martial arts (武术) training nearly every day for the past three years. “We study how to resolve conflict, not how to start it,” my teacher had said again and again. I listened to his words. In my heart, however, I wanted to save the innocent by destroying the guilty.

“This is it!” I said to myself as I got to my feet. Seeing me stand up, the drunk recognized a chance to focus his rage (怒火). His fists upraised, he gathered himself for a rush at me. A second before he could move, someone shouted “Hey!”

I remembered the strangely joyous quality of the voice. We both stared down at a little old man. “Come here and talk with me,” the old man said in an easy voice. He waved his hands lightly. The big man followed, as if on a string. He planted his feet in front of the old gentleman, “Why should I talk to you?” The old man continued, “What have you been drinking?” “Beer,” the laborer replied, “and it’s none of your business!”

“Oh, that’s wonderful,” the old man said with interest. “You see, I love beer, too. Every night, my wife and I take beer out into the garden, and we sit on an old wooden bench. We look to see how our persimmon (柿子) tree is doing. We worry about whether it will recover from those ice storms we had last winter. Our tree has done better than I expected, though, especially when you consider the poor quality of the soil.”

文章大意:本文一篇夹叙夹议文。文章讲述了作者对自己的公司管理能力信心满满,但现实中却频频受挫。在咨询师Natasha的帮助下,他找到了自己的问题,并承诺作出改变。

2 . When I started Social-Engineer, I just left a company that was amazing. It was like a family. The pain of leaving was real for me and like all family separation, it wasn’t 100% smooth. I was heartbroken to leave but wanted to take every lesson I learned to my new company. I was determined to also take all the good memories with me. Yes, there were mistakes from both sides of the fence but instead of focusing on those, I went away remembering all the great times, life lessons and growth I had gifted to me.

I figured I would grow my company by being a nice man and working hard, and never demanding more from my people than I was willing to give, believing this approach would earn respect and effort in return. I would say things to myself like, “Well, I did this, so they should do that.” Or “I am this way, so they should be that way.”

And to be honest, it felt real. It felt like it was an honest evaluation.

But... But... But...

I started to have people problems. I am a very strong, direct communicator and although in many ways that is a strength, it can be a weakness in other ways. I often hurt people’s feelings. Even though I was very self-aware of this, I still messed up. Now this is odd to admit out loud for a company that basically focuses on helping dozens of companies make huge changes.

I went to see a psychologist. Natasha actively listened to all I said and then every now and then presented a thought as a question or a mild statement. She wanted to challenge me to change, challenge me to expand my thoughts. I was in my session with Natasha and I was saying things like this:

“I gave this person tens of thousands of dollars in a raise in one year, they should be more appreciative.”

“I have a great salary, benefits and support package, this person should have been more thankful.”

Natasha stopped me and said, “Well, you just SHOULD all over yourself, didn’t you? Did you pay for devotion? Did you pay for honor? Did you pay for appreciation?”

The sad answer was NO.

“You want to see the change that you so desire — then be the change,” Natasha said. She then mentioned Bruce Lee, who said “Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle... Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”

I know what I should do. Will you join me?

The wind howled (呼啸) with the terrible storm at night. The stars were stuck to the black sheet of the sky. The next morning, when I woke up, the winter’s icy wind caused me to shake

My friends and I agreed to take up the skiing contest. I took a seat near the heater, warming my hand and trying to calm myself before the skiing contest. I was encouraging myself by shouting, “I can win this contest.” As soon as I reached the white mountain top, I began wearing my safety guards for the climb down. We rhythmically recited “Ready-set-go” and the race began. At every moment my speed started to increase.   Finally, winning was only one step away. As a wise man had once said, “With a determined heart, a mouse can also lift an elephant. So willpower and courage can help conquer (战胜) a hard task.” My hope helped me to conquer this challenging race. I was on top of the world by winning the skiing contest. Skiing has now become my hobby.

The next morning, it was snowing heavily. Watching this wonderful sight along with tasting the delicious hot chocolate, we friends were planning to go for an overnight climb to the top of the mountain. We came out of the hotel room and stepped into the deep snow which buried half our legs into the soft snowy ground. The best moment till now was looking up at the grand mountain. Also the view was clear. I was eager to start my climb. We climbed towards the top and all of a sudden I lost my balance and fell from the mountain. Fortunately I did not end up giving up my life but got a severe fracture (骨折) on my leg.

Be What’s Missing

Where was that cashier? Angry, I glanced at my watch. I barely had enough time to eat my hamburgers and then dash back to the hospital where I worked.

I looked around the nearly empty fast-food restaurant but the cashier was nowhere in sight. A woman whom I guessed to be about my age stood wiping the far end of the counter with a towel. When she thought I wasn’t looking, she looked at me with sad, dark eyes.

I waited, drumming my fingers on the counter. The woman pushed the gray hair from her lined forehead and continued wiping the counter.

I glanced again at my watch. I planned to write a letter about the lack of service in this place. But just as I mentally made up my letter, I had a memory of Rosie, a former coworker of mine. I could hear her sweet voice recommend me, “Be what’s missing.”

“What do you mean, ‘Be what’s missing’?” I had asked the first time I heard her use that phrase. “Whenever you find yourself in an unpleasant situation,” she explained, “just think about what is missing.” Rosie smiled at my blank stare. “It’s really simple when you think about it. If someone is mean, then kindness is missing. If someone is inconsiderate, then thoughtfulness is missing. If someone is hateful, then love is missing. If we will be what’s missing, then we’ll provide whatever the situation needs.”

And here I was in an unpleasant situation. How was I supposed to “be what’s missing”? What was missing was service. But then the woman who had wiped the counter walked slowly toward the cash register. With deliberately paced words, she asked, “May I help you?”

I was not satisfied with her service, and I was so angry that I almost lost my temper. But again I heard Rosie’s voice, “Be what’s missing.”

I took a deep breath. It was clear that I was in a hurry to be waited on — by someone who was, no doubt, overworked, underappreciated, and underpaid. With Rosie’s words ringing in my head, I gave the woman my order… and smiled. “How are you today?”

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。文章主要论述了联合国定为“国际宽容日”目的、宽容的定义以及宽容和原谅的关系。

5 . There is a song by the great Jamaican singer Bob Marley called So Much Trouble in The World. Marley understood that part of the reason why there are so many problems in the world is the lack of tolerance between people. The UN understands this too— that is why it made November 16th “International Day for Tolerance”.

But first, what is tolerance? According to French philosopher Voltaire, “Tolerance is the consequence of humanity. We are all formed of frailty (脆弱) and error; let us pardon each other’s fool— that is the first law of nature.”

Very often, people do not realize that they are intolerant. This is because intolerance has a lot to do with ignorance. For example, the UN’s campaign is in part about the treatment of females by males. But often, the behavior of men toward women is intolerant because men do not put themselves in the shoes of women.

It is worth thinking a little about the words “tolerance” and “intolerance”. Are they the best words to describe the evils of which we are speaking here? To agree to be “tolerant” of someone is not necessarily a very respectful thing. When someone is tolerated, it implies that there is something wrong with them.

Still, what Voltaire said stands: We humans are not perfect and this weakness is something that we all share. That is the reason we should be tolerant. It is a little like generosity. We can give things to another person, and we can also give our forgiveness.

1. What is the purpose of the UN “International Day for Tolerance”?
A.To celebrate the founding of the UN.
B.To solve the problem of global warming.
C.To change people’s opinion towards globalization.
D.To arouse the awareness of tolerance among people.
2. Why do men behave intolerantly towards women?
A.Because men do not realize the purpose of the UN.
B.Because men are physically stronger than women.
C.Because men are not willing to understand women.
D.Because men do not appreciate the shoes of women.
3. Why is it meaningless to use the words “tolerance” and “intolerance”?
A.Because they cannot be used in a respectful way.
B.Because they are hard to pronounce in English.
C.Because they cannot be translated into other languages.
D.Because they do not express the exact meaning people refer to.
4. In what sense is “tolerance” similar to “generosity”?
A.Humans tend to find faults in others.
B.Humans need to give something to others.
C.Humans are advised to treat others better.
D.Humans change their attitudes towards others.

Ariana Porter was very excited. Tomorrow will be a new day and a new beginning, well, kind of. Tomorrow Ariana will go to a boarding school! No little sister to share a room with, peace and quiet. She ate her favourite homemade curry for the last time that year. Then, she curled up in her clean bed and shut her eyes. Excited.

The next day, Ariana woke up, jumped into her best clothes and flew downstairs. After a quick breakfast, the whole family lined up and said their goodbyes. Ariana’s little sister tried to hug her, but she shrugged Liliana off. And off she went to boarding school. Happy.

However, when Ariana got there, everyone looked unwelcoming. A teacher showed her to her dorm. It was cold and dark! A few days later, Ariana got several letters. The rainbow one was from her little sister and another from her parents. Ariana couldn’t even be bothered to open them. She just threw them into the main hall’s fireplace when nobody was around.

Every day, Ariana tried to make friends. It was an allgirls school. Unfortunately, she had no luck. She tried to give girls gifts, she tried to be friendly, but they shrugged her off just like she did to her sister. Two months passed trying to find new friends, but without success. Ariana felt more and more lonely. Something was missing in her life. Something indescribable. Something, or maybe someone.

Week after week went by and then, one day, holding yet another batch of mail, Ariana’s heart trembled. She realized what she was painfully missing, her FAMILY. Whenever she was down, whenever she needed help or comfort, they were there for her. Always. This time she opened the little rainbow envelope and smiled. Reading it filled her heart with joy. Ariana couldn’t reply, for the school didn’t allow that, so she decided to hide the letters under her pillow. The pile grew larger and they were so important to her, for the letters gave her the greatest comfort when she was away from home.

Months passed eagerly waiting for the day when the school year ends. No more dorm life and unfriendly girls. Ariana skipped to math class excitedly, but couldn’t concentrate, she dreamed about going home.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Teenagers love to stay in close contact, but only when it’s through our phones and almost never in person. Without phones, our relationships are frail (脆弱的). We may have 600 followers on social media, but only a few who we can call true friends. We make friends quickly, but lose them just as fast. We don’t know the real meaning of human connections. I fell prey to this rule as well. But all changed when I began volunteering.

I’d signed up to help out at a children’s rehabilitation (康复) hospital. I was full of fear. I’d never interacted closely with anyone with a disability. Though I thought of myself as an acceptable, open-minded person, I was worried.

I wondered if children who may never speak, who may never be responsive, cannot make meaningful human connections. “How would we be able to understand each other if we could not speak?” I wondered. “Would the children feel lonely? Would I feel lonely?”

But on the first day, my worries disappeared. Walking into Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital was like walking into a room where all the noise and sound we experience day-to-day disappeared.

Many of the children were non-verbal. So you seldom heard a conversation. Things seemed to move in slow motion. My job was to provide one-on-one support during activities.

Before we began to work, we had a volunteer training session. We were told that to make sure we were being understood, we should look into the children’s eyes, and ask, “Are you seeing me?” This was to create a sense of mutual (互相的) understanding. We were also taught to use gestures, such as eye contact, smiling, nodding, and patting to communicate.

I was paired with a boy named Miles, who could neither speak nor hear. The first time I accompanied him, I never thought we would make such a meaningful connection only through eye contact and smiles. The two of us lay side by side in a room called Rest and Relaxation with classical music filling the air. Lights were strung up that changed color with a remote control. Miles stared at the colorful lights. Obviously, he got interested in the lights.

8 . Human brains are social organs — they’re neurobiologically (神经生物) wired for connection. But just as our students’ brains can be unfavorably affected by negative mentality and misfortunes, so can their parents’ brains, affecting relationships with teachers.

What feels hurtful from a parent could be a worn-out brain, one that is trying to survive and so is defending itself and paying close attention to experiences or relationships that may feel terrifying or unsafe.

There are times when we may feel harmed by a parent, and we too can fire off sharp words if we re feeling misunderstood and angry. We may also unintentionally increase a conflict while moving farther away from cooperation and solutions. A poorly regulated educator cannot help a poorly regulated parent.

I myself have been blamed for my son’s upsetting behaviors when he was struggling emotionally. Eleven years ago, when Andrew became a newcomer in high school, the anxiety and anger masking the fear he felt almost destroyed our family. We felt helpless and often hopeless.

In the middle of this scary time, I received an email from Andrew’s Spanish teacher.

Dear Dr. Desautels,

I wanted you to know that Andrew finished his project today and had a smile on his face. I just wanted to share that with you.

Please let me know how I may serve you in the days to come.

Mr: Pickett

This email changed everything for me as a mom and as an educator. It helped our family experience a bit of hope and inspiration. Andrew worked hard for Mr. Pickett that term and ended with an A. He failed most of his other classes, but because of the connection this teacher created with Andrew, he felt heard, seen, and appreciated.

One thing I’ve learned is that I must regulate my own brain state before I interact with parents. Mr. Pickett’s effort to foster a positive relationship with my family and my son has shown me a way to support both students and their parents.

1. Why does a parent say hurtful things?
A.They dislike teachers.B.They are easily upset.
C.They are much too stressed.D.They are willing to let their anger out.
2. What happened to Andrew as a newcomer in high school?
A.He was physically ill.B.He had emotional suffering.
C.He tried to escape his family.D.He quarreled with his teacher.
3. Why did Andrew begin to study Spanish hard?
A.He wanted to change everything.
B.He was persuaded by his parents.
C.He realized the importance of the subject.
D.He got care and appreciation from the teacher.
4. Who is the intended reader?
A.Students.B.Teachers.C.Parents.D.Doctors.

It was early morning, yet already it had been a very bad day. One thing after another, the downward spiral (螺旋) continued when a large bottle of orange juice slid from my hands and fell to the floor. Glass and sticky juice splashed to the farthest corners of the kitchen. Shocked, I looked at the mess. Then I dropped heartbrokenly down to the floor, my eyes filling with tears. The tears seemed to show that “today is just not my day.”

Bad day or not, things had to be done. Filled with anxiety and negative mental baggage, I got in my car to drive into town. In the few minutes it took to travel to the bank I made a decision. I would be careful not to pass my bad day off to anyone else. I would be friendly and polite. And I would NOT be angry when that careless driver pulled quickly and rudely in front of me causing me to brake suddenly.

Standing in line at the bank, I was silently talking to myself. Actually, I was scolding myself. All of the events that had accumulated and contributed to my bad day were, in reality, so very minor and trivial. I was over-reacting. I was filled with self-pity. I tried to imagine the innumerable, individual lives that had been affected by terrorist attacks, by war, by hurricanes, earthquakes, and other natural disasters.

For the second time that day my eyes filled with tears as I realized how disconnected I felt from all those individuals who are trying to cope with truly miserable experiences in their lives.

They all seemed so distant and unknowable, and this justified and strengthened my belief that I was being self-centered and selfish. I was sure that all my efforts to be a caring and loving person were in vain.

A voice broke through my mental distractions. Somehow I had mechanically finished my bank transaction (交易) and the teller was trying to get my attention. “Young lady,” she was saying, gently, “Young lady!”
