文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。迈克尔三岁时就被收养了,但他与养父母的关系不紧密。他经常待在朋友家中,因为朋友的父亲对他特别好,成为他一生崇拜的偶像。

2 . In a quiet Northern California neighborhood, Michael seemed like a normal 11-year-old boy. His family made use of the Californian sunshine to grow orange trees and roses. All seemed good from the outside, but Michael was troubled.

Since he was taken in at 3 years old, Michael never really connected with his parents. There was a strictness about them that his nature couldn’t understand, and he was left to himself to sort out (整理) confusing feelings and the need for connection.

Without the tie a young boy needs at home, Michael often found himself down the street at his best friend’s house. Of course, the two boys laughed, read picture books and ate junk food. But the real reason why Michael liked his friend’s home was Mr. Christensen. He was the kind of father who understands boys.

With Mr. Christensen, the boys spent hours in the garage fixing an old sports car. They drove up the California coast at high speed, feeling the salt wind wash over them. The car was too loud to allow for any conversation, which was fine with Michael. He didn’t yet know how to express his feelings; for the time being, just being able to feel them was enough.

For many young boys, the language of connection is written in the wrenches (扳手) they and their parents turn, the wrestling matches they watch, the hours of their watching clouds race by overhead. Mr. Christensen understood that boys need time to learn this language. He knew a boy learns respect and duty by being loved in an unspoken way.

Some 50 years later, Michael remembers his time with Mr. Christensen. “My own father couldn’t raise me, so I was given away. My adoptive father (养父) did his best but never allowed a relationship to form between us. Luckily for me, I had Mr. Christensen. I have tried to be the kind of father he was, teaching, having fun and spending time with my child.”

1. What was the problem with young Michael?
A.He had to do hard work on the farm.
B.He dropped out of school with his best friend.
C.He was given up by his parents as a little kid.
D.He was treated badly by his adoptive parents.
2. What made the two boys unable to talk in the car?
A.Strong wind.B.Too loud noise.C.Busy repair work.D.Driving excitement.
3. How is the language of connection learned in the author’s opinion?
A.By taking part in competitions.B.Through communication.
C.By studying hard.D.Through doing things together.
4. Who may Michael want to follow in his life?
A.Mr. Christensen.B.His friends.
C.His own father.D.His adoptive parents.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍的是20世纪50年代,英国历史学家Northeaster Parkinson提出的Parkinson’s Law of Triviality概念,也称为bike-shedding。

3 . In the 1950s, British historian Northeaster Parkinson came up with a concept which was later known as Parkinson’s Law of Triviality. It states that the amount of time spent discussing an issue in an organization is oppositely associated with its actual importance.

Parkinson’s Law of Triviality is also known as “bike-shedding (车棚)”, after the story Parkinson uses to illustrate it. He asks readers to imagine a financial committee meeting to discuss a three-point agenda. The points are as follows: A proposal for a f10 million nuclear power plant; A proposal for a f350 bike shed; A proposal for a f21 annual coffee budget.

What happens? The committee ends up running through the nuclear power plant proposal in little time. It’s too advanced for anyone to really dig into the details. The discussion soon moves to the bike shed. Here, everyone’s an expert. In the end, the committee runs out of time and decides to meet again to complete their analysis.

Bike-shedding happens because the smaller a matter is, the more people will have an opinion on it, even when there is no real value to add. When something is outside of our circle of competence, like a nuclear power plant, we don’t even try to express an opinion. But when something is understandable everyone wants to show that they know about the topic at hand.

How can we avoid bike-shedding? The main thing you can do is to have a clear purpose. Priya Parker, the author of The Art of Gathering: How We Meet and Why It Matters, says that any successful gathering needs to have a focused purpose. “Specificity,” she says, “is a key element.”

When it comes to choosing your list of invitees, Parker writes, “if the purpose of your meeting is to make a decision, you may want to consider having fewer cooks in the kitchen.” Getting the result you want—a thoughtful, educated discussion about that power plant—depends on having the right people in the room.

1. What is Parkinson’s purpose of presenting the imaginary meeting?
A.To state a fact.B.To clarify a concept.C.To make a prediction.D.To introduce a new point.
2. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?
A.The more you know, the less you speak.
B.What is simple for you may be tough for others.
C.What requires more work may get less attention.
D.The more you put in, the better your result will be.
3. Which is the author’s suggestion for a successful meeting?
A.Planning before the meeting.B.Getting the right people to the table.
C.Spending less time on the minor issues.D.Taking different opinions into account.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Purpose: The Key to an Effective Meeting
B.Talent: A Crucial Element in Organizations
C.The Bike Shed Effect: Avoiding Small Matters
D.Nuclear Power Plant: The Less-known Proposal

文章大意:本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。文章讲述了作者的女儿把作者的旧照翻新了,作者将50年前的照片与现在的自己相对比,发出了一些感慨。

4 . My daughter has a new app on her phone that can brighten up old photographs. She used it to make copies of pictures from my old photo albums look better, and emailed them back to me. There were pictures of Mom, Dad, my brothers, me and my first dog, Duke. Looking at them brought back so many loving and happy memories. I even put one on my computer as my new screen saver.

It is a picture of me sitting in my favorite chair, next to a bookcase full of old books. I am wearing my special sweatshirt and hugging Duke. There is a big smile on my face. It was howl spent a lot of my winter afternoons as a boy, hugging Duke and reading old books.

It is strange that the boy still lives inside me 50 years later. I still love comfortable chairs, warm stoves, sweatshirts, hugging dogs and reading books on cold, winter days. Yet, when I look in the mirror now, all I see are thinning and graying hair, age spots and lots of wrinkles. The only thing that hasn’t completely changed in that reflection is my eyes. They are hiding behind glasses now. They are set a little deeper in my eye sockets (眼窝). Only the innocence in them has been replaced with wisdom. But they still have that same joyfulness.

Looking at the little boy smiling at me from the computer screen and that 56-year-old man looking back at me in the mirror can be a bit confusing at times. They seem so different. Still, they are both me. It is one of those things we have to deal with being eternal (永久的) souls living inside temporary bodies. Perhaps the best thing we can do is to pay less attention to those reflections in the mirror and more to the reflections of our lives. We are all here to reflect back love to everyone here on Earth. And when we do, we remain both joyful and forever young.

1. What did the author’s daughter do with her new app on her phone?
A.She brightened up his old pictures.B.She put several pictures into his emails.
C.She searched for a screensaver for him.D.She created a scene about his childhood.
2. What can we know about the author as a boy?
A.He often felt lonely.B.He loved reading books.
C.He was forced to study.D.He was quite troublesome.
3. What can be inferred about the author from paragraph 3?
A.His hobbies have changed a lot.B.He is annoyed about his looks.
C.Time leaves few marks on him.D.He is a happy and mature man.
4. What message does the author seem to convey in the text?
A.Aging is unavoidable for everyone.B.A happy childhood is very important.
C.Loving others can bring us happiness.D.We should take good care of ourselves.

Long ago, there was a big apple tree. A little boy loved to come and play around it every day. He climbed to the top of the tree, ate the apples, and took a nap under the shadow. He loved the tree and the tree also enjoyed playing with him.

As time went by, the little boy grew up and he no longer played around the tree.

One day, the boy came back to the tree, appearing sad. “Come and play with me,” the tree asked the boy gently.

“I am no longer a kid; I won’t play around trees any more,” the boy replied. “I want toys. I need money to buy them.”

“Sorry, but I don’t have money. However, you can pick all my apples and sell them. Then, you will have money.” The boy was so excited that he picked all the apples on the tree and left happily. The boy didn’t come back after that.

The tree was upset.

One day, the boy returned and the tree was so joyful. “Come and play with me,” the tree said.

“I don’t have time to play. I have to work for my family. We need a house for shelter. Can you help me?” “Sorry, I don’t have a house. But you can cut off my branches to build your house.” So the boy cut all the branches of the tree and left with delight.

The tree was glad to see him happy but the boy didn’t appear since then. The tree was again lonely and sad.

One hot summer day, the boy returned and the tree was delighted. “Come and play with me!” the tree requested.

“I am sad and becoming old. I want to go sailing to relax myself. Can you give me a boat?”“Use my trunk to build the boat. You can sail and be happy.” So the boy cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He went sailing and did not show up for a long time.

Eric was working in a selling business. He had been on the road visiting people for more than a month without going home. He couldn’t wait to get back to see his wife and children. It was coming up on Mother’s Day, and he usually tried to make it “back home”, but this year he was just too busy and too tired. The day when he was driving in a small town, he saw a flower shop. He said to himself, “I know what I will do. I’ll send my mother some roses.”

He stopped and went into the flower shop and saw a young man talking to the girl in it. “How many roses can I get for fifty dollars?” the boy asked. The girl was trying to explain that roses were expensive. Maybe the young man would be happy with something else.

“No. I have to have roses,” he said. “My mom was badly sick last year and I didn’t spend much time with her. I want to get something special. It has to be red roses, because that is her favorite,” He was stubborn.

The girl in the shop looked up at Eric and was just shaking her head. Something inside of Eric was touched by the boy’s voice. He wanted to get those roses so badly. Eric had been blessed (幸运的) in his business, and he looked at the girl and silently said that he would pay for the boy’s roses.

The girl looked at the young man and said, “OK, I will give you a dozen red roses for your dollars.” The young man almost jumped into the air. He took the flowers and ran out of the store. It was worth more than fifty dollars just to see that kind of excitement.

Eric ordered his own flowers and asked the girl to have it delivered to his mother. After that, with a relief he drove down the road. Not long after his driving, he saw the boy walking to a graveyard (墓地).

9 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文应为100左右。

David is a 22-year-old man. Not having received a college education, he found it difficult to find a job. He worked at a small company and wasn’t paid well. He thought life was unfair and often complained.

One day, his boss asked him to go to his office. To his sadness, he was told he didn’t need to come to work again.

That day, David didn’t go straight back to the small apartment he shared with another man. He wanted to find a quiet place and sit there quietly for some time. Having lost his job, he had no idea what to do.

He walked and walked. Finally he stopped in front of a beautiful house. The house had a very big garden behind it. He saw an old man sitting in the garden.

“The old man must be a millionaire (百万富翁)”, thought David. “How I wish I were him! If I were him, I wouldn’t have to work and I’d have a large amount of money. I would be the happiest man in the whole world.”

Thinking how poor he was, David was even sadder. He hurriedly walked forward and found a place and sat there quietly.

Finally, he became hungry and decided to go back home. On his way back home, he passed the old man’s house again. This time the man was sitting in his front yard. When David passed by him, he noticed that the old man was looking at him. The old man looked as if he admired him very much. David was confused. Why would such a rich man admire him? He was so poor while he was so rich.

Finally, David decided to have a talk with the old man. So he stopped and walked to the old man.

“Hello,” he said.

“Hello,” said the old man.

Then they started talking. David told the old man he really admired him.

“You have such a beautiful house. You’re so rich! How I wish I were you!” said David.

Hearing that, the old man smiled and said, “And I admire you, too! I wish I were you! If I were you, I’d still enjoy my youth. Now I’m so old. Wealth doesn’t mean much to me!”

Paragraph:

What the old man said struck (击中) David.
