One Saturday morning, I suddenly noticed my room was a completely mess, what really annoyed me. I realized too many useful things took up a lot of space. So I decided to throw it away and do some cleaning. It took me a whole day get all the works done. Finally the room was tidy again and everything was in the order.

This was also true for life: we add more and more to our life, hoped to get a better life. But sometimes the more we add, the bad our life becomes. After all, sometimes less is more.

As in all of my races, I didn’t _______ out in the front, I loved the pleasure of passing people as my strength overtook their premature speed.

Then without warning, my strength began to decrease. Neck and neck with one of my greatest competitors, I could see the finish line. I had begun the final dash into _______ when my knees became weak and my legs gave way. Nothing I could do would make them _______ weight.

I watched as runners rushed by me. Although I knew my dreams of victory were destroyed, I had to finish the race. However, my legs hurt badly. With all of the _______ left in me, I got on my hands and knees and crawled(爬), inch by inch, across the finish line. Voices, both _______ and familiar, cheered me on. I whispered, “I’m so sorry, Dad, I’m so sorry I __________ you.” He looked at me, saying, “You could never disappoint me. Sometimes these things just happen . All that matters is that you did your best.”

“But we worked so __________ . What about our dream?” He reached over for my hand and said, “Don’t you know that you are my dream and it has come true?”

4 . 语法填词

When an important holiday comes, I usually think of what gifts to buy or prepare for my family members. It is the act itself rather than the thing you buy that     1    (matter). Either a small present, a text message or a phone call can mean a lot to the receivers.     2    , I had never got anything from my son, who is a university student. Parents never forget to celebrate their children’s birthday, but their children seem to be very     3     (forget). They seldom do something in return.

Life is unpredictable, and you never know what will happen tomorrow. When my son came back during the summer vacation, my wife and I, as usual,     4     (meet) him at the station. On arriving home, much     5     my surprise, my son took out a wrist watch and gave it to me,     6     (say) it was a birthday gift for me. It is a very fashionable watch,     7     shows not only hours, minutes and seconds but days as well. You can imagine how surprised and excited I was at that moment.

Some people say children get too much care and love from their parents and just take them for granted. It is natural for people to have such concerns and     8    (worry), but things may not turn out as badly as    9     (expect). We need to look more at the positive side of life, as a famous writer once said, “Life is     10    best classroom one can never get.”

5 . Everybody who has dealt with any minor amount of stress has had the fantasy of packing up and running away from all of their problems, disappearing from the modern world almost entirely.

1     But he has done much further than thatand much more selfish. He has created what he calls “The Blockade”, a nearly total media blackout(封锁) that has allowed him to stay 100 percent ignorant of the day’s news outside of the weather, local real estate listings, and how the Cleveland Cavaliers are doing.

He doesn’t know about the chaos of Trump’s White House. He doesn’t know about the white supremacists(至上主义者) and neo-Nazis that marched in Charlottesville.    2     He doesn’t know who won out at the Oscars. Not only does he not look at newspapers and listen to white noise when he hangs out at a local café, but he also asks his mom not to talk about current events when they chat on the phone.

Hagerman’s Blockade means he doesn’t have to worry about the problems of his fellow citizens, his neighbors, or even some of his family members.     3     Of course not, because he can afford to have a financial adviser managing all of his investments. As a white male who has the opportunity to make (and save) a lot of money, he isn’t directly affected by many of the things that happen inside his country and to his fellow citizens.

It’s OK to tune out every once in a while and unplug or maybe take a break from Twitter for a week.     4     If everyone did what Hagerman did, there would be no United States. There would be no democracy. There would be no forward progress or people helping others in times of need.     5     “The first several months of this thing, I didn’t feel all that great about it,” said he.

A.Erik Hagerman has just done that.
B.Erik Hagerman is really selfish.
C.In fact, Hagerman also feels guilty sometimes.
D.However, opting out of the larger world completely does more harm than good.
E.Doesn’t he have any friends?
F.He doesn’t know about a school shooting.
G.Is he worried about his own money?

9 . 阅读下面短文,用英语简要回答文后所给的五个问题,并将答案写在答题卡对应位置。(注意:每题答语不超过15个单词)

Mr. Black was spending his holiday in Africa. One day he watched some elephants passing by. Each of them was tied to his front legs only by a small rope. To his great surprise, these large strong animals could easily run away, but they did not.

So Mr. Black asked the owner why not a single elephant made an attempt to break free. The owner said, ''When the elephants were very young, the same size ropes were used to tie them, and at that time the ropes were strong enough to hold them. Now they have grown big and strong, but they believe that the ropes still hold them and it is impossible to escape, so they never try to get away. ''

Sometimes people act like these elephants. They often give up after the first failures. In fact, the failures are part of learning. If we want to succeed, we should never give up, but try and try again.

1. Where was Mr. Black spending his holiday?
2. What was each of the elephants tied by?
3. How did Mr. Black feel when he saw the elephants did not try to get away?
4. Why do the elephants never try to break free?
5. According to the text, what should we do if we want to succeed?

10 . By the time I reached junior high, I was sure I wanted to be a nurse. If you didn’t study Latin, you couldn’t be a nurse, so I enrolled. Many Latin words were familiar to me. The hard part turned out to be the usage and creating sentences with the words that seemed so easy to pronounce. Several weeks into the course my teacher came to me, saying, “I think you should withdraw from this course. It seems to be too hard for you.”

That was the day I learned I wasn’t smart enough to become a nurse. With shame, I handed in my Latin textbook.

After high school, the years raced by. I married and had children. Then one day my husband John came home. “Carol, Max died this afternoon.” I looked at my husband with disbelief.

John was touched by this tragedy. Finally one evening he said, “Carol, Jackie has never worked and now she’s alone with four children. I've been thinking - if anything happens to me. I want you to be able to take care of yourself and the children. Why don’t you think about what you’d like to do and get the training you’ll need to do it?”

I signed up for the entrance exam for nursing programs. One day I received a letter from the schoo1. I wanted so badly to open it, but with my lack of confidence, I laid it on the kitchen counter saying, “I'm not in the mood for a rejection letter today.”

Finally I forced myself to open it. “Dear Carol,”I read. “We are pleased to inform you that you successfully passed the entrance exam.”

An insensitive teacher once stole my dream. If you have a dream, exhaust every effort to reach it. I’ve worked thirty years now as a nurse and I’ve never been more certain that this is what I was meant to be.

1. Why did John advise Carol to find a job?
A.To support the familyB.To provide more money for her kids
C.To live a more colorful lifeD.To be able to live independently
2. From the text, we know what the teacher said____________.
A.destroyed Carol’s dream to be a nurse.
B.helped Carol find her true interest
C.saved Carol from wasting her time
D.encouraged Carol to be careful in learning
3. After receiving the letter from the schoo1, Caro1____________.
A.was uncertain about the resultB.had no mood to read it then
C.didn’t take it seriously at allD.couldn’t wait to open it
4. What may be the best title for the text?
A.A dream too high to achieve.B.Too stupid to be a nurse?
C.Never too late to 1earn.D.A chance too important to miss
