1 . In a national spelling contest in America, an 11-year-old girl was asked to spell a certain word. But with her soft voice the judges were not sure if she spelled the word with the letter A or E.     1    At that time, the girl knew she had misspelled the word. But instead of lying and telling the judges she had said the correct letter, she told the truth that she had said the wrong letter.     2    As the girl walked off the stage, the entire audience stood on their feet clapping to applaud her honesty. Later, dozens of newspapers wrote about this 11-year-old girl’s courage and honesty, even when it cost her the contest.     3    Probably the biggest test of our character and honesty is what we would do if we knew we would never get caught. This young girl could easily have lied, and nobody would have known it but her. But that’s just it: she would know she did wrong.     4    This young girl was strong and smart enough to prize her own conscience and character more than the prize from a spelling contest. Her respect for herself was more important than any respect others might give her for winning a contest. She knew she would have to live with herself and the choice she made at the moment.    5
A.So she won the contest.
B.As a result, she lost the contest.
C.The judges wanted to give her another chance.
D.It’s been said, “If you cheat, you make yourself cheap.”
E.It’s so true that the choices you make today make what you are tomorrow.
F.They talked it over and finally decided to simply ask her what she had said.
G.But the fact is that she won the biggest contest that day: the contest of her character.

2 . How many people have I met who have told me about the book that they have been planning to write but have never yet found the time? Far too many.
This is Life, all right, but we do treat it like a rehearsal (排演) and, unhappily, we do miss so many of its best moments.
We take jobs to stay alive and provide homes for our families, always making ourselves believe that this style of life is merely a temporary state of affairs along the road to what we really want to do. Then, at 60 or 65, we are suddenly presented             with a clock and several grandchildren and we look back and realize that all those years waiting for Real Life to come along were in fact real life.
In America they have a saying much laughed at by the English:“Have a nice day!” They speak slowly and seriously in their shops, hotels and sandwich bars. I think it is a wonderful phrase, reminding us, in effect, to enjoy the moment: to value this             very day.
How often do we say to ourselves, "I'll take up horse-riding (or golf, or sailing) as soon as I get a higher position," only to do none of those things when I do get the higher position.
When I first became a reporter, I knew a man who gave up a very well paid respectable job at the Daily Telegraph to go and edit a small weekly newspaper. At the time I was astonished by what appeared to me to be his completely abnormal (反常的) mental             state. How could anyone turn his back on Fleet Street in central London for a small local area?I wanted to know.
Now I am a little older and possibly wiser, I see the sense in it. In Fleet Street the man was under continual pressure. He lived in an unattractive London suburb and he spent much of his life sitting on Southern Region trains.
1. The first paragraph of the passage tells us that____________.
A.we always try to find some time to write a book
B.we always make plans but seldom fulfill them
C.we always enjoy many of life's best moments
D.we always do what we really want to do
2. The underlined phrase "turn his back on" (paragraph 6) most probably means____________.
A.leave forB.return toC.give upD.rely on
3. The man ( paragraph 6) left his first job partly because he was____________.
A.in an abnormal stateB.under too much pressure
C.not well paidD.not respected
4. What probably the best title for the passage?
A.Provide Homes For Our FamilyB.Take Up Horse-riding
C.Value This Very DayD.Stay Alive

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。文章主要论述了两种形式的诚实——自身的诚实和付诸行动的诚实。

3 . Honesty comes in many forms. First there’s self-honesty. Is what people see the real article or do you appear through smoke and mirrors? I find that if I try to be something I’m not, I feel unsure of myself and take out a part from my PBA (personal bank account ). I love how singer Judy Garland put it, “Always be a first-class version (版本) of yourself, instead of a second-class version of somebody else.”

Then there’s honesty in our actions. Are you honest at school, with your parents, and with your boss? If you’ve ever been dishonest, I think we all have, try being honest, and notice how whole it makes you feel. Remember, you can’t do wrong and feel right. This story by Jeff is a good example of that:

In my second year of study, there were three kids in my math class who didn’t do well. I was really good at it. I would charge them three dollars for each test that I helped them pass. I’d write on a little piece of paper all the right answers, and hand them off.

At first I felt like I was making money, kind of a nice job. I wasn’t thinking about how it could hurt all of us. After a while I realized I shouldn’t do that anymore, because I wasn’t really helping them. They weren’t learning anything, and it would only get harder down the road. Cheating certainly wasn’t helping me.

It takes courage to be honest when people all around you are getting away with cheating on tests, lying to their parents, and stealing at work. But, remember, every act of honesty is a deposit (储蓄) into your PBA and will build strength.

1. The underlined part “appear through smoke and mirrors” in the first paragraph means “________”.
A.to be honest
B.to be unreal
C.to become clear
D.to come from an imagined world
2. Which of the following can best explain Judy Garland’s words?
A.Be your true self rather than follow others.
B.Don’t copy others or you can’t be the first class.
C.Make efforts to be the first instead of the second.
D.Don’t learn from others unless they’re excellent.
3. What does the author expect to show by Jeff’s story ?
A.honesty can be of great help.
B.A bad thing can be turned into a good one.
C.Helping others cheat can do good to nobody.
D.One should realize the wrong in his bad deeds.
4. In the last paragraph the author mainly wants to express ________.
A.one must be brave to be honest
B.it’s difficult to be honest when others are not
C.one should be honest when making a deposit
D.honesty in one’s actions can help him in the future

4 .    I was waiting for a phone call from my agent. He had left a message the night before, telling me that my show was to be cancelled. I called him several times, but each time his secretary told me that he was in a meeting and that he would call me later. So I waited, but there was still no call. Three hours passing by, I became more and more impatient. I was certain that my agent didn’t care about my work, and he didn’t care about me. I was overcome with that thought. I started to shout at the phone, “Let me wait, will you? Who do you think you are?”

At that time, I didn’t realize my wife was looking on. Without showing her surprise, she rushed in, seized the phone, tore off the wires, and shouted at the phone, “Yeah! Who do you think you are? Bad telephone! Bad telephone!” And she swept it into the wastebasket.

I stood watching her, speechless. What on earth…?

She stepped to the doorway and shouted at the rest of the house, “Now hear this! All objects in this room – if you do anything to upset my husband, out you go!” Then she turned to me, kissed me and said calmly, “Honey, you just have to learn how to take control.” With that, she left the room.

After watching a crazy woman rushing in and out, shouting at everything in sight, I noticed that something in my mood(情绪) had changed. I was laughing. How would I have trouble with that phone? 5 . Every day, life is made and lost. Every day, life goes on. Every day we experience some of the most important parts of life and may not even realize it: love, generosity, and perseverance. These values aren't just important to us; they make the world what it is.
Scientists say that gravitational(重力的)force makes the world turn, but some people say that love makes____go round. Love can be found anywhere: in families, friends, even complete strangers. Even if you can’t see it, you know it's there.
Love may connect people all over the world, but what would the world be without generosity? Whether after a national disaster, or a school fund-raiser, one thing is certain--it is better to give than to receive. Generosity is found everywhere and whether it's a large or small act, it makes a difference. Most of all, being generous is not something you need any qualifications for, but no matter what you do, it can make a difference, Sometimes, though, it takes effort to be generous, which leads us to perseverance.
Founding a country, riding a bike, or finishing an essay, these are all finished with perseverance. Perseverance is the one thing that can help us achieve whatever we want. It is what helps scientists to discover cures for diseases, and athletes to become champions. You may fail, but every time you make a mistake, that's one less to make the next time.
There is an infinite(无穷的)number of things we value, but without love, generosity and perseverance, we just don't think that our life or the world would be the way it is.
1. The underlined word “it” in the second paragraph refers to “ ______ ”.
A.the worldB.gravitational force
C.valueD.experience
2. To be generous, the author thinks _____.
A.you needn't make efforts
B.you should be qualified
C.you should give all you have
D.you will find it good to give
3. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Perseverance is the only thing that can help us to achieve success.
B.People don't understand the life they are experiencing at all.
C.We can find love in complete strangers sometimes,
D.What the world is like depends on gravity and love.
4. What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Success and Failure.B.Three Values.
C.Endless Love.D.Life full of Hope.

9 . How to Be a Winner
Sir Steven Redgrave
Winner of 5 Olympic Gold Medals
“In 1997 I was found to have developed diabetes (糖尿病). Believing my career was over, I felt extremely low. Then one of the specialists said there was no reason why I should stop training and competing. That was it—the encouragement I needed. I could still be a winner if I believed in myself. I am not saying that it isn’t difficult sometimes. But I wanted to prove to myself that I wasn’t finished yet. Nothing is to stand in my way.”
Karen Pickering
Swimming World Champion
“I swim 4 hours a day, 6 days a week. I manage that sort of workload by putting it on top of my diary. This is the key to success—you can’t follow a career in any field without being well-organized. List what you believe you can achieve. “Trust yourself, write down your goals for the day, however small they are, and you’ll be a step closer to achieving them.”
Kirsten Best
Poet & Writer
“When things are getting hard, a voice inside my head tells me that I can’t achieve something. Then, there are other distractions, such as family or hobbies. The key is to concentrate. When I feel tense, it helps a lot to repeat words such as ‘calm’, ‘peace’ or ‘focus’, either out loud or silently in my mind. It makes me feel more in control and increases my confidence. This is a habit that can become second nature quite easily and is a powerful psychological tool.”
