文章大意:本文主要介绍了在封闭期间,作者通过在父亲工作的敬老院做茶工的故事告诉我们有些小事也是值得珍惜的。

2 . For the past three months, I have been moonlighting (兼职) as a tea lady. A few weeks into lockdown and at the height of the COVID-19 crisis, my father’s care home had become desperately understaffed. So I volunteered my services.

I will admit that I also wanted to keep an eye on my father. Ever since he was diagnosed with dementia (痴呆), I had become concerned about his well-being. So I. turned up, put on a plastic apron and began wheeling a teapot around the ground floor.

It was a peculiar kind of job at first. I saw how the carers were putting themselves on the line every day. And how do you ask a dementia patient who has lost almost all their powers of speech and hearing how many sugars they want in their tea? I would often come away sweating. And saddened. The home lost a lot of patients to COVID-19 in a short span of time and seeing the suddenly empty beds was shocking.

But it was also - surprisingly - good fun. There were jokes shared by carers and the stories the elderly residents told. The place grew on me until it became the highlight of my day. I looked forward to seeing the old lady who would say “Thank you” and blow me a kiss every time I left her a cup of tea. Another said he’d started painting later in life and now his amazing work hung all around his room. And there was a former university lecturer who had researched nursing and never left a crossword unfinished.

The figures I had passed so often taught me that sitting by a sunny window drinking a cup of warm tea held its value. I have read about the meditative (冥想的) effects of running and I found the same absorbing feeling in the ritual of making tea. It is simple, wholesome, and brings calmness. To me, this has been lockdown’s greatest gift.

1. Why did the author choose to volunteer in the care home?
A.Because it was short of workers.B.Because she was free at that time.
C.Because her father wanted her company.D.Because she was interested in voluntary work.
2. What made the work of making tea difficult in the care home?
A.The huge needs of tea from the patients.
B.The increasing seriousness of COVID-19.
C.The failure of speaking and hearing of some patients.
D.The lack of natural resources during the lockdown.
3. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The knowledge the author learned.B.The daily life in the care house.
C.The challenges of making tea.D.The great fun the job brings.
4. What does the author want to tell us through this passage?
A.It is never too late to learn.B.The parent-child relationship is the most important.
C.Sometimes we should value little things.D.Where there is a will, there is a way.

Like every boy there ever was, what Kyle Hrenwood most wanted in this world was a dog. Unfortunately for Kyle, his mom didn’t think he was responsible enough.

The day before Kyle’s thirteenth birthday, he went to the park and found a woman sobbing. He was immediately worried. Was the woman hurt?

He bent over and said “Miss, Are you OK? Do you want me to call anyone?” The woman shook her head and said, “My husband died two weeks ago, and I feel alone. We’d been together for thirty years. I can’t stand the silence inside that house. I’m Deidre. What’s your name?”

Kyle introduced himself and they talked for a long time. Kyle’s encounter with Deidre left him very sad, and he decided to go home. “Mom,” he said. “I don’t want to get married.” “Why not?” asked Kyle’s mom. “What if you spend thirty or forty years with someone,” Kyle said. “And then he is dead, and you’re alone?” Mom said, “Then you’ll miss out on love. You see, if you protect yourself from feeling pain, you’re cutting yourself off from happiness. You may discover those thirty years alone are not worth living.”

The next day, he had one of the biggest surprises and greatest joys of his life—a puppy! That was when he remembered Deidre was alone in her huge house.

A few hours later, Kyle knocked on Deidre’s door holding the puppy. He said, “Today is my birthday, and my parents gave me this puppy. You need this puppy more than I do.” “Give my heart to an animal just so it can die in a few years’ time?” Deidre asked bitterly. “I don’t think so. I don’t need any more pain in my life!”

“My mom said that if you protect yourself from feeling pain, you’re cutting yourself off from happiness. too,” Kyle said.

“You’re right, Kyle!” Deidre said. “I do need this puppy. Maybe you can visit us both; I’ve never had a dog before and may need some advice!”

Over the next few years, Kyle and Deidre, and Max (that was the dog’s name) became great friends. Then Kyle’s dad was offered a job in another state, and the family moved away.

6 . When apologizing, make sure it is about them and not you

Last week, I asked my Instagram community to submit questions, and this one stood out to me. “I’ve hurt someone I love. She hates me. How do I say I am sorry?” We’ve all been there. We’ve all hurt someone we love –to various degrees.     1

You probably hold powerful beliefs about apologizing. Explore any hesitation or fears you may have. It can be helpful to reflect on how your family has dealt with mistakes and forgiveness while you were growing up.     2    If apologizing is new to you, validate (证实) how scary and uncomfortable it may feel to admit you were wrong.

3    Why do you want to apologize? Is it sincere or manipulative (善于欺骗他人的)? Did you do something that actually deserves an apology or are you trying to keep peace? Before apologizing, pause and reflect on why you are saying sorry.

Make sure not to make it about you. Although you might regret your actions and feel all the feelings, this is not a time or place when they should be comforting you.    4     It’s about them and their hurt. It’s about you showing them that you understand how you hurt them, taking responsibility, and changing your behavior from now on.

An apology is not a magic cure.     5       It will take time for the relationship to repair and perhaps shift into its new dynamic (动态). An apology can strengthen a relationship, but it may also just allow you to part ways in a friendly way.

A.Your feelings count.
B.Your intention matters.
C.It’s not about you right now.
D.Here are several things to keep in mind.
E.This is not a circumstance for you to flee.
F.Has your family modelled what an apology sounds like?
G.Just because you apologized, it doesn’t mean everything will go back to normal.

The day was Thankful Thursday, our “chosen day” of service. It’s a weekly tradition that my two little girls and I began years ago. Thursday has become our day to go out in the world and make a positive contribution, however small it is. On this particular Thursday, we had no idea exactly what we were going to do, but we knew that something would present itself.

Driving along a busy Houston road,I prayed for guidance in our quest to fulfill our weekly Act of Kindness.Around the noon hour, my two little ones wasted no time in letting me know their hunger, chanting, “McDonald’s, McDonald’s, McDonald’s“ as we drove along. And I began searching earnestly for the nearest McDonald’s. Suddenly I realized that almost every crossroad I passed through was occupied by a beggar. And then it hit me!

If my two little ones were hungry, then all these beggars must be hungry, too. Perfect! Our Act of Kindness had presented itself. We were going to buy lunch for the beggars. After finding a McDonald’s and ordering two Happy Meals for my girls, I ordered an additional 15 lunches and we set out to deliver them. It was exciting. We would pull alongside a beggar, make a contribution, and tell him or her that we hoped things got better. Then we’d say, “Oh, by the way... here’s lunch.” And then we would head to the next crossroad.

It was the best way to give. There wasn’t enough time for us to introduce ourselves or explain what we were going to do, nor was there time for them to say anything back to us. The Act of Kindness was anonymous and empowering for each of us, and we loved what we saw in the rear view mirror: a surprised and delighted person holding up his lunch bag and just looking at us as we drove off. It was wonderful!
