Kyrgyzstan(吉尔吉斯斯坦) is a mountainous country where nearly two thirds of the people live in rural areas. The UN notes that the local economy depends     1    (heavy)on farming. So it is rare for any Kyrgyz to choose technology     2     a career path.

The UN Development Programme studied records about the country’s college     3    (graduate)in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, construction and manufacturing. It found that women make up less than 10 percent of those graduates.

3 . Slash(斜杠)Careers

What is your job? Are you a teacher or a businessperson? Or maybe you are a lawyer/writer or a teacher/photographer.    1    The term “slash career” comes from the punctuation mark(标识符)—a slash that comes between job titles.

People with slash careers often have a primary job that provides for most of their needs. The primary job usually comes before the slash.    2    This secondary job can help supplement the person’s income.

Why would anyone want more than one job? Some people look to their jobs for opportunities to develop their interests. But most people have too many interests for one job. Secondary jobs can be enjoyable if they include interests that the primary job doesn’t touch. Some people who encourage slash careers say they actually help with work-life balance.    3

On the other hand, a slash career can be dangerous for work-life balance.    4    One might give up necessary things like relaxation, exercise or time with one’s family. People with slash careers need to think carefully about how they use their time. This includes knowing when to stop working.

The clear advantage to slash careers is the extra income that secondary jobs provide. It’s always helpful to have a little extra money to spend or to save.

5    With a slash career, losing one’s job does not mean losing one’s entire income. Or a secondary job may be so successful that it can turn into one’s primary job.

If your interests stretch beyond your ordinary job, a slash career may work for you.

A.Slash careers provide extra money.
B.Slash careers also make one’s life more stable.
C.Working more than one job can fill up all of your time.
D.If you have more than one job, you have a slash career.
E.It shows the person is creative and willing to work hard.
F.The job after the slash is often based on a person’s interests.
G.That’s because they can give people an opportunity to express themselves.

5 . In 2016, I lost my long-term job. The company simply went through serious changes, and my position was no longer needed. They were great to me when I worked there, and they gave me a small severance package (辞退补偿). I was 55 at the time. I was more than a bit anxiety-ridden, as I wasn’t in a position to retire, and I was concerned about the prospects of being rehired at this age. The good news is that I was a saver, had no debt (债务) and always lived simply. My husband’s job carried the benefits.

I woke up every morning at 4 am to consider how best to use my resources, and ended up starting a small business. Once I started, I made mistakes and messed things up, but kept educating myself more and more. There were tough times that were not easy to get through, but I managed to keep going.

After about 18 months, it was working! Everything fell into place, and the train finally started going down the track! Now, I wake up each day and think, “I own a small business!” My husband even took early retirement to partner with me.

While we are not making $1 million, we have crossed over into six digits (数位) over the past few years. We run our business out of a home office. And I offer a service based on my knowledge from my previous job that I lost.

Now several times a month, friends and former workmates reach out to us to ask how they can also get started like what we do. Though we’re busy, we take the time to talk with them sometimes. I know they really need help.

Nowadays it’s easy to lose our jobs. Luckily, we’ve gained work experience, which can be really helpful if we want to start our own business. So don’t be too frustrated if you lose your job. It might be a new opportunity for you.

6 . When planning for a new job, many people will go through a job interview.     1         Fear of the unknown, fear of public rejection and fear of personal criticism all come together in one meeting. So how should you prepare for a job interview ? It's often a combination of careful research, psychology and an ability to think on your feet.

One way is to do a great deal of research, like finding the requirements of the job, the company's product lines, the industry's standard salary for the position, the interviewer, etc. When doing research, don't forget to learn about whether you have unique qualifications for the position.     2    Thus, prepare your unique aspects which will make you stand out among interviewees ahead of time.

3     Do you express your ideas clearly? Do you actively listen to others ? How you perform inthe interview will leave a deep impression on the interviewers.

Some job seekers prepare for a job interview by conducting their own mock (模拟的) interviews. A trusted friend or even a professional job coach can act as an interviewer, asking many of the same questions a real interviewer might ask. In view of your performance, these people may be able to point out your trouble spots.    4

There're also numerous resources job seekers can use to prepare for a job interview.     5     Many cities also have programs helping first-time workers find jobs. They may offer classes on how to prepare for a job interview or provide job coaches who can conduct mock interviews.

A.You should consider how to be qualified.
B.Self-help books may be available at public libraries.
C.Another way is to work on your outward appearance.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。本文主要讲述一个研究结果,一个性格特征与理想工作相匹配的员工可能比那些性格特征不一致的员工挣得更多。

7 . An employee whose personality traits closely match the traits that are ideal for his or her job is likely to earn more than an employee whose traits are less congruent (一致的), according to new research.

Findings from previous research have shown that some personality traits are generally beneficial when it comes to a work environment. Being highly conscientious (勤勉认真的), lead researcher Jaap J.A. Denissen notes, is connected with being hard-working and well-organized, qualities that are typically prized in employees. But Denissen questioned the idea that there is an ideal personality type. The researchers thought that the match, or mismatch, between a person's traits and job requirements, might be important when it comes to important outcomes like income.

The researchers developed a new way of directly comparing the fit between a given employee and a given job, using the well-established Big Five personality traits to quantify (量化) the traits that a job requires. The researchers examined personality, yearly income, and jobs of 8,458 persons living in Germany.

The results showed that fit really does matter, at least when it comes to extraversion, agreeableness, and openness to experiences. For these three traits, greater congruence between an employee's own personality and a job's requirements was connected with higher income. Importantly, the data also showed that employees who were more agreeable, more conscientious, or more open to experiences than their jobs required actually earned less than people who had congruent levels of those traits.

The researchers note that additional studies will be required to understand how job experiences, job satisfaction, and job performance might influence the association between the individual job personality fit and income. The results of the present study do suggest that achieving the right fit requires a special approach to knowing both personal traits and job-related traits. Paying attention to the approach could have important implications for both employees and employers.

1. What does the previous research show?
A.Conscientious people earn much.
B.Certain personality traits are advantageous in jobs.
C.Job requirements are decisive in choosing an employee.
D.People's income can be predicted simply by the work environment.
2. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.How the new research was done.
B.A study on Big Five personality traits.
C.Denissen's opinions on previous research.
D.Why certain personalities are needed for a job.
3. What is the result of the new research?
A.Employees with a strong personality earn more than others.
B.Having too little of a given trait will cause less job satisfaction.
C.A perfect individual job personality fit contributes to higher income.
D.Conscientious employees earn more than those who are open to experiences.
4. What do researchers say about their new research?
A.It still needs further studies.
B.It has been applied to job interviews.
C.It will help people find the right job easily.
D.It has proved the previous study totally wrong.

8 . Li Jian, aged 61, is a senior lab scientist at the Chengdu Institute of Biology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and has dedicated himself to scientific sketching (速写) in the area of animal and plant taxonomy (动植物分类学). Over the past 40-plus years, he has sketched thousands of animal and plant drawings with a scientific attitude and superb skills, presenting to readers more than 730 species on the planet.

Over decades of work, Li has developed a particularly keen eye that helps him identify even the tiniest features of animals and plants. “It is impossible for an animal to arrange every part of its body in the way we want it to be so that we can take a clear picture of it,” Li said, explaining the necessity of scientific sketching in research work. “Different from works of art, my drawings require a high level of scientific rigor (严谨),” he said.

In animal and plant taxonomy, species are often identified through tiny features. Take frogs, for example. Some have long fingers, while others have short ones. Some have fingers that are unwebbed, some partially webbed, and others fully webbed. The tip of their fingers can be pointed or round, and with or without long narrow cuts. “When I sketch, I must sketch accurately. Sometimes, I need to study the structure of my subject under a microscope before getting down to draw,” he said.

Usually, it took Li about ten days to draw a palm-sized animal. For complicated animals like snakes covered in scales, it would take him more than half a month. A big obstacle Li encountered in his work was the fading of the color in samples as a result of long-time immersion in chemicals. In this case, he would need to rely on known morphological (形态学的) characteristics of the samples and text descriptions to make his sketches more accurate.

“With the assistance of Li’s large number of high-quality drawings, China’s illustrated scientific publications rank among the best in the world,” said Fei Liang, a famous Chinese zoologist.

1. What does Li Jian do as a lab scientist?
A.Do experiments on animals.

2. Which of the following best describes Li Jian’s attitude to his job?

3. What makes Li’s work difficult?
A.Drawing snakes is dangerous.
B.Samples are badly kept.
C.Samples’ colors become lighter.
D.There are too little descriptions.
4. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.Sketching with A Scientific Touch.
