文章大意:本文是一篇访谈。Mitu Khandaker就游戏设计师这个职业的影响、要求以及对未来游戏设计师的建议谈了自己的想法。

1 . Do you enjoy playing video games? Have you ever thought about what it would be like to design them for a living? Let’s talk with Mitu Khandaker to learn about her cool career as a video game designer.

What’s it like to be a game designer?

Being a game designer is like wearing a lot of different hats at once.     1    . Another minute, I might be solving a design problem, or creating art. The other part of the job is working with people. It’s very collaborative (协作的).

What makes a great game designer?

The best game designers are people who have a wide range of interests, because you want to bring those into games.     2    , but you might also be someone who loves painting or writing stories, or making music, or even just listening to music. For instance, I love listening to hip-hop and rap. Whatever your interests are, there is a space for that in games to tell these amazing new stories.

    3    ?

I would love for my work to change the way people think about representation in games. I’m all about telling stories that make people feel seen. For me, growing up as a little brown girl, I didn’t see any characters who looked like me.     4    .

What’s your advice for future game designers?

5    , if you want to be a game designer. If you like writing stories, or you like drawing or painting or designing board games—whatever it is—there is a place for you in games. Don’t take no for an answer. That’s how I got to where I am.

4 . Choosing a career is one of those important decisions that can change the course of your life.    1     Ample information and self-examination can help you choose a satisfying career that you will enjoy for years to come. If you feel confused about picking a career, you're not alone. We're here to help!

Evaluate your work style. The right career for you will be suited to your work style. Do you need the discipline of a structured work environment to do your best?    2     There are, of course, other factors that affect your job performance. But, your natural work style plays a big role.

Identify your skills. Every career requires a different skill set. Sales managers need great leadership skills, and teachers need to be able to communicate effectively with both students and parents.    3    List every talent and skill you have, even if it doesn't seem like it will help you get a job.

4     What do you want out of a career? Do you want to help other people? Do you want to travel? How much money do you want to make? Of course, what you want to achieve often changes over time, and things that were once extremely important become less so.

Remember that things can change. There are a million "Best Careers" lists out there that will say you should have a certain career because you will make a certain amount of money with it.     5     There might be a lot of demand for a job now, but what about in 10 years? Don't choose a job just because it's number one on a list somewhere. Things can change over time, and the job that was once number one might end up not even making the list a few years from now.

A.Determine your goals.
B.It deserves considerable time and reflection.
C.Take some time to figure out what you're good at.
D.Ask questions about the advantages and disadvantages of the job.
E.Or do you like setting your own schedule and work independently?
F.However, there's no way to totally guarantee job security and stability.
G.Are you willing and able to put in that time and the money that comes with it?

5 . Telecommuting (also known as working from home, or e-commuting) is a work arrangement in which the employee works outside the office, often working from home or a location close to home.     1

Doctors, dentists, and countless other healthcare workers of the world will always need to be hands-on with patients, just as:

    2

► Scientists need to be in labs.

The existence of telecommuting must have its benefits and appropriate population.

More freedom.

Telecommuting allows a worker greater freedom regarding her or his work hours and work location. It gives the employee more flexibility to balance work and personal obligations.

Productivity.

Working from home can make you more productive, because you do not have the distractions (分心) of office space.     3     Sometimes you might be easily distracted by home appliances such as washing machines, or you actually need supervision from your boss to concentrate on your work.

Employees’ welfare.

Allowing workers to telecommute often makes them more productive.     4     Tele- commuters are also likely to be happier in their jobs and are therefore more likely to stay with the company. Telecommuting even saves companies money in office expenses (such as rent and stationery).

    5

Some people also find working from home to be a bit isolating, because you are not around your coworkers. Those who enjoy teamwork may lose their opportunity to bond with colleagues by teleconferencing alone. You should come up with a strategic plan if you want to ask your employer if you can telecommute.

A.Mental health issues.
B.Cooperation with workers.
C.That can benefit the company.
D.Of course, this is not necessarily true.
E.You need to find a productive place to do work.

6 . Rich and Famous

Twenty years ago the most common ambition of American children was to be a teacher, followed by working in banking and finance, and then medicine. But today’s situation is quite different.     1     Instead they most commonly say they want to be a sports star, a pop star, or an actor—in other words, they hope to become a celebrity .

According to experts, young people desire these jobs largely because of the wealth and the fame.     2     Let’s take athletes and singers as an example. Their careers are short-lived. Many athletes’ best time only lasts a few years and singers can have a very limited career. The field that was once the focus of their lives becomes something they have little or no involvement in. As a result, they’ll have a feeling of worthlessness and a lack of control.     3    The truth is quite simple: they have been so far removed from it for so long.

In spite of these disadvantages, there is greater ambition than ever among young people to achieve that status. They are not satisfied just making a living—they want to be rich and famous. Globally, more and more TV shows provide talent competitions where winners can achieve their goals in just a few weeks or months.    4    They unrealistically believe that this lifestyle is easily obtained and leads to great satisfaction.

While many people argue that there is nothing wrong with having such ambitions, others feel that this trend will finally lead to dissatisfaction as more and more people are unable to reach their goals.     5     That means they ignore the simple fact that great effort is needed before success. As a result, many people won’t realize their childhood dreams, which could have a negative effect on their happiness.

A.In many ways this has been brought about by the celebrity culture.
B.People no longer have a sense of satisfaction once their goals have been achieved.
C.Besides, it can be difficult for them to adapt back to a normal everyday life.
D.The younger generation don’t favor these professions any more.
E.Unfortunately, they do not always have a positive effect on people’s life.
F.The reason is that they don’t realize it takes talent and hard work to be rich and famous.
G.This quick way of gaining wealth and fame creates a celebrity culture among people.
