5 . In the US, tornadoes(龙卷风) are responsible for 80 deaths and more than 1,500 injuries each year. Although they happen quite frequently, tornadoes are difficult to predict. Why? Tornadoes develop from storms, but only some storms are likely to become tornadoes. Scientists don’t know where and when a storm will touch the ground and turn into a tornado. Today, the warning time for a tornado is usually just 13 minutes.

Time Samaras is a storm chaser. His job is to find tornados and follow them. When he gets close to a tornado, he puts a special tool called a turtle probe on the ground. This tool measures things like a tornado’s temperature, humidity (湿度), and wind speed. With this information, Samaras can learn what causes tornadoes to develop. If meteorologists(气象学家) understand this, they can warn people about tornadoes sooner and save lives.

How does Samaras hunt tornadoes? It’s not easy. First, he has to find one Tornadoes are too small to see using weather satellites. So Samaras can’t rely on these tools to find a tornado. Instead, he waits for tornadoes to develop. Every May and June, Samaras drivers about 40,000 kilometers across an area known as ToknownTornado Alley, looking and hoping to spot a tornado.

Once Samaras sees a tornado, the chase begins. But a tornado is hard to follow. Some tornadoes change direction several times—for example, moving east and then west and then east again. When Sanaras finally gets near a tonrnado, he puts the turtle probe on the ground. Being this close to a tornado is terrifying. Debris (碎片) is flying in the air . Then wind is blowing at high speed. 8 . My brother Stanley died last January from cancer, and I spent a lot of time with him in hospital over his last few months. I witnessed the care he received and,at the time,I thought it was poor. It shocked and hurt me.

While Stanley was sick,I was a medical student. I therefore put a lot of time and energy in the medical profession. It gave me an insider's view of the care Stanley received, when most people spending time with a very sick loved one only have an outside view. However,as I see now it made me judge the care that his doctors and nurses gave him too harshly(严厉的).

We experienced long waits in emergency departments, and doctors were unsure of the details of Stanley's case. We waited around for doctors to arrive, but they seldom turned up. But worst of all was Stanley's senior doctor. Near the end,he announced coldly that there was nothing left to try. “All the choices have been used,"he said. And with that,he left, never to be seen again.

All this affected the way I thought about my studies. Did I want to work in a field where people treated patients as if they were numbers on a chart? After Stanley died,I finished my studies and graduated with all the rest of students in my year. They went on to get jobs in hospitals, while I took a year out. I simply couldn't face working in medicine.

Finally,I applied for and got a position as a cancer doctor in a busy clinic in a big city. Now I was a cancer doctor myself, and I often had to tell patients bad news. It is a terribly difficult thing to inform someone that they have a serious illness. I also found that I couldn't always answer patients' questions. They would want to know whether they could be cured,or how long they would live, but it wasn't always possible to say.

It was then that I understood what difficult job health providers do. It made me think back to my experiences with doctors and nurses when Stanley was sick. Perhaps what I had thought was unprofessionalism(不专业)or coldness was just a reflection of the demanding nature of the work.

I began to see my patients as Stanley, and myself no longer as his sister, but one of his caregivers.

Now I was in their shoes-the people who spend every day caring for others.

I still miss Stanley horribly, but at least now the anger has gone.

A.suffered a serious illness
B.met Stanley's doctors again
C.communicated with her classmates

A.She put in efforts o save patients.
B.She gave up her study in medicine.
C.She applied for a job in a big city immediately.

9 . For most of her life, Suanne Laqueur’s passion for storytelling was shown on the dance floor.

Although Laqueur began writing at a young age, dancing always took center stage. She majored in dance and theater at Alfred University and taught at her mother’s dance studio in Croton-on-Hudson, New York, for years. But when her mother was ready to retire and an opportunity opened for Laqueur to take over the studio, she realized she had no interest in taking on the business side of her art: “Owning a studio is a lot of work—financially, logistically. I love the teaching, the choreographing(编舞), the staging, but I didn’t want to own it.”

Yet Laqueur’s disinterest in running the studio changed when she became a self-published author. In the fall of 2013, she decided to pursue Self-publishing as a way of sharing her first completed novel with friends and family. During the process, she realized that following her true passion—telling stories through writing—made the business of the art worthwhile, and owning that business meant she could direct her writing career however she chose.

Starting with her second self-published novel, she began investing more time in marketing and building her audience. Her investment paid off. Since 2014, Laqueur, now 49, has self-published six novels, which collectively have hundreds of ratings and reviews on Goodreads. Her 2016 novel An Exaltation of Larks stole the show at the 25th Annual Writer’s Digest Self-Published Book Awards, topping more than 2,300 entries to win the grand prize.

“You have to write the most truthful story to you, and I think self-publishing allows that freedom,’ she says. “If you work with traditional publishing, it’s more about what’s marketable, There are trade-offs, which everyone will tell you, but by self-publishing I have control of the book, I have control of the story, and I’m cool with that.”

1. From Paragraph 2,we can learn that Laqueur _______.
A.was a part-time writer when she was young
B.didn’t like teaching dancing in fact
C.wanted to own a publishing house
D.was interested in running her mother’s studio

10 . What’s the point of studying? It’s something you might ask yourself if you’re studying for a degree and you’re struggling to complete homework or in an exam, especially if your friends seem to be out having a good time, or are working and earning lots of money.

Many of us choose to go to university as a first step towards a good career but sometimes that career is to go to university as a first step towards a good career but sometimes that career is hard to achieve and graduates end up doing something they are overqualified for. With the increasing costs of university, students begin to ask themselves whether a degree path is the best route into a career, There is a need for much better career advice and guidance into employment in addition to university education.

But other new research says that a degree will in the long run, earn you more. However there are differences in your earning potential. Dr Jack Britton says that “graduates of the 24 Russell Group universities earn an average of £33,500 after five years - about 40% more than those who studied at other universities.”

However, it has found it’s not just the location but other factors that can play a part in what you can earn, such as the subject a student chooses to study. It discovered that five years after graduation, the income gap between students who studied the subjects that attract the highest and lowest salaries can be considerable. Graduates in subjects such as law, medicine, dentistry as well, tend to do well. And as they progress, the pay gap between these careers and others, such as the creative arts, widens. There are factors too that influence what you might earn: Five years after graduation, men earn on average 14% more than women. Also, a student’s social background can have an effect, with those from better-off household much more likely to go to university and particularly a good one.

But if you still feel university doesn’t deliver the best opportunities then there are encouraging words from Alistair Jarvis, head of universities UK, who told BBC News that “Employs are demanding more graduates and graduates are half as likely to be unemployed as likely to be unemployed as non-graduates. There are many good graduate outcomes coming from universities” So may all that studying is worth it-after all ‘no pain, no gain’!

1. Why do students start to question whether to go to university or not?
A.Because of the heavy studying burden.
B.Because they can’t get a degree after graduation.
C.Because they don’t need a degree for their career.
D.Because of the increasing costs of university.
2. Which major may most probably lead to a lower-earning career?
A.Medicine.B.Law.
C.Creative arts.D.Dentistry.
3. Which of the following is most likely to be fired according to Alistair Jarvis?
A.Graduates.B.Non-graduates.
C.Doctors.D.Employers.
4. What can be inferred from this passage?
A.Russell Group universities are top ones.
B.Most students go to university to get a good career.
C.One’s location has no effect on his income.
D.Graduates often have more academic qualifications than required for a particular job.
