文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。作者主要通过回忆少年时代送奶员给自己带来的快乐,想念那时的岁月,逝去的总是美好的和有趣的。

1 . When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s, we had a milkman delivering milk to our doorstep. His name was Mr. Basille. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a 5-year-old boy, I couldn’t take my eyes off the coin changer fixed to his belt. He noticed this one day during a delivery and gave me a quarter out of his coin changer.

Of course, he delivered more than milk. There was cheese, eggs and so on. If we needed to change our order, my mother would pen a note — “Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery” — and place it in the box along with the empty bottles. And then, the buttermilk would magically (魔术般) appear.

All of this was about more than convenience. There existed a close relationship between families and their milkmen. Mr. Basille even had a key to our house, for those times when it was so cold outside that we put the box indoors, so that the milk wouldn’t freeze. And I remember Mr. Basille from time to time taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories about his delivery.

There is sadly no home milk delivery today. Big companies allowed the production of cheaper milk, thus making it difficult for milkmen to compete. Besides, milk is for sale everywhere, and it may just not have been practical to have a delivery service.

Recently, an old milk box in the countryside I saw brought back my childhood memories. I took it home and planted it on the back porch (门廊) . Every so often my son’s friends will ask what it is. So I start telling stories of my boyhood, and of the milkman who brought us friendship along with his milk.

1. Mr. Basille gave the boy a quarter out of his coin changer to __________.
A.show his magical powerB.pay for the delivery
C.satisfy his curiosityD.please his mother
2. What can be inferred from the fact that the milkman had the key to the boy’s house?
A.He wanted to have tea there.B.He was a respectable person.
C.He was treated as a family member.D.He was fully trusted by the family.
3. Why does home milk delivery no longer exist?
A.Nobody wants to be a milkman now.B.It has been driven out of the market.
C.Its service is getting poor.D.It is not allowed by law.
4. Why did the author bring back home an old milk box?
A.He missed the good old days.B.He wanted to tell interesting stories.
C.He needed it for his milk bottles.D.He planted flowers in it.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了职场上男性和女性的差异,以及女性的优势。一些人认为男人天生就能成为更好的领导者,但是其实女性能够更好地领导整个团队。

2 . Regardless of how far we’d like to believe gender (性别) equality in the workplace has come, there’s still a yawning gap between male and female leaders in the professional world. A 2018 statistic shows that women nowadays hold just 5.8 percent of CEO positions at S&P 500 companies, according to Catalyst.

While it’s not a huge shock that women are somewhat underrepresented in leadership positions, what is surprising though, is the fact that females may actually be better suited to lead in almost every area, at least according to new findings from the BI Norwegian Business School.

In their research, Professor Martinsen and Professor Lars Glas surveyed 2,900 managers with a special focus on personality types. The results were clear: Women scored higher than men in four of the five major leadership-centric categories.

While some people believe that men inherently make better leaders—probably because they picture a leader with a commanding voice, which is more typical of men than women—this piece of research suggests that women are better at methodical management and goal-setting, openness, sociability and supportiveness, as well as ability to communicate clearly.

There was one area in which men scored higher than women, though, and that was on emotional stability and ability to face job-related pressure and stress. The results suggest that women are more sensitive to the effects of high-pressure or highly emotional situations.

Obviously, its important to consider individual differences.Anyone, regardless of gender may be an inspiring leader and a competent boss. But next time you're hiring for a management position, you just might want to give the resumes(简历)from female candidates a harder look.

1. What makes us shocked much at leadership positions?
A.Women are worse than men.
B.Men take almost all high positions.
C.There is a huge gap between genders.
D.Women might behave better in nearly every field.
2. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “inherently” in Paragraph 4?
A.properly.B.potentially.C.naturally.D.normally.
3. Which of the following may be the best title of this text?
A.Why Women Make Better Leaders
B.Why Women Are Better Than Men
C.How We Can Figure Out The Boss
D.How We Can Tell Gender Difference
4. Who might have special interest in this article?
A.Job hunters.B.Employers.C.Employees.D.Male bosses.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。阐述的是在工作中每个人都可能有不顺心的时候,而常怀感激之情可以帮助你赶走坏情绪。

3 . It goes without saying that everyone has bad days at work. You hit an unexpected problem with a project you’ve been working on for weeks.     1    You are severely criticized by your boss in the company. Whatever your workplace problem is, one effect it has is to make you feel more alone. There are times when you feel as though your colleagues are upset and you can only rely on yourself.     2

When you’re feeling upset about a problem at work, take a minute to think of someone in your life that you’re grateful to and write a sentence or two on a notepad about what you appreciate.     3     Why does it have such power? Gratitude is often a positive emotion you   feel when someone else has gone out of their way to do something helpful for you that they didn’t have to do. That person has done something selfless in order to make your life little---or perhaps a lot---better.

4     It might be a relative who took care of you when you were little, a teacher who   helped you out in a tough situation or a colleague who put you up for a great opportunity.

Picking one of those folks out and reminding yourself of why you’re grateful to them has two benefits.     5     It also reminds you of the deep social connections you have so that you   don’t feel quite as isolated anymore.

A.You have a quarrel with your beloved.
B.In those moments, a little gratitude can help
C.Here are some reasons to explain these situations.
D.All of us have people in our lives who fit that bill.
E.Research shows practicing gratitude can make you happier.
F.You forget the appointment with a VIP customer and keep him waiting.
G.For one, it gets you thinking about something positive and lifts your mood

5 . Do you like the idea of running your own business from home? Most of you do, and the first things you say you like about it are being your own boss, having flexible hours and working in your pajamas.    1

Being your own boss is definitely one big advantage.    2     You must commit to work on your business regularly to make profits. If not, you will find that your income becomes non-existent.So, have set office hours where you productively work on building your business.

3    Doctors’ appointments and family commitments can simply be worked into your schedule. Again, you need to arrange your appointments carefully and try to book them together. This way you can get all of your running around done in one day.

Working in your pajamas may seem appealing initially. But it can also prevent you from actually getting your work done.     4     After that, just walk into your office and start your day’s work. Being too casual means getting less work done on a regular basis.

In order to run a successful business from home you need to have a good mindset.    5

Taking off too many hours each week will damage your financial stability and long-term success. Set goals and limits on your time. Build your business first, before taking advantage of what working from home offers.
A.But it can also become your downfall without care.
B.Flexible hours are another huge plus of working from home.
C.Once it's achieved, you'll have more opportunities to develop business contacts.
D.You may find it more efficient to get up, exercise, then shower and dress for work.
E.This includes realizing that you and only you are responsible for your own income.
F.One of the biggest drawbacks is that it is so easy to allow yourself to have excuses.
G.While these benefits sound great, the reality of working from home can be a little different.

6 . If you think about it, work-life balance is a strange ambition for a fulfilling life. Balance is about stasis(静止): if our lives were ever in balance—parents happy, kids taken care of, work working—then our overriding thought would be to shout “Nobody move!” and pray all would stay perfect forever. This false hope is made worse by the categories themselves. They imply that work is bad, and life is good. And so the challenge, we are told, is to balance the heaviness of work with the lightness of life.

Yet work is not the opposite of life. It is instead a part of life—just as family is, as are friends and community. All of these aspects of living have their share of uplifting moments and moments that drag us down. The same is true of work. Treat work the same way you do life: by maximizing what you love.

We have interviewed several anesthesiologists (麻醉师) about the thrills they feel in their jobs. One said he loved the thrill of holding each patient hovering at that one precise point between life and death. Another said she loved the bedside conversations before the operation aiming to calm the panic that affects many patients. Another was drawn mostly to the anesthetic mechanism and has devoted himself to defining precisely how each drug does what it does.

Think of your life’s many different activities as threads. Some are black and some are white. But some of these activities appear to be made of a different substance. These activities contain all the tell-tale signs of love: before you do them, you find yourself looking forward to them; while you’re doing them, time speeds up and you find yourself in flow; and after you’ve done them, you feel energetic. These are your red threads, and research by the Mayo Clinic suggests that doctors who weave the fabric (织物) of their life with at least 20% red threads are significantly less likely to experience burnout.

The simplest way for you to do this is to spend a week in love with your job. During the week, any time you find yourself feeling one of the signs of love write down exactly what you were doing in the column “Love”. And any time you find yourself feeling the inverse write down what you were doing in the column “Loathe”. By the end of the week you will see a list of activities in your “Love”column, which create in you a positive feeling, one that draws you in and lifts you up.

Our goal should be to, little by little, week by week, intentionally unbalance all aspects of our work toward the former and away from the latter. Not simply to make us feel better, but so that our colleagues, our friends and our family can all benefit from us at our very best.

1. What is the author’s attitude towards work-life balance?
A.Doubtful.B.Disapproving.C.Supportive.D.Neutral.
2. “Red threads” in Paragraph 4 refer to the activities that __________.
A.arouse your passionB.satisfy your desires
C.improve your motivationD.require your efforts
3. Which of the following does the author probably agree with?
A.Red threads are necessary for a balanced life.
B.Recording activities helps create positive feeling.
C.Find love in work instead of keeping work-life balance.
D.Maximize what you love to remove the heaviness from work.

7 . Countless people’s first jobs were part-time positions. This is partly because full-time jobs are more difficult to obtain, and part-time jobs require less responsibility in general. Employers like to hire people for part-time jobs, as they often do not require them to hand out benefits. My first official part-time job was working at my community college as a writing and English tutor.

I still got poor grades in English and writing in high school. It was only in college that I began to flourish (起色) with a pen and paper. By my second year of college, I was often getting “A” grades or hearing praise from my professors. I think this transformation happened due to my enthusiasm for written word, and this excitement assisted me in overcoming my difficulties.

What astonished me most in my part-time job was that the ESL (English as a second language) students were often better writers than the native people I tutored. I think this was due to the fact that they seriously studied English grammar, punctuation and composition, whereas the native speakers took English for granted. What also surprised me was how people-friendly I could be. In high school, I was mostly a loner, and found comfort in books, my chess board and my computer. But in college, I became increasingly outgoing through my job.

I believe this experience is not only a great step forward towards full-time office work, but it’s also taught me that I love teaching and interacting with people of various backgrounds. In addition, I’ve learned the joy of working around my own schedule. Through having several part-time jobs, I can say that this type of work allows one to be happier, healthier, and have a better outlook on one’s assignments.

1. What can we learn from the passage?
A.Part-time jobs are harder to acquire than full-time jobs.
B.Part-lime jobs are win-win for both applicants and employers.
C.Teaching people from different cultures was too demanding.
D.The writer suffered a lot from the tight schedule as a tutor.
2. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The benefits of excellent writing.
B.The difficulties in learning to write.
C.The writer's writing courses in college.
D.The writer's experience in leaning to write.
3. What did the writer find in his pant-time job?
A.Efforts were often in vain for ESL learners.
B.Many native speakers were talented writers.
C.He became more easy-going and sociable.
D.He was addicted to reading and chess-playing.

8 . 54-year-old Abdul has a special job. He has been working as a living statue for over three decades, standing perfectly still for six hours a day and resisting people’s attempts to make him move or smile, anything that proves he is a living person.

Abdul, known as “India’s Statue Man”, has been performing his daily routine ever since 1985, soon after getting a job as a security guard. His boss had recently traveled to the UK, where he was so impressed by the statue-like members of the Royal Guard outside Buckingham Palace that he wanted to do something similar back home. So he had his guards receive three months of training, where they would sit perfectly still for around four hours. They weren’t allowed to talk or smile, eat, drink, or even shoo away a fly if it sat on their faces. In the end, Abdul proved the best of the group, so he got the strange job.

Abdul isn’t the only person in the world acting as a living statue, but what makes him special is the fact that he can do it for as long as six hours without even blinking his eyes. Once, a $ 155 prize was put up for anyone who can make him move a muscle. But try as they might, no one has ever succeeded. Actually, Abdul tries to move about as much as he can in his spare time, and only eats healthy home-cooked food, to keep his body in shape. But he claims yoga has been the biggest help. In the 32 years, Abdul has become a celebrity in India and other Asian countries. Many Bollywood celebrities have come to witness this living statue and try to finally make him move, but none have succeeded.

Abdul earns about 10,000 rupees ($ 156) a month, which is enough to support his family, but definitely not enough to encourage his children to follow in his footsteps. It’s just too stressful and taxing on the body. “Despite all the hardship and health problems, I love my job and I am thankful to people for the love and respect they have showered on me” he says, “When the time comes, I want to die playing a statue.”

1. Why could Abdul get the strange job given by his boss?
A.He had his special ambition.B.He was most familiar with the job.
C.He knew the boss more than others.D.He stood out among the group.
2. What does Abdul do when he is free?
A.He eats a lot of snacks.B.He tries his best to move around.
C.He cooks for his family.D.He practices yoga for 12 hours a day.
3. How does Abdul feel about his job according to the text?
A.It’s satisfying.B.It’s overpaid.C.It’s boring.D.It’s instructive.

9 . If you are thinking about asking for a raise in salary, there are several things to keep in mind. First, consider whether you deserve a higher salary.     1     Sit down and make a list of your job accomplishments. Be as specific as possible. For example, think about important projects you have worked on, things you have done to improve the organization of work in your department, or how your efforts have brought more money to the company. Also include any professional development opportunities you have taken advantage of recently and be ready to explain how they have improved your performance on the job.       2       Bear in mind that salary levels are based not only on performance but also on the market for your particular skills. Before you ask for a raise, you need to do some research. You should investigate the industry standards for salaries for people in similar positions with similar levels of experience.     3     Your initial request should actually be slightly higher than the amount you want in order to leave some room for negotiation. Then, if you have to go lower than this amount, you still end up with something close to what you want.

4     If you have recently been given new responsibilities, it makes sense to ask for a higher level of compensation. On the other hand, if the company is going through financial difficulties, a request for more money will probably not be met with a favorable response. It would be better to wait until the company is in a better financial position. Finally, never give personal reasons for wanting a higher salary. Your need to pay your child's college tuition or buy a bigger house is of no concern to your boss.     5     That is where you need to keep the conversation.

A.This will help you determine what would be a reasonable amount of money to ask for.
B.Skills play a key role in your salary level.
C.A crucial point is the timing of your request.
D.Everyone is eager for a raise in salary.
E.You probably do, but you should be able to explain exactly why to your boss.
F.Your salary level should be based on professional considerations alone.
G.Then you will be better prepared when you meet with your boss.

10 . Though many people think of summer as a time to slow down and enjoy a vacation, it can also be the perfect time to make money or get experience. Here are some good summer jobs for you.

Survey-taking

Survey-taking is a way to make money during your summer holiday, especially if you live in an area that doesn’t have many chances. With a computer or smartphone, you can sit on your sofa and search for survey sites such as Surveys On The Go, InboxDollars or Swagbucks. Without much effort, you can start making money for your opinions. However, the ease of use comes with a low earning potential.

Food Delivery(递送)

If you enjoy driving, you can use your car to deliver food. You can sign up to deliver food from restaurants with services such as Uber Eats, DoorDash and Grubhub. Another choice is delivering daily used goods with services such as Postmates, Shipt and Instacart. The earning potential for delivery can be higher than for other jobs because customers often give tips. The disadvantage is that these jobs require you to put in more time.

Photo Applications

If you go to the mall, you can use an app such as Field Agent or Gigwalk to make money by taking pictures of products in stores. See any help-wanted signs in the store windows? Take a picture and get paid for each one you find.

House Sitting and Pet Care

Summer is a time when people take vacations and may need someone to look after their homes or pets. Services such as HouseSitter and MindMyHouse connect homeowners with proper house sitters(看房人). For animal lovers who would rather care for someone’s pet while they are away, you can turn to services like Rover.

1. What do we know about making money through Survey-Taking?
