1 . I believe honesty is one of the greatest gifts there is. I know they call it a lot of fancy names these days. But it doesn't make any difference what they call it; it's still what makes a man a good citizen. This is my code, and I try to live by.

I've been in the taxi business for thirty﹣five years, and I know there is a lot about it that is not so good. Taxi drivers have to be rough fellows. You've got to be tough to fight the New York traffic eight hours a day, these days. Because taxi drivers are tough, people get the wrong impression that they are bad. Taxi drivers are just like other people. Most of them will shake down as honest fellows. You read in the Papers almost every week where a taxi driver turns in money or jewels or bonds, stuff like that people leave in their cabs. If they weren't honest, you wouldn't be reading those stories in the papers.

One time in Brooklyn, I found a diamond ring in my cab. I remembered helping a lady with a lot of stuff that day, so I went back to where I had dropped her off. It took me almost two days to trace her down in order to return her ring to her. I didn't get as much as "thank you." Still, I felt good because I had done what was right. I think I felt better than she did.

I was born and raised in Ireland and lived there until I was nineteen years old. I came to this country in 1913 where I held several jobs to earn a few dollars before being a soldier in World War I. After the war, I bought my own cab and have owned one ever since. It hasn't been too easy at times, but my wife takes care of our money and we have a good bit put away for a rainy day.

People ask me about tips. As far as I know, practically everyone will give you something. Come to think of it, most Americans are pretty generous. I always try to be nice to everyone, whether they tip or not. I believe in God and try to be a good member of my parish (教区). I try to act toward others like I think God wants me to act. I have been trying this for a long time, and the longer I try, the easier it gets.

1. What does the writer really want to express in the first paragraph?
A.Honesty is called a lot of fancy names.
B.Honesty is more important than anything else.
C.Honesty brings him whatever he wants in life.
D.All people think he is honest whatever he does.
2. The underlined words in Paragraph Two can be best replaced by
A.pretend to be
B.try to learn from
C.prove to be
D.have to be
3. The writer mentioned the experience of returning the ring in order to
A.show most drivers are honest
B.show most passengers are forgetful
C.show the lady was too impolite
D.show taxi drivers live a hard life
4. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?
A.Honesty and its fancy names
B.How to be an honest driver
C.Honesty, a must for a taxi driver
D.Honesty makes me happy

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了Margaret为了照顾孩子而辞去了护士的工作,去做了清洁工。并介绍了她的新工作情况和其他人对她的看法。
2 . Margaret, married with two small children, has been working for the last seven years as a night cleaner, cleaning offices in a big building.
She trained as a nurse, but had to give it up when her elder child became seriously ill. “I would have liked to go back to it, but the shifts (工作班次) are all wrong for me, as I have to be home to get the children up and off to school.”
So she works as a cleaner instead, from 9 a.m. till 6 a.m. five nights a week for just £90, before tax and insurance. “It’s better than it was last year, but I still think that people who work ‘unsocial hours’ should get a bit extra.”
The hours she’ s chosen to work meant that she sees plenty of the children, but very little of her husband. However, she doesn’t think that puts any pressure on their relationship.
Her work isn’t physically very hard, but it’s not exactly pleasant, either. “I do get angry with people who leave their offices like a place for raising pigs. If they realized people like me have to do it, perhaps they’d be a bit more careful.”
The fact that she’s working all night doesn’t worry Margaret at all. Unlike some dark buildings at night, the building where she works is fully lit, and the women work in groups of three. “Since I’ve got to be here, I try to enjoy myself——and I usually do, because of the other girls. We all have a good laugh, so the time never drags.”
Another challenge Margaret has to face is the reaction of other people when she tells them what she does for a living. “They think you’re a cleaner because you don’t know how to read and write,” said Margaret. “I used to think what my parents would say if they knew what I’d been doing, but I don’t think that way any more. I don’t dislike the work though I can’t say I’m mad about it.”
1. Margaret quit her job as a nurse because _______
A.she wanted to earn more money to support her family
B.she had suffered a lot of mental pressure
C.she needed the right time to look after her children
D.she felt tired of taking care of patients
2. Margaret gets angry with people who work in the office because Margaret feels_______.
A.they never clean their offices
B.they look down upon cleaners
C.they never do their work carefully
D.they always make a mess in their offices
3. When at work, Margaret feels _______.
A.light-hearted because of her fellow workers
B.happy because the building is fully lit
C.tired because of the heavy workload
D.bored because time passed slowly
4. The underlined part in the last paragraph implies that Margaret’s parents would _______.
A.help care for her children
B.regret what they had said
C.show sympathy for her
D.feel disappointed in her

3 . Job sharing refers to the situation in which two people divide the responsibility of one full-time job.The two people willingly act as part-time workers, enough hours between them to fulfill the duties of a full-time worker. If they each work half the job, for example, they each receive 50 per cent of the job's wages, its holidays and its other benefits.
Job sharing differs from conventional (常规的) part-time work in that it occurs mainly in the more highly skilled and professional areas, which require higher levels of responsibility and employee commitment.
Job sharing should not be confused with the term work sharing, which refers to increasing the number of jobs by reducing the number of hours of each existing job, thus offering more positions to the growing number of unemployed people.Job sharing, by contrast, is not designed to address unemployment problems; its focus, rather, is to provide well-paid work for skilled workers and professionals who want more free time for other activities.
As would be expected, most job sharers are women.A survey carried out in 1988 by Britain's Equal Opportunities Commission showed that 78 per cent of sharers were female, the majority of whom were between 20 and 40 years of age.Subsequent studies have come up with similar results. Many of these women were re-entering the job market after having had children, but they chose not to seek part-time work because it would have meant lower status.Job sharing also offered an acceptable shift back into full-time work after a long absence.
The necessity of close cooperation when sharing a job with another person makes the actual work quite different from conventional one-position jobs. However, to ensure a greater chance that the partnership will succeed, each person needs to know the strengths, weaknesses and preferences of his or her partner before applying for a position. Moreover, there must be a fair division of both routine tasks and interesting ones.In sum, for a position to be job-shared well, the two individuals must be well matched and must treat each other as equals.
1. In what way is work sharing different from job sharing?
A.Work sharing requires more working hours.
B.Work sharing is aimed at creating more jobs.
C.Work sharing provides a more satisfactory salary.
D.Work sharing depends on the employer's decision.
2. According to Paragraph 4, young mothers preferred job sharing to conventional part-time work mainly because ________.
A.they sought higher social status
B.they were over ideal working ages
C.they had difficulty finding full-time jobs
D.they had to take care of both work and family
3. In job sharing the partners should ________.
A.enjoy equal social status
B.have similar work experience
C.keep in touch with each other
D.know each other very well
4. The main purpose of the passage is to ________.
A.describe job sharing in general
B.discuss how to provide more jobs
C.recommend job sharing to women
D.compare job sharing with work sharing

4 . Should universities focus on training workers for the next decade or curing diseases for the next century? A group of governors, educators, and CEOs weighed in on the best way universities can prepare for the future. They debated how the U.S. can take the responsibility for research while still preparing students for real jobs.

Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin said that the first thing she thinks about as governor is educating Oklahoma students and strengthening the workforce. So she’s carrying out a program called “America Works: Education and Training for Tomorrow’s Jobs” that aims to “reorganize our education system with the current needs of our employers”.

The state governor added that this new educational approach doesn’t just benefit students and companies, but also improves the state economy. “We’ve been able to attract new companies to our state because of what we’re doing with our universities, because our students are a pipeline for the workforce,” she said, “General Electric Company (one of the world’s biggest companies) is coming to Oklahoma.”

Other group members were more focused on the long-term goals of a research university. Amy Gutmann pointed out that “basic research is the foundation for everything else that happens at a university. And if we don’t do it, nobody else will.”

“And if nobody does that research, we’ll pay the price in health care bills,” argued Vagelos, who is a former CEO of Merck & Co., Inc, one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. And a specific drug for a cold is reported to be produced by the company. “The jobs of universities are basic research, which is what is needed for attacks on disease,” he said. “There has been a reduction in coronary heart disease (冠心病) by 60% in the last forty years because of this research, and that reduces health care costs.”

James Hunt, former North Carolina governor, argued for a happy medium. Effective communication, he said, would help the public see that the research conducted at universities actually serves a practical purpose.

Eli Broad, founder of the Broad Foundations, agreed. “We have to show the public what research has achieved,” he said, “We have to show how it actually goes from basic research to something they can understand.”

8 . Should Schoolchildren Have Jobs?

When you were in school, the last thing you probably wanted to do was spend your weekends going to work. There was homework to do, sports to play and fun to have. But our parents probably persuaded us to find a job to earn some money and get some life experience. When I was a teenager I had a paper round. I then progressed to a Saturday job in a supermarket.

Today in the UK children are allowed to take part-time jobs from the age of 13. It’s one of those things that is seen almost as a rite of passage(成人仪式). It’s a taste of independence. Teenagers agree that it teaches valuable lessons about working with adults and also about managing your money.

Some research has shown that not taking on a Saturday or holiday jab could be harmful to a person later on. According to a 2017 study in the UK, employers’ organizations believed that not participating in part-time work at school age caused young adults to be ill-prepared for full-time employment. But despite this, recent numbers have shown that the number of schoolchildren in the UK with a part-time job has fallen by a fifth in the past five years.

So, does this mean that British teenagers are now more afraid of hard work? Probably not. Some experts think that young people feel going out to work will affect their performance at school, and they are under more pressure now to study hard and get good exam results—and a good job in the long term. However, Geoff Barton, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, told BBC News that “Properly controlled part-time work is a good way of helping young people learn skills that they will need in their working lives.” In reality, it’s all about getting the right balance between doing part-time work and having enough time to study and rest.

Many young people actually want to work because it gives them a sense of freedom. One 13-year-old girl, who has a Saturday job in a shop, told the BBC that “I enjoy my job because I’m earning money and it helps my confidence speaking to people and socializing with people.” Did you do a part-time job when you were at school?

1. Employers believe if young adults don’t participate in part-time work at school age, ________.
A.they can’t work on their own
B.they can’t manage their money wisely
C.they won’t be well-prepared for the job
D.they won’t know how to work with others
2. According to some experts, ________ has caused fewer schoolchildren to do a par-time job in the past years.
A.more time to restB.having enough money
C.being afraid of hard workD.more pressure from school
3. According to the passage, taking on a part-time job can help young people ________.
A.have a chance to see the world and meet more friends
B.understand their parents and grow up more quickly
C.learn skills and be confident to talk to people
D.get better grades and perform well in school

9 . Perhaps at one point in time, it was acceptable to start any letter or e-mail with “To Whom It May Concern.”     1     Starting your cover letter or e-mail for a job this way might give off the impression that you didn’t do your research on who you’re writing to.     2     After all, people who address other people by their names when writing and speaking to them tend to be more pleasant.

3     It can be used in letters of recommendation or reference, formal complaints(抱怨)made to a company, letters of introduction, and letters of interest.

Grammarly uses the example of needing to write a letter of recommendation, for a colleague who will have to make several copies to distribute to interviewers,     4     “In most cases, though, try to narrow your focus rather than cast a broad net,” notes Grammarly.”Ask yourself. Who does this e-mail concern? If you can honestly answer ‘Anyone, ‘then feel free to use “To Whom It May Concern.” (These are the things you should never say in your cover letter.)

If you do happen to find that using “To Whom It May Concern” is appropriate, don’t make grammar mistakes, for example, letters or punctuation.     5

A.However, it maybe interesting.
B.Those times have changed, though.
C.Making mistakes in writing will surely get you low scores.
D.It’s also very impersonal, which some employers might not appreciate.
E.In that circumstance, sending and receiving letters is more of a formal greeting.
F.You might want to take note of other common errors you might be committing, too.
G.But according to Grammarly, there are four times when it’s OK to use this greeting.
