The United Nations, known as UN, is an intergovernmental organization whose stated purposes are     1    (keep) international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations, achieve international cooperation,     2    be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations. It was founded in 1945 and    3    (have) about 193 member states now. This is the reason why the UN has a huge number of translators and interpreters, since international meetings in the UN are attended by people who speak so many different languages. Translators are people who usually work with written language, while interpreters work with spoken language. Meetings     4    only two languages are used may need only one interpreter, while a bit    5    (large) events where leaders from many countries gather may need over 70 interpreters.

There are two main ways that an interpreter can provide spoken translation. First is the method which requires the speaker to stop every few sentences, so the interpreter can translate    6    (that) sentences for the audience. The second method is    7    one in which the interpreter listens and translates at the same time. This second method is more difficult, but the place where the interpreter     8    (locate) is not so important. The interpreter can be in a     9    (complete) different location from the speaker, listen through headphones, and translate for an audience     10    (sit) in another location!

Kyrgyzstan(吉尔吉斯斯坦) is a mountainous country where nearly two thirds of the people live in rural areas. The UN notes that the local economy depends     1    (heavy)on farming. So it is rare for any Kyrgyz to choose technology     2     a career path.

The UN Development Programme studied records about the country’s college     3    (graduate)in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, construction and manufacturing. It found that women make up less than 10 percent of those graduates.

Nineteen-year-old Alina Anisimova,     4     is a computer programmer, says some girls don’t have the courage to take on such studies because it is not common in their country. And, she also says a majority of parents discourage their daughters from     5    (study)these subjects. Girls in her country are expected     6     (marry) instead of having careers. Nearly one in 10 girls in Kyrgyzstan is married before the age of 18, notes the international aid group Girls Not Brides. She wishes that in the future people will not consider it so     7    (surprise)to see young women get involved in engineering and metal working.

Actually, the number of women in science, technology, engineering and math areas     8     (increase)in recent years. For example, in the US, there has been a push to get more girls interested in such subjects at     9     early age. Still, the UN’s cultural agency UNESCO notes that only about 30 percent of the world’s researchers     10     (be)women.

Today，it is not rare that people may lose their jobs，so it is perhaps the time to consider the experience of unemployment. What are the first feelings？ Well，    1     （lose）a job，or not being able to find one，almost always causes sadness.

It's nice to be able to lie in bed in the morning，spend more time    7     your family and relatives，and have more time to think. It can be a chance for a fresh start. You can use the time to consider    8     you really want to get from life and how you can get it. Also you can use the time to plan how to find     9     new job，learn a new skill，or see if you can run your own business and become a success.     10    （possible），a new and better job is already waiting for you.

I started working as a volunteer for the City of Surrey this summer. I did this because I've always enjoyed     1     (help) people in any way I can. I thought if I became a volunteer for the City of Surrey, I would be able to achieve that goal. And being a volunteer for the City of Surrey     2     (real) helped me branch out in many different directions. I volunteered over 256 hours of     3     (serve) during the summer helping with day camps, teen dances and so on.

I worked hard and did my best to show everyone that this is     4     I love to do. I started by taking every course     5     (offer) through the volunteer program and then began to apply for paid positions. By the end of the summer I     6     (hire) as a dance instructor. Working for the City of Surrey has provided me with so many opportunities     7     would not have presented them-selves anywhere else.
