It was pretty sunny last Monday. I, together with some of our foreign friends cycled to the Great Wall. After about one hour cycling, the splendid construction appeared in the front of us. “Our efforts pay back!”, Lily shouted excitedly. The Great Wall, where looks like a huge dragon, lies silently on the historical land. Regard as the symbol of China, it was one of the ten architecture miracles in the world. Delightedly and thrilled, we walked upwards, felt the incredible intelligence of ancient Chinese architects and labors. So enjoyable was the journey we didn't go back until it was too late in the evening.

My family used to live in London. But then a few years ago my father got transferred (调动) and we came to a small town in Scotland. Everything was new here. The neighborhood, and the school.

I was not liking it much here. At this new school, nobody knew me. As I was shy, I had difficulty making friends and felt lonely all the time.

One day, when I was sitting in my seat, a girl came to me and introduced herself. It was Vivian. She smiled at me and asked if I wanted to have lunch with her. That day, we spent a great time together. Slowly, we became best friends.

In the coming month of October, it was my best friend’s birthday. I and other classmates in the school had planned a day out for her.

We all decided to take her to a nearby picnic spot (地点) in the afternoon and give her a surprise party. Everybody contributed a little to the cake and snacks. After school, we took her to the picnic spot. She cut the cake and we all enjoyed the snacks. After everybody had eaten, we all decided to enjoy the boat ride.

It was a pleasant day. The lake was small but beautiful. We were all singing together and cheering up. In the clear blue water of the lake, we could see the colorful fishes swimming rapidly. There were also ducks adding to the beauty of the scene (风景).

Everybody started clapping looking at those pretty birds. Vivian also became quite excited. Just when she was trying to touch the ducks, she lost her balance. Before anyone could do anything, she fell into the lake.

Everyone was shocked to see this. Without losing a minute, I jumped into the water. Nobody knew but I had learned to swim in my previous school.

One day when we were playing the basketball, I saw Tim wearing a pair sneaker of my style. I thought they were my shoes, so I shouted angry and blamed him for using my personal possessions without permit. Then I went back to the dorm after he could say anything. I opened the door only to find mine own sneakers just under my bed. For a while, I stood there still, shocking and guilty. When realizing my act must have hurt him, immediately I rush to the court to apology to him sincerely. Fortunately, though he was angry and sad, he pardoned me. With my relief, the conflict ended happily.

6 . Who are your friends? Are they all similar in age to you?     1     But you can widen your social circle and gain life-enriching benefits by becoming friends with someone younger or older than you. Having friends of different ages can greatly improve the quality of your life.

Having older friends can change your attitude towards life because they have already gone through the challenges you are facing. They have been young parents, have survived a job loss, and can help you get through these changes in your own life.     2     Then you’ll feel more ready for what’s coming in future stages.

When older people make friends with younger people, they get to share their experiences which can be very rewarding.     3     Giving your wisdom and attention makes you feel better. It gives you meaning and is good for your mental health. Having younger friends can also make you feel younger by including new ideas and energy in your life.

4     While making new friends may seem frightening, it’s actually easier than you think. You can first think about your acquaintances or coworkers and see if any of them share your values and interests and would make a good friend. Then see if you can make a coffee date. Besides, you can consider joining in a class that your coworker or acquaintance participates in that you think you will enjoy.     5

All in all making friends with people not your age can open your eyes to new ideas and new experiences that can be life-changing.

A.For human beings, giving is good.
B.Where to find friends sharing a common interest?
C.Then how can you make intergenerational friends?
D.Having friends at your own age is natural, of course.
E.What’s more, younger friends can give you some fresh ideas.
F.It’s believed that joining in activities like volunteering is also an effective way.
G.An older friend also helps you “try on” certain life experiences before you get there.

Emma had two exams that day — physics and history. She really hated physics. It was her worst subject. Alice looked at her, and then looked away quickly. Emma thought Alice looked pleased, because she didn’t have a problem with physics, she didn’t have a problem with anything...Miss Perfect!

“I thought we were friends, but she hasn’t spoken to me for two weeks now. she promised to help me go over for the physics exam too, but then she’s forgotten all my calls and texts. And when I rang her house, her mum just told me she was busy.” Emma thought angrily. At that moment, Mr. Read asked all the students into the exam room.

Emma couldn’t answer some physics questions. Suddenly she saw Alice sitting two rows in front of her. Emma couldn’t believe it! Alice was holding her phone on her knee under the table and reading from it. Is that how Alice always got such good grades? She felt really angry at Alice, and thought about telling the teacher, but...“Stop writing,” said Mr. Read and started to collect the exam papers. Oh no, Emma hadn’t answered two of the questions. She was going to fail again!

Emma wanted to talk to Alice at lunchtime, but she couldn’t find her anywhere. Emma went to the library to prepare for the history exam, which was her favorite. But she couldn’t concentrate. “Unfair! Alice was getting good grades by cheating all that time.” She thought about telling a teacher, but everyone would hate her if she did that. Just then, Mr. Read walked past her table. “Mr. Read...”

Emma was sitting behind Alice again in the history exam that afternoon. Mr. Read wanted her to look at Alice and agreed if she saw that Alice was cheating in the exam.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述的是作者的故事,作者曾经因为害怕不能融入其他人而选择取笑自己的一个朋友,幸亏作者最终意识到自己的错误,及时道歉,挽回了这个好朋友。

9 . One Thursday afternoon, when I was in Grade 9, a new boy came into my classroom. He was short and thin. He walked up to the teacher and told her, very seriously, that he was new. His name was Christian. He sat down, took a look at me, and then looked away. I didn’t think he was very nice and I was sure he wasn’t the type I would like to make friends with.

During that year, I didn’t talk to him much, but he smiled at me when our eyes met, always shyly. He never ate lunch with anybody, and he never talked to anybody but me.

But one day I joined those unkind kids who were making fun of him. We made fun of him though I thought it was wrong.

“Haven’t you got any friends?” a kid asked Christian, who had walked past us alone, with his head down.

“No, he hasn’t got any friends. He’s too stupid and shy” I said. Then Christian looked up at me with the saddest dog eyes I had ever seen. I felt very sorry at that moment.

That night, I couldn’t sleep because I couldn’t get Christian’s face out of my mind. In the weeks that followed, he never met my eyes in class and never smiled at me. It was really hard for me to decide to write him a note asking him to forgive(原谅) me. But I thought I should.

The next day in class, I wrote him a note telling him how sorry I felt. About five minutes later, I turned and saw tears in his eyes. “You will never realize what your apology(道歉) has meant to me, Jimmy” he said to me. “I hope we can become friends.”

We had lunch together that noon and we had the best talk I had ever had. Over the years at high school, we were close friends.

When I think back, I realize that, if I had not apologized, I would never have known what a lovely person Christian was.

Apologies can really change your life, so never miss the chance to tell somebody you are sorry.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

How far would you go to help a friend? Jeremy Savage, aged 17, and Ian Marshall, aged 16, both from Canada, had their friendship tested to the limit on a recent trip to the Rocky Mountains with their parents.

On Saturday morning, the two boys decided to climb Cathedral Mountain by themselves while their parents relaxed at the campsite. After three hours, they reached the top and enjoyed the beautiful view from the mountaintop.

However, trouble began when they started the climb down. On one very dangerous part of the mountain, Ian fell three meters off the side of the path. Jeremy climbed down to where Ian was and found him badly injured and not able to move then. Jeremy had to decide what to do. He needed help but he did not want to leave his friend. He cleaned the dirt and blood from Ian’s face and hands, and then tried to help Ian stand up, but Ian’s right leg was hurting too much. With incredible calmness and his former experience in the mountain, Jeremy then gave Ian his food and water and let him lie on his jacket. They had to wait and hope that help would come. While they waited for help, Jeremy used his jacket and an extra shirt to keep Ian warm and they rested together. Sensing his friend’s pain and anxiety, Jeremy gently comforted him and gave him constant encouragement in a determined tone.

Meanwhile, as darkness started to fall, their parents back at the campsite became very worried that the boys had not returned. Desperate tears welling up in the eyes, the mothers frantically prayed to God for their sons’ safety. They got in touch with park workers and began searching for the boys. Soon more than 20 people were looking for them on Cathedral Mountain.
