1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was angry about my father in the first year of college, because he didn’t care about my feelings all.

One day I had a serious quarrel with him. I was fed up with his direction and correction. How could he interfere with my life and my study plans? How could he understand the importance of my university activities? The only thing that he cared about was my academic performance! He didn’t understand my world and I didn’t understand his, either.

I stormed out and sighed all the way to school. Suddenly I realized that I didn’t have the assignment that was due: a thought card. This class was taught by Dr. Sidney B. Simon. The thought card was the admission ticket to his class. He would return them to us with his comment.

My first thought card read, “All that glitters(发光) is not gold.” He commented, “What does this quote mean to you? Is it significant?” Obviously, he was taking it seriously. I surely didn’t want to reveal myself to him.

The week progressed. Dr. Simon’s class was quite brilliant. He challenged us to think and come up with our own responses. But I had no handling strategies to deal with it.

The second Tuesday came. I wrote on my card, “The most important thing in communication is to hear what isn’t being said.” The next day the card came back: “You seem to need a listener. Is this important to your life?” I couldn’t remember a teacher caring personally about me since primary school.

With all these memories filling my mind, I raced to class. Just outside the door, I took a card and wrote, “I have the most terrible Dad of the world!” Then I dashed in. Looking up at me, he reached out for the card, and I took my seat. The moment I sat down, I felt terrible. I didn’t mean to let that out. That night I had difficiulty sleeping. What if he contacted my dad?

文章大意:这是一则新闻报道。这篇文章主要讲了Keith McDermott急切地想帮助96岁的母亲再次说母语,于是他在社交媒体上发出了呼吁,并得到了大量善意的回应。

2 . Desperate to help his 96-year-old mother to speak her mother tongue again, Keith McDermott made an appeal on social media and was met with a flood of kind responses. The old lady, Ray, was moved to tears after talking on the phone with one of the enthusiastic respondents in Welsh.

Ray moved to America after meeting her husband when she was only 18, hence waving goodbye to her life in Wales. She continued to speak Welsh with her mum-keeping a little bit of home. But she lost her beloved mum four decades ago and hadn't spoken Welsh ever since.

Despite suffering from short-term memory loss and sometimes not remembering what she has done recently, Ray's childhood memories in Wales remain clear. “She wants to return but I know, given her age, such long-distance travel is out of the question.” said Keith, “Once she mentioned ‘I wish I could speak Welsh again but I suppose I never will.’ It was then that I thought I should make her wish happen.”

So Keith, 70, posted on social media in the New York Welsh area asking for any Welsh speakers that could speak Welsh with his mum. And he was touched, as well as a little shocked, to receive over 30 responses within half an hour. Keith thanked everyone and eventually asked Melisa to give his mum a phone call. “Speaking with Melisa, her (Ray's) Welsh was a little rusty. A few more Welsh conversations and I think she'd be fluent again,” added Keith.

“When you have a parent in their nineties, you will find you two have something in common: you're both old, so I am very sympathetic to my mother's feelings of loneliness and isolation (孤立). I'm feeling it myself.” Keith hopes to set up more Welsh phone conversations for his mum and Melisa has promised to send Ray some short stories in Welsh to remind her of her life in Wales.

1. Why did Keith post a message on social media?
A.To gather American Welsh speakers.
B.To help his mum speak Welsh again.
C.To slow down his mum's memory loss.
D.To track down his family's Welsh origin.
2. How did Keith feel after seeing the responses?
A.Surprised and moved.B.Concerned and thankful.
C.Sympathetic and excited.D.Astonished and isolated.
3. What is conveyed in the story?
A.Social media contribute to closer family ties.
B.Mother tongue means more than a language.
C.Childhood experiences shape one's later life.
D.One will be more sensitive when getting older.
4. Where is the text probably taken from?
A.A community noticeboard.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了早起的益处,如提高认知能力、改善睡眠质量和有更充足的时间吃早餐等。

3 . •While people don’t always like the old saying “the early bird gets the worm”, getting up early is actually the secret to the success of many people.     1     There are also other benefits of waking up early in the morning.

•Improve your cognitive (认知的) function. People who get up early in the morning can concentrate better, are more attentive, and stay energetic throughout the day. Since people’s brains are more active in the morning, focusing on important tasks earlier will allow you to make better decisions than people who work later. Morning people have better problem- solving skills.     2

•Help you sleep better. Waking up early makes going to bed early easier and helps you get consistent sleep and wake times.     3     Getting enough sleep may lower your blood pressure and improve brain function. However, people who tend to be night owls are more likely to feel tired and develop sleep disorders.

•Give you more time to eat breakfast.     4     After all, food is the fuel people need to feel energetic and ready to face the world. Just grabbing a coffee and a piece of bread at the drive- through will not give you what you need. Enjoy a nutritious breakfast of Greek yogurt and fruit to start your day off right.

5     Are you too tired or too busy to work out at the end of the day? Try going to the gym or for a run first thing in the morning. A morning workout can change your mood, lower stress, reduce anxiety, and increase your energy levels.

When the last customer left KFC, it was already 10:30 pm. Adam, an 18-year-old college student, dragged himself home. He had been working at KFC for over a month that summer vacation.

Entering his room, Adam found his younger brother Bill sitting on the edge of his bed with an uneasy expression on his face.

“Sorry, Adam. I … I did something wrong,” Bill sprang up and said nervously.

“What is it?”

“This afternoon I sneaked (溜) out for a ride on your motorcycle and accidentally hit our neighbor Osman Brook’s car. I was so scared and I … I hurried home in panic.”

“Is the car seriously damaged?”

“The left headlight got broken.”

“It’s truly your fault and it’s really dangerous to ride a motorcycle at your age. Besides, it’s illegal,” Adam raised his voice, obviously annoyed. Hearing this, Bill lowered his head and bit his lips hard.

“Anyway, it’s no use crying over spilt milk. I will deal with it tomorrow. Now you go to bed and have a good sleep.”

The next morning when Adam got up, Bill was still sleeping soundly. Adam was more determined about what he ought to do as an elder brother.

After breakfast, Adam took out all the money he had earned and went out of the house with it. In the yard he saw his motorcycle, on whose side the scratches (划痕) were clearly visible. Adam shook his head and sighed slightly. Then he squared his shoulders and quickened his pace to Osman’s house.

When he arrived, he was welcomed by Osman’s wife Mary, who told him that Osman had gone to the garage to have his car repaired.

“I have something important to tell him. Can I wait until he comes back?” Adam requested eagerly.

“Of course. He should be home soon,” Mary invited Adam in, served him a cup of coffee and began chatting with him.

After half an hour, the door opened and in came Osman. Having said hello to each other, Osman and Adam both sat down on the sofa.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了作者心目中的绿洲Dan’s Depot面临即将倒闭的风险,作者建议换一种方式来经营这个事业。文章告诉我们:每一个结束都是一个新的开始。

5 . It was late on a Thursday evening in Austin, Texas, and I had just finished my shift downtown waiting tables. I hopped into my truck and headed away from the chaos to my own personal oasis, Dan’s Depot. It was on a four-lane road that went straight from the heart of Austin to West Texas. Once, Dan’s Depot had been outside of the city. But with Austin’s population growing and the city’s expansion, it was swallowed up by high-rise buildings and skyscrapers.

I’ve been familiar with Dan’s Depot since I played my first show there. Like most waiters in Austin, I’m actually a musician. The woman who welcomes customers is Dan’s wife Maude.

I slid my truck into the last free spot and headed to the door. “How’s it going, Maude?” I asked.

“David, I just don’t know what we’re going to do,” she said. “Our contract with the landlord is up for renewal at the end of the month, and he has doubled the rent. Even if we charged twice as much for the snacks and shows, we could never make ends meet.”

My heart dropped. On some level, I’d been expecting to hear this news for as long as I’d been coming to Dan’s Depot. After all, Dan’s Depot was now sandwiched between a shop selling yoga pants to people who could afford personal trainers and a luxury furniture store where even a simple dining chair cost more than $1,000. How could this little live music joint survive with those kinds of neighbors?

“What are you going to do with this place? Are you moving?” I asked.

She shook her head slowly. “I just don’t know. Dan and I are not as young as we used to be.”

I patted her on the shoulder and made my way to the tables near the stage. Memories sprung up in my mind. Most of my musical ideas came to me while I was watching live shows here at Dan’s Depot. When the song ended, I got up and went back to Maude.

“How about I run the new Dan’s Depot?” I asked her. She stared at me, surprised.

“Hear me out,” I said. “I’ve got enough money to go in with you and Dan as a third partner. I know the Texas music scene in and out, and I can get the best new bands in here every week. We’ll move it way down South Congress Avenue, where it’s still close enough to be accessible from downtown but the rent is more affordable. And most importantly, this place means a lot to me.”

Maude was still staring at me silently. I began to grow uneasy. Had I offended her? I started apologizing. She cut me off with a huge embrace. “Honey, I think that’s a fantastic idea.”

6 . A letter written to a 12-year-old girl in Lithuania was delivered in December, almost 51 years after it was sent by a pen pal in Poland. “I thought that someone was pranking me,” said Genovefa Klonovska after being handed the letter, which included a handmade colored rose and two paper dolls.

The letter, together with 17 others, fell out of a ventilation hole (通风口) this summer, dirty and wrinkled, as a wall was taken down in a former post office on the suburb of Vilnius. Jurgis Vilnius, owner of the building immediately called the post office. “I’m so happy they got interested,” said he.

Street names and their numbering have changed in Vilnius, and post office workers spent months looking for the right houses and talking to current renters and neighbors, tracking down where the recipients moved to. Only five were found. In several cases children of late recipients were handed a lost letter.

“We felt a moral duty to do this,” said Deimante Zebrauskaite, head of the customer experience department at Lithuania Post.

One lady compared the experience to receiving a message from a bottle thrown into sea. People were emotional. “Some felt they saw a part of daily life of their deceased parents,” Zebrauskaite said.

In the letter to Klonovska, sent from Koezary in Poland and stamped in 1970, a girl named Ewa complains buses no longer reach her village, so she has to walk in minus 23 degree Celsius cold, and asks for pictures of actors.

Now in her 60s, Klonovska has no memory of Ewa. She probably wrote Ewa after finding her address advertising for pen pals in a newspaper, and the relationship ceased after the letter got undelivered.

“So good that the letter didn't matter much. The loss was not life-changing,” said Klonovska “What if they delivered a lost letter from a suitor (求婚者) to his love, and their wedding never happened?”

1. What does the underlined word “pranking” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Brightening.B.Embarrassing.C.Tricking.D.Pleasing.
2. What happened to the letters in Paragraph 2?
A.They were accidentally found.
B.They remained well-preserved.
C.They were delivered by the former post office.
D.They were hidden by the owner of the building.
3. Which of the following best describes the present post office in Vilnius?
A.Generous.B.Dutiful.C.Honest.D.Cautious.
4. What can we learn from what Klonovska said?
A.Klonovska refused a suitor.
B.Klonovska stopped the wedding.
C.The undelivered letter ruined the relationship.
D.The undelivered letter made little difference to her.

7 . 2012 was one of the hardest years I have ever known because I lost my husband. For sea-eras months, I found it hard to write, think, eat or take pleasure in anything; I could not imagine what it would be like to feel happy again; I could not find any hope or purpose.

I cannot remember the reason why one Monday morning I decided to go to a hot yoga studio in east London, where I signed up for a 3 O-day trial. I do not remember the class or how much I sweated. What I do know is that I started going to hot yoga every day, Sometimes, when my head felt as if it might collapse (崩溃), I went twice a day. I skipped parties, left social events and got up early to attend. There was something about the hot room that held me together, stopping all the dark thoughts inside my mind.

I chose the Bikram method of hot yoga: It has a set of 26 postured and two breathing exercises performed in heat over a period of 90 minutes. This form of yoga was founded by Bikram Choudhury. In 2015, he failed in an attempt to copyright (取得版权) his method. Many practitioners (从业人员) believe that Bikram is not real yoga. Some question the limita-lions of just 26 postured. Others wonder why the class has to be performed before a wall of mirrors. However, something in those 26 postured freed my mind, dragged me out of my thoughts and back into the present. I was able to focus on how my body behaved differently each day.

A.She succeeded in writing.B.She tried to find hope again.
