3 . Be a Lifelong Learner

We live in a world that prizes education. But most people think of education only in terms of formal classes. When people graduate from high school or college, they usually think their education is complete. But it is possible to continue learning after finishing school.     1

On a personal level, learning can be fun. It can deepen your conversations by giving you something interesting to talk about. And it’s good for your brain. Hobbies that require thought can help you keep your mental abilities as you age. Just as exercise makes your muscles stronger, your mind becomes sharper when you use it.

Being a lifelong learner can also help your career. Becoming an expert in an area outside of your present job gives you freedom. It allows you to take a job in another field if you want to. Also, knowledge in other areas can help you develop creative ideas in your current job.

2     It starts with making a conscious decision to do so. You need to be determined to keep making the effort to learn when it isn’t easy. It may help to find friends who will encourage your learning. It might also help to set aside specific times to study.

Try finding time to learn throughout your day. Carry a book with you, and read when you have to wait. Audiobooks and podcasts are also helpful resources. You can listen to them while traveling or doing chores.

3     If you want to learn how to fix appliances, try fixing some at home. If you’re learning a foreign language, find someone who speaks that language to talk to. If you’re learning facts about economics or science, explain what you’re learning to someone else.     4

A.What does a lifelong learner look like?
B.So how do you become a lifelong learner?
C.Then you can help that person be a lifelong learner, too!
D.Finding ways to use what you learn can help you remember things.
E.Never stop discovering new things about the world around you.
F.And making the effort pays off personally and professionally.

4 . Just being intelligent (聪明的) doesn’t mean someone will be successful. And just because someone is less intelligent doesn’t mean that person will fail. That’s one take-home message from the work of people like Angela Duckworth, who works at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

Like many other scientists, Duckworth wondered what makes one person more successful than another. When digging deeper, Duckworth found that the people who performed best shared a quality independent of intelligence. They had what she now calls grit (毅力). Duckworth developed a set of questions to test it. She calls it her “grit scale (量表).”

In one study of people 25 and older, she found that as people age, they become more likely to stick with a project. She also found that git increases with education. People who finished college scored higher on the grit scale than people who quit before graduation. People who went to graduate school after college scored even higher.

She then did another study with college students. Duckworth wanted to see how intelligence and grit influenced performance in school. So she compared scores on college-entrance exams, which measure IQ, to school grades and scores on the grit scale. Students with higher grades tended to have more grit. That’s not surprising. Getting good grades takes both smarts and hard work.

But some people counter that this grit means success. Among those people is Marcus Crede, a professor at Iowa State University in Ames. He recently pooled the results of 88studies on grit. Together, those studies tested nearly 67, 000 people. And grit did not predict success, Crede found.

However, he thinks grit is very similar to someone’s ability to set goals, work toward them and think things through before acting.

“Study habits and skills, test anxiety and class attendance are far more strongly connected to school grades than grit,” Crede says. “We can teach students how to study well. We can help them with their test anxiety,” he adds. “I’m not sure we can do that with grit.”

1. What can we know from the first two paragraphs?
A.Intelligence determines success.B.Not all smart people will succeed.
C.Duckworth redesigned a grit scale.D.Grit decides how intelligent one might be.
2. What might influence a person’s grit according to Angela Duckworth’s findings?
A.Lifestyle.B.Family.C.PersonalityD.Education.
3. What does the underlined word “counter” in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Comment.B.Disagree.C.Recognize.D.Warn.
4. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Grit can hardly be taught.B.Grit can be improved eastly
C.Grit is strongly related to test anxiety.D.Grit has nothing to do with school grades.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍的是五步更好学习的费曼学习法。

7 . The Feynman Technique(费曼学习法)is a powerful method that you can use to learn anything faster because it forces you to actively think about the problem instead of passively reading or listening to someone else talk about it. You can take the following five simple steps to study better.

·Find out the topic you want to learn.     1     Otherwise, you'll end up jumping between topics without developing a deeper understanding of any of them.

·Explain the topic as if teaching a sixth-grader. This step is the heart of the FeynmanTechnique—    2    .This requires you to meet the child at their level of understanding by using the simplest way.

.Identify areas of improvement in your explanation. You’ll need to critically(批判性地)review the explanation you cane up with in Step Two     3    . Try to find any knowledge gaps, together with any areas where you felt that you couldn't explain the topic simply.

·Improve and optimiez(优化) your explanation. Think about all the knowledge gaps and other areas of improvement you found before.     4

· Repeat the steps until you’ve achieved mastery of the topic. Keep going through each step you're fully satisfied with your explanation.    5    , and that is why going through all the prior steps just once is usually not enough to achieve topic mastery.

A.Use those to improve your explanation
B.To do so, take a critical look at your explanation
C.Make sure that your explanation is interest-based
D.Your explanations need to be short and to the point
E.The Feynman Technique works best with a repeat
F.It’s important that you clearly know the topics you’re trying to learn
G.Explaining the topic simply enough to be understood by a sixth-grade student

文章大意:这是一篇议论文。文章主要论述的是教师应该教学生科学方法而不是简单地灌输科学知识。

8 . I’ve been giving lots of thought recently to the teaching of the science subject at schools. I’m wondering whether spending more time learning how we “do” science –– the scientific method –– is more valuable than simply making children memorize scientific “facts”.

After all, science isn’t a collection of facts about the world. That’s just called “knowledge”. Rather, science is a process of thinking and making sense of the world, which will then lead to new knowledge. We’ve often heard it said that we should be teaching children not what to think but how to think. However, schools now spend so much of the science subject loading up children’s brains with “knowledge”.

Surely, everyone needs a basic scientific understanding. We all need to know some science: facts about the world to help us make informed decisions about important issues that face us all in our everyday lives, from the risks of smoking to the benefits of exercising or why recycling our waste is good for the planet.

Yet what seems to be missing today is an understanding of the way we gain this scientific understanding of the world. Nowadays, social media has played a significant role in spreading information. However, many people use it as a medium for spreading disinformation or harmful opinions. But social media has only enlarged the societal problem that has been with us.

On top of this, our attention spans(时长)are naturally getting shorter, and we don’t take the time to question our views, or ask whether the information we are getting is reliable. This is where thinking scientifically can help. Adopting some of the ways that good science is practiced can help us to critically assess what we believe, question our own views before we attack views we don’t like, and so on.

This is exactly why we should be teaching more of scientific methods in schools. This remarkable way of seeing, thinking and knowing, is one of humankind’s great riches and the birthright of everyone. And, most wonderfully, it only grows in quality and value the more widely it is shared.

1. What is the author concerned about according to Paragraph 1?
A.The teaching topics of the science subject.B.Students’ interest in the science subject.
C.The teaching content of the science subject.D.The lack of emphasis on science in schools.
2. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.The application of science in daily lives.B.The understanding of science in daily lives.
C.The method of knowing scientific facts.D.Some scientific phenomena in daily lives.
3. What does the underlined part “the societal problem” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The spread of false information.B.The misunderstanding of science.
C.The popularity of social media.D.The negative impact of social media.
4. What can students get from learning scientific methods?
A.Improved attention in class.B.Growing interest in science.
C.The deeper understanding of science.D.The ability to think critically.
