文章大意:本文是新闻报道,韦恩州立大学举办了一种活动,旨在让孩子们了解科学、艺术和医疗保健系统。

1 . “Every child has a great curiosity about something they love,”said Carolyn King, a doctor in Grand Rapids, Michigan. King, who once studied at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, is the co-founder of a yearly event called Reach Out to Youth (ROTY).

Wayne State has held the event since 1989, which lets kids ages 7 to 11 experience science and medicine in an interesting way.

“We’re here to help distinguish future scientists and future physicians,” said Richard Baker, director of Medical Education at Wayne State.

Diamond Moore, a medical student and the leading organizer of ROTY planned a special but interesting day for attendees. Exhibits included a room where you could see a brain, heart, and some other parts of our body, and a room where you could test your reflexes (反射动作). Wayne State teachers and medical students, including Moore, shared their knowledge of medical science with kids.

“This program wants kids to learn about science, arts, and the health care system,” Moore said, so that hopefully, they’ll become interested in medicine.

Some of the students were excited about the chance to tour the exhibits and learn more about medicine-related jobs. “A doctor would be a cool job,” said first-time attendee Desiree Anders.

Jeremiah Tower, an 11-year-old from Detroit, said that learning about science and things about the body was what the program was all about. Still, he wasn’t excited about having to get up early on a Saturday morning.

This year’s theme was “Play It Safe: Brain Safety.” After seeing what a brain looks like up close, young attendees learned about the danger of concussions (脑震荡). A fun test was given about brain safety so that kids could see how much they had learned.

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章主要讲述perez hilton 在博客上报道的一个快闪活动。

2 . Have you ever dreamt of being among the people talked about on a celebrity blog? Well 140 junior high and high school students from Edmonton, Alberta don’t have to dream any longer. An inter-school project they worked on was so successful that Perez Hilton blogged about it, which is surprising since his blog is usually for celebrities. They did a flash mob (快闪) in a shopping center with the main message being “stand up to bullying”.

Over 140 students, aged from 12 to 17, participated in the anti-bullying flash mob, dancing to a well-known song called “Loser Like Me” “We actually had almost too many; we had to cut back on the number at each school,” said Kristina Solikowski, one organizer of the event.

“I was just really excited!” said Olivia Brassard, a grade seven student at RS Fowler School. Being one of the younger student dancers, Olivia couldn’t get over her nerves at the start. “I was a little shy because I had to interact with a lot of grade eights and nines, but after, I got more comfortable,” said Olivia.

The reason why Olivia got involved was partly for the fun of dancing but also because she really believed in the message that bullies are bad! “I thought it would be a good way to spread the word about the bullying that goes on in our society,” said Olivia.

Olivia’s friend Allison Wood, a grade eight student at St. Albert Catholic High School, got involved for the same reason as Olivia. “I don t think it’s going to be possible to stop bullying all together, but I think we can certainly decrease it,” explains Allison.

These students have set a good example for kids everywhere. There’s no better way to decrease something bad than by getting people together to do something good, right?

1. Why did Perez Hilton blog about the flash mob in Edmonton?
A.The event achieved great success.
B.He has a deep interest in flash mobs.
C.There were many famous people taking part.
D.He wanted to realize the students’ dream of becoming famous.
2. What did the students do at the flash mob?
A.They sang the song “Loser Like Me”.
B.They shouted out “stand up to bullying”.
C.They danced to the song “Loser Like Me”.
D.They gave out posters saying “stand up to bullying”.
3. How did Olivia feel at the beginning of the flash mob?
A.Comfortable.B.Helpless.C.Nervous.D.Excited.
4. What does the underlined part “got involved” mean in Paragraph 4?
A.Agreed with.B.Took part.C.Liked.D.Developed.
5. What is the main purpose of this text?
A.To report a flash mob.B.To introduce flash mobs.
C.To list the harm of bullying.D.To encourage readers to fight bullying.

3 . The lines to enter South Gate’s South East High School and South East Middle School at 9 a.m. Monday were each about 200 students deep.

Kony Aguillon sat in the shade while her son, an eighth-grader, waited for his health check in. She had done everything right Sunday night, pre-checking the district’s Daily Pass website so that it would be smooth going the next morning. But on Monday, the system wouldn’t load. They arrived at school early, around 7:50 a.m., to check in, and an hour later, there they stood. “I imagined it was going to be crazy,” she added, but not as bad as it was.

Opening day at the nation’s second-largest school district unfolded with a mix of emotions: frustration over long waits, anxiety over health protocols and concern for how things would go for children who have been learning online for a year and a half. But for many, the sense of joy and relief at being together again eased the worries.

In the early morning at John Marshall High, lines of students waiting to enter extended two blocks. By 9 a.m., some students were still waiting, having missed part of the first class.

In anticipation of delays, Gary Garcia had already extended the first period of classes by about 18 minutes in hopes that all students could meet their teachers.

Teachers and parents also expressed optimism.

“It’s exciting,” said Nohemi Sanchez-Heredia, who teaches first grade. Henriette Jeter was at the school with her daughters, who are starting kindergarten, second and fifth grades. Even though the Delta variant (德尔塔变异株) worries her, she felt her kids needed to be back in a classroom.

The most common emotions were in the largest type: “nervous” and “excited” mixed with somewhat “stressed”, “happy”, “tired” and “scared”.

1. Which of the following can generally best describe emotions outside the school gates?
A.Relaxed.B.Disordered.C.Scared.D.Excited.
2. What fact caused the check-in slow besides a bit too many students?
A.No preparation.B.Too many parents.
C.Poor loading system.D.Extension of the first period.
3. What’s the meaning of underlined word “protocols” in paragraph 3?
A.Benefits.B.Test reports.C.Problems.D.Physical strengths.
4. Who might be a schoolmaster?
A.Gary Garcia.B.Henriette Jeter.
C.Kony Aguillon.D.Nohemi Sanchez-Heredia.

4 . In early November of 1942, my geology class was supposed to go on a field trip to see the mica mine (云母矿). Although it rained, everyone showed up on time. I was the only girl in the class. We all fit into two cars.

Near Deary, Mr. Tier, our teacher, went into a store to ask about the direction, while townsmen looked at us with curiosity. On the store owner's advice, we drove out into the hills for a few miles. Then we left the cars. We were afraid they would get stuck in the mud.

Eventually, we located the mine near the top of the mountain. There was a very small hole, running about two or three hundred feet into the mountainside. The passage was so narrow that we could touch both sides with our hands, and not tall enough to allow us to stand up straight. The first boy held the torch; we took hold of the backs of each other's coats, in a line, and followed him in, ducking our heads. After getting in, we were disappointed because it was not the mine our teacher was looking for.

The rain was coming down hard as we started back to the cars to go home. Back at Deary, we went into a drugstore and stood around its big heating stove to dry out. The clerk was a middleaged lady. Seeing our entirely wet hair and clothes, she handed each of us a cup of hot water immediately and asked if there was anything wrong with any of us.

Hiking eight miles in the rain had not reduced our interest at all. We all felt we had had a wonderful time, even if we didn't find the mine.

1. Why did the class leave the cars halfway?
A.Because their cars broke down in Deary.
B.Because it was not easy to drive in the mud.
C.Because townsmen were curious about their cars.
D.Because the store owner gave them a wrong direction.
2. What does the underlined word "ducking" in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Turning.B.Touching.
C.Lowering.D.Hitting.
3. What can we know from the passage?
A.The author was not liked by her classmates.
B.The weather terribly influenced the trip.
C.The teacher was not professional enough.
D.The class failed to see the mica mine.
4. Where is the text most probably taken from ?
A.A personal blog.
B.A writing guide.
C.A science magazine.
D.A literary journal.

6 . I am a part of the Windward Robotics team known as the Omnicats, one of the many clubs offered at my school, My eight teammates and I started out by watching the robotics qualifiers (资格赛) and finals of Chinese teams. We used these robotics videos for inspiration and drew up mind maps of what our team wanted to do.

We meet every day for two hours after school in order to build our robots. Typically, adults oversee what students are building, but my school lets teens take control. It leaves room for more errors, but we’re prouder of our final product.

Before our first real match, a practice one was offered at the actual site. My sub-team had been further along than other teams but quickly fell behind,’ When that big day arrived, I immediately felt my teammates’ nervousness. Our first match was in three minutes. All of us glanced around at each other, anxious and nervous. Our robot was still sitting in a box. Two of our teammates rushed to take the robot for an official examination as the rest of us discussed our strategy.

Our team captain explained that we all should try driving the robot now, while it was early in the season. She gave me the remote. I had only driven for a limited amount of time in practice so I was extremely nervous. Our autonomous code (自动代码) began to run almost immediately after our short discussion. Despite all the drama, we ended up winning the match. Not too bad for the first match! I was so proud. I did not enjoy the pressure of driving but liked building the, robot behind the scenes instead.

We have transferred to a different type of robotics at the end of the season, which involves the whole team designing one giant robot with large tools. 8 . Hillside Secondary School year is divided into two 18-week semesters. Semester One runs from September to the end of January. Semester Two runs from February to late June.

The school day runs from 8:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. and is made up of five 78-minute periods. Students take four classes and have one period for lunch.

In February, 2000, the school introduced a new system of computerized attendance in order to provide accurate records of student lates and absences and to enable communication with parents.

Student evaluation is a continual process based upon class performance, tests, homework and reports, as well as special projects or formal examinations held at the end of the semester. There will be at least three reports to parents during each semester. After five weeks of class, students carry Early-bird Report home. The semester one Parent/Teacher interview date appears on this report. Mid-term Report is at the ninth week. Marks are then calculated. Mid-term Reports are prepared and mailed in mid November and late April. Students with marks under 60% after 11 weeks of class will receive an In-Danger Report to remind them that more effort is required as well as careful preparation for final exams. Those notices are mailed home. Final Reports are mailed home in February and July.

The Newsletter is an excellent way for the school to communicate with parents. In addition to providing a profile of our many activities, it contains key dates and information—upcoming events such as parent interviews or exams, changes being considered at the school, messages from school office—Parents regularly tell us they value and appreciate learning about what is happening in their children’s school. Parents receive four newsletters each year. Keep them on the refrigerator!

9 . Along the hallway (走廊), I saw mixed expressions on the faces of my students: excited, nervous, and worried. No doubt about it: they were this term’s freshmen. My own first day at high school flashed into my mind.

Since our family had just moved to the place, I didn’t know anyone at the school. On arriving, I picked up a map and my schedule (日程表). Oh, my goodness, what a large school it was! Nervously, I looked about for where my first class was to be held.

When I finally found my class, everyone was talking and laughing together, and I felt so lonely. Throughout the day, each period brought some new faces I had not seen before. But when my English class came around, I had a surprise: an old classmate! It was Ben, who had left my middle school right after sixth grade. We talked and joked about middle school and the clubs we were in together. My nerves eased (放松) a little.

Next was the P E. class. This was the first class that I found without difficulty. Sitting through the boring introduction to the class by the teacher, I started talking to a girl sitting near me. I found out that her family had just moved here too, and she didn’t know anyone either. As we talked, we discovered that we had a lot in common, and had a lot of classes together. This girl ended up becoming my best friend. I am so glad that I met her.

By the end of that day, I was full of optimism (乐观). I knew that high school would be an amazing experience.

10 . When was the last time you told someone they inspire you to go to work each morning?

Teachers at Oak Park High School in Kansas City, Missouri, did just that this September, when they pulled individual students out of class to tell them just how much they appreciated them.

The students’ reactions, which were captured (捕捉) on video and shared on YouTube in a now-viral video, ranged from shy thanks to hugs and tears.

“I have been challenged to find a student who makes me want to come to school every day,” says one teacher in the video, “and that’s you.”

Jamie McSparin, a teacher in charge of the school’s academy program for at-risk sophomores (二年级学生)and juniors, posed the challenge, writes ABC News.

“Initially when we pulled the kids out, they all thought they were in trouble,” McSparin told ABC News. “Any teacher-student interaction always seems to be negative, and that was something that bothered me, too. No matter if they’re a good kid or a trouble maker or anything, they always thought they were in trouble,” she says.

McSparin says she got the idea for the project after attending a professional development workshop this summer called the power of positivity.

“I like the idea of letting students know they are appreciated, because we do appreciate them, I just don’t think we say it enough,” she told local news outlet WDAF-TV. It’s safe to say the challenge was effective.

“I feel special,” said one of the boys in the video. “You should,” said his teacher. “You are special.”
