1 . The world celebrates Earth Day every year on April 22. But one school in Potomac, Maryland tries to honour Earth Day every day. Very young children are learning about the environment and taking action to show their love for the Earth.

A child’s world is the world of playing. They love being outside in the open air, playing hide-and-seek, sliding and swinging on playground equipment. But children at St. James Children’s School also add to that fun by picking up rubbish in the school yard. Inside, they learn to save water and electricity. They also recycle and reuse the waste. And every spring they get the soil ready to plant flowers and vegetables in the school garden.

The children at St. James range from six weeks to six years old. The environmental study begins at age two. Rebecca Boker teaches the children the importance of taking care of the Earth. Boker says every day at St. James is Earth Day. She mentioned some books, which contain materials that ask children to do something to help the environment and protect the Earth.

At St. James, children observe the growth of plants from seeds to sprouts (新芽) in cups kept in the classroom. Then they watch the plants continue to grow after placing them in the garden. The students also observe the life cycle of insects. After that, they know it is their job to respect the Earth just like they want others to respect their home.

But do these young children really get the message that their teachers try to communicate? Ms. Boker says yes. A few days later, the kids at St. James will go out to the school garden for the yearly clean-up. But for them, Earth Day will continue for the schooldays ahead as well.

3 . News of the upcoming English Talent Show aroused the interest of my roommates and inspired us to perform.    1     First, we chose the drama The Villains Lair, featuring the most iconic Disney villains as they plot their revenge. We wrote our script based on The Villains Lair, added amusing lines into the story and named it Villains' Tea Party. In the play, Godzilla comes to a tea party uninvited and guests try to decide whether the character is a villain.     2       We also drew inspiration from the animated film, Wreck-It Ralph 2.

We designed the settings and made most of the stage props by ourselves.     3     We even woke up early to rehearse acting onstage. Of course, we couldn't avoid arguing during the preparation over the lines and acting style. Thanks to our outspoken personalities, we dealt with many problems directly.

In fact, we thought we would be very nervous when we stood onstage, but we weren't. Though we carelessly broke a glass when we set the stage, we still completed the performance in a relaxing and calm way.     4     We had great success. Through this activity, we experienced the strength of cooperation and learned how to overcome difficulties.    5

A.A lot of humorous situations follow.
B.One of our favorite plays was about friendship.
C.We spent many evening classes secretly practicing.
D.We were together, and we teamed up with each other.
E.Most importantly, the experience will shine in our lives.
F.We started to discuss how to prepare for our English play.
G.As a stage manager, I had to make sure everything went well.

I'm writing to you to call for volunteers for Excellence Connections, a tutoring programme that matches 12th graders to the students from grade seven to nine to work together. 5 . In early November of 1942, my geology class was supposed to go on a field trip to see the mica mine (云母矿). Although it rained, everyone showed up on time. I was the only girl in the class. We all fit into two cars.

Near Deary, Mr. Tier, our teacher, went into a store to ask about the direction, while townsmen looked at us with curiosity. On the store owner's advice, we drove out into the hills for a few miles. Then we left the cars. We were afraid they would get stuck in the mud.

Eventually, we located the mine near the top of the mountain. There was a very small hole, running about two or three hundred feet into the mountainside. The passage was so narrow that we could touch both sides with our hands, and not tall enough to allow us to stand up straight. The first boy held the torch; we took hold of the backs of each other's coats, in a line, and followed him in, ducking our heads. After getting in, we were disappointed because it was not the mine our teacher was looking for.

The rain was coming down hard as we started back to the cars to go home. Back at Deary, we went into a drugstore and stood around its big heating stove to dry out. The clerk was a middleaged lady. Seeing our entirely wet hair and clothes, she handed each of us a cup of hot water immediately and asked if there was anything wrong with any of us.

Hiking eight miles in the rain had not reduced our interest at all. We all felt we had had a wonderful time, even if we didn't find the mine.

1. Why did the class leave the cars halfway?
A.Because their cars broke down in Deary.
B.Because it was not easy to drive in the mud.
C.Because townsmen were curious about their cars.
D.Because the store owner gave them a wrong direction.
2. What does the underlined word "ducking" in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Turning.B.Touching.
C.Lowering.D.Hitting.
3. What can we know from the passage?
A.The author was not liked by her classmates.
B.The weather terribly influenced the trip.
C.The teacher was not professional enough.
D.The class failed to see the mica mine.
4. Where is the text most probably taken from ?
A.A personal blog.
B.A writing guide.
C.A science magazine.
D.A literary journal.

7 . In high school, you can take part in a club you enjoy, whether that’s singing coking, or something else.     1     If your school doesn’t offer a club that interests you, staring your own club will allow you to continue to enjoy this hobby. Follow the steps below to start a club.

Brainstorm ideas.

First, decide what you want your club to focus on. You may already know, but if you don’t, think about activities you enjoy doing.    2     You can do this by looking at your school’s student handbook or asking someone at the school office.

Decide the club’s goals.

3     Think about what the aim of the club is, and what activities you want members to take part in. By making them clear, you will be able to provide a clearer vision (构想) of your club when you present the idea to the school and potential members.

Register (登记) your club with the school

Most high schools require clubs to be school-agreed.    4     If your school doesn’t agree, you likely won’t be able to have club meetings or post information at school, so learn how to register your club and make it official.

    5

Once your club is allowed by the school, it’s time to recruit (招募) members. Mention your club to your friends and people who you think will be interested. If your school allows it, create and post flyers one week before the first meeting that state the club’s name, goal, and the time and date of the first meeting.

A.Spread the word.
B.Hold your first club meeting.
C.If you enjoy skiing, you could start a ski club at your school.
D.Clubs allow you to practice this hobby, learn more, and get better at it.

9 . As a teacher, you will use many ways to nurture (滋养) friendships among students. Now here are some steps for you to teach them friendship skills.

    1

Students should examine their surroundings and find someone with whom they would like to play or talk. Students should be given examples on examining how people will look like when they want to play or talk.

Smile and get close to the person

The teacher should model walking up to someone with a smile on her face.     2

Introduce themselves

Students should say their names, ask the other person his name, and look at the person and smile.

Ask open-ended questions to get information     3     Students need to know that     open-ended questions have answers of more than two or three words. Students should remember to look at the person and smile. A list of questions can be provided for the students if they are able to read. This step will depend on the level of the students.     4

Students should find some activity or game to play on the playground during free time. The teacher can encourage students to join in an activity and provide ideas for students so their interaction will continue.

Once students have learned these skills, you can provide them with simple reminder cards with words or pictures so they can practice on their own. Teaching these steps will be even more effective if you use children’s literature to show how friends are made.

B.As the saying goes “Laughter is the best medicine.”
C.Students should practice this over and over.
D.Suggest something to play together.

10 . “The failure to play is now a serious issue and it calls for action for change,” says Sir Ken Robinson, a leading expert in education, creativity and human development. This is the driving force behind Outdoor Classroom Day—a global teacher-led campaign, supported by Dirt is Good, a company producing daily chemical products.

Outdoor Classroom Day, taking place on 17th May and 1st November this year, will see schools around the world swap the inside for the outside and take learning into the playground and beyond to make playtime a key part of the school day. This might involve using natural objects like stones to do sums, or going on an insect hunt to encourage curiosity. By now, Outdoor Classroom Day has grown from a grassroots movement to a global campaign that is expected to benefit five million children and over 40,000 schools from all around the world in 2018.

This is helping to change the trend that sees many schools selling up or building on their playgrounds and cutting back on playtime to make more room for academic studies, while at home children’s lives are increasingly filled with organized activities intended to help them learn. Today globally 61% of parents surveyed in the Dirt is Good Qualitative Study said that children don’t know how to play without using technology.

Outdoor Classroom Day is making playing time happen, with 22% of participating schools having increased their playtime since joining the campaign. 93% of teachers surveyed saw improvements in children’s creativity after playing outside, and 97% believe that time outdoors is necessary for children to reach their full potential.

Scientific studies show that real play—the active, physical, self-directed play—is essential for children to develop key life skills that are not taught elsewhere. Few would question the value of developing creativity, leadership, resourcefulness, and curiosity.

1. What do children do on Outdoor Classroom Day?
A.Have P.E. classes on the playgrounds.B.Have a day off and go playing anywhere.
C.Learn and play by using natural things outside.D.Play on their own without the teachers’ guidance.
2. Why do children spend less time outdoors?
A.Schools stop providing playgrounds.B.Adults ignore the importance of playtime.
C.Parents prefer to home school their children.D.Technology helps children learn better at home.
3. What’s the school teachers’ attitude towards the campaign?
A.OpposedB.ColdC.EnthusiasticD.Favourable
4. What’s the passage mainly about?
A.To introduce an activity.B.To advertise a product.
