2 . Terri Bolton is a dab hand when it comes to DIY (do-it-yourself). Skilled at putting up shelves and piecing together furniture, she never pays someone else to do a job she can do herself.
She credits these skills to her late grandfather and builder Derek Lloyd. From the age of six, Terri, now 26, accompanied Derek to work during her school holidays. A day’s work was rewarded with £5 in pocket money. She says: “I’m sure I wasn’t much of a help to start with, painting the rooms and putting down the flooring throughout the house. It took weeks and it was backbreaking work, but I know he was proud of my skills.”
Terri, who now rents a house with friends in Wandsworth, South West London, says DIY also saves her from losing any deposit when a tenancy (租期) comes to an end. She adds: “I’ve moved house many times and I always like to personalise my room and put up pictures, so, it’s been useful to know how to cover up holes and repaint a room to avoid any charges when I’ve moved out.”
With millions of people likely to take on DIY projects over that coming weeks, new research shows that more than half of people are planning to make the most of the long, warm summer days to get jobs done. The average spend per project will be around £823. Two thirds of people aim to improve their comfort while at home. Two fifths wish to increase the value of their house. Though DIY has traditionally been seen as male hobby, the research shows it is women now leading the charge.

3 . Some of the best advice I ever heard was: “Get 3 hobbies, one to keep you physically active, one to express yourself creatively, and one to make you social.” I don’t know if that’s a famous quote but it really inspires me.
Set some physical goals for yourself. Maybe it’s running a marathon, maybe it’s lifting your own body weight, maybe it’s riding a unicycle to work every morning.
Finding a hobby is probably the hardest one right now. I would recommend some goal-oriented video games with voice chat. I started playing VR paintball last month, which was incredibly helpful for me. You might also want to look into joining an online Dungeons & Dragons game.

7 . Alex Davani is mostly an A-student at Don Juan Avila Middle School, but he was not good at math last year. To get better grades in math, Davani learned to solve the Rubik’s Cube.
Davani wasn’t the only one. Teacher Ron McDevitt gave all his students a chance of getting a high grade if they could beat the cube, and he gave more scores for faster times. “A Rubik’s Cube is a lot like math,” explained McDevitt. “If you make one bad move with the cube, you have to go back a step or start over. At math, it’s the same way. It forces you to go slowly and be patient.”
For Davani, solving the cube was great fun. With about six months of practice, he could solve the Rubik’s Cube in under 30 seconds. So Davani decided to enter a world competition in Las Vegas. Davani is placed in the middle among about 800 competitors, and with more practice, he hopes to raise his position next year. He also got to meet cubers from 37 countries, and had lunch with four of the best cubers.
So how does Davani solve the cube so quickly? “It’s mostly just practice,” he said. “You will form muscle memory after lots of practice. You memorize the method and you don’t even have to think about it. Your fingers move naturally.”
“I teach my kids how to solve it and they can vanquish me now,” said McDevitt whose best record is around two minutes, much longer than many of his students. “I’ve never had a student take it as far as Davani and compete. That’s pretty cool.”

8 . If you’re gathering your teenage kids in the living room to watch “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” on Disney+, just know there’s a good chance they’d rather be playing “Fortnite”, a popular game.
That could totally be the case according to a new study from a consulting firm in Deloitte, which analyzed the generational divide in at-home entertainment.
The study, based on an online survey of more than 2,000 consumers, showed preferences are changing rapidly between millennials and the younger generation when it comes to how they want to spend their leisure time.
For Gen Z, defined as those born from 1997 to 2007,video - whether movies or television shows - is not a priority, the study found. 26% of Gen Zers in the survey said playing video games as their favorite entertainment activity, compared to 14% for listening to music, 12% for browsing the Internet and 11% for engaging on social media. Only 10% said they would rather watch a movie or TV show at home.
That compares to millennials (born 1983 to 1996),18% of whom chose watching movies and TV shows as their preferred mode of entertainment. Video games were the the entertainment option of choice for 16% of millennials.
“Gen Z would much rather spend time gaming, listening to music or using social media,” Jana Arbanas, entertainment leader at Deloitte, said. “That was a really alarming contrast that we saw relative to the shift that's happening and how Gen Z will impact this industry.”
“Millennials took the behaviors they developed as teenagers, and they've taken them forward into their early 30s, and so if Gen Z is anything like that, their behaviors may change slightly, but I don't see a complete aging out of their behaviors,” said Kevin Westcott, technology, media and telecom leader.

Standing in front of the mirror one day, I came to the disturbing realization that I fell short of the requirements of my dream. The reflection that stared back was of a skinny brown-haired girl who stood a mere five feet tall. My entire life had been about dedication and trying to be the best dancer in my studio. I’d always had brilliant dreams and high ambitions. I never noticed how hard it might be to achieve something that you really wanted. Most people spend their whole lives searching for their calling, but I’ve known that I was born to be a dancer since I met my brilliant inspiring mentor, Lorie Bernier, 5 feet 1 inch. I’ve devoted sixteen years to helping my dream come true to be a lifelong dance teacher at my studio.
Last summer I attended an audition class in Boston taught by a highly respected Broadway dancer. At this seminar he explained the procedures for getting into a dance company. While listening and taking notes, I was thinking that I certainly had the experience, but there was one area where I didn’t quite measure up. He informed us that at most audition all dancers under 5 feet 6 inches are automatically eliminated or simply overlooked. He said that most casting directors were looking for the stereotyped dancer with long legs, a long neck and a size one waist. Standing half a foot under this height, I felt my heart drop to the floor.
It is really hard to listen to someone basically telling you, “Sorry, but you’ve been working really hard for sixteen years for nothing, so find a new dream.” Unfortunately, it just doesn’t work that way. Dancing isn’t just a hobby for me; it’s more like an addiction. I exhibit every step heart and soul. Through dance I find a sense of pride and satisfaction that I don’t think anyone could understand or appreciate. To have all that I’ve ever wanted instantly shot down created a sick feeling in my stomach.
