文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了一项研究结果,阅读有许多好处,老师和家长应该让孩子们读他们喜欢的书,这会促进他们对阅读的热爱。

2 . A new study published in the journal Reading and Writing shows that reading is closely related to language skills. The piece was written by Sandra Martin, professor of education, and PhD student Stephanie Kozak. They found that people who enjoyed reading fiction for leisure and who saw themselves as readers scored higher on language tests, while those who read to access specific information scored more poorly on the same tests.

Martin and Kozak used a scale called the Predictors of Leisure Reading (PoLR) to investigate reading behavior. They then examined how well the PoLR predicted the language skills of 200 undergraduate students. The researchers note that the age range of the subjects in the study is of key interest. In early adulthood, reading becomes self-directed rather than compelled by others, which means people can choose to read any book they like. So, this is a key time for developing one’s own reading habits. But there is a general lack of research on this population, with most existing research mainly focusing on children.

The researchers administered(执行)a series of measures. First, the participants completed the 48-question PoLR scale measuring various reading factors, including motivations, obstacles, attitudes and interests. They were then given language tests similar to those found in the SAT and a measure of reading habits called the Author Recognition Test. This test asks participants to select the names of real fiction and non-fiction authors they are familiar with from a long list of real and fake names. Scores on this test are related to both actual reading behavior and verbal abilities: those who scored higher read more and have better verbal abilities than those who scored lower.

After analyzing the data, the researchers concluded that reading enjoyment, positive attitudes and deeply established interests predicted better verbal abilities and that they were more strongly associated with exposure to fiction than non-fiction.

The many benefits of reading have long been established. Besides having better verbal abilities, lifelong readers are known to be more understanding of others, to attain higher socioeconomic status and even to live longer, healthier lives than non-readers. The findings of the study can give teachers and parents some enlightenment(启发). They can promote a love of reading by letting young people read what they want, without guilt or shame.

A.Their reading speeds.B.Their reading frequencies.

2. What distinguishes Martin and Kozak’s study from most existing research?

D.By requesting them to do some SAT language tests.

9 . Teens and younger children are reading a lot less for fun. According to the annual Kids and Family Report, in just the last four years, the number of kids that read for fun has dropped by nearly 10%. Today, barely half of the children in the United States report liking to read for enjoyment.

When it comes to reading, kids can come up with a million excuses as to why they don’t like it. It can be frustrating trying to get your child to read, and it’s easy to rely on unsuccessful methods for encouraging reading Sometimes you tend to nag(唠叨)your child to read, or perhaps bribe(贿赂)him to read by offering him a reward. Unfortunately, these methods often do more harm than good. Nagging can lead your child to feel that he is being forced to read. And while rewarding your child for reading isn’t bad in itself, it shouldn’t be relied upon to get him to read.

It’s similarly important to reserve judgment regarding what your child chooses to read. While it might be your goal for your child to read To Kill a Mockingbird, reading about his favorite band in a teen magazine will also do. Reading is reading, and the more your child does it, the more he will enjoy it. And with increased enjoyment comes more frequent reading.

The best way to get your children to read more is to serve as examples and important guides for them. Research shows that kids and teens who do read frequently, compared to infrequent readers, have more books in the home, more books purchased for them, parents who read more often, and parents who set aside time for them to read.

1. What can we know from the report?
A.Children rarely benefit from reading.B.Children often find excuses for not reading.
C.Fewer children read for pleasure.D.Parents influence their children’s reading.
2. Why should parents reserve judgment?
A.To save children’s precious time.B.To lead children to love reading gradually.
C.To avoid unwanted distractions.D.To improve children’s reading skills.
3. How should parents encourage their kids to read more?
A.By inviting their teachers to read together.
B.By providing them with the latest books.
C.By engaging them in book clubs.
D.By acting as role models for them.
4. Who is this passage written for?
A.Teachers.B.Kids.
C.Parents.D.Writers.

10 . “For you, a thousand times over.” The words echoed (回响) in my heart long after I had finished the heartbreaking story. Each word struck me with the power of staunchness, the power of determination, and the power of love, whether it is from Hassan orAmir.

It’s hard to use a few words to describe what the story is about because too many things are revealed, friendship, familial affection, love, inferiority, timidity, betrayal, regret, atonement, etc. It’s even harder to imagine how the writer managed to expose so many aspects of human nature in just one story, with the truth of cruelty. Unlike many other stories in which the main characters are always perfect men or heroes. Kite Runner shows us a real man who is also desperate for others’ approval, who may also become timid in the face of challenge, who will also make big mistakes, just like most of us. In the story, we witness Amir’s growth from an immature, unconfident boy to a brave man, willing to shoulder responsibilities. But he grows up with pain and regret, and almost at the cost of his life.

The story strikes me with the cruel reality that some mistakes take a lifetime to make up for. Some hurt which has already been caused can never be undone. Some people, once left, may never return. So always keep a sense of responsibilities for what you are doing, so that unnecessary hurt can be avoided. If mistakes are made, try to make up for it at once, for you may never have a second chance. Also, cherish people you love when they are still by your side, for they may be away for good.

At last, I believe that the person, who is ever promised by others with the word “For you, a thousand times over”, is the luckiest guy in the world. I wish I could have this honor too.

B.Amir grows up happily with love and friendship.
C.Amir likes to challenge himself in growth.
D.Amir is a brave hero who loses his life at last.
3. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “for good”?
A.sometimesB.frequently
C.foreverD.occasionally
4. Which of the following will the author most agree with?
A.Wait for what you love though it’s far away.
B.Cherish what you have before it’s gone.
