4 . Some books to look forward to in 2024

The first few months of 2024 are piled with exciting and interesting reads . If you’re looking to get a jump ahead on the holds from your local library, here are just a few books we ‘re looking forward to.

James by Percival Everett

Celebrated author Percival Everett gives us Huckleberry Finn from Jim’s point of view. It’s far from a straight re-telling, though. Instead, Everett (but off his 2001 book Erasure being adapted into the film American Fiction) uses the beats of the original story to give us a send up of language and race.(Pub. March.19)

The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo

This standalone fantasy was inspired by the best-selling author’s own family history. It takes place during the Spanish Golden Age and follows a servant, hiding the fact that she can perform miracles. (Pub. Apr.9)

Private Equity by Carrie Sun

A memoir (回忆录) about the daughter of Chinese immigrants who ended up becoming an assistant to a billionaire hedge fund founder. It’s an examination of the hustle and tiring lifestyle that spreads American work culture, and the costs of extreme wealth. (Pub. Feh.13)

Legacy by Uché Blackstock

Uché Blackstock has had a long career in medicine as a doctor and as a professor of emergency medicine. Her account follows her growing up wanting nothing more than to be doctor, and discovering all parts of the systemic issues that lend to poorer health outcomes for Black Americans. (Pub, Jan.23)

文章大意:本文为一篇记叙文。在报纸逐渐被电子产品取代的情况下,凯尔西·罗素制作了TikToks,她找到了一种弥合鸿沟的方法,将纸质报纸带给人们阅读新闻。

5 . Newspapers are losing the battle against smartphones as the preferred place to learn the news, but one woman has found a way to bridge the divide and bring the print to the people.

Kelsey Russell makes TikToks in which she goes through a single article and explains the context along the way. “I got a subscription to the Sunday New York Times physical copy,” she said in one video. At first, she didn’t like reading from a small cellphone screen, and it was her doctor who brought her to print newspapers after suggesting she address her anxiety by going back to activities she enjoyed as a kid. “When I was little, I would read the newspaper with my parents,” she said. “So I said, ‘Let me just go back to what made me happy as a child.’”

“When I read the news on print, I actually had time to process what was going on.” Russell approaches her videos as a learning experience. She tries to read at least one newspaper a day. However, a part of Russell feared the bad news, and she said what she read often felt like depressing and disheartening. That experience isn’t unique; a recent report found many people actively choosing to avoid news because they consider news boring and despairing.

Despite the struggles, Russell’s unique approach has appealed to a wide audience, lifting her fame and influencing. She has almost 90,000 followers on TikTok and more than 5.3 million likes on her videos.

Still, Russell said she wasn’t seeking to revive (复兴) the print newspaper industry(a survey found that only 5% of adults preferred print publications) and she instead encouraged people to get their news from wherever they can. Her priority is simply that the news sources are credible. “Media literacy (素养) is bigger than just reading on print,” she said. “It’s also a great way for humans to think critically about the whole entire world.”

1. Why did Russell start reading newspaper in TikToks?
A.To manage her stress.B.To recall her childhood.
C.To digest current events.D.To promote physical reading.
2. What challenge does Russell face?
A.Managing audience engagement.
B.Addressing negative view of Tiktok.
C.Overcoming personal anxieties about news.
D.Approaching audience’s learning difficulties.
3. What is Russell’s main concern according to the last paragraph?
A.Attracting media’s attention.
B.Encouraging creative thinking.
C.Reviving the print newspaper industry.
D.Ensuring the reliability of news sources.
4. What is a suitable title for the passage?
A.Print News Meets TikTokB.News Revolution in TikTok
C.The Rise of Media EngagementD.Improving Digital Media Literacy

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道,主要讲述了菲律宾首都马尼拉的Hernando Guanlao在自己的家中设立了一个免费的公共图书馆,希望通过这个图书馆鼓励人们阅读,特别是年轻人。

6 . “A good book is easy to find.” That is the message on a sign at Hernando Guanlao’s home in the Makati area of Manila, the capital city of the Philippines.”

Guanlao has transformed his home into a free public library. Visitors can borrow the books inside for free. Guanlao says he hopes his library will inspire people to read, especially the young.

The 72-year-old told reporters that his library includes books that all students can enjoy —— from young children in Kindergarten to older students in grade 12. And also his library has books for readers of all interests. His home is filled with thousands of available books.

He calls his library Reading Club 2000. It contains many different kinds of books, or genres. Genre is a group of artistic, musical, or literary works that share a particular style, form, or content. “There are history books, novels, children stories in my library,” Guanlao added proudly, “and there are cookbooks, science fiction, and even medicine books.” Almost everyone can find a suitable book, all for free.

He started his library more than 20 years ago when he set 50 books on the walkway in front of his home. Guanlao’s collection has grown greatly over the years —— thanks to a continuous supply of books from donors.

Speaking of donors, he said, “They just leave boxes of books outside my house.” He has also started donating books himself. He sends reading materials to public schools in far-away communities.

Guanlao’s efforts come at a time when reading ability among students in the Philippines remains low. The Program for International Student Assessment reports that reading scores in the Philippines are among the lowest in the world.
