文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了垃圾收集者收集丢弃书籍并建造了一家图书馆的故事。文章旨在引导学生关注环境问题,树立废物循环利用的环保意识。

1 . One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. It is absolutely the case in Turkey where garbage collectors started collecting books that have been thrown away and ended up opening a library.

It started when garbage man Durson Ipek found a bag of abandoned books when he was working and then it snowballed from there. Ipek and other garbage men started gathering the books they found on the streets that were ready for landfills (垃圾填埋地) and as their collection started to grow, so did word of mouth. Soon, local residents started donating books directly. The library was initially available only to the garbage employees and their families to use but as the collection grew, so did public interest and the library was opened to the public in 2017.

“On the one hand, there were those who were leaving these books on the streets. On the other hand, others were looking for these books,” Ankaya mayor Alper Tasdelen told CNN. “We started to discuss the idea of creating a library from these books. When everyone supported it, this project happened.”

All the books that are found are sorted and checked for condition. If they pass, they go on the shelves. Today, the library has over 6,000 books that range from fiction to nonfiction and there’s a very popular children’s section that even has a collection of comic books. An entire section is devoted to scientific research and there are also books available in English and French. The collection has grown so large that the library loans books to schools and educational programs.

“Village school teachers from all over Turkey are requesting books,” Tasdelen told CNN. The government has to hire a full-time employee to manage the library.

This library is incredibly popular. It is frequently filled with the children of the city’s workers and students from nearby schools. There is a waiting room set up for readers and chess boards for the people who visit the library. You can even enjoy a cup of tea in the waiting room.

1. What does the underlined word “snowballed” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Grew slowly.B.Developed rapidly.

2. What do we know about the library?
A.You can’t find novels in the library.
B.There are only books in Chinese and English.
C.All the books that are found will go on the shelves.
D.Schools and educational programs can borrow books from the library.
3. Why did the government hire a full-time employee?
A.To raise people’s awareness of recycling.
B.To classify and check the donated books.
C.To meet the huge demand from rural teachers.
D.To expand the social influence of the library.
4. What can be inferred about the library from the last paragraph?
A.It provides a very considerate service.B.It’s crowded with readers every day.
C.It needs to improve its management.D.It’s an excellent place to enjoy tea.

The Forgotten Pages

Once upon a time, in a land far away, there was a small village. Surrounded by the majestic mountains, the villagers happily lived a life of bliss.

All of them were used to their robotic daily tasks and none of them had the imagination or the will to try something new, except for one girl named Hannah. Very few people in the village could read let alone write, and Hannah was one of them. Her parents had made sure that their only child got everything possible.

Hannah was an adventurous spirit with an imagination far beyond her time. One afternoon, when Hannah was on one of her adventurous quests, she came upon an abandoned cottage. The cottage looked very old in its condition. Even though Hannah’s mother had strictly warned her not to go wandering in abandoned places, her curiosity got the best of her.

She tip-toed slowly to the door and slowly opened it and she was left stunned. In front of Hannah was a room full of books! Books glistering in the dust, basking in the warm sunlight just waiting to be explored. Hannah gasped (倒吸气) as she realized that she had found a hidden treasure. Hannah broomed and dusted all day long until she realized it was dark and she had to go back. So Hannah picked two books and decided to read them at her home.

She went home and all night long, she read the adventurous tales hidden in the book cover. The next day, she quickly gulped her breakfast and made her way to the cottage again. Hannah devoured the books.

They were too interesting filled with stories about different creatures. Each page was just an adventure waiting to be embarked on. Hannah’s imagination took her to a world of talking animals, mystical creatures, and daring nights. The little girl was so inspired by the books and she learned the power of love and friendship! With the good in heart, she decided to share the tales with the people of her village.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍的是一项研究发现,在儿童期早期就开始以阅读为乐的孩子往往在认知测试中表现更好,进入青春期后心理健康状况也更好。

7 . Children who begin reading for pleasure early in life tend to perform better at cognitive tests and have better mental health when they enter adolescence, a study of more than 10,000 young adolescents in the China has found.

During childhood and adolescence, our brains develop, making this an important time in which to establish behaviors that support our cognitive development and promote good brain health. However, until now it has been unclear what impact—if any—encouraging children to read from an early age will have on their brain development, cognition and mental health later in life.

To investigate this, researchers from the universities of Fudan University in China and Cambridge in the UK looked at data from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development cohort (一群人) in the US, which recruited (招募) more than 10,000 young adolescents.

The team analyzed a wide range of data including from clinical interviews, cognitive tests, mental and behavioral assessments and brain scans, comparing young people who began reading for pleasure at a relatively early age against those who began doing so later or not at all. The analyses controlled for many important factors, including socio-economic status.

Of the 10, 243 participants studied, just under a half (48%) had little experience of reading for pleasure or did not begin doing so until later in their childhood. The remaining half had spent between three and ten years reading for pleasure.

When the researchers looked at brain scans from the adolescent cohort, they found that those participants who had taken to reading for pleasure at an early age showed moderately (有合理限度地) larger total brain areas and volumes, including in particular brain regions that play critical roles in cognitive functions. Other brain regions that were different among this group were those that have been previously shown to relate to improved mental health, behaviour and attention.

Professor Jianfeng Feng from Fudan University in Shanghai, China said: “Reading isn’t just a pleasurable experience—it’s widely accepted that it inspires thinking and creativity, increases empathy (同理心) and reduces stress.”

1. What function of the first paragraph?
A.It states the beginning of a study.B.It supports the author’s argument.
C.It presents a study’s findings.D.It introduces a social phenomenon.
2. Why did the analyses include socio-economic status?
A.They wanted to draw more accurate conclusions.
B.Poor family can’t afford reading materials.
C.People from rich family tend to ignore reading.
D.Socio-economic status plays a key role in reading.
3. What did the researchers do in conducting their study?
A.They asked participants to read.
B.They compared participants’ reading history.
C.They summarized the results of previous studies.
D.They encouraged participants to read for pleasure.
4. Which is true about the children who began to read early according to Jianfeng Feng’s words?
A.They grow mentally healthy.B.They do well in sports.
C.They are more academic.D.They are more outgoing.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章谈论的话题是狗能帮助孩子更好地阅读。一项新的研究发现,给狗朗读有助于提高阅读能力。

8 . Kids want to spend their summer vacations having fun in the sun with their friends. Reading may not even be on their list. But if you add a lovely dog, that could make reading a pleasant activity.

Now a new study found that reading to dogs helps to improve reading ability because dogs provide a nonjudgmental and supportive atmosphere(氛围).

Three educators from the college decided to look at new ways to get kids to read more after the Education Ministry expressed concern over a great drop in reading scores in fourth-grade students.

These students had reading difficulties because they did not go through school in person during the last three years. They missed out on reading practice with their peers(同龄人)during the second and third grades.

“We want to find an original way that would encourage students to practice their reading,” Har-Zvi, head of the special-education track and senior lecturer at the college said. “And to create that encouragement, we decided to do experiments with dogs.”

Reading to pets encourages kids to acquire confidence and interest in reading, according to the pet food company Purina. That’s not only because the practice of reading to dogs is used in home-schooling to help the kids acquire reading ability, but also because pets are comforting and nonjudgmental. Einat Artzi, whose daughter took part in the experiment, told Ynet that her daughter Michaela ”has loved dogs from a young age. Her experience of reading to dogs greatly increased her desire to read, and in her opinion, it improved her reading abilities. All in all, the experience of introducing dogs into the classroom made her feel comfortable and safe, and she began to enjoy going to school. Michaela is now considered one of the top readers in her class and has a very rich vocabulary. Thanks to this, we also took in a dog.“

1. What led three educators to try to get kids to read more?
A.Kids’ difficulty in making friends.B.Teachers’ passive teaching methods.
C.Their worry about students’ health.D.Concerns of education leaders.
2. What gave the kids confidence in the experiment?
A.The quiet listening of the dogs.B.The kids’ love for the dogs.
C.The parents’ joining them.D.The guidance from the teachers.
3. How did the experiment influence Michaela according to her mother?
A.It made her fall in love with dogs.B.It bettered her reading ability greatly.
C.It improved her relationships with others.D.It allowed her to take a dog to school.

9 . Jose Alberto Gutierrez’s life would never be the same again after finding a copy of Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy in the garbage 20 years ago. It happened while he was driving his garbage truck through wealthier neighborhoods at night and seeing deserted books. It sparked his desire to start rescuing books from the garbage. He took home between 50 and 60 books every morning after his nine-hour shift. Eventually, he turned his book collection into a community library.

Colombia’s capital city of Bogota has 13 million residents and 19 public libraries. However, these libraries tend to be far away from where rural and poorer communities live. The option of buying new books is non-existent for families struggling to make ends meet. Having access to a library of books and being taken away to another world while immersed in a book is a luxury for the kids who visit Gutierrez’s library.

Gutierrez grew up poor, and his family could not afford to educate him beyond primary school. Nevertheless, his mother was a keen reader and read stories to him every night.
