3 . Nowadays people rarely read for enjoyment, even though reading books used to be one of most people's recreations. It was an escape from the surrounding world, away from technology. However, these days has seen a sharp decline in how much time people spend reading books, news articles, short stories, and many other macro-reading materials.

Social media that have come out, such as Twitter and Facebook, have shortened the amount of time we need to read and process information. Twitter's character limit quickly summarizes information for readers so they do not have to bother opening and reading a longer article. Five minutes on Twitter can catch people up on their news for the rest of the day. Twitter and other social media sites can be regarded as micro-reading, which is a technology that takes bits of articles and summarizes them in a few brief sentences.

But Twitter isn't always able to thoroughly summarize a topic. A headline or summary can be misleading if the reader does not know the context. This can lead to misinterpretations of what an article is actually about.

The other day I was criticized for one of my columns. The criticism was strange, because it was barely connected to the article. When I countered their argument f saying that this opinion wasn't related to the article, they said they didn't read the story, only the headline.

As a columnist, I spend a good amount of time writing these columns and I hope people can read them with great attention. There are points that I am unable to sum up in a single line. If readers don't bother to read the article and only read the headline, they are not going to get the point of the piece of writing. This is why, as a society, we can't fully rely on social media for all of our information.

1. What can we know about most people in the past regarding reading?
A.They spent less time.B.They read for pleasure.
C.They read digital books.D.They read very quickly.
2. The author's personal experience is mentioned mainly to show that__________.
A.headlines and summaries are misleading for writers
B.micro-reading sometimes fails to summarize a topic
C.articles in a column seem to be easy to be criticized
D.people have trouble in selecting reading materials
3. What does the author expect of his/her readers as a columnist?
A.They can read the articles carefully.B.They will express personal opinions.
C.They can rely on news on social media.D.They will make a summary of the points.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Why Do We Read Less?B.Is Social Media Good?
C.How Is Information Got?D.Is Micro-reading Enough?

5 . Returning to a book you’ve read many times can feel like drinks with an old friend. There’s a welcome familiarity - but also sometimes a slight suspicion that time has changed you both, and thus the relationship. But books don’t change, people do. And that’s what makes the act of rereading so rich and transformative.

The beauty of rereading lies in the idea that our bond with the work is based on our present mental register. It’s true, the older I get, the more I feel time has wings. But with reading, it’s all about the present. It’s about the now and what one contributes to the now, because reading is a give and take between author and reader. Each has to pull their own weight.

There are three books I reread annually .The first, which I take to reading every spring is Emest Hemningway’s A Moveable Feast. Published in 1964, it’s his classic memoir of 1920s Paris. The language is almost intoxicating (令人陶醉的),an aging writer looking back on an ambitious yet simpler time. Another is Annie Dillard’s Holy the Firm, her poetic 1975 ramble (随笔) about everything and nothing. The third book is Julio Cortazar’s Save Twilight: Selected Poems, because poetry. And because Cortazar.

While I tend to buy a lot of books, these three were given to me as gifs, which might add to the meaning I attach to them. But I imagine that, while money is indeed wonderful and necessary, rereading an author’s work is the highest currency a reader can pay them. The best books are the ones that open further as time passes. But remember, it’s you that has to grow and read and reread in order to better understand your friends.

1. Why does the author like rereading?
A.It evaluates the writer-reader relationship.
B.It’s a window to a whole new world.
C.It’s a substitute for drinking with a friend.
D.It extends the understanding of oneself.
2. What do we know about the book A Moveable Feast?
A.It’s a brief account of a trip.
B.It’s about Hemingway’s life as a young man.
C.It’s a record of a historic event.
D.It’s about Hemingway’s friends in Paris.
3. What does the underlined word "currency" in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Debt
B.Reward.
C.Allowance.
D.Face value.
4. What can we infer about the author from the text?
A.He loves poetry.
B.He’s an editor.
C.He’s very ambitious.
D.He teaches reading.

6 . We all like fantasy stories, and grow up reading and listening to fantasies. These tales fuel our imaginations, and satisfy our longings for adventures. The most interesting thing about fantasies is that their plots involve magical beasts and heroes, animal creatures talking like humans, and other things we can’t see in real life. Also, fantasies have a distinguished writing style, with freedom of expression.

Toy Fantasy

In toy fantasy stories, narrators(叙述者)bring their beloved toys to life that can live, talk, think, breathe and behave like human beings. You would see modern toy fantasies in a picture book format. Representative works are A. A. Milne’s Winnie the Pooh and Carlo Collodi’s The Adventures of Pinocchio.

Animal Fantasy

The animal fantasy tells tales about animals behaving like human beings, experiencing emotions, and having the ability to talk. However, animals in fantasies hold their various animal characteristics, too. Examples include The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame, Charlotte's Web by E. B. White, and The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter which influences children around the world.

Magical Fantasy

In a magical fantasy, you see a character having magical powers, or a strange magical object becomes the subject of the story. Stories of this type began widely spreading long ago, including Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and William Steig’s Sylvester and the Magic Pebble.

Modern Folktales

Modern folktales are types of fantasy that narrators tell in a traditional tale accompanying some typical parts, such as strong conflict, little description of characters, and sometimes magical elements. These tales come before all others and are popular, as authors throughout history, have written them. Hans Christian Andersen has written several tales of this category including The Nightingale, The Emperor’s New Clothes and Thumbelina.

7 . Stories play a vital role in the growth and development of children. The books they read and the characters they get to know can become like friends. It's also good for children to understand that books are   a useful source of information and that good reading skills are important for success in their future lives.

Children who can read well are more likely to have higher confidence levels. This will benefit them in school as they’ll feel able to participate fully in activities. Another part of building confidence is to know where you fit into the world. Stories can help with this process by showing children what people's lives are like where they live and in other parts of the world.

Stories are a great way to introduce new words and ideas into a child's language--starting with picture books for the very young, working up to more complex novels for teenagers. Fiction based on real life can also help children with their own life experience--it shows them how diverse the world is and that some people's lives are vastly different from theirs. And the process is done in a natural way. There's no actual teaching involved at all, but they learn from simply reading the story.

Reading helps children understand that there are other children who feel the same way and they are not alone. This helps children understand that feelings are normal and should be expressed. Watching their responses to the feelings of the characters in the stories will give you some idea of how a child feels about certain situations and emotions. For example, how the child responds to the character in the story feeling sad or scared will give you some idea of how the child thinks.

As you can see, children's stories are important for a number of reasons and form a vital part of the growing process. Being part of that process can bring children a sense of satisfaction as well as being great fun. So, go and get your children some wonderful books to allow them to enjoy a relaxing bedtime story.

A.Reading stories benefits children a lot.

A.Inspiring children to get good grades.
B.Supporting children's language development.
C.Aiding children with living in a better family environment.

3. What does the author think about learning through reading?
A.Unrealistic.
B.Effective.
C.Time-saving
D.Expensive.

8 . Your 2019 Reading List, Provided by Bill Gates

Do you want to be a billionnaire? Most of us can’t live like billionaire Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, but we can read like him. Gates recommended four books in 2019—though some were published earlier.

Leonardo da Vinci, by Walter Isaacson (2018)

The bestselling biographer of Steve Jobs and Albert Einstein researched deeply into da Vinci’s contributions beyond art, highlighting the breadth of his scientific, technological, and creative output. “Leonardo nearly understood almost all of what was known on the planet at the time. That’s mostly because of his curiosity about every area of natural science and the human experience,” said Gates.

The Best We Could Do: An Illustrated Memoir, by Thi Bui (2018)

Gates calls this graphic novel “really impressive”. Bui is the daughter of Vietnamese refugees who came to America after the fall of Saigon, and becoming a parent inspired her to look into her own parents’ miserable history. “I was struck by how the experiences Bui describes manage to be both universal and specific to their circumstances,” said Gates.

Lincoln in the Bardo, by George Saunders (2018)

Saunders, a long-time short story writer, won high praise for this novel. The book imagines the ghosts that haunt (萦绕) the basement of Willie Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln’s son, who died at 11 in real life. “Willie’s death after the Civil War made the president have a new understanding of the grief he’s creating in other families by sending their sons off to die in battle,” said Gates.

Origin Story: A Big History of Everything, by David Christian (2018)

This new book is by the creator of Big History, a free, online social studies course. It traces history in wide, sweeping movements, starting with the Big Bang, and it provides, in effect, a short course in modern science. This is a brief history of the universe. “David gets a little stuck on the current economic and political problems in the West, and I wish he talked more about the role technology will play in preventing the worst effects of climate change,” said Gates.

1. Which books refer to the field of science?
A.Leonardo da Vinci and The Best We Could Do
B.Lincoln in the Bardo and Origin Story
C.Origin Story and Leonardo da Vinci

9 . You should try your best to create your own family library so that you and your family are always learning. "It is a great mistake to think that education is finished when young people leave school. Education is never finished even if you grow older," said Mrs Child in The Mother's Book. "What is really interesting about having so many books in your home is that a book you purchase has a chapter about the deeper knowledge of your favorite subject at school," said a university graduate. Researchers in a study tries to identify what parents do has an influence on how well their children do on standardized tests. One positive aspect they find is the availability of a large number of books at home. This has a stronger connection, especially when you read to your children every day. This philosophy of learning is based on the reading of classic books. ” Clinton Fadiman said, "When you reread a classic, you do not see more in the book than you did before; you see more in you than before. " Classic books also make you smarter and wiser! The wisdom comes in the examples in the lives of the characters.

10 . Do you want to give your child the best start in life? Helping him to become a good, confident reader is one of the most valuable things you can do. These simple little things below take up your little time.     1

● Let your kid "catch" you reading. Buy a mystery novel or a fashion magazine the

next time you're at the grocery store. Maybe you guess it.    2

● Ask your child about what he's reading at school and at home.     3    . So

care about your child and get your child to talk about what his class is reading. If time is short, you can even do this on the drive home from school or while you're getting dinner ready.

● There are words all around. Point them out!     4     They're also on menus

and the backs of boxes. Point them out to your child. Ask him if he can read a word
you've both just seen, and if he doesn't know what it means, make a point of looking it
up in a dictionary when you get home.

5    This trick works for kids of almost any age. For the youngest kids, hearing a bedtime story makes them realize that books have words, and those words tell them many things. Older children can sit next to you and read along. Kids who are reading on their own might even want to read a story to you.

A.Turn bedtime into "story time".
B.But they can help develop your child into a good reader and writer.
C.Move your child into reading independently.
D.Words are on subway signs and the sides of buses.
