1 . How to read more and learn more
Today, more and more Chinese people enjoy sending and receiving messages on the phone. It can help them to get the latest news and communicate with friends. But I think I should read more books besides the textbooks, the more, the better. It can open my eyes and improve my language skills.
◆ Clear your purpose for reading
◆
No matter what you are reading, it is important to enjoy what you read. Your friends may tell you the books they love, but those books might not necessarily be the ones you enjoy.
◆ Give up books that you don’t enjoy
You may have chosen books that you are interested in, and they are right to your purpose. But while you are reading them, there may still be some books that you don’t enjoy reading. Whenever you realize that you aren’t enjoying the book you are reading, give it up.

4 . A second-grade education has not stopped garbage collector Jose Gutierrez from bringing the gift of reading to thousands of Colombian children. Gutierrez started rescuing books from the trash almost 20 years ago. He was driving a garbage truck at night through the country’s wealthier neighborhoods. The discarded (丢弃的) reading material slowly piled up. And now the ground floor of his small house is a makeshift (临时的) community library with about 20,000 books ranging from chemistry textbooks to children’s classics.
He says books are luxuries (奢侈品) for boys and girls in low-income neighborhoods such as his. New reading material at bookstores is too expensive. There are 19 public libraries in Bogota. It is a city of 8.5 million people. But the libraries tend to be located far away from poorer areas. “This should be in each corner of every neighborhood, in all the towns and all the rural areas,” says Gutierrez. “Books are the poor children’s lifesavers. And that is what Colombia needs.”
The 53-year-old Gutierrez has a love of reading that he says comes from his mother. She always read to him even though she was too poor to keep him in school. Up to now he has traveled to book fairs in Mexico and Chile to share his experience of starting a library with discarded reading material. And his fame as Colombia’s “Lord of the Books” has also brought him thousands of donated books.
Gutierrez is an enthusiastic reader of works by authors such as Leo Tolstoy, Victor Hugo and Mario Vargas Llosa. He says he does not reject technology that allows books to be read digitally. But he prefers to read the printed word on paper. “There is nothing more beautiful than having a book in your pocket, in your bag or inside your car.” he says.

5 . My son wants to be as funny as his father, but a lof of jokes he told are full of meanness and disrespect. Could I, as the responsible, supportive, and patient parent, find just the right book for my son? A book encourages my son to tell a joke that won’t demand having his mouth washed out with soap? I have to admit that I wasn’t confident.
Now, I have a book Jake the Fake Keeps It Real at hand. In fact, Jake is not a perfect kid. The first book in the series opens with Jake at first explaining how he cheated in an interview into a selective school and cheated on the academic admission marks.
The book is so funny and Jake’s behaviour attracts my son. As a matter of fact, my son thinks the entirety of the book is strangely mad. The book makes my boy forget his joke for a while and he begins to do the same thing as Jake. He chews the same piece of gum for six hours and writes a play about it, instead of turning the sprayer (喷雾器) on family members.
Though Jake looks like a bad boy, he is afraid of being the lonely weirdo, thinks he’s not good enough, and feels bad about cheating. His inner thoughts are not the same with his action. At the end of the book, Jake, with no talent, has to perform in the school talent show which is a final project and is worth a lot of credits. If he blows it, he has to quit the school and work on a fishing boat. Jake has nothing and knows he is a failure. Finally he looks into the blinding light and stands up from the piano.
The book taught my son a lot. He realized his problems. So I succeeded in one thing: Finding a funny role model for my son.

Last week, I read the book about how successful persons started their careers and succeeded. They met a number of difficulty and problems, such as lacking money and experience and arguing with their co-workers, they were not afraid of restarting again. Though they met many problems, some of that were even bigger than they could imagine, they still insist on what they had believed. They were unbeatable, so they succeeded in eventually. This book impresses me deep. Besides, from them stories, I learn that I should ever give up achieving my dreams no matter what happens. I wish my friends could read the book and get inspiring, too.
Reading is very important. It is one of the most important factors in becoming what you can be. Reading develops your brain, provides a window into the world around you and helps you for the improvement in all school subjects.
As important as reading is whether you know the following facts: 800 million people around the world cannot read or write. Many families (and some schools) have no books for children

8 . The Ice Cream Machine is no ordinary tale. It’s a flavorful (好味道的) book made up of six stories, all of which have the same title, but each has a different story centering on one subject, ice cream.
One ice-cream story focuses on a boy and his robot in the distant future. Another is about a father and daughter who invent an ice-cream machine. My favorite story in the book talks about two sisters, Pam and Penelope, who try to enter an ice-cream-eating contest. The six stories go with black-and-white illustrations (插图) from six different artists.
The Ice Cream Machine is inventive and fun. Its author, Adam Rubin, has a lot of experience when it comes to writing about food. His most famous children’s book is Dragons Love Tacos. It was a No.1 New York Times best-seller. “I like to write about food because it’s universally beloved by people of all different cultures,” Rubin says. “It’s something we can all relate to.”
Rubin hopes The Ice Cream Machine inspires kids to write. Its jacket turns into an envelope in which readers can send him their stories. Rubin says writers should write about things they like. “If you’re trying to write something that someone else likes, you might not get it right. Then no one’s happy,” he says. “But if you focus on writing about something that you like, then it’s fun. When it makes you happy, your writing will bring joy.”
I recommend The Ice Cream Machine to anyone who likes creative storytelling. The book goes down just like ice cream: smooth, enjoyable, and with a pleasant aftertaste.
Rubin’s favorite flavor of ice cream? “Chocolate chip,” he says. Don’t tell him, but the best flavor is actually birthday cake!

9 . Reading is essential but how can one choose the right books to read and where can one find them? A few famous people may give you some helpful tips.
● Read books from past eras.
●
Reading too wide a variety in too short a time would keep the teachings from leaving a lasting impression on you. Seneca the Younger, a first-century Roman philosopher, suggested that “you must linger (流连) among a limited number of master thinkers, and digest their works, if you would obtain ideas which shall win firm hold in your mind.”
● Shop at secondhand bookstores.
Virginia Woolf believed the works in secondhand bookstores have an attraction which the usual volumes of the library lack. Browsing through these books gives you the chance to run into something that wouldn’t have risen to the attention of librarians and booksellers.
● Check out authors’ reading lists.
In his 1940 guide How to Read a Book, American philosopher Mortimer J. Adler talked about how to choose books. He attached importance to those that other authors consider worth reading.
● Make the final decision by yourself.
A.Interest is the best teacher. |
B.Great authors are great readers. |
C.Leave some room for older works. |
D.Learn more about those great authors. |
E.Don’t jump too quickly from book to book. |
F.There’s no “best books” list that everyone should follow. |
G.Usually they are much more selective in organizing their collections. |
