文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一项新的研究发现,研究表明人所吃的食物会影响人的记忆力和思维。

1 . Mice were given a memory test in a lab at the University of New South Wales, in Australia. Scientist Margaret Morris set them in their usual box, but she rearranged the objects in the box. Some mice smelled them curiously, but others just moved on. They didn’t remember the objects were once in a different place.

The mice with sharper memory were fed with a regular diet of low-fat, healthy food. However, the mice that ate lots of junk food for two weeks – such as cake, meat pies, chips, and cookies – were forgetful.

Food can have the same effect on people, too. “If you’re eating junk food regularly, and not eating enough fruit and vegetables,” Morris said, “the changes inside your body may be affecting brain function” Changes inside the body can affect a person’s overall health, too.

Scientists have long known that the brain communicates with the stomach to control digestion. Recently, they have found that the stomach talks back. It may even tell the brain what to do.

Foods with too much salt and sugar affect the microbiome (肠道菌群) in your body by killing the right bacteria (细菌) in it. These bacteria protect you from illness and keep your mind sharp. Lacking them can lead to being overweight and depression.

Rob Knight is a scientist at the University of California, San Diego. He suggests eating yogurt, because it is packed with healthy bacteria. Does that mean no French fries? “Having them sometimes is okay,” Knight says. “It’s the long-term habits that really matter. Being good to your microbiome over the next six months is a lot more important than what you ate yesterday, or what you eat tomorrow.”

C.the stomach can keep one’s mind sharpD.the stomach can protect one from illness
3. Fatness and depression can be caused by ______.
A.microbiomeB.bacteria
C.too much salt and sugarD.yogurt
4. Which of the following is true about Robert Knight’s advice?
A.People must not eat French fries to protect their mircobiomes.
B.Eating yogurt for six month is good for body health.
C.It’s necessary to maintain long-term healthy eating habits.
D.What you eat tomorrow is the most important thing.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了被加工过的食品给人们的健康带来的害处。同时,文章还指出人们要避免这种食品还存在一定的困难。

2 . Processed foods like chips, sodas and frozen pizzas are full of salt, sugar, and fat. Now, scientists are trying to understand if there is something else about such foods that may be bad for humans.

Scientists have already linked low-cost, packaged foods to rising obesity rates around the world. Obesity increases the risk of many health problems. Three recent studies offer more clues on how our increasingly industrialized food supply may be affecting our health.

The researchers created a system that places foods into four groups. The system says highly processed foods are made mostly of industrialized materials and additives(添加剂). Sodas, packaged cookies, instant noodles and chicken nuggets(鸡肉块) are some examples of highly processed foods. But also included are products that can seem healthy, such as morning cereals, energy bars and some kinds of yogurt.

Researchers conducted a four-week study involving 20 people. They found that people ate about 500 more calories a day when fed mostly processed foods. That is compared to when the same people were given less processed foods. The researchers permitted the 20 participants to eat as much or as little as they wanted. They were taken to a medical center so their health and behavior could be observed. In another study, researchers in France found people who ate more processed foods were more likely to have heart disease. A similar study in Spain linked eating more processed foods to a higher risk of death in general.

When fed less processed foods, people in the study produced more of a hormone that controls hunger, and less of a hormone that causes hunger. The reason for the reaction is not clear. The scientists also found that people ate processed foods more quickly. Kevin Hall is one of the researchers who led the study. He said that processed foods were usually softer and easier to chew and swallow”. Hall noted the source of nutrients might make a difference. For example, fiber from fruit and vegetables may be better for making people feel full than fiber added to packaged foods such as energy bars and yogurt.

Avoiding processed foods can be hard, especially for people with limited time and money. Processed foods can also take many forms. In addition, companies continually re-engineer products to make them seem healthier. The newest studies may provide more reasons to avoid processed foods. But, they also call attention to the difficulty of coming up with ways to do that.

1. What kind of food do energy bars belong to?
A.Fairly health-friendly foods.B.Especially beneficial foods.
C.Relatively high-cost foods.D.Highly processed foods.
2. What can we know about eating more processed foods in Paragraph 4?
A.It does harm to people potentially.B.It can often result in death.
C.It makes people get less calories.D.It makes little difference to people’s health.
3. What is more likely to make people feel full?
A.Fiber added to packaged foods.
B.Fiber from fruit and vegetables
C.Highly processed foods like instant noodles.
D.Foods made mostly of industrial materials and additives.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A.Different Kinds of Processed Foods
B.Recent Studies on Processed Foods
C.How Bad Processed Foods Are!
D.Advantages and Disadvantages of Processed Foods

4 . 根据短文内容,判断短文后句子的正(T)误(F)。

Li Yuaner, who sells vegetables in Changsha, Hunan province, has attracted great attention from young people, with many expressing their wish to receive “the same type of service”. It turned out that Li has greatly satisfied young people’s diet needs.

Li has found that her son does not often cook at home because of busy schedules. He prefers to order take-out food, even though he thinks that eating too much take-out food can be bad for his health. After discussing with her son, Li decided to provide a “one-week menu” service to her buyers who are as busy as her son.

After buyers order, Li washes and cuts up vegetables, and also offers therm cooking tips. Thus, they can just buy and cook directly back at home. In addition, Li adds more vegetables in the menu to enrich the nutrition and to meet young people’s need of keeping fit.

Other customers who are tired of take-out food and don’t like to prepare food also expressed their appreciation of Li’s thoughtful service.

1. Many young people want to receive Li’s menu service.
2. Li’s son doesn’t like cooking at home because he thinks take-out food is good for health.
3. Li will offer both prepared vegetables and cooking tips to buyers.
4. Young people think that only eating vegetables can keep fit.
5. The customers who dislike preparing food also appreciate Li’s service.

5 . School closures due to the corona-virus mean that children across the United States have to go without formed lessons. But many are missing more than that; they’re lacking meals that were formerly provided for them by schools. Two-thirds of the 31 million American kids who regularly eat school lunches depend heavily on those meals to nourish (滋养) their bodies.

Some programs do exist for feeding children when schools are unable, such as the Summer Food Service Program and the Seamless Summer Option, which can serve as a model for times like these. Such programs use other locations as meal service sites, such as libraries and community corners, but the issue is the closure of many of these public sites which is happening at a rapid rate.

Then there is the additional difficulty of feeding groups of people at a time when groups of people are not supposed to gather, which is not safe during a viral outbreak and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have stated that administrators should ‘‘design new strategies (策略) to avoid providing meals in settings where people might gather in a group or crowd... such as ‘grab-and-go’ bagged lunches or meal delivery”.

These are strange and threatening times, with the corona-virus situation worse by the day. Low-income families suffer the most in times like these. They have less cash on hand to buy supplies; they may not have a vehicle in which to transport large quantities of food; their jobs tend to be more uncertain. It’s important to remember this and to continue donating, supporting, and showing mercy to less fortunate individuals in limes of difficulty. It shouldn’t be left entirely to school administrators to figure out how to feed hungry children, every community has a duty to ensure this happens

1. What issue does the passage chiefly focus on?
A.Making up for missing lessons.B.Providing meals for needy kids.
C.The great needs of poor families.D.The strict measures for virus prevention.
2. What is the challenge faced by programs like Seamless Summer Option?
A.What food to supply.B.When to close the public sites.
C.How to get the permit.D.Where to give out the food.
3. What is the purpose of strategies like “grab-and-go”?
A.To avoid crowd gatherings.B.To save people’s time.
C.To give away more food.D.To change people’s mind.
4. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A.Show the seriousness of the problem.B.Improve the general situations.
C.Call for more help or donations.D.Advertise their programs.

6 . Have you ever wanted to stop eating something sweet but you just couldn’t? Is it the first thing you do when you get home from school to look in the biscuit tin? Can you eat a huge bar of chocolate all by yourself? Can you say “no” to sweets at parties? If you can’t, then there is a reason … perhaps you are a sugar addict! Does that sound funny? Well, doctors say that people who eat sweets regularly can easily become addicted to sugar. What’s more, most sugar addicts don’t even realize that they are addicted! 7 . This time of year many of us are determined to get back into shape. But if you are having trouble fitting into your tight jeans, it may not be your fault. Scientists now believe that willpower alone is not enough to lose weight. They say success depends on your genes, hormones (荷尔蒙) and psychology.

A study of 75 people by BBC Science and Oxford and Cambridge Universities has looked into why one-size-fits-all diets are often not successful. The scientists divided over-eaters into three groups—people who feast, people who constantly crave food and emotional eaters. They tailored (定制) diets to the needs of each group.

Feasters can’t stop eating once they start. This is because they don’t have the hormones that tell them when they are full. Scientists designed a diet for this group paying special attention to high protein foods that make them feel full for a long time. This included fish, chicken, basmati rice and grains. Bread and potatoes were not allowed because they do not fill you up for long.

Constant cravers always feel hungry. Scientists say that certain genes stop the messages the stomach sends to the brain saying it is full, meaning the cravers always feel like they need more fatty, sugary food. Dieting seven days a week is very hard for these people, so scientists put them on a normal, healthy diet five days a week, and eating whenever they feel stressed. To help them change this behaviour, scientists offered them group support in meetings and online as well as a diet.

During the study, people from all three groups lost weight on the tailored diets, with feasters losing the most and constant cravers losing the least.

So what about you? If any of the eating habits sound familiar, perhaps you should consider a new approach to slimming for now.
1. What is the solution that scientists suggest for feasters?
A.Providing them with a certain hormone.
B.Designing a high-protein diet for them.
C.Reducing their calorie intake on the weekend.
D.Giving them group support in meetings and online.
2. It can be inferred from the passage that______.
A.Bread and potatoes are harder to digest than fish and chicken.
B.Anyone can lose weight only if he or she has strong determination.
C.Emotional eaters are more likely to lose weight than constant cravers.
D.Scientists will find one-size-fits-all diets for those who want to lose weight.
3. The passage is mainly about______.
A.Three factors that determine our success in getting back into shape.
B.Three approaches to losing weight according to eating habits.
C.Willpower is not enough to lose weight.
D.A research on tailored diets.

9 . Teenagers who spend hours in front of the television may have a poorer diet as young adults.

A study, which included nearly 1,400 high school students, found those who watched TV for five hours or more per day had less healthy diets than peers(同龄人) five years later. Why does this happen? Should the parents take any measures?

On the one hand, people who spend a lot of time in front of the TV, especially teenagers, may snack more, and that may affect their long-term diet quality.

On the other hand, TV ads for fast food, sweets and snacks tempt teenagers to eat more of those foods. And TV time might also replace exercise time for some kids.

Lead researcher Dr. Daheia of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, told Reuters Health a clear correlation(关联) between TV time during high school and diet quality in young adulthood. While the heaviest TV viewers were eating the most junk food, those who’d watched less than two hours per day had the highest intake(吸收) of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and high-calcium food. In her opinion, parents should limit and monitor TV viewing.

As far as I am concerned, children should watch no more than two hours of television per day. And parents should set a good example by eating right, being physically active and curbing their own TV time.

1. What’s the best title for this passage?
A.People Should Keep Away from TV to Keep Healthy
B.Teenagers’ TV Time May Affect Their Diets Later
C.Why Do Teenagers Like TV?
D.Parents’ Own Habits May Affect Children Later
2. What suggestion does the author give the parents?
A.They must watch TV with their children.
B.They can’t do what they don’t want their children to do.
C.They should forbid the children to watch TV.
D.They should pay attention to nutrition in diets.
3. The underlined word “curbing” in the last paragraph can be replaced by “_________”.
A.addingB.stopping
C.checkingD.controlling
4. According to the passage, heavy TV viewers tend to _________.
A.take in fewer vegetablesB.eat more fruits
C.eat less junk foodD.take in high-calcium food

10 . Organic food, grown without artificial chemicals,is increasingly popular nowadays.Consumers(消费者)have been willing to pay up to twice as much for organic goods. However,a study led by researchers at Stanford University says that organic products aren't necessarily more nutritious(有营养的),and they're no less likely to suffer from disease-causing bacteria, either.

The latest results suggest that buyers may be wasting their money,"We did not find strong evidence that organic food is more nutritious or healthier,"says Dr.Crystal Smith-Spangler from Stanford.

For their new study,Smith-Spangler and her colleagues did a review of two kinds of research, including 17 studies that compared health results between consumers of organic against traditional food products, and 223 studies that analyzed the nutritional content of the foods, including key vitamins, minerals and fats.

While the researchers found little difference in nutritional content, they did find that organic fruit and vegetables were 20% less likely to have chemicals remaining on the surfaces.Neither organic nor traditional foods showed levels of chemicals high enough to go beyond food safety standards. And both organic and traditional meats, such as chicken and pork, were equally likely to be harmed by bacteria at very low rates. The researchers did find that organic milk and chicken contained higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids,a healthy fat also found in fish that can reduce the risk of heart disease. However, these nutritional differences were very small.

Organic food is produced with fewer chemicals and more natural-growing practices, but that doesn't always translate into a more nutritious or healthier product.Experts state that whether you buy organic or not, finding the freshest foods available may have the biggest effect on taste.

1. The new research questions whether organic food       .
A.should replace traditional food
B.has been overpriced by farmers
C.is really more nutritious and healthier
D.is grown with less harmful chemicals
2. Smith-Spangler and her colleagues found that       .
A.organic food could reduce the risk of heart disease
B.traditional food was grown with more natural methods
C.there was not a presence of any forms of bacteria in organic food
D.both organic and traditional food they examined were safe
3. Which of the following is relatively healthier according to the passage?
A.Organic milk and chicken.B.Organic chicken and pork.
C.Traditional chicken and pork.D.Traditional fruit and vegetables.
4. What is the author's attitude toward organic food?
A.Enthusiastic.B.Doubtful.
C.Unconcerned.D.Positive.
