2 . That artificial food dyes(染料) are unhealthy is not news. Some are known to cause hyperactivity(多动症) in some children, affecting their ability to learn. But regulatory agencies around the world don’t necessarily agree on which food dyes are a problem, or why. That may soon change. An 2021 peer-reviewed report by California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment concluded that artificial food dyes “cause or worsen neurobehavioral problems in some children” and that the current levels regarded safe for consumption by the federal government are too high.

California is now considering requiring warning labels on food products and dietary supplements containing the seven most commonly used artificial dyes. The warning label requirement would put California on par with the European Union, which since 2010 has required food products containing certain artificial food dyes to carry warning labels about their negative effect on activity and attention in children.

Artificial dyes are used in foods for one reason: to make products look prettier. Bright colors make candies appealing, especially to kids. But dyes are also in chocolate cake mixes, sala dressings and other products that don’t seem to cry out for a color boost.

In Europe, it was the 2010 label lawmaking that triggered companies’ decisions to reformulate. “If you’re a company, you do not want to put a warning label on your product,” says Lefferts, an environmental health consultant. Warning labels are why European Starburst Fruit Chews are now colored with natural products, not the artificial dyes that brighten their North American counterparts(同类商品).

Given that artificial food dyes are excessively used, we need to be more cautious. After all, we don’t dye fresh fruits and vegetables, but we do dye candy and sprinkles, points out Joe Schwarcz, a chemistry professor at McGill University in Montreal. “The foods in which you find food dyes are foods that are poor in nutrition,” he says. “If you limit foods that contain food dyes, you automatically make your diet better.”

1. What can we learn about artificial food dyes from paragraph 1?
A.A 2021 report confirmed their negative effects.
B.The fact that they are harmful is newly revealed.
C.Regulatory agencies consider them a serious problem.
D.The Federal government thinks their current standard too high.
2. What does the underlined part “on par with” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.In opposition to.B.Ahead of.C.In line with.D.Behind.
3. Which might be a possible result of the new rule according to the article?
A.Food companies will stop coloring their products.
B.More fresh fruits and vegetables will appear in the market.
C.Food companies may replace artificial dyes with natural products.
D.It will be hard to find packaged foods without warning labels of dyes.
4. What’s Joe Schwarcz’s attitude towards artificial food dyes?
A.Approving.B.Concerned.C.Neutral.D.Indifferent.

3 . Living a healthy lifestyle contains making choices about the foods we eat as well as exercise and other daily activities. The term “healthy lifestyle” can be defined as “to improve and protect one’s health and well-being”. For this purpose, a healthy lifestyle can include good eating habits, regular physical activity and anti-alcoholism (抗酒精中毒).

First of all, good eating habits are the main way of living a healthy lifestyle. For instance, rushed morning routines, trying to lose weight, and lack of appetite (食欲) early in the morning are all reasons why people skip breakfast (不吃早餐). However, most experts think that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Another example is fast food; a hamburger from McDonald’s with special sauce and cheese is not exactly considered as a healthy meal. Our society today is developing fast and people are on the go at all times. It is much easier to stop and get fast food. As a result, humans become fatter. However, eating low-fat meals that include 5 to 9 serving of fruits and vegetables every day is an ideal healthy life plan. Therefore, good eating habits are the main way of living a healthy lifestyle.

Secondly, another way of living a healthy lifestyle is physical activity. Exercise is indeed part of life because it keeps the body and mind in good shape. Exercise reduces stress and contributes to (有助于) a good sleep. It can keep a person looking and feeling younger throughout his entire life, and it also helps build one’s energy and strength. So, physical activity is another way of living a healthy lifestyle.

Finally, another way is anti-alcoholism. Addiction to alcohol may cause serious social and public problems. It is accepted that driving after drinking is dangerous. Alcohol is a main factor of traffic deaths. Alcoholism can also lead to diseases, such as heart attack or liver trouble. Thus, anti-alcoholism is another way for a healthy lifestyle.

In conclusion, a healthy lifestyle can be maintained in three ways: the first way is good eating habits, the second way is regular physical activity and the final way is anti-alcoholism.

1. When it comes to living a healthy lifestyle, which of the following is not mentioned in the passage?
A.Good eating habits.B.Anti-alcoholism.
C.Physical activity.D.Losing weight.
2. What does the underlined phrase “on the go” mean?
A.Busy.B.Boring.C.Hard.D.Happy.
3. According to the text, how can we feel younger throughout our life?
A.By avoiding fast food.B.By being happy every day.
C.By taking regular exercise.D.By wearing some special clothes.
4. In what column are you most likely to find this text?
A.Life.B.Sports.C.Economy.D.Advertisement.
文章大意:本文是篇说明文。文章讲述了研究证明多吃草莓对人的身体健康有很大的好处。

4 . A new study finds that strawberries could help lower heart disease and prevent cognitive (认知的) decline in aging adults. The research and abstract were recently presented at Nutrition 2023 in Boston— an annual meeting for the American Society of Nutrition. The full study has not been published yet.

Dr Shirin Hooshmand, a professor in the School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences at San Diego State University said that the idea for this study came from previous research. “Before conducting our clinical study, some of the similar effects were shown in animal studies and some human studies, but in different populations and using different study designs,” Hooshmand explained.

The research team conducted a study with 35 men and women between the ages of 66 and 78 over an eight-week period. Each day, study participants consumed freeze-dried strawberry powder— equal to two cups of fresh strawberries. Following the eight weeks of consumption, the scientists found cognitive processing speed increased by 5. 2%, and blood pressure decreased by 3. 6%.

“Previous published research has already shown some of the long-term cardiovascular (心血管的) health benefits of strawberries in different populations. So this is great to confirm some of those findings,” Hooshmand continued. She said she hopes the findings motivate more aging people to consume more fruits daily, such as strawberries.

Hooshmand noted that her team have many ideas for future studies to follow up on some of their current findings. They are currently studying the impacts of strawberries on similar and other outcomes as part of a multi-fruit intervention.

Previous studies have found that consuming berries can help ease inflammation (炎症) and oxidative stress ((氧化应激) , which can trigger many diseases. Other studies have linked berry consumption to befitting and protecting certain areas of the body, including the nervous system, cardiovascular system, and immune (免疫的) system.

1. What can we know about the research?
A.More details have not been revealed yet.B.The findings need no further evidence.
C.It was targeted at junior citizens.D.It was fully published at Nutrition 2023.
2. What may Hooshmand advise aging people to do?
A.Protect their immune system.B.Pay attention to their health.
C.Have more physical activities.D.Eat more fruits like strawberries.
3. What does the underlined word “trigger” in paragraph 6 mean?
A.Judge.B.Affect.C.Cause.D.Avoid.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.Nutrition 2023 was held in Boston this year.
B.Aging people should prevent cognitive decline.
C.The American Society of Nutrition published its new research.
D.Strawberries could boost brain power and lower blood pressure.

7 . Living a Balanced and Healthy Life

What are the most important steps to follow if you want to feel good from morning to night? Feeling good means that your body and mind are working at their peak level. And you have a general sense of well-being.

To feel good day after day, try the following tips:

Get sunlight during the day.

Sunlight stimulates the brain chemical serotonin (血清素), which plays a role in helping you feel happy. While you’re outdoors in the sun, use the time to exercise.     1     And it may work better than medicine for preventing depression from returning. It can also help you reduce your anxiety.

Set yourself up for good sleep.

In the evening as the sky grows darker, your brain makes a hormone called melatonin (褪黑素).    2     Some of your choice during the day and evening affect your melatonin levels, which in turn can play a role in how well you sleep. So it’s suggested:

* Be sure to get that daily exercise in the sun, since it also helps you sleep at night.

*     3    . If your bedroom isn’t completely dark, you won’t make as much melatonin.

Eat “ feel-good ” foods

4       Keep these tips in mind:

* Focus on multicoloured whole foods that are recently alive. That means fresh vegetables, fruit, beans, and whole grains instead of processed foods.

* Make room for vegetables such as cauliflower, cabbage, and kale.     5

* Avoid foods that make your blood sugar soar like sweetened sodas and sugary baked goods. They aren’t good for your health, or your energy level.

A.Turn off the lights.
B.Turn on the lights.
C.This helps you get sleep.
D.They’re super-foods for feeling good.
E.Health depends on good food, fresh air and enough sleep.
F.The way you eat makes a bit difference in whether you feel strong or weak.
G.Research has found that physical activities can work well for treating depression.

9 . We all need to eat, and when we go to buy food at the supermarket, we’re offered many choice. But we often buy food that’s been produced in huge amounts and that’s traveled many miles before it ends up on our plate. So for some, growing their own food is a better choice – and it tastes good too!

From growing vegetables in little pots on your balcony to taking care of a small plot of land, there are many ways to produce home-grown food. It can be backbreaking work digging, weeding and watering the soil, but the result is fresh, home-grown fruits and vegetables, helping us keep a ‘five-a-day’ diet.

The recent Covid-19 pandemic lock-down means demand for homegrown food has seen a comeback in the UK. Miriam Dobson from the University of Sheffield, told the BBC that some people have been spending a lot of their time on their plots, growing plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables – which, at times, have been challenging to buy in supermarkets. She says “Coronavirus has reminded people of the weakness within our global food system. In such a difficult time, interest in self-support rises.”

But for those with limited space, a solution to grow your own vegetables lies closer to home – using pots. Sheila Brand lives in a third-floor flat in Rotterdam. She has managed to grow tomatoes and eggplants and is already harvesting raspberries. She told the BBC watching the plants grow “is very exciting: 'Oh it's got a new leaf!' ”

As well as the benefits of saving money and enjoying tasty food, growing your own from a balcony or window ledge not only improves your well-being and immediate environment, you can actually grow a lot of vegetables. So, maybe it’s time for us all to get planting and develop our green fingers!

1. A “five-a-day” diet (Para. 2) probably refers to a diet that include__________ every day.

A.It’s more interesting, cheap and delicious.
B.our global food system is doing harm to us.
C.It saves the time and money on transportation.
D.it can be hard to buy fresh food during the pandemic.
3. According to the writer, where can you grow your own food if you live in a small flat?
A.In a pot.B.On a plate.C.In a garden.D.On the roof.
4. What does the writer imply in the last sentence?
A.Growing your own food can do good to your health.

10 . It’s 3 o'clock and you’ve been hard at work. As you sit at your desk, a strong desire (欲望) for chocolate overcomes you. You try to busy yourself to make it go away. But it doesn’t. Here is another situation. Perhaps you are not feeling well. The only thing you want to eat is a big bowl of chicken soup, like your mom used to make when you were sick as a child. Food cravings are a strong desire for a specific type of food. And they are normal.

Scientists at the website How Stuff Works compare hunger and cravings this way. Hunger is a fairly simple connection between the stomach and the brain. They even call it simply “stomach hunger.” When our stomachs burn up all of the food we have eaten, a hormone (荷尔蒙) sends a message to one part of the brain for more food, which controls our most basic body functions such as thirst, hunger and sleep. The brain then produces a chemical to start the appetite (食欲) and you eat. Hunger is a function of survival.

A craving is more complex. It activates (刺激) brain areas related to emotion, memory and reward. These are the same areas of the brain activated during drug-craving studies. Because of this, some scientists call food cravings “mind hunger.” People often crave foods that are high in fat and sugar. Foods that are high in fat or high in sugar produce chemicals in the brain. These chemicals give us feelings of pleasure.

In a 2007 study, researchers at Cambridge University found that “dieting or controlled eating generally increases the possibility of food craving.” So, the more you refuse yourself a food that you want, the more you may crave it. However, fasting is a bit different. They found that eating no food at all for a short period of time reduced food cravings.

So, the next time you crave something very special, know that it’s the fault of your brain, instead of your stomach.

1. The author describes two situations in the first paragraph to ________.
A.deepen the understanding of hungerB.report the discovery of craving study

A.It shows food is connected with emotion.B.It makes sure that a person survives hunger.
C.It means the stomach functions well.D.It proves the brain decides your appetite.
3. What’s the likely result of dieting?
A.The drop of chemicals.B.The increase of food desire.
C.The refusal of fat and sugar.D.The disappearance of appetite.
4. In which part of a newspaper can you see this passage?
