文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍根据一项新的研究,在已经做好的饭菜中再加盐会导致过早死亡。

1 . Adding salt to already prepared meals is linked to dying prematurely, according to a new study. Researchers found always adding salt to food knocks 2.3 years off life expectancy for men and 1.5years for women.

The study did not rule out other factors, but researchers said the evidence was compelling enough that people should consider avoiding seasoning their meals. The findings were based on research involving over 500,000 participants, who were followed for an average of 9 years. Compared with those who never added salt, those who always seasoned their food had a 28% increased risk of dying earlier. “To my knowledge, our study is the first to assess the relation between adding salt to foods and earlier death,” said Prof Lu Qi, who led the work. “Even a modest reduction in sodium (钠) intake can result in remarkable health benefits.”

Salt intake is difficult to accurately track because many processed foods contain high levels of salt. Roughly 70% of sodium intake in western populations comes from processed foods, with 8-20% from salt added at the table. However, adding salt is a very good indicator of a person’s preference for salty tasting foods, so the team focused their analysis on this measurement.

Prof Annika Rosengren, a researcher who was not involved with the research, said that there is an ideal level for salt to different people. It’s hard to figure out the best level in terms of health for any given individual. “So far, what the evidence seems to indicate is that healthy people consuming normal levels of salt need not worry too much about their salt intake,” she said. However, those at high risk of heart disease should probably cut down. “Not adding extra salt to already prepared foods is one way of achieving this.”

1. What does the underlined word “compelling” probably mean?
A.Interesting.B.Convincing.C.Fascinating.D.Stimulating.
2. What does paragraph 3 imply?
A.Adding salt can suggest a person’s favor.
B.Western populations prefer salty foods relatively.
C.The study centered on tracking salt intake accurately.
D.More than 70% of sodium intake comes from processed foods.
3. What does Prof Rosengren probably agree with?
A.There is an ideal level for salt to all people.
B.It’s appropriate to add more salt while cooking.
C.Occasional addition of salt has no effect on health.
D.Patients with heart disease should control their salt intake.
4. Where is the text most probably taken from?
A.A biology textbook.B.An official report.C.A health magazine.D.A science fiction.

文章大意:本文为一篇说明文,主要介绍了考虑到健康问题,我们是否应该计算卡路里的摄入。

2 . Most of us want to get in shape and be healthy. For many of us nutrition (营养) and watching what we eat is an important way to stay healthy. But when it comes to food, what is calorie counting, and what are the positives and negatives of it?

A law in the UK came into force in April 2022 that requires restaurants, takeaways, and cafes to display the calorie information of non-pre-packed food and soft drinks on their menus. It’s a strategy aimed to deal with obesity and give people a more informed choice of what goes down into their stomachs. Being able to count calories and know how much we can eat is a great way to try and stay on track with our diet.

However, there are some disbelievers when it comes to calorie counting 200 calories of fresh fruit and 200 calories of junk food, for example cookies, have the same caloric value. However, there is a question of the health benefits of what you’re eating, regardless of calories. While fresh fruit like apples contains things like vitamin C, junk food could contain an unhealthy level of sugar and fats. Likewise (同样地), fruit may fill you up and leave you not wanting more food for longer than a biscuit with equal calories —meaning, overall, you eat less.

Simply counting calories, while useful for weight loss, doesn’t take into account your intake of good fats, carbohydrates, and proteins—things that your body needs. So, if you’re trying to stick to a low-carbon diet, just looking at numbers of calories on a menu won’t be that useful. So, always be mindful that what you’re eating is part of a healthy balanced diet.

1. What does the underlined word “obesity” in Paragraph 2mean?
A.being healthy.B.being strong.C.being fat.D.being sleepy.
2. What opinion do disbelievers hold?
A.Calorie alone doesn’t contribute to health.B.Junk food has more calories than fresh fruit.
C.Less calories mean less food in your stomach.D.Sugar and fats are more harmful than calories.
3. What’s the text mainly about?
A.The best way to keep in shape.B.A research result of obesity in the UK.
C.Nutrition and its health benefit.D.Opinions and comments on calorie counting.
4. From which section of a magazine is this text most likely taken?
A.Entertainment.B.Lifestyle.C.Finance.D.Education.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了2021年的一份报告证实了人工食用色素的负面影响,加州政府出台新规则,要求含有人工食用色素的食品贴上警告标签。

4 . That artificial food dyes (染料) are unhealthy is not news. Some are known to cause hyperactivity (多动症) in some children, affecting their ability to learn. But regulatory agencies (监管机构) around the world don’t necessarily agree on which food dyes are a problem, or why. That may soon change. A 2021 peer-reviewed report by California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment concluded that artificial food dyes “cause or worsen neurobehavioral (神经行为的) problems in some children” and that the current levels that are regarded safe for consumption by the federal government are too high.

California is now considering requiring warning labels on food products and dietary supplements containing the seven most commonly used artificial dyes. The warning label requirement would put California on par with the European Union, which since 2010 has required food products containing certain artificial food dyes to carry warning labels about their negative effect on activity and attention in children.

Artificial dyes are used in foods for one reason: to make products look prettier. Bright colors make candies appealing, especially to kids. But dyes are also in chocolate cake mixes, salad dressings and other products that don’t seem to cry out for a color boost.

In Europe, it was the 2010 label lawmaking that triggered (引发) companies’ decisions to reformulate. “If you’re a company, you do not want to put a warning label on your product.” says Lefferts, an environmental health consultant. Warning labels are why European Starburst Fruit Chews are now colored with natural products, not the artificial dyes that brighten their North American counterparts (同类商品).

Given that artificial food dyes are used far more than needed, we need to be more cautious. After all, we don’t dye fresh fruits and vegetables, but we do dye candy and sprinkles, points out Joe Schwarcz, a chemistry professor at McGill University in Montreal. “The foods in which you find food dyes are foods that are poor in nutrition,” he says. “If you limit foods that contain food dyes, you automatically make your diet better.”

1. What can we learn about artificial food dyes from paragraph 1?
A.A 2021 report confirmed their negative effects.
B.The fact that they are harmful is newly revealed.
C.Regulatory agencies consider them a serious problem.
D.The Federal government thinks their current standard too high.
2. What does the underlined part “on par with” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.In opposition to.B.In line with.C.Ahead of.D.Behind.
3. Which might be a possible result of the new rule according to the article?
A.Food companies will stop coloring their products.
B.More fresh fruits and vegetables will appear in the market.
C.Food companies may replace artificial dyes with natural products.
D.It will be hard to find packaged foods without warning labels of dyes.
4. What’s Joe Schwarcz’s attitude towards artificial food dyes?
A.Approving.B.Neutral.C.Tolerant.D.Concerned.

5 . Research studies indicate that children who eat breakfast perform better at school. Maybe it works that way for adults too since our brains need fuel to work properly.

Skipping breakfast is a common way for people who are trying to lose weight, but unfortunately, it’s usually not a successful way. Your body (or more likely, your brain) expects to be refueled a few times each day. When you don’t eat breakfast, you may feel so hungry by lunchtime that you eat more foods than you normally would, which cancels out the calories you cut by skipping breakfast. You may also be tempted to choose foods that are not the healthiest choices when you feel like you are starving.

For many people, eating breakfast may be an important part of a weight loss diet. Research studies tell us that people who eat breakfast are more likely to keep up a healthy weight. Some experts believe that breakfast keeps your metabolism (新陈代谢) running higher. In fact, it takes three or four days of eating nothing before the body starts changing down your metabolism. It’s more likely that people who regularly eat breakfast also make good dietary choices the rest of the day.

Breakfast should include a healthy source of protein and plenty of fiber; the combination will help satisfy your hunger and will keep you feeling full until lunchtime. The protein can come from low-fat meat, low-fat dairy products, or nuts. Eggs are also a good source of protein. High-fiber foods, include fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

If you really don’t like to eat breakfast in the morning, you can split it up into two smaller meals. Eat a hard-boiled egg, or a small cup of yogurt at home before you leave for work, and then about an hour or two later, take a break from work and snack on an apple and a handful of healthy nuts like pecans or walnuts.

1. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A.Eating breakfast keeps us healthier than skipping it.
B.Skipping breakfast isn’t very useful for losing weight.
C.Our brain needs a lot of fuel to work properly.
D.What healthy food we should eat for breakfast
2. What does the underlined word “tempted” Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Pretended.B.Determined.C.Attracted.D.Warned.
3. All the following are a good source of protein EXCEPT _______.
A.low-fat meatB.low-fat dairy products
C.vegetablesD.eggs
4. The passage is most probably taken from _______.
A.a news reportB.a personal diary
C.a biology bookD.a healthy life website

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一项新的研究发现,研究表明人所吃的食物会影响人的大脑功能和整体健康。

8 . Mice were given a memory test in a lab at the University of New South Wales, in Australia. Scientist Margaret Morris set them in their usual box, but she rearranged the objects in the box. Some mice smelled them curiously, but others just moved on. They didn’t remember the objects were once in a different place.

The mice with sharper memory were fed with a regular diet of low-fat, healthy food. However, the mice that ate lots of junk food for two weeks — such as cake, meat pies, chips, and cookies — were forgetful.

Food can have the same effect on people, too. “If you’re eating junk food regularly, and not eating enough fruit and vegetables,” Morris said, “the changes inside your body may be affecting brain function.” Changes inside the body can affect a person’s overall health, too.

Scientists have long known that the brain communicates with the stomach to control digestion. Recently, they have found that the stomach talks back. It may even tell the brain what to do.

Foods with too much salt and sugar affect the microbiome (肠道菌群) in your body by killing the right bacteria (细菌) in it. These bacteria protect you from illness and keep your mind sharp. Lacking them can lead to being overweight and depression.

Robert Knight is a scientist at the University of California, San Diego. He suggests eating yogurt, because it is packed with healthy bacteria. Does that mean no French fries? “Having them sometimes is okay,” Knight says. “It’s the long-term habits that really matter. Being good to your microbiome over the next six months is a lot more important than what you ate yesterday, or what you eat tomorrow.”

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。作者通过描述大卫·布鲁内利参加一个吃东西比赛的情景,引出了吃东西比赛的话题。文章介绍了比赛的流行程度以及可能带来的健康问题和不良影响。

10 . David Brunelli has eaten up a huge burger. He starts eating handfuls of French fries. If he eats them fast enough, he could win. The crowd shouts with excitement. Suddenly, a stream of food pours out of Brunell' s mouth. Puking (呕吐) during an eating competition means you lose. So Brunelli catches the food in his hands and pushes it back into his mouth. Welcome to the world of competitive eating.

Thousands of eating competitions take place around the world each year. To win, people like Brunelli eat huge amounts of food as quickly as possible. They eat everything from mountains of hot dogs to hundreds of chicken legs.

Some people say it is time for eating competitions to stop. One reason is that the competitions can lead to serious health problems. These include weight gain, heart disease, and stomach problems. In 2004, a woman died from choking (窒息) during a competition. Eating competitions can make overeating look attractive. This sets a bad example for fans. Also, millions of people in the world go hungry every day. That makes it seem wasteful to eat amounts of food just for fun.

Still, many people love competitive eating. They say it is a fun tradition that goes back many years. Fans point out that the group Major League Eating (MLE) runs professional eating competitions. At these competitions, injuries are uncommon. MLE always has doctors on hand.

Eating competitions allow people like Brunelli to get famous and win money. And the competitions are popular. Each July 4, more than a million people watch Nathan s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest on TV. This year, will you be one of them?

1. Why does the author write the first paragraph?
A.To bring up the topic.B.To introduce Brunelli.
