1 . Winter is a great time to experiment with new sports. The key is to find one that matches your interests and natural abilities. If you like to walk, keep walking—on snowshoes. If you want to try an endurance sport, go for cross-country skiing. Besides, snowboarding is just great fun.

Not satisfied with these? Try downhill skiing, then. Downhill skiing is not as hard as it used to be—shorter, lightweight, curved skis make any beginner feel like an Olympic winner. These newer skis—along with another type of equipment called ski boards, which are even shorter than skis—help you control your speed and body movements.

Consider testing the latest high-tech skis or snowboards? Check with your local sports shops or the rental places at the ski mountains about sample programmes.

You could also try sledding. Use a wood-framed sled with steel runners or a plastic sled to head down a snowy hill. If you prefer ice to snow, think hockey or figure skating.

Runners can also train during the winter in spite of wet or slippery roads. One of the easiest sports around, snowshoeing can be excellent cold-weather cross-training for runners and cyclists—or anyone wanting to take a wintry walk in the woods. Snowshoes are smaller, lighter, and better than ever. If you want to try them out, you may be able to rent a pair for a day at many of the larger outdoor or sporting goods stores.

Whatever sport you choose, don’t rely on a friend for instruction. You wouldn’t let an inexperienced doctor perform a brain operation on you, but why let one teach you to ski or skate? That’s what instructors are for—to help newcomers start out right. Instructors can give you advice about equipment, techniques, safety, and dealing with injuries if they do happen to you.

Above all, if you want to progress, invest your time in learning the basic skills thoroughly. Everything else you do as a skier, boarder, or skater will be built on these first skills.

1. How many different types of sports are mentioned in the FIRST TWO paragraphs?
A.Six.B.Five.C.Four.D.Three.
2. What do we learn from the passage?
A.Runners and cyclists cannot train because of the wet or slippery roads in winter.
B.Downhill skiing used to be more difficult to learn because of the old-fashioned skis.
C.People cann’t rent snowshoes for a day at their local sports shops or the rental places.
D.In general, first skills are more important in skiing than in snowboarding or skating.
3. Who are the most likely readers of the passage?
A.High school students.B.Physical educators.
C.Winter sports lovers.D.Professional athletes.

3 . According to a recent report, about 15% of the people in the UK are members of gyms. But are they more likely to be fit?

A study found that gym members were 14 times more active than people who didn’t belong to any health club. Gym members did six hours more exercise a week, and this activity did make them fitter than non-gym members. They also spent less time sitting down every day than non-gym members. The results were the same for men and women.

The study included 405 people between the ages of 30 and 64, and the main characteristics of those who were gym members were the same as those who were not. “But gym members did more training than non-gym members,” said the lead author, Elizabeth Schroeder of the University of Illinois.

While it might seem clear that gym members exercise more and are healthier than non-gym members, Schroeder says this has not been directly shown before. However, the study is only designed to show a tie between gym membership and more exercise. It may be that active people like to join gyms. In the study, people who exercised as much as gym members were also in good health.

You can get the same benefits wherever you exercise. This study shows a gym membership can make you do more exercise, but other research shows that exercising outside has other help. Outdoor activity can make you feel happy about life, especially if you run through a forest.

Outdoor exercise is also more interesting than going to the gym. The first five minutes of outdoor exercise is especially helpful in making people feel good. But Schroeder says that a gym may also encourage greater exercise because it can be social and fun.

1. What did the new study find out?
A.British people are crazy about the gym.
B.Gym exercise is better than outdoor exercise.
C.Gym membership can make us healthier.
D.Gym is necessary for our daily life.
2. In the study, researchers studied ________.
A.people between aged 30 and 64B.the same number of men and women
C.405 gym membersD.people with the same characteristics
3. The study is aimed to build a tie between ________and ________.
A.active people; more gym exerciseB.more exercise; health
C.gym membership; more exerciseD.happiness; more exercise
4. The underlined “other help” means outdoor exercise can make you ________.
A.healthierB.happierC.more socialD.more helpful
5. Which statement will Elizabeth Schroeder agree with?
A.Women should do more gym exercise.
B.We should be careful with outdoor training.
C.Outdoor exercise is better than gym exercise.
D.We may make great exercise if we go to the gym.

4 . Walk with a Purpose

Humans are made for walking. And wherever you are, in the city or at the campground, you'll find plenty of walking going on. This month, why not walk with a purpose?

To get started, sit down with a map and make a plan. Ask yourself, what do you want to get out of walking? Do you want to keep fit? Do you want to meet other people? See new places? Or get out into the wilderness?    1

If improving your relationships with your friends is your goal, call up your friends and schedule walks with them.    2    This will introduce you to new places. Go online and look up your local malls or shopping centers. Many malls have groups that come every day, or every weekend. These groups are always happy to include one more walker.

3    Put on your walking shoes and prepare to get to know a new place from the ground up! Many of our great historic cities offer well-planned walking tours. You can follow the famous red stripes(条纹)through Boston's historic buildings or walk your way through the sites of Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia.    4    Those maps are usually provided by the tourist bureau(局).

From the advantages to your heart to your overall happiness, walking is just good for you.    5    Just don't forget the sunscreen, hat and plenty of water!

A.Why not head to a new city?
B.Your friends will be happy to join you.
C.Pick up a map and start walking this month.
D.Ask your friends where they like to walk and go there.
E.You might also find open groups of dog walkers at your park.
F.Nearly any city you can think of offers a walking tour with maps.
G.Knowing your purposes will help you decide on the type of walk you want to do.

5 . If you’ve recently joined a gym, or are just looking to try a new, different form of exercise, you might consider trying a group exercise class. Classes are a great way to workout. Here are a few tips to help you relax and prepare for your first class.

Choose the right class for you. Most gyms offer a wide range of different classes and choosing one that is right for you is the first step. To begin with, you need to think about what it is that you want to achieve and work from there.     1     If you’re looking for a more relaxing form of exercise that will improve your flexibility, then yoga might be a good option.

Think about what you might need.    2     Wear clothes that are comfortable and suitable for the type of exercise you’ll be doing. For example, yoga requires stretchy clothes that will allow you to move. Often classes don’t require anything out of the ordinary, but it doesn’t hurt to check.

Arrive early. Try to arrive at least 5 minutes early so you can get your bearings and think about the studio and any equipment you’ll be working with. Some classes such as weight-based classes require a lot of equipment which usually takes a few minutes to set-up.    3     So give yourself time.

4     Group exercise is set up for a group of people to benefit from professional instruction not for participants to compete. While it is hard to resist trying and keeping up with the people around you, the best thing you can do is focus on your own body and what you’re feeling and able to handle. If you’re uncertain how an exercise is best carried out, ask your instructor.    5

A.Don’t compare yourself to others.
B.Talk to the instructor before class.
C.Use the equipment to give yourself a warming-up.
D.You don’t want to be running around at the last minute.
E.Copying the person next to you might mean you’re learning incorrectly.
F.Plan for your class by thinking about what you’ll need to wear and bring with you.
G.For instance, if you’re looking to gain muscle, a weights-based class will be your best bet.

6 . American Harvey Sutton, a 5-year-old boy, just finished walking the whole length of the Appalachian Trail (路线), one of the longest footpaths in the world. Harvey is one of the youngest people ever to walk the trail. He and his parents completed the trip in 209 days.

Harvey climbed over tall rocks and got to watch wild animals. “The rock climbs were really hard but fun. We were not bored.” said Harvey. His parents tried hard to him happy and excited. His father said meeting and talking with other hikers along the way prevented boredom.

Harvey was 4 years old when he and his parents began their walk in January. He turned 5 before the family completed the trip earlier this month in Maine. But the youngest of all to finish the trip may be Juniper Netteberg. The little girl finished walking the footpath at age 4 with her parents last October.

The long hiking may seem like an extreme activity for a child, but Dr. Laura Blaisdell sees no harm. She is a children’s doctor and medical adviser to the American Camp Association. Dr. Blaisdell said children are strong enough for the experience if parents attend to their child’s usual social and emotional development.

Harvey’s, trip earned admiration from another hiker, Dale Sanders. He is the oldest person to hike the footpath, which he did at age 82. “It’s going to change his life forever, and his parents’ life, too. The kid went through some hardships, but don’t we all? Hardships make us stronger,” said Sanders, now 86. “That kid is going to smile through life.”

1. Which of the following words can best describe Harvey’s trip?
A.Exciting but adventurous.B.Difficult but interesting.

7 . In 2007, Bianca Valenti had an experience which nearly killed her. When she surfed (冲浪) at Ocean Beach in San Francisco, she met a wave as tall as a two-story house.

The wind was strong enough to block my vision. The moment I went under water, I was just getting knocked and spun (旋转) every which way. And then my feet touched the sand bottom there. When I swam to the surface, my lungs were burning painfully. I just thought to myself, “If there’s one more wave after this, I’m going to die.” Luckily there wasn’t another wave. That was when Valenti knew she had the drive and skill to surf big waves.

By 2014, Valenti surfed and won her first big waves contest (比赛) at Nelscott Reef in Oregon. There, she met fellow professionals Alms, Moller, and Kennelly. “One thing got me fired up at that point,” she said. “I wanted to have the opportunity to win more events, but there weren’t more events for women. That’s really annoying.” Luckily, Valenti, Alms, Moller, and Kennelly decided to stick together, support each other, and then fight together.

The four surfers formed Committee for Equity in Women’s Surfing (CEWS) to fight for entrance at Mavericks—a contest set in the surfing location of the same name, north of Half Moon Bay. Mavericks was invitation-only and was open to only men when CEWS was formed. Now, through the organization’s hard work with the State of California, women are allowed to surf in the event.

When Valenti was young, there weren’t many women represented in surfing culture. “I think it’s important for young kids to have all kinds of role models. That way they know all the people who they see as superheroes are just normal people who have crazy dreams. And sometimes the dreams aren’t even that crazy. If you work hard and you stick together with your friends, you can do anything. You can move mountains.”

1. What inspired Valenti to surf big waves?
A.Her gift in learning surfing skills.
B.Her near-death experience in 2007.
C.Her courage to challenge men surfers.
D.Her ambition to be the best role model.
2. What does “fired up” probably mean in Paragraph 3?
A.Angry.B.Excited.C.Satisfied.D.Concerned.
3. What do we know about Mavericks in Valenti’s time?
A.It was named after a famous surfer.
B.All surfers were admitted to it freely.
C.Surfers could only attend it by invitation.
D.Valenti won the contest for the first time.
4. Which of the following words can best describe Valenti?

8 . Shi Yilong started to learn rollerblading (滑冰) and entered the Beijing team when he was 15, then joined the national team for freestyle skating and finished second in the World Championships at age 17. When he was 23, he retired and learned skateboarding (滑板) and skiing (滑雪). Shi Yilong has been fully exploring his life.

After retiring, he went back to Beijing and tried some jobs, but he found that they were not what he wanted. He chose to quit after working in a financial company for about a year.

“The moment I stepped on the skateboard, I was free. Skateboarding brings me a sense of freedom and lights up my enthusiasm,” Shi said.

Youths like him are often thought of as “rebellious (叛逆) teenagers,” but Shi has found there is another more positive understanding: the term "rebellion" can show a person’s attitude, persistence, and love. It is a process to repeatedly reassure himself. “I love to compete with myself,” he said.

In others’ eyes, Shi Yilong is a person who changed the game into “something” else — he set up his own company.

“If you keep on doing one thing for 10 years, you will have your rewards. I was just like this. I have done what I love for many years. From a penniless person to a person with his own company, all I got came from love,” Shi Yilong said.

Skateboarding is a lifelong sport for all ages. Whether it is as young as a 3 or 4-year-old kid, or as old as 70 or 80 years old, people can enjoy skateboarding.

“However, you can do different tricks at different ages. For example, we’ll challenge ourselves with more difficult tricks when we are young. Then, you start to stylize your tricks. When we get older, all we might ask for is to just keep skateboarding,” Shi Yilong said, “This is also my attitude towards life.”

1. Why Shi Yilong quit the job in a financial company?
A.He did better in sports.
B.He wanted to rebellious things.

9 . Group exercise is one of the most effective ways to improve physical fitness and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Group exercise is challenging, yet fun and empowering! Of course everyone knows that exercise is good for the body. However, studies have shown that when exercise is performed in groups, it’s not only great for improving physical health but for psychological health. It’s an opportunity to be social, release endorphins (内啡肽), and improve your strength. Additionally, group exercise creates a community feel and the shared common goal motivates participants to work hard. The instrumental support of taking on a fitness journey with others proves more effective than going to the gym alone.

Another beneficial aspect of group exercise is the informational support participants receive from the instructor. Many people fear the gym because they feel lost and don’t want to embarrass themselves. If you feel you can relate, then group training is an even better option for you. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about fitness through the clear instruction and supervision of a fitness instructor. If you’re tired of wandering around the gym wasting time and becoming bored, you can attend an upbeat group fitness class that’ll keep your workout on track. Don’t let fitness frighten you!

If you’re serious about wanting to live a healthy lifestyle, it’s extremely important to surround yourself with people who’ll provide you with the proper emotional support. I wouldn’t scold anyone for deciding to party on weekends and in turn I wouldn’t expect anyone to give offence to me for focusing on my health. Surround yourself with people who uplift, encourage and understand you! Make fitness even more fun by trying something new or any group fitness class, with a friend. Plan to go for a jog together. Then try a fun healthy restaurant or fresh juice bar! Fitness can be both fun and social!

Surrounding yourself with people who’ll provide you with respect and support can be very beneficial while working towards reaching health and fitness goals. First, decide to do it for yourself and work towards staying positive. Then make sure the people you surround yourself with are supportive. Don’t let negativity ruin your motivation.

10 . Today, millions of kids around the world will fight childhood obesity (肥胖)by getting up, getting outside and exercising all at the same time. The children are taking part in Project ACES.
