2 . The Nose on Your Face

The human nose gives to the languages of the world many interesting expressions. Of course, this is not surprising. Without the nose, we could not breathe or smell. It is the part of the face that gives a person special character.

In English there are a number of phrases about the nose. For example, to hold up one’s nose expresses a basic human feeling -pride. People can hold up their noses at people, things and places.

The phrase, to be led around by the nose show man’s weakness. A person who is led around by the nose lets other people control him. On the other hand, a person who follows his nose lets his instinct (直觉、本能) guide him.

3 . The ear is made up of three different sections that work together to collect sounds and send them to the brain: the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear.

The outer ear is made up of the pinna and the ear canal. The pinna is the part of the ear you see on the side of your head. Its main job is to gather sounds and funnel them to the ear canal, which is the pathway that leads to the middle ear. Glands (腺) in the skin lining the ear canal produce earwax (耳垢), which protects the canal by cleaning out dirt and helping to prevent infections.

The middle ear is an air-fill hole that turns sound waves into vibrations and delivers them to the inner ear. The middle ear is separated from the outer ear by the eardrum (鼓膜), a thin piece of tissue stretched tight across the ear canal. Sounds hit the eardrum, causing it to move.

The vibrations from the middle ear change into nerve signals in the inner ear. The inner ear includes the cochlea (耳蜗) and the semicircular canals. The snail-shaped cochlea changes the vibrations from the middle ear into nerve signals. These signals travel to the brain along the cochlear nerve, also known as the hearing nerve.

Teach kids to protect their hearing by paying attention to the noise levels they’re exposed to. Have them turn down the volume on video games, TVs, and, especially, portable music players. Make sure they take hearing protection (like earplugs or protective headphones) when they’ll be around loud noises (at a concert, car race, etc.).

If your child has any trouble with hearing, turn to your doctor. Treating hearing loss early can limit the damage.

1. What’s the function of the ear canal?
A.To serve as a bridge.B.To produce earwax in the ear.
C.To prevent infections.D.To gather and funnel sounds.
2. Which part is between the outer ear and the middle ear?

5 . Researchers continue to show the power behind our sense of smell. Recent studies have found, among other things, that the smell of foods like pizza can cause uncontrollable anger in drivers on roads.

The review explains that smell is unique in its effects on the brain. According to Conrad King, the researcher who carried out the review, "more than any other senses, the sense of smell goes through the logical part of the brain and acts on the systems concerned with feelings. This is why the smell of baking bread can destroy the best intentions of a dieter."

Smell, which dictates the unbelievable complexity of food tastes, has always been the least understood of our senses. Our noses are able to detect up to 10,000 distinct smells. Our ability to smell and taste this extremely large range of smells is controlled by something like 1,000 genes (基因), which make up an amazing 3% of the human genome. Researchers Richard Axel and Linda Buck were together awarded a Nobel Prize in 2004 for their ground-breaking research on the nature of this extraordinary sense. These two scientists were the first to describe the family of 1,000 olfactory (嗅觉) genes and to explain how our olfactory system works.

According to one study in the research review, smelling fresh pizza or even the packaging of fast foods can be enough to make drivers feel impatient with other road users. They are then more likely to speed and experience uncontrollable anger on roads. The most reasonable explanation is that these can all make drivers feel hungry, and therefore desperate to satisfy their appetites.

In contrast, the smells of peppermint and cinnamon were shown to improve concentration levels as well as reduce drivers’ impatience. Similarly, the smells of lemon and coffee appeared to promote clear thinking and mental focus.

However, the way genes regulate smell differs from person to person. A study by researchers in Israel has identified at least 50 olfactory genes which are switched on in some people and not in others. They believe this may explain why some of us love some smells and tastes while others hate them. The Israel researchers say their study shows that nearly every human being shows a different pattern of active and inactive smell-detecting receptors.

1. What did Richard Axel and Linda Buck find out?
A.The category of food smells.
B.The logical part of human brain.
C.The nature of human olfactory system.
D.The relationship between food and feelings.
2. Which of the following can help people concentrate?
A.Bread.B.Fruits.
C.Coffee.D.Fast food.
3. What do we know from the last paragraph?
A.Some people can recognize up to 50 smells.
B.Every person has a different pattern of genes.
C.Different people are sensitive to different smells.
D.There are still some olfactory genes to be found out.
4. What is the passage mainly about?
A.Logic and behaviour.
B.Smell and its influence.
C.Sense ability and food tastes.
D.Olfactory genes and its system.

8 . What Does the Length of Your Fingers Say About You?

Are you the peace-loving type or the ambitious go-getter? Your finger length might be a clue. Take a look at your fingers. Would you believe me if I told you that the length of your fingers in relation to one another can predict your personality? I know that it sounds like one of those silly tests you see on Facebook, but I have to admit that it is exactly correct for me. Here’s how it works.

Look at your three middle fingers of your hand. Is your index finger longer than your ring finger? Is your ring finger longer than your index finger? Or are the two of the same length? Find the situation that best matches your hand and see if what follows is an accurate description of your personality.

Longer ring finger: The Sweet Talker

If your ring finger is longer than your index finger, research shows that you’re likely a charming type, and you can probably talk yourself out of any situation. Others often find this personality type irresistible and will go to great lengths to help you. You’re more likely to take risks, and you’re good at problem-solving. People in this category make great engineers, soldiers and crossword-puzzle solvers.

Longer index finger: The (Over) Confident One

If your index finger is longer than your ring finger, chances are you are full of confidence—possibly even to the point of being over-confident and proud. You are not necessarily introverted (内向的), but you do enjoy time to yourself, especially when you’re trying to complete a project. You are a dream pursuer who can make things happen, but you may be shy when it comes to taking the first step in a relationship. You are also probably happy with what you have, but you’re always wishing for more.

Index and ring finger are of the same length: The Peacemaker

If your index finger and ring finger are roughly of the same length, you are likely to avoid conflict at all costs and seek to keep the peace in your relationships. You are well-organized, faithful and sympathetic. But deep down under all of that caring and peace-loving, you also have a hot-tempered side that can appear unexpectedly when you’re pushed too far. You will try your hardest to avoid a fight.

How well do these descriptions match your personality? I was surprised at the accuracy in my case, but I’m not going to tell you which one it was!

1. Which of the following hand could be an engineer’s hand?
A.B.C.D.
2. We can learn from the passage that the author ______.
A.is very charming and helpfulB.always tries hard to avoid a fight
C.often takes silly tests on FacebookD.thinks the descriptions suit him well
3. What does the passage intend to tell us?
A.How accurate the description of the test is.
B.The length of fingers can reveal personality.
C.Why your fingers are not of the same length.
D.Personality is determined by your finger length.
4. Where can you probably find the text?
A.A popular magazine.B.An official report.
C.A public advertisement.D.A biology textbook.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要从科学书上节选出一些生理现象。如:人的血液是红色的,为什么静动脉的血液是蓝色的?是心脏的工作强度大,还是大脑的工作强度大等关于我们身体信息的问题及回答。
9 . Below is a selection from a popular science book.

If blood is red, why are veins (静脉) blue?

Actually, veins are not blue at all. They are more of a clear, yellowish color. Although blood looks red when it’s outside the body, when it’s sitting in a vein near the surface of the skin, it’s more of a dark reddish purple color. At the right depth, these blood-filled veins reflect less red light than the surrounding skin, making them look blue by comparison.

Which works harder, your heart or your brain?

That kind of depends on whether you’re busy thinking or busy exercising. Your heart works up to three times harder during exercise, and shifts enough blood over a lifetime to fill a supertanker (超级油轮). But, in the long run, your brain probably tips it, because even when you’re sitting still your brain is using twice as much energy as your heart, and it takes four to five times as much blood to feed it.

Why do teeth fall out, and why don’t they grow back in grown-ups?

Baby (or “milk”) teeth do not last long; they fall out to make bigger room for bigger, stronger adult teeth later on. Adult teeth fall out when they become damaged, decayed (腐烂) and infected by bacteria. Once this second set of teeth has grown in, you’re done. When they’re gone, they are gone. This is because nature figures you’re set for life, and what controls regrowth of your teeth switches off.

Do old people shrink (收缩) as they age?

Yes and no. Many people do get shorter as they age. But, when they do, it isn’t because they’re shrinking all over. They simply lose height as their spine (脊柱) becomes shorter and more curved due to disuse and the effect of gravity (重力). Many (but not all) men and women do lose height as they get older. Men lose an average of 3-4 cm in height as they age, while women may lose 5 cm or more. If you live to be 200 years old, would you keep shrinking till you were, like 60 cm tall, like a little boy again? No, because old people don’t really shrink! It is not that they are growing backwards—their legs, arms and backbones getting shorter. When they do get shorter, it’s because the spine has shortened a little. Or, more often, become more bent and curved.

Why does spinning make you dizzy?

Because your brain gets confused between what you’re seeing and what you’re feeling. The brain senses that you’re spinning using special gravity-and-motion-sensing organs in your inner ear, which work together with your eyes to keep your vision balance stable. But when you suddenly stop spinning the system goes out of control, and your brain thinks you’re moving while you’re not.

Where do feelings and emotions come from?

Mostly from an ancient part of the brain called the limbic system (边缘系统). All mammals have this brain area—from mice to dogs, cats, and humans. So all mammals feel basic emotions like fear, pain and pleasure. But since human feelings also involve other, newer bits of the brain, we feel more complex emotions than any other animal on this planet.

If exercise wears you out, how can it be good for you?
1. What is the color of blood in a vein near the surface of the skin?
A.Blue.B.Light yellow.
C.Red.D.Dark reddish purple.
2. Why do some old people look a little shrunken as they age?
A.Because their spine is in active use.
B.Because they are more easily affected by gravity.
C.Because they keep growing backwards.
D.Because their spine becomes more bent.
3. Which of the following statements about our brain is true?
A.In the long run, our brain probably works harder than our heart.
B.When our brain senses the spinning, we will feel dizzy.
C.The brains of the other mammals are as complex as those of humans.
D.Our feelings and emotions come from the most developed area in our brain.

A.To give advice on how to stay healthy.
B.To provide information about our body.

10 . When most of us look at our hands, we might notice that we need to clean, or stop biting our fingernails, and that’s about it. But if you ask a doctor, he can see a whole lot more. Everything from poor diet and stress to serious kidney (肾) problems can be revealed by a glance at your fingernails.

There are about 30 different nail signs that can be associated with medical issues, though may indicate more than one problem, according to Dr. Amy Derick, a clinical instructor of dermatology at Northwestern University.

Here are five of the things a doctor can tell about your health based on your fingernails.

1. People who aren’t eating well and lack vitamin or dietary may have thinner than normal nails, which are more likely to break.

2. Horizontal lines are associated with serious physical stress. They frequently occur in people who have gone through chemotherapy(化疗).They can also occur after some illnesses, injuries, or with severe malnourishment(营养不良).Interestingly, there may be an altitude connection too. They’ve also been found in people who dove 1,000 feet and others who participated in an Everest exploration.

3. Vertical lines, however, are generally not such a big deal. Some people are more genetically prone to them than others, but they’re commonly associated with aging.

4. When people lack iron, their nails can turn spoon-like. Instead of curving down and covering the finger normally, they ’ll start to rise up on the sides and front, like the part of a spoon that holds liquid.

5. Kidney and liver problems can create “half-and-half nails”, where one part of the nail is white and the other part dark or pink, according to Derick.

Doctors note that because disease diagnosis is complex and some symptoms can be associated with different diseases, you should always see a medical professional if you are concerned about something you notice.

1. What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Doctors can tell us something about our health by looking at our nails.
B.We should see a doctor if we find nails in bad condition.
C.A famous doctor in the USA conducted an interesting research.
D.If we don’t want to get ill, we need to clean and stop biting our fingernails.
2. If we don’t eat well or regularly, our fingernails may ________.
A.become harder than normal nails.
B.become thinner than normal nails.
C.become “half-and-half” nails.
D.have horizontal and vertical lines.
3. Who will have horizontal lines on the nails ?
A.A cancer patient who has received normal treatment.
B.Hungry African children suffering from severe malnourishment.
C.An explorer who had reached Zhangjiajie in Hunan Province.
D.A patient with serious illness, like kidney and liver problems.
4. Which of the following best describes the nails that show people lack iron?
A.The nails are thinner and more likely to break.
B.The nails will curve down and cover the fingers.
C.The nails will start to rise up on the sides and front.
D.The nails will change their colours on the surface.
