6 . Imagine your body is like the house you live in. Every day, your family creates rubbish. The rubbish builds up until it is put out for the weekly garbage collection.
Now, say you put three bags of garbage out, but because one of the collectors was away sick, only two bags are collected. You take the leftover bag inside to be put out again next week. The following week you put on another three bags, plus the leftover bag from last week. But again, only two bags are collected. Imagine this cycle is repeated over the following weeks.
This is a simple description of what happens to your body when your kidneys (肾脏) don’t work efficiently. Your body is not thoroughly emptied of waste products. Other areas of the body such as blood pressure and red blood cell production are affected and the insidious process that may lead to kidney failure begins.
It’s not uncommon for people to lose up to 90% of their kidney function before developing any symptoms. There may be no warning signs. This makes early detection (诊查)difficult.
Kidney ’s main job is to remove toxins (毒素) and unwanted water from our blood.Every day our kidneys clean an average of 200 litres of blood. Kidney failure may be a gradual and silent process, going unnoticed because there is no obvious pain.
Research shows that more than 35% of the patients requiring dialysis (透析) do not see a kidney specialist before they have to do so. Some risk factors for kidney disease such as age and genetic make-up are out of our control; however, some changes in lifestyle may help prevent kidney damage. Two major risk factors for kidney disease, diabetes (糖尿病) and high blood pressure, have been on the rise over the last few decades. Both conditions are chiefly affected by being overweight and not getting enough exercises, which are the potential (潜在的) risk factors for the kidney disease.

7 . One billion teenagers and young adults around the world risk losing their hearing by listening to loud music, according to the World Health Organization. The U. N. agency is asking young people to turn down the volume(音量) to prevent great damage to their hearing.
Many people believe the sound being louder is better if they are listening to rock and roll. But experiencing really loud music, even really good music, can have a serious effect on the hearing.
Studies in middle- and high-income countries show nearly 50 percent of teenagers and young adults aged 12 to 35 listen to unsafe levels of sound. They are listening on their personal audio devices as well as at concerts, nightclubs and other entertainment places.
But what is an unsafe level of sound?
The WHO says there can be many kinds of unsafe levels of sound. It depends on how loud the sound is and how long you listen to it. Unsafe levels of sound can mean noise levels of 85 decibels(分贝) for eight hours a day or 100 decibels for just 15 minutes.
Doctors say there are simple measures to protect people from unsafe sound levels. Young people who wear earplugs(耳塞) during concerts can enjoy music at 90 decibels as much as they can at 110 decibels. But they admit that earplugs may not look very cool. A common sense suggestion is to turn down the volume on their personal audio devices. The WHO also advises young people to limit their use of such devices to less than one hour a day. It reminds people to use their technology to stay safe. Smartphone apps can help t monitor safe listening levels.
The U. N. agency estimates 360 million people suffer hearing loss linked to many causes, including noise, genetic conditions, infectious diseases and aging. It notes half of all cases of hearing loss are avoidable.

10 . The ideal body is often presented as one with a stomach having no fat, or better yet, defined (棱角分明的) muscles.
Many have tried to reach that goal by exercising. Some change their diet or simply eat less. Now doctors at the University of Miami have created a new plastic surgery (塑身手术) process called abdominal etching, which could replace all that hard work.
The study followed 26 men and 24 women averagely aged 36, who already had a healthy diet and got some exercise, but all had unwanted stomach fat.
During the surgery, doctors removed fat from different parts of a body. Then they moved the fat around and etched (蚀刻) lines in the stomach to make them appear to be the outline of muscles. After the surgery, the patients appeared to have a muscular (肌肉发达的) stomach of a person who spends hours exercising every day.
Stomach fat is the hardest fat to lose on the body. It is deeper inside the body than leg or hip (臀部) fat, and it often increases with age. Recently, several non-surgical, fat-reducing processes called “body sculpting” have become popular in the United States. They include freezing fat or hitting it with radio waves. Both processes supposedly kill fat cells in the body. But they cannot get to that deep stomach fat that abdominal etching removes.
After the surgery, patients had to follow a lot of rules. They had to cover their surgery scars with pieces of tight foam (泡沫) for several weeks to keep the lines in place. They also needed to visit doctors regularly to check for problems. One month after the surgery, they still have to exercise every day and keep to a diet for up to six years.
