文章大意:本文是说明文。文章介绍了音乐对人们的好处,特别是音乐课程对语言理解能力的提升,甚至可能比阅读课程更有效。

1 . It’s hard to say why, but it’s just true: Music is good for you. It can calm your spirit and help you vent (发泄) your anger.     1    . But there’s one surprising yet well-documented effect that has really surprised people. Music lessons are very good for language comprehension — and they might even be better than reading lessons.

2    . But in this new study from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), researchers were able to see music lessons improve word comprehension right before their eyes. Led by Robert Desimone, the director of McGovern Institute for Brain Research, the team tested 74 children between the ages of four and five to see how their growing language skills were affected by piano lessons.

The 74 participants were divided into three groups.     3    . The other two had their weekly academic lessons supplemented with three 45-minute lessons per week — the first got piano lessons and the second took part in reading lessons.

What are the results? The ones who received a little extra learning every week outperformed those who just continued on with their normal studies.     4    . Perhaps even more surprisingly, the children who took the music lessons even outperformed the ones who took the reading lessons when it came to telling the difference between two words that were very similar.

“That’s a big thing for kids in learning language: being able to hear the differences between words,” Desimone said in a statement. “They really benefited from that.” To the researchers, the results point to one clear conclusion:     5

A.It can even be used to improve your memory.
B.It can bring people together and give us hope.
C.Music benefits students in multiple ways.
D.The control group simply carried on with their normal school classes.
E.Many studies have shown a close link between musical training and language skills.
F.If you’re a school administrator who wants kids to succeed, you’d better not cut those music lessons.
G.Even the ones who only took music lessons turned out to perform better on language puzzles than those who didn’t have extra lessons.

3 . How music boosts brain

Many people believe that learning an instrument contributes to better educational attainment, cognition (thinking) and intelligence scores in children. But does this musicality translate to better cognition later in life?

    1

A recent study investigated this question by asking middle-aged and older people to complete a questionnaire on their musical experience and complete cognitive tests. The results showed musical people had better memory and executive function (the ability to stay focused on tasks and control oneself). A good memory, important for playing a musical instrument, translates to people’s cognitive performance.     2    .

Continuing to play

3    . Currently, amateur musicians show the highest cognitive performance of participants. That’s because continuing to play an instrument brings continued brain health benefits. By contrast, having played an instrument for three years during childhood might not have that big an impact on our cognitive performance later in life.

The “Mozart effect”

The famous “Mozart effect” was based on a study published in 1993.     4    . Sadly, the current study found no association between listening to music and cognitive performance. Cognitive stimulation depends on being actively engaged in activities. Thus passively listening to music doesn’t seem to provide any cognitive benefits.

Study conclusions

Playing an instrument or singing seems to have benefits to our brain health in ageing, according to the study.     5    . The study provides no evidence for this yet and it is also not clear how the findings apply to the general population, since most people in the study were female, well-educated and well-off.

A.Better memory and musical people
B.Improving cognitive performance
C.Continued engagement in playing an instrument helps cognitive function
D.It showed that when played Mozart, students scored higher on intelligence tests
E.Similarly, executive function required when playing an instrument also improves it
F.Being musical without playing an instrument could also improve cognitive performance
G.What is yet to be established is whether this would also help prevent cognitive decline as we age

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章对音乐为什么总是会唤起人们的某些回忆进行了解释。

4 . It’s happened to all of us: a song comes on the radio, and we are immediately transported back to a time in our past.     1

There are a few things that connect tunes with our memories. Music is often a necessary element of many important life events, and it is also very effective in arresting our attention.     2     Besides, the emotional nature of music helps make it particularly memorable.

We often become familiar with a piece of music because we hear it as background music. The more familiar a piece of music is, the more effective it is in bringing back memories.     3     The reason is that we are far more likely to hear a song over and over again than to watch a film or a TV programme in the same way.

Tiffany Jenkins, writing for a culture column, has a different opinion:     4     She tells us how throughout history oral cultures have passed important knowledge from generation to generation through songs because of this characteristic. The rhythm (韵律) and rhyme in lines of songs all serve as memory aids.

5     This fact corresponds with what many experts call the “reminiscence bump (怀旧性记忆)”, where older adults (over forty) have increased recollection of events that occurred during their adolescence and early adulthood.

It’s clear that our memories and music are closely linked — to the point that music is being used to help Alzheimer’s disease sufferers access memories that they thought they had lost.

A.Familiarity is important.
B.Music itself is easy to remember.
C.But what makes music so effective in doing this?
D.Our musical preference usually forms during our teens.
E.This applies to music more than other cultural products.
F.Pop music especially can be connected with an important memory.
G.Music and these life events are likely to be linked together in our memories.

5 . Getting older means greater maturity and wisdom.     1     In a society that is aging fast, it has become crucial to find ways to prevent related mental and emotional disorders. Music emerges as a promising tool for promoting well-being of the elderly.

Music has a great power to cause strong emotions and intense pleasure.     2     singing and dancing to music with others is not only fun but also improves mood. Musical activities are great ways to reduce stress because they take our minds off problems. They also help us feel less lonely and more connected with other people.

3     A song may become a soundtrack for a particular time, such as a delightful party with friends that you had along time ago. Listening to that song allows you to remember all the happy memories from that time.

Finally, music contributes to keeping our thinking skills sharp. It makes our brains work hard in unique ways to understand the rhythm and melody.     4     For example, exposure to background music, particularly classical music, during cognitive (认知的) tasks is shown to improve older people’s cognitive processes, such as processing speed and working memory.

In conclusion, music is a powerful tool to fight against aging-related emotional and cognitive problems. It is an enjoyable and social activity, available to anyone regardless of their background or previous musical experience.     5

A.Music can also open forgotten doors to our memories.
B.Recalling happy memories can lift our mood on a bad day.
C.Even passive music listening can help elderly adults think better.
D.This helps people feel better when they are depressed or anxious.
E.However, it often involves a series of physical and mental challenges.
F.The ability to form new memories is essential for processing information.
G.Thus, this accessible intervention should become a major policy priority for healthy aging.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。语言和音乐在我们的文化中都扮演着重要的角色,两者有着多个相似之处;有书写系统,依附于各自的文化、能分享情感。

7 . How similar are language and music?

Language is part of our daily lives, no matter where we live in the world.     1     Both language and music play a huge role in our culture and here are some of their similarities.

Both language and music have a writing system.

In English we record language using the alphabet, which is a collection of letters. Similarly, we use notes (音符) to keep a record of music. Musicians read notes and create meaning in the form of music.     2     By writing pieces of text or music, we are able to share experiences through time. We can read the ideas or hear the composition (作品) of someone who lived hundreds of years ago.

    3

You can make a good guess at where someone is from by listening to the language he uses. In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, giving us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music and providing us with music for every situation.

Both share emotion.

4     Of course you may be able to see it in my face, but you will know for sure through my words. Similarly, music can sound angry, sad or happy. Music can show you exactly how the composer was or is feeling, and allows us to share that emotion. When you feel happy, you might want to sing and dance to a happy song to celebrate your happiness.     5     I think we have all used music to express or process our emotions, often combining it with language in the form of song lyrics (歌词).

A.Both are expressive.
B.Both vary with culture.
C.How do you know that I am angry?
D.We use language to express our thoughts.
E.Similarly, music is part of many people’s lives.
F.So just as you read English, you can read music.
G.In contrast, you probably also listen to sad music when you are feeling down.

8 . There are hundreds of genres (流派) of music, so while some might like one kind, others might like something completely different. Why do people like different kinds of music?

1     At the same time, music can also help us feel like part of a group or a culture, especially one that shares an interest in a certain kind of music.

Music can also be nostalgic, that is, it creates a kind of longing for the past. Musicians leave behind a footprint with their music.    2     Even long after the musicians are gone, people still find something in the musicians’ recordings that they can enjoy.

We may also find that the music we like is strongly tied to our memory. Maybe there was a song that someone sang to us when we were little that brings up good memories.     3

When we listen to music that we like, a chemical called dopamine is sometimes released in the brain, which can make us feel good.     4     There are some algorithms (算法) today that can help pick up on the kind of music we like. When we are streaming music, some programs will let us like or dislike songs.

People’s taste in music can remain the same in their whole life or it can change many times. But the truth is, we don’t know all the exact answers to why people like different kinds of music — or sports, or food, or colors.     5     We are all different people who like different things.

A.It’s music to our ears.
B.Music can be a part of our identity.
C.It becomes a mirror that we are holding up.
D.They leave a permanent mark in people’s lives.
E.Therefore, we might want to listen to a song on repeat.
F.Other times, we might find music can bring up sad memories.
G.There are lots of different factors that can influence our preferences.

10 . Before going to your first concert, there are a load of things you can do.

First of all, you are supposed to know that your first concert can be very tiring. You may have to wait in long lines and you will need to stand for the whole night too.     1     Try and make sure that you wear comfortable shoes.

It is of much significance to be familiar with the band, which will help you to maximize the amount of fun you can have when at the concert. Listen to the songs that are played beforehand. There are many ways that you can do this, and there are even sites that are devoted to their setlists as well.     2

3     Some may even knock or elbow you, but you have to keep in mind that they are not doing this on purpose. They may just be getting carried away. Try and keep cool. Generally, people who go to concerts are lovely but be prepared for a surplus of movement when you are in the crowd.

4     Wave your arms around, clap your hands and maybe sway a little. Try and enjoy yourself and forget about how tired you may be for a moment. If you can do this then you know that you can have the best time ever.

5     Whatever you’re looking for, to remember your first concert counts a lot. Memories may go away, but pictures will stay. If you are concerned about damaging your good camera, then invest in a disposable (一次性的) camera.

A.You may find people around you get crazy about the concert.
B.Take good care of your camera.
C.Remember that singing along with friends around you is one of the best experiences.
D.You need to make sure that you do your bit to participate.
E.You are supposed to put your camera in a safe place just in case.
