文章大意:本文是说明文。文章介绍了音乐对人们的好处,特别是音乐课程对语言理解能力的提升,甚至可能比阅读课程更有效。

2 . It’s hard to say why, but it’s just true: Music is good for you. It can calm your spirit and help you vent (发泄) your anger.     1    . But there’s one surprising yet well-documented effect that has really surprised people. Music lessons are very good for language comprehension — and they might even be better than reading lessons.

2    . But in this new study from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), researchers were able to see music lessons improve word comprehension right before their eyes. Led by Robert Desimone, the director of McGovern Institute for Brain Research, the team tested 74 children between the ages of four and five to see how their growing language skills were affected by piano lessons.

The 74 participants were divided into three groups.     3    . The other two had their weekly academic lessons supplemented with three 45-minute lessons per week — the first got piano lessons and the second took part in reading lessons.

What are the results? The ones who received a little extra learning every week outperformed those who just continued on with their normal studies.     4    . Perhaps even more surprisingly, the children who took the music lessons even outperformed the ones who took the reading lessons when it came to telling the difference between two words that were very similar.

“That’s a big thing for kids in learning language: being able to hear the differences between words,” Desimone said in a statement. “They really benefited from that.” To the researchers, the results point to one clear conclusion:     5

A.It can even be used to improve your memory.
B.It can bring people together and give us hope.
C.Music benefits students in multiple ways.
D.The control group simply carried on with their normal school classes.
E.Many studies have shown a close link between musical training and language skills.
F.If you’re a school administrator who wants kids to succeed, you’d better not cut those music lessons.
G.Even the ones who only took music lessons turned out to perform better on language puzzles than those who didn’t have extra lessons.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章讲述了语言和音乐在我们的文化中都扮演着重要的角色,两者有着多个相似之处;有书写系统,依附于各自的文化、能分享情感。

3 . How similar are language and music?

Language is part of our daily lives, no matter where we live in the world.     1     Both language and music play a huge role in our culture and here are some of their similarities.

Both language and music have a writing system.

In English we record language using the alphabet, which is a collection of letters. Similarly, we use notes (音符) to keep a record of music. Musicians read notes and create meaning in the form of music.     2     By writing pieces of text or music, we are able to share experiences through time. We can read the ideas or hear the composition (作品) of someone who lived hundreds of years ago.

    3

You can make a good guess at where someone is from by listening to the language he uses. In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, giving us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music and providing us with music for every situation.

Both share emotion.

4     Of course you may be able to see it in my face, but you will know for sure through my words. Similarly, music can sound angry, sad or happy. Music can show you exactly how the composer was or is feeling, and allows us to share that emotion. When you feel happy, you might want to sing and dance to a happy song to celebrate your happiness.    5     I think we have all used music to express or process our emotions, often combining it with language in the form of song lyrics (歌词).

A.Both are expressive.
B.Similarly, music is part of many people's lives.
C.So just as you read English, you can read music.
D.We use language to express our thoughts.
E.In contrast, you probably also listen to sad music when you are feeling down.
F.How do you know that I am angry?
G.Both vary with culture.

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章简要介绍了乐谱上的音乐术语及其相关历史。

4 . Have you ever tried reading music? If so, you probably noticed a lot of new symbols and words. Maybe you saw the word presto at the beginning. Perhaps you read piano and crescendo throughout the song.     1     Or maybe you didn’t — if you knew how to read Italian!

Italian is sometimes called the language that sings.     2     However, the link between Italian and music is deeper than that. Today, musical vocabulary is full of Italian words.

However, it wasn’t always so. Thousands of years ago, people didn’t write music. Instead, they passed songs down orally and taught each other to play them on instruments.     3     Later, people in Spain and Italy began putting music to paper for use in church choirs (教堂唱诗班).

Around 1000 CE, an Italian man named Guido d’ Arezzo came up with the four-lined staff (四线谱), which eventually led to the development of the five-lined staff still used in modern music today. Over the next few centuries, many of the people writing music were Italian. Of course, people in other parts of the world were writing music, too. In an effort to standardize written music, many of them used Italian terms.     4     For example, Beethoven sometimes used German words instead of Italian. Claude Debussy used French in “Clair de Lune”.

5     You might already be familiar with some terms! One example is tempo — the speed of a piece of music. Markings in written music tell the player when the music should be adagio (slow), or allegro (fast). The dynamics, or volume, of a piece of music might begin with piano (soft), then crescendo (get louder) and finally fortissimo (very loud).

A.Many think it sounds musical.
B.Others wrote music in their own languages.
C.Still, Italian is the primary language used in music.
D.You probably needed to ask your teacher what these words meant.
E.Learning to read music is an important part of practicing those skills.
F.People who write music even have ways to communicate techniques.
G.Ancient people in Babylonia, Greece, and Rome were some of the earliest to write music.

    4

Music is a great way for your child to meet new people and create lasting friendships. If they decide to take up music as an extracurricular (课外的) activity, they’ll be bonding with like-minded children who share their passion. In a time when children are increasingly interested in communicating online and focusing on digital skills, music is a refreshing return to face-to-face contact.

Bring about a sense of achievement

文章大意:本文为一篇说明文。文章讲述了跳舞对大脑的好处。

7 . Helena Blumen, a cognitive (认知的) scientist, says the complicated mental multi-tasking that dancing requires engages various parts of the brain at the same time, leading to the strengthening of neural (神经系统的) connections across different regions.     1    . “It’s socially, cognitively and physically demanding,” she says.

Anyone who’s ever felt the irresistible urge to dance to a favorite song knows that combining music and movement can lift your mood and melt away stress. But there’s a lot more happening in your brain when you’re trying to follow even the easiest choreography (编舞).     2    . Tasks like getting around the kitchen or walking to the bus stop can become more attainable if regarded as choreography.

To learn how the mechanisms of dancing work in the brain, researchers conducted MRI scans on older adults who engaged in either dance or a traditional exercise program over six months.     3    , the dancers grew more white and gray matter in the parts of the brain responsible for cognitive processes.

The researchers assume that these brain changes contribute to more neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to form new connections and pathways.     4    . Brain plasticity is similar to the city’s ability to build new roads, repair old ones or even change the direction of traffic based on how often the routes are used and what the city needs.

5    . A Finnish study of people with severe brain injuries showed that dance-based recovery might improve mobility, cognition and overall well-being. Additionally, research shows that dancing can reduce the risk of brain-related diseases such as dementia (痴呆).

A.Moreover, dancing can help prevent brain injuries
B.In addition to the physical and neurological benefits
C.The effect extends beyond dancing to the real world
D.While both groups improved their level of physical fitness
E.Dancing might even help people with brain injuries and diseases
F.Imagine your brain is like a city with loads of roads and pathways
G.Basically, dancing requires more brain power than commonly believed

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讨论了音乐在我们生活中的重要作用,探究了为什么音乐会让我们感觉如此良好,并介绍了音乐如何影响我们的大脑和情绪。

8 . Music plays an important role in our lives.     1     If you’ve created music or have found comfort in playing an instrument or listening to your favorite artist, you will be interested in the science behind why music makes us feel so good.

Unlike food, music isn’t necessary for our survival.     2     Music floods the brain with a chemical called dopamine (多巴胺), which is associated with pleasure, motivation and reward.

Studies have shown that certain pieces of classical music will have the same effect on everyone.     3     Of course, everyone is different and music will make us respond according to our own taste and familiarity. Yet, investigations have shown that some music will give people a universal experience.

Neuroscientists conducted research using PET scans to detect the release of dopamine in the brain when subjects listened to their favorite songs. They later used MRI to view the pleasure center of the brain where dopamine is released and then mapped out its connection with other areas of the brain.     4

The pleasure center of the brain predicts what kind of music we will enjoy based on the connection it makes to other parts of our brain.

New music fits into patterns already mapped out in the brain by our past musical tastes. It is pleasurable not only because it is familiar, but it is different just enough to feel new and exciting.     5     Broadening musical experience and taste can become a journey of self-discovery, for like any art form, in music we see our humanity.

A.Enjoying music is unique to humans.
B.They cause the same changes in the brain.
C.However, it is extremely rewarding and pleasurable.
D.It was these connections that were the most interesting revelation.
E.Music, therefore, can be used as a mood enhancer or as a motivator.
F.We can recall vivid memories and emotions when listening to music.
