4 . Ice hockey, including Para ice hockey (残奥会冰球), has been recognized by some as a “men’s sport” as it is a full-contact sport that involves lots of body checks. But on the International Women’s Day, many fans at the National Indoor Stadium waited for a female to get on the ice. And there she came.
By the end of the second period of the Para ice hockey game between China and Italy at the Beijing Paralympic Winter Games, Yu Jing of China was called onto the ice. Without any goal or assist, Yu completed her debut (首次比赛). “I think I did really well today,” said Yu with a bunch of flowers in her hands after the game. “This is a perfect gift for me on this special day.”
Poliomyelitis (小儿麻痹) caused disability in her left leg when Yu was very little, but it never stopped her passion for sports. In 2019, Yu took up Para ice hockey. However, the blade that supports the sledge is only three centimeters wide, which is very difficult for beginners to maintain their balance. But Yu was able to sit firmly on the sledge and slid slowly with the sticks the first time on the ice. “I got the confidence immediately,” Yu recalled, adding that fighting for her country on home soil was her biggest incentive.
All the injuries and difficulties didn’t stop Yu from chasing her Para ice hockey dream. She quit her job and turned professional at 36 years old. During training, Yu’s teammates encouraged her and taught her the skills. “Para ice hockey is a mixed competition that opens a door to females with disabilities. If males can do it, so can females,” Yu said. As the only female Para ice hockey player at Beijing 2022, the goal of inspiring more females with disabilities has already been accomplished.

7 . Thousands of runners did up their running shoes and poured out from the starting line while crowds cheered along the course. Marathons in China are picking up the pace again.
According to the Chinese Athletics Association, a total of 133 marathons across the country have been registered for the first six months of the year. On March 26, more than 300,000 runners took part in 26 marathon events nationwide, reported China Daily.
Teenagers have also taken part in marathons. Xu Qian, a 15-year-old from Suqian, Jiangsu, loves running. He got first place in the 5-kilometer Happy Run of the Jingdong Suqian Marathon held on April 2.
For Xu, the race meant months of training and preparation. He runs about 30 to 40 kilometers in local stadiums each week ahead of the run.
“Unlike the 800-meter run at school which is more about speed, a marathon tests a runner’s endurance (耐力) and psychological quality ,” he told Teens.
When he felt tired during the race, he told himself not to give up. “In long-distance running, the only opponent you have to beat is yourself,” Xu added.
Apart from one’s willpower, kindness from the audience also plays a big part in helping runners get to the finish line. Li Zhouzi from Shanxi took part in a 3-kilometer Kid Run of the Berlin Marathon in Germany in 2019 when she was 10. The support from the people cheering along the course really encouraged her.
“When things were hard, people from across the world cheered me on. Even if it was just the words, ‘keep it up’, it meant a lot to me and I was inspired to keep going to the end,” Li told Teens.
She believes that running a marathon is about staying focused on the final goal, not the suffering along the way. “Likewise, our life is also a marathon,” Li said.

8 . The Tokyo Olympics brought some of the fastest times ever seen on the track. At an astonishing number of races, athletes beat personal bests along with national, Olympic and world records. Elaine Thompson-Herah set a new Olympic record in the women’s 100 metres, breaking Florence Griffith Joyner’s record set over 33 years ago. World records were broken in both the men’s and women’s 400 metres hurdles, by Karsten Warholm and Sydney McLaughlin respectively.
Is this just an unusually good Olympics for record-breaking races or is something different going on? Part of the answer can be found by looking down at an athlete’s feet. If you look closely, you might spot some new technology known as “super spikes (钉鞋)”—and underfoot, there’s a high-tech track.
Recently, track spikes have seen a similar shift in the performance-improving technology that previously took over marathon racing shoes. Traditionally, track spikes have tried to lessen the amount of midsole foam(中底泡沫) to reduce weight and energy absorption. However, new technology is lightweight and the foam is better at returning energy to the athlete, giving back as much as 80 to 90 percent. In this way, the foam acts as a spring with each step the athlete takes.
Another new technology contributing to athletes’ speed in Tokyo is the track. While it may look like a regular track, Mondo, the company behind it, spent three years researching and developing the surface specifically for the Tokyo Olympics. The track has been precisely tuned to allow shock absorption and energy return, playing a similar role to the foam in spikes.
Additionally, the games being delayed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic may actually have benefited some athletes, giving them more time to train. Other factors, such as the weather, could affect how an athlete performs on any given day. And above all, we cannot ignore the effort and talent of the athletes competing in these races. It may just be that we have got a particularly talented crop this year.
