I entered my freshman year of high school with a philosophy: work hard and do whatever 1 could succeed at. I thought I would make some impressive achievements in this way. I wouldn’t waste my time on areas I was not good at.
And this philosophy served me well. I worked hard on my lessons and piano practice, which I had talent for, and got the results I wanted. usually in the shape of good grades and rewards. My friends laughed about my all-or-nothing attitude, but I thought it was the only sure path to success.
At the beginning of the second year of high school. I fully intended to keep the same attitude. Then I joined the school cross-country running team. a year after I had watched cross-country races. I joined mainly because my brother was on the team; he was entering his senior year, and I wanted to spend more time with him before he left for college. Also, many of my friends were on the team. and they had been trying to persuade me to join them for months.
When I came to the first practice. I was filled with optimism and dreamed of being an excellent runner. But as the distance we ran each practice gradually increased. I realized however hard I tried. I was the slowest on the team. And the muscle injury was often intolerable. What was the point of putting me through so much pain? I’d never be an excellent runner. For the first few weeks. I had been thinking of giving up.
Then we had our first cross-country meet. When we got off the bus at Lamoille High School. dressed in our blue uniforms with our team name shown on the shirts. the sight of the other teams warming up made me anxious. I thought I would let my team down. And I guessed my coach and teammates would be disappointed at my performance and blame me. This thought made me decide to quit the cross-country running team after the race.
Now. looking at the tough course made up of a series of short. steep(陡峭的)hills. I stood silently with my teammates.

5 . National Student Poets Program
The National Student Poets Program, the nation’s highest honor for young poets creating original work, is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Poetry Foundation, and the Academy of American Poets. Annually, five students are selected for one year of service, each representing a different geographic region of the country. The Program believes in the power of youth voices to create meaningful changes, and supports them in being heard.
HOW TO APPLY
The first step to becoming a National Student Poet is submitting poetry to the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. High school students who receive a Gold National Medal in poetry can apply for the National Student Poets Program.

Each year, National Student Poets act as youth poetry ambassadors, bringing poetry to their communities through individual service projects, April Poetry Month readings, and a variety of other opportunities, such as national poetry conferences and festivals.
As part of their Year of Service, each National Student Poet creates a community service project, letting more people in their regions know about the Program and making them concerned with issues and themes that hold special significance for the Poet.

7 . Zheng Qinwen announced herself as a major new force in women’s tennis with an import French Open debut (首秀) last month. Now the Chinese teenager hopes the fighting spirit she showed at the Grand Slam (大满贯) tournament can encourage kids starting out in the sport to chase their dreams on the court with the same determination.
“If tennis is your dream, I think you always have to fight for your dream. Because we only have one life, you shouldn’t have any regrets,” Zheng said last week in an interview.
The 19-year-old showed she possesses the talent to be a contender at the very top level of tennis with a breakout campaign at French Open.
Accounting for two-time Grand Slam winner Simona Halep along the way, Zhengs journey was ended in the fourth round by a three-set defeat to eventual champion Iga Swiatek. Zheng, though gave the Polish world No. 1 a big scare, battling back from 3-0 down in the first set to force, and win, a tiebreak (平分决胜局)。
“That was the first time I had played the world No.1, so I really wanted to grab this chance so I could judge her level and test myself,” said Zheng. “I didn’t want to give her the match so easy like that. It was pretty difficult for me to hold on in that match because of what my body was going through, but I wanted to show her I'm not easily beaten.
Looking back at Zheng Qinwen’s performances in this year’s French Open, there’s no doubt that she’s a true fighter. Zheng says she avoids being discouraged by higher-ranked opponents by simply focusing on the next point, one shot at a time.Supported by her team, she hopes she can one day win a Grand Slam title.
Zheng’s impressive French Open run has inevitably led to comparisons with China’s solitary Grand Slam singles championLi Na, who won the 2011 French Open and 2014 Australian Open titles.
“When I was a kid, Li Na showed that Asian people also can do something really good in tennis. She was the first one. I will just focus on my own game and then let’s see if I can really compete at the highest level,” said Zheng.

I failed again. It was the day of the big marathon. I had decided three years ago to train for the half-marathon event and take home a medal. There I sat, in front of my TV, while I watched others cross the finish line. It was just another in a long string of failures. I had never met a single weight loss or fitness goal and I was majoring in the art of failing.
We are a family with the spirit of exploration. We often plan active vacations. It seemed that on every vacation I was the one who couldn’t go the distance. Each time I urged my family, “Go on without me. Bring me lots of pictures and videos. I’ll be fine just sitting here taking in the view.” I lied. Sick of being left behind, I decided that it would never happen again. As a teenager, surely, there was still hope for me. I always spent weeks walking to prepare for our active vacations. I had lost weight many times. I just always seemed to fail to get where I needed to be.
But this time I would do something different. I was going to walk a half marathon. Surely I would lose weight and get in shape if I could complete over 12 miles in four hours. Be-sides, this would be training. Training sounded cooler than diet and exercise. I was excited and ready to go. I bought the proper equipment and clothing, checked out what type of drinks would be handed out at the marathon and prepared a lot. I had a plan!
