文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一些有助于表现自信的肢体语言。

1 . Body language can reflect our confidence level.     1     and another way when we’re nervous. At a glance (看一眼), most people can tell if we’re confident or not. So we should learn some tips to show confidence through body language so that we always appear confident and ready.

    2

The first tip to show confidence with body language is to keep your hands out of your pockets. We often put our hands in our pockets when we’re unsure of ourselves. And that’s how other people will view us.

Keep your eyes forward

3    , it often feels natural to lower your head slightly and watch your step. However, this gesture communicates to others that you don’t want to interact. And if you’re not careful, you might get into the habit of doing it all the time. So keep your head up and your eyes forward, even when you’re walking down the street by yourself.

Smile

Try this as an experiment: Smile at someone as you pass by them on the street or walk around the office.     4    . Now wouldn’t you like to have that effect on people all the time?

Firm handshakes

There are few things worse than reaching out your hand during an introduction and getting a handshake which is not firm enough. Don’t be that guy. Instead, hold the other person’s hand firmly and confidently. Of course, a handshake is not a contest.     5    .

A.Take wide steps
B.Avoid your pockets
C.It’s very likely that they’ll smile back
D.When you’re walking anywhere by yourself
E.Don’t try to hold the other person’s hand too long
F.If you want to show confidence with body language
G.We stand and walk a certain way when we’re confident

2 . When it comes to making a good impression, you can say all the right things. But it won’t be helpful until they are accompanied with the right body language.

1    . Weak handshakes can make you seem anything but confident. Your handshake should be firm but not too tight, because you won’ t impress anyone by giving them a painful hand.

Pay attention to how much you’re blinking (眨眼).     2    . If you find yourself blinking a lot, try to slow it down.

Maintain a proper amount of eye contact. By maintaining eye contact with the persons you’re talking to — or meeting for the first time — you’re letting them know that you’re paying attention to what they are saying. Eye contact is good.     3    .

Keep your hands quiet. When you are nervous, it’s common for you to keep touching things with your hands.     4    . They can make you seem anxious or unsure of yourself.

Talk with your hands, if it’s appropriate! If you’re enthusiastic about something you re speaking about, feel free to gesture. Just don’t overdo it.

Widen your stance. If you want to appear confident when you’re meeting someone, stand your ground! If you keep your feet close together, or crossed, you re more likely to be considered nervous or insecure.     5    . It will show everyone around you that you feel sure of yourself.

A.Shake hands properly
B.Instead, stand with your feet apart
C.Rapid blinking can make you look nervous
D.Feel free to casually look at something else
E.But nonstop staring can make the speaker feel uncomfortable
F.Not only are you paying attention, but you’re interested in it as well
G.So avoid touching your hair or adjusting your clothing too frequently

3 . 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

While the key to success in both     1     (person) and professional relationships lies in your ability     2     (communicate) well, it’s not the words that you use     3     your body language that speaks the loudest.

Whether you’re aware     4     it or not, when you interact with others, you’re continuously giving and receiving wordless signals. All of your nonverbal     5     (behavior) — the gestures you make, your tone of voice and how much eye contact you make — send strong messages. They can build trust and draw others towards you, or they can confuse     6     you’re trying to express. These messages don’t stop when you stop speaking, either. Even when you’re silent, you’re still communicating nonverbally.

In some instances, what comes out of your mouth and what you communicate through your body language may be two     7     (total) different things. If you say one thing, but your body language says something else, your listener will likely feel that you’re being dishonest. When faced with such     8     (mix) signals, the listeners have to choose whether to believe your verbal or nonverbal messages. Since body language is a natural language that     9     (show) your true feelings and intentions, they’ll likely choose the nonverbal messages.

However, by improving how you understand and use nonverbal communication, you can express what you really mean, connect better with others, and build stronger, more     10     (reward) relationships.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一项研究表明,有些身体姿势有助于学生在学校感觉更好。

5 . We all know that a powerful body posture (姿势) may help people feel more confident. But will it work on students? A new study by researchers from the Martin Luther University (MLU) of Halle-Wittenberg is carried out to find the connection. And it does provide evidence that simple body postures can help students feel better in school.

Some body postures don’t need further explanation. When a man sits with his arms crossed behind his head, resting his feet on a table, he is probably feeling very self-confident. Arms folded in front of one’s body and a bent back, on the other hand, typically mean anxiety and insecurity (不安全感). “Body language is not just about expressing feelings, it can also have a great influence on how a person feels,” explains Robert Körner from the Institute of Psychology at MLU.

Research on powerful body postures tries to find out the extent to which a certain body posture might influence a person’s feelings and self-confidence. Up to now, most of the research has been about studying the effects on adults. Körner’s study is the first to examine children. “Children from the age of five are able to recognize and understand the body postures of others,” the professor adds.

The researchers carried out their experiment with 108 fourth graders. One group was to assume (装出) two open postures for one minute each. The other group posed with their arms folded in front of them and their heads down. The children then finished a series of psychological tests. The children who had assumed an open posture showed better moods and reported higher self-confidence than the children in the other group. The effects were particularly manifest when it came to questions concerning school. “Here, powerful body postures had the strongest effect on the children’s self-confidence,” says Körner.

“Teachers could try and see whether this method helps their students.” However, Körner states that expectations about this technique should be mild. The effects were only short-term. Serious problems or mental illness must be treated by trained professionals.

1. Which of the following shows a person may feel uneasy according to Paragraph 2?
A.One rests his head on the table.
B.One seldom moves his feet in a conversation.
C.One folds his arms before his body with a bent back.
D.One crosses his arms behind his head and lies on the sofa.
2. What is the new research on powerful body postures mainly about?
A.What the most popular postures are.
B.How children’s postures differ from adults’.
C.Why body language can express a person’s feelings.
D.What effects postures have on students’ feelings.
3. What does the underlined word “manifest” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Strange.B.Obvious.C.Unclear.D.Manageable.
4. What is Körner’s attitude to teachers’ applying the findings in teaching?
A.Worried.B.Doubtful.C.Objective.D.Supportive.

7 . Body language, sometimes called "non-verbal communication", is an important tool. The way you communicate through body language can determine your success in everything from relationships to your career. Up to 93% of communication can be non-verbal. Paying closer attention to the messages you send through body language can help you succeed.     1

Have good posture(姿势).If you go to a job interview and you have bad posture? you'll probably register more poorly to the interviewer. People will associate bad posture with weak confidence or boredom.     2     To have good posture, your head should be up and your back should be straight. Sit down the front of your chair and lean forward slightly to show you're interested.

Mirror another person. Mirroring is when one partner copies the posture of the other partner.     3     Specifically? you can mirror a person's tone or position of the body. You shouldn't do this obviously or repeatedly though, only skillfully.

Emphasize your point with gestures. Have more than one gesture.     4     If you want to ensure you're not misunderstood, repeat helpful gestures when you speak the idea aloud. You don't have to use a body language gesture (or two) for every word, but it's good to have a toolbox of gestures you can use to reinforce(强化)important but easily misunderstood concepts.

5    Watch for wandering eyes and constant sniffing. If you're constantly touching your face, you'll never look confident or at ease. Improving your posture and working to reduce nervous tics (抽搐)can be difficult and will take time, but you'll quickly improve your overall non-verbal communication.

A.Use hand gestures when speaking.

8 . Body Language Mistakes You Should Avoid at Work

Communication is not only about words but also gestures. Therefore, you should be careful about how you use your body when expressing yourself.

Avoiding eye contact (接触).

When speaking with a workmate, avoiding eye contact makes you look unprofessional (不专业的). It also shows that you are not confident or show no interest in the topic.     1

Crossing your arms.

Crossing your arms shows that you are not open to others and that you want to defend yourself. This is generally considered as a position of defence.     2

    3

Checking the time every few minutes makes people feel you are in a hurry or would rather be somewhere else. It looks like you are not interested in being there. Therefore, when you are speaking to your workmates, try not to look at the clock very often.

Bad body postures.

Having a bad posture such as dropped shoulders or a lower neck can mean that you are not interested in what is going on around you. It is important to stand or sit up straight when speaking to somebody.     4

Weak handshake.

A weak handshake means that you don’t care much about the person you are shaking hands with.     5     However, don’t forget that a handshake that is too firm can be impolite. Therefore, try to find the right balance.

A.Checking the time.
B.Also, keep your head high.

9 . Much meaning can be conveyed clearly with our eyes, so it is often said that eyes can speak.

1    In a bus you may look at a stranger, but not for too long. And if he sensed that you are staring at him, he may feel uncomfortable.

The same is true in our daily life. If you are stared at for more than necessary, you will look at yourself up and down to see if there is anything wrong with you.     2    . Eyes do speak, right?

Looking too long at someone may seem to be rude and aggressive.    3    . If a man stares at a woman for more than 10 seconds and refuses to look away from her, his intentions are obvious. He wishes to attract her attention, and let her know that he is admiring her.

However, when two persons are engaged in a conversation, the speaker will only look into the listener’s eyes from time to time to make sure that the listener does pay attention to what the former is speaking.    4     If a speaker looks at you continuously when speaking as if he is trying to control you, you will feel awkward. A poor liar usually exposes himself by looking too long at the victim.

5     On the contrary, it will give him away.

Actually, eye contact should be made based on specific relationship and situation.

10 . Mirroring body language is a way to bond and to build understanding. It is a powerful tool that we use without even knowing it.

The most obvious forms of mirroring are yawning and smiling. When you see someone yawn, you are likely to yawn immediately. Smiling is also pretty contagious-seeing a smiling person makes you want to smile too.

Mirroring body language is a nonverbal way to say “I am like you, I feel the same”. Research shows that people who experience the same feelings are likely to trust, understand and accept each other.

Women have the natural ability to pick up and understand body signals. Therefore, it is not surprising that a woman is more likely to mirror another woman than a man is to mirror another man. That's why women are regarded as better talkers, even if they might not really have more close friends.

It is interesting that when a man tries to mirror a woman's body language while she is talking, he may seem to her as caring, intelligent and attractive.

Mirroring body language is an excellent way to build trust and understanding quickly. If you want to set up a connection with a new person, mirror his or her gestures, sitting position, tone of voice and talking pace. This will make them feel that there is something about you that they like.

While mirroring body language gains you acceptance, you still need to take into consideration your relationship with the person you are mirroring. If you are in a lower social position and are mirroring the body language of your boss, he will view you as arrogant. However, if you want to defeat those who are trying to prove superior to you, mirroring their body language will help defeat them and change their position.
