1 . Leo has always been my closest and constant companion these past five years. In fact, he is very friendly to me especially when I take care of other furry friends in our shelter.

There have been a lot of forest fires during the summer season. Not far from our shelter, a forest caught fire during this hot summer. Leo rushed towards the forest where flames send out a terrible heat. There’s no longer any hope at the moment to wait for Leo to come back to the shelter. In fact, I was waiting for the firemen to announce me his death in the forest. Suddenly, a fireman burst into my office and informed me that my dog Leo succeeded in saving four cats which were trapped by the flames. Leo seized the kittens, one by one moving them to a safe place.

I immediately accompanied the fireman to the forest to pick up the rescued kittens, but Leo was not there. Then we heard the sound of a dog came from the forest barking furiously. The firemen followed the tracks of the dog until they found him barking loudly by the side of an injured fireman who was lying on the ground.

That day, I was very proud of Leo for his two heroic actions. I paid a visit to the fireman accompanied with my adorable Leo. What a memorable scene when the fireman hugged Leo tightly to his chest! “One thousand thanks, Leo, for saving my life,” the fireman said.

3 . I suddenly heard an elephant crying as though frightened. Looking down, I immediately recognized that something was wrong, and ran down to the edge of the near bank. There I saw Ma Shwe with her three-month-old calf (幼崽) struggling in the fast-rising water, and it was a life-and-death struggle. Her calf was floating and screaming with fear. Ma Shwe was as near to the far bank as she could get, holding her whole body against the rushing water, and keeping the calf pressed against her huge body. Every now and then the rushing water would sweep the calf away.

There was a sudden rise in the water and the calf was washed clean over the mother’s body and was gone. Ma Shwe turned quickly to reach it and pressed the calf with her head and trunk (象鼻) against the rocky bank. Then with a huge effort, she picked it up in her trunk and tried until she was able to place it on a narrow shelf of rock.

Just at this moment she fell back into the river. If she were carried down, it would be certain death. I knew, as well as she did, that there was one spot where she could get up the bank, but it was on the other side from where she had put her calf.

While I was wondering what I could do next, I heard the sound of a mother’s love. Ma Shwe had crossed the river and got up the bank and was making her way back as fast as she could, roaring (吼叫) all the time, but to her calf it was music.

1. The moment the author got down to the river bank he saw _______,
A.Ma Shwe was placing the calf on the rock
B.Ma Shwe was holding the calf against the rushing water
C.the calf was washed away by the rising water
D.the calf was about to fall into the river
2. How did Ma Shwe manage to save her calf from the fast-flowing water?
A.By putting it on a safe spot.B.By pressing it against her body.
C.By taking it away with her.D.By carrying it on her back.
3. How did the calf feel about the mother elephant’s roaring?
A.It was a musical note.B.It was a sign of danger.
C.It was a call for help.D.It was a great comfort.
4. What can be the best title for the text?
A.A Deadly RiverB.A Matter of Life and Death
C.A Mother’s LoveD.A Brave Act

The polar bear is found in the Arctic Circle and some big land masses as far south as Newfoundland. While they are rare north of 88°, there is evidence     1     they range all the way across the Arctic, and as far south as James Bay in Canada. It is difficult to figure out a global population of polar bears as much of the range has been     2    (poor) studied; however, biologists calculate that there are about 20,000-25,000 polar bears worldwide.

Modern methods     3     tracking polar bear populations have been employed only since the mid-1980s, and are expensive     4    (perform) consistently over a large area. In recent years some Inuit people in Nunavut     5    (report) increases in bear sightings around human settlements, leading to a     6    (believe) that populations are increasing. Scientists have responded by     7    (note) that hungry bears may be congregating(聚集) around human settlements, leading to the illusion(错觉) that populations are     8    (high) than they actually are. Of     9     nineteen recognized polar bear subpopulations, three are declining, six     10    (be) stable, one is increasing, and nine lack enough data.

5 . 阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

A class pet can be an invaluable experience for elementary school children. The pet can teach responsibility, build a connection to the classroom, serve as a motivator, and be something for the children to love. If the teacher is willing to take on the added responsibility of caring for an animal in addition to all of the children in the classroom, a class pet can be a wonderful addition to a class.

Many factors need to be taken into consideration when choosing a class pet. It cannot be too big, as classrooms generally have limited space. Cost should also be considered since the teacher will likely have to pay for the pet, its food and its habitat. It must also be somewhat hardy (耐寒的). Each particular type of animal has its advantages and disadvantages, and a teacher must weigh these and make a decision about which one is right for his or her class.

Birds are physically more delicate (娇养) than many other animals. They will not survive in drafts (气流) and need a somewhat regulated temperature in their environment. Many birds are quite social and do best with other birds or when being handled routinely by people who can be appropriate with them. Young children are not likely to have the skill to handle a bird without harming it, making it a poor choice for a class pet.

Some reptiles are beautiful to look at but are delicate, afraid of cold, light sensitivity or poisonous and shouldn’t be handled by children. Others are more hardy but require expensive habitats. Most snakes eat rats and mice, which may be a frightening thing for small children to witness.

A hardy fish, such as a betta, is a good low-cost option for a class pet. They are obviously not huggable or able to be caught by children. Besides, they are inexpensive, have relatively long life spans, and can be kept in a simple fish bowl.

6 . While elephants born without tusks (长牙)are not unheard of,they normally form just 2 to 6 percent of the population. However, that is not the case at Mozambique’s Gorongosa National Park, where an astonishing 33 percent of female elephants born after the country’s civil war ended in 1992 are tuskless. While that may appear to be just a coincidence, Joyce Poole, an elephant behavior expert, has another theory. The researcher thinks we may be witnessing unnatural evolution of the species due to the constant hunting of elephants for valuable ivory.

Poole says before the country’s 15-year-long civil war, the 100,000-acre park was home to over 4,000 elephants. However, by the time the conflict ended in 1992, about 90 percent of them had been killed for ivory to help finance weapons (武器)and meat to feed the soldiers. Of the less than 200 survivors, over 50 percent of adult females had no tusks. Therefore, it is not surprising that the park’s tuskless elephant population has grown greatly.

This is not the first time researchers have observed a great change in the population of elephants. At Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park and Lupande Game Management Area, areas which were heavily hunted in the 1970s and 1980s, 35% of elephants 25 years or older and 13% of those younger than 25 are now without tusks. A 2008 study published found that the number of tuskless females at the Ruaha National Park in Tanzania went from 10.5 percent in 1969 to almost 40 percent in 1989, largely due to illegal hunting for ivory.

The recent ban on ivory in both the US and China should help get rid of, or at least reduce, elephant hunting. However, scientists are not sure how long it will take for elephants with a higher rate of tuskless females, to change the trend.

1. What is the probable cause of the phenomenon mentioned in Paragraph 1 ?
A.Illegal hunting.B.Constant farming.
C.A pure coincidence.D.Natural evolution.
2. Why did people kill so many elephants during the civil war in Mozambique?
A.To get funds by selling ivory.
B.To develop new weapons.
C.To provide food for local people.
D.To make ivory products.
3. Which of the following had the earliest record on tuskless elephants?
A.Gorongonsa National Park.
B.South Luangwa National Park.
C.The Ruaha National Park.
D.Lupande Game Management Area.
4. What does the underlined phrase “the trend” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.Elephants facing greater danger.
B.Elephants growing more slowly.
C.Fewer female elephants staying alive.
D.More female elephants being tuskless.

7 . The hemlock(铁杉) trees along the Wappinger Creek, New York, look healthy. However, scientist Gary Lovett says the white balls which provide protection for the bugs are created by a tiny insect. It’s hard to believe the tiny bug could kill a tree. However, trees can end up with millions and millions of the pests. When there are that many, it ends up killing the tree.

The bug from East Asia is slowly killing trees across the USA. The trouble-making bug is just one of many invasive(入侵的) pests that have slipped into the United States. They can hurt other living things in their new home.

Many invasive pests arrive on wooden pallets(运货板) piled inside shipping containers. They support and separate goods, and keep them from sliding around. Invasive pests often tunnel into the pallets.   How can we stop pests from riding on pallets? Lovett says new rules are needed. The companies that make pallets don’t want more rules. Congress has added an amendment(修正案) in the 2018 Farm Bill to try and prevent this problem. However, Lovett is not hopeful it will make much of a difference. Pallets are checked by inspectors. Many are sprayed with bug-killing pesticide. “I believe in the system,” said Brent McClendon, president of The National Wooden Pallet and Container Association. He also said shipping containers are checked very carefully.

Still, each year 13 million containers are shipped to the U. S. Each is full of wooden pallets. Lovett says: “Inspectors can’t possibly check everything. All it takes are a few bad pallets; we should get rid of wooden pallets.” He believes pallets should be made of plastic or eco-composite wood. Eco-composite wood is a mix of wood fiber and plastic. Insects cannot hide into it. One problem is that these choices cost more. They may be worth the extra money, though. Invasive pests cost the U.S. $5 billion a year. Trees don’t just die in forests. They also die in cities and our yards. Then, they need to be replaced. That costs money, too.

1. All the statements are TRUE except that ________.
A.pesticide has been applied to bug-killing
B.invasive pests are native to Wappinger Creek
C.invasive pests hide in pallets used in shipping
D.the companies making pallets don’t want more rules
2. What can we infer from the passage?
A.Bugs can be easily spotted by eyes.
B.Bugs ruin the shipping goods slowly.
C.Even tiny bugs could be a threat to a tree.
D.Bugs cover trees with white soft balls to protect tress.
3. Why does Gary Lovett want to get rid of wooden pallets?
A.Because insects mostly die in them.
B.Because plastic pallets are eco-friendly.
C.Because they are not worth extra money.
D.Because they are the major pest carriers.
4. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.Invasive pests are harming plants in the USA.
B.Effective measures have stopped the pest invasion.
C.Congress contributes a lot to dealing with invasive pests.
D.Ecosystem in the USA is poorly damaged by invasive woods.

9 . Most dog owners are convinced that their four-legged friends know exactly what they mean when they use certain words like sit, stay or treat. However, researchers have always wondered whether dogs really understand human speech or if they rely on other information to get the meaning. For example, does the word“fetch”form a picture of a stick or ball in the dog’s mind,or does the dog bring back the object based on the owner’s voice or gesture? A new study by scientists at Atlanta’s Emory University seems to indicate that“man’s best friend”does indeed know what the owner is saying.

The researchers began by asking the owners of twelve dogs of various kinds to train their pets to identify two toys of different materials, such as a toy animal and a ball.Once the dogs had mastered the task, they took turns inside a special scanner. The owners then tested their dog’s language skill by first calling out the names of the toys they had been trained to recognize and then saying meaningless words such as“bobbu”and“bodmick”while holding up random objects the dogs hadn’t seen before.

The scans suggested that the parts of the dogs’ brains responsible for processing of sounds showed different brain patterns when they heard words they were familiar with, compared with the ones they had never heard before. While that was not enough to prove that the dogs were picturing their toys when they heard the word,it did indicate some sort of recognition. The researchers believe this is an important step forward in understanding how dogs process language.

Even more interesting was that the dog’s brains showed a higher level of neural(神经)activity at the sound of unknown words. This is the exact opposite of what happens in human brains, which get more active at the sound of familiar words. The researchers say the dogs may become cheerful at the sound of new words to try to understand them in the hope of delighting their masters.“Dogs want to please their owners, and perhaps also receive praise or food,”says Empty neuroscientist Gregory Burns, senior author of the study.

However, though your pet may understand human speech, the scientists recommend using visual signals and smell for training.“When people want to teach their dog a trick, they often use spoken command because that’s what humans prefer,”Prichard says.“From the dog’s view, however,a visual command might be more effective, helping the dog learn the trick faster.”

1. What’s the purpose of the new study?
A.To convince dog owners to understand their dogs.
B.To advise dog owners to treat their dogs kindly.
C.To prove dogs follow owners’order by listening.
D.To test out how dogs get information from owners.
2. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 2?
A.Inform the result of the research.B.State the process of the research.
C.Stress the importance of the research.D.Introduce the subjects of the research.
3. How do human brains and dog brains react to words ?
A.Human brains become active at unfamiliar words.
B.Dog brains become delighted at unfamiliar words.
C.Human brains are not sensitive to familiar words.
D.Dog brains show no response to familiar words.
4. What do scientists advise the owners to do in dog training?
A.Give dogs oral command.B.Teach dog new tricks.
C.Involve sight and smell.D.Encourage faster learning.

10 . Organic(有机的)farming is a type of agriculture that benefits from the recycling and use of natural products. Use of dried plants not only saves money, but also ensures the growth of crops. The technique is characterized by the use of green manure(肥料), biological pest control methods and special farming techniques to keep soil productive. Limiting the use of man-made chemicals or completely doing away with them reduces the risk of diseases. Today, organic farming is a major and preferred industry around the world. Organically grown food products have a huge market, with farmlands covering about 10% of the total world-farmland cover. The hard work of Sir Albert Howard the Father of Organic Farming has paid off.

Advantages of Organic Farming

(1)The economics of organic farming are characterized by increasing profits through reduced water use and reduced soil erosion(侵蚀).

(2)Organic farming produces the same crops as those produced through traditional farming methods, but uses half the energy, and holds 40% more top soil

(3)Farming the organic way enables farmers to get rid of weeds without the use of any chemicals.

(4)The use of green pesticides(杀虫剂) is environmentally friendly and does no harm to human's health.

Disadvantages of Organic Farming

(1)Organic methods of farming produce less, compared to traditional farming techniques.

(2)Organic agriculture does little to fight global climate change.Though organic farming practices are recognized as giving out less CO2,but not to a significant degree.

However, though there are some disadvantages of organic farming, farms where organic methods for cropping have been used have more advantages than traditional farms.Organic agriculture is surely better in the long term.

1. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 shows that Sir Albert Howard ____.
A.worked hard for nothing
B.succeeded in organic farming
C.spent all his time on organic farming
D.didn't expect organic farming to be successful
2. According to the passage, compared to traditional farming organic farming ____.
a. is more environmentally friendly
b. produces a lot more food
c. uses less energy
d. results in more weeds in the farmland
e. is better for human's health
A.abcB.acd
C.aceD.bce
3. The author's attitude towards organic farming is ____.
