文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了很大一部分鸟类正处于危险之中——它们的栖息地或家园正在消失。

1 . Scientists say a huge percentage of bird species are in danger because their habitats, or homelands, are disappearing.

Traditional migration paths take birds through countries that are not protecting the places for birds to stop, rest and feed. The scientists studied the migration or flight paths of almost 1,500 species. They decided that 91 percent of them passed through dangerous areas.

The major danger for migratory birds is development. Buildings and pavements have covered the places where birds stop and feed as they move from one part of the world to another. One of the scientists who worked on the study says “Many of these important places have been lost to land reclamation because of urban, industrial and agricultural land expansion”.

The problem, according to scientists, is that many of these small birds die along their migration paths because they don’t have a safe place to feed and rest. There is no place to restore their energy for the next part of their journey. Countries in North Africa, Central Asia and those along the coasts of East Asia are having the most difficult time in protecting land. The scientists say these countries do not have enough areas that are safe for birds. One species that doesn’t exist now is the Eskimo curlew. “Our world gets poorer every time we lose a species,” one of the scientists says.

The researchers say countries need to work together and come up with safe stopping areas for birds that pass through their boundaries. For example, one country might have preserved safe zones for migrating birds. But a neighbor country might not. A bird might die.

One scientist who is not connected with the report tells Los Angeles Times that while some habitats are changing, more work can be done to make urban areas safe for birds.

He says small changes, like planting more native plants or keeping cats out of the areas birds would be likely to use, could make a big difference.

1. What mainly caused the disappearing of birds’ habitats?
A.The decrease of awareness to protect birds.B.Natural disasters.
C.Overuse of land by human beings.D.The rising sea level.
2. What may be the main reason for many birds’ death on the way of migration?
A.Tiredness and hunger.B.Beast attack on the ground.
C.Hunting of humans.D.The long journey.
3. According to the last two paragraphs, how should we protect the migrating birds?
A.By keeping fewer cats or dogs.
B.By restoring their destroyed habitats.
C.By helping change the birds’ migration paths.
D.By preserving the ecological environments on their migration paths.
4. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A.To call on people to protect the birds’ habitats.
B.To analyze the reasons for disappearing of birds’ habitats.
C.To offer some solutions to the problem of birds’ habitats.
D.To tell us a huge percentage of bird species are in danger.

2 . On the island of New Zealand there is a grasshopper-like species of insect that is found nowhere else on earth. New Zealanders have given it the nickname weta which is a native Maori word meaning “god of bad looks”. It’s easy to see why anyone would call this insect a bad-looking bug. Most people feel disgusted at the sight of these bulky(笨重的),slow-moving creatures.

Wetas are natural creatures; they come out of their caves and holes only after dark. A giant weta can grow to over three inches long and weigh as much as 1.5 ounces. Giant wetas can hop up to two feet at a time. Some of them live in trees and others live in caves. They are very long-lived for insects and some adult wetas can live as long as two years. Just like their cousins grasshoppers and crickets wetas are able to “sing” by rubbing their leg parts together or against their lower bodies.

Most people probably don’t feel sympathy for these endangered creatures but they do need protecting. The slow and clumsy wetas have been around on the island since the times of the dinosaurs and have evolved and survived in an environment where they had no enemies until rats came to the island with European immigrants. Since rats love to hunt and eat wetas the rat population on the island has grown into a real problem for many of the native species that are unaccustomed to its presence and poses a serious threat to the native weta population.

1. How can wetas produce pleasant sounds?
A.By rubbing their body parts.B.By coming out only at might.
C.By moving slowly on the ground.D.By hopping up to two feet at a time.
2. What happens to wetas now?
A.They are increasing in number.B.They are decreasing in number.
C.They are very active in the daytime.D.They have a short life for insets.
3. What does the underlined word "its" in the last paragraph mean?
A.the dinosaur'sB.the weta'sC.the island'sD.the rat's
4. Where is the text most probably taken from?
A.A literature magazine.B.A travel guide.
C.A business journal.D.A biology textbook.

3 . One afternoon, while staying with friends at their house there, my husband and I decided to go for a walk along the traffic-free country road in the area. We met a beautiful Golden Retriever. He seemed exceptionally friendly so we stopped to play with him, throwing a stick which he retrieved(取回)several times happily. When we continued our walk, he followed us. I couldn't deny that we were enjoying his company.

After about twenty minutes, we found ourselves walking along a dirt road in an unfamiliar area. One house, almost hidden by tall trees, seemed somehow strange. I wanted to get as far away from that place as possible.

Just then, the door to the house opened and five dogs rushed out, barking as they ran toward us. I felt terrified and couldn't move. All of a sudden, our new friend appeared between the dogs and us. He faced them-all five of them-barking and baring his teeth. I was amazed to see the attacking dogs stop in their tracks ten feet away from him. Our protector held them there while we escaped.

At a safe distance, we looked back and saw the five dogs heading back toward their house. But the Golden Retriever was nowhere in sight. I felt an ache in my heart; I missed our friend already.

With a feeling of emptiness, we made our way back to the house, hoping the whole way that we would see him again. But it was not to be.

When I told our friend about the encounter, her eyes flew wide open as she exclaimed, "It was an angel!"

To this day I have no doubt, A four-legged angel protected us.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Catherine Svilicic never would have guessed her adopted rescue clog Khan would act out with aggression (攻击性) towards her young 17-month-old baby, Charlotte!

The day began with the usual playtime outside. Although baby Charlotte had her parents watching from a distance, they did not notice anything out of the ordinary. Charlotte and the new dog had been making a habit of playing like this. However, things were different that day. Catherine watched as Khan threw her baby across their backyard! Why was Khan acting as though a lovely child was a threat? Catherine watched him drag her child, hoping he would stop. Sadly, it seemed Catherine needed to immediately intervene because this was only the beginning. He tightly clenched his jaws (咬紧牙关) into her diaper (纸尿裤) to throw her back and forth. This is when things got out of hand. Certainly, Catherine was angry with Khan for throwing her girl. However, something deep down told Catherine there was more to this than what they were seeing. Little did she know, these doubts would turn out to be true.

But her baby was still in great danger. Catherine noted that her baby seemed a target. That moment we mentioned when the dog sunk his teeth into Charlotte’s diaper and used his strength to throw her baby like “a doll”. How terrifying! Luckily, those teeth did not go near her skin and especially face and the baby was actually quite calm. Perhaps, the baby understood something about Khan’s intentions.

Catherine knew that she needed to act fast and catch her poor child. Something happening to Khan next that confused the whole family.

While the baby stayed calm, others could not help but panic. Charlotte’s mother said, “Had I not seen it with my very own eyes, I’d never have believed it.” Therefore, she ran to Charlotte and carried her to safety.

8 . A recent survey in the United States showed that the average family spent more money on its pets than on its children. Although rather shocking, it should not surprise anyone who has seen the doggy parlors(客厅) where loved pets rest. Are Americans unique in treating their little friends in this way? No, the English, too, pay more attention to their pets.
This can clearly be seen when we look at pet foods, which often contain more vitamins than human food. They certainly cost much. Last year the British public spent two hundred million pounds on pet food alone, to say nothing of veterinary bills or animal furniture. It is difficult not to feel angry about this when considering what the same amount could do for victims of starvation and poverty, so it is not unusual for me to get hot under the collar when I read an old man left all his money to his dog instead of his children.
There are a variety of reasons why I find pets-raising alarming. They cause physical problems. An example of this is New York where they have great difficulty getting rid of the mess that dogs leave on the streets. Many people find this funny, but in a number of large cities it is a major problem. Animals can cause disease, too. It is the threat of rabies — a disease with no known cure.
Another problem is the carelessness of pet owners. Most little children want a dog or a cat, and they continually push their mothers and fathers until they get one. It is only when the "sweet little thing" has been brought home that the parents realize how much time and money must be spent on "Rover" or "Bonzo". Then they just abandon it. As a result, they are allowed to run free. English farmers lose hundreds of sheep a year, killed by someone's pet and you must have read of children being hurt by some pets of their own.
Lastly, I would only suggest that we have got our priorities wrong and that something should be done about it. In my view, it's time we stopped being sentimental about pets. I can see no reason why we should get upset when animals are cut up for medical experiments. This will lead us to discovering cures for serious human diseases, then I say, “keep cutting!”
1. The doggy parlors are mentioned in the 1st paragraph to show ________.
A.where Americans keep their pets
B.what costly lives the pets are living
C.why children love their pets so much
D.how much pets depend on their masters
2. In the second paragraph "to get hot under the collar" probably means ________.
A.getting quite hotB.feeling overwhelmingly angry
C.becoming excitedD.receiving a fashionable shirt
3. According to the author, in which field can animals be most useful?
A.Pet.B.Food.C.Medicine.D.Sports.
4. What is author’s attitude towards pets-raising?
A.Pitiful.B.Neutral.C.Opposed.D.Supportive.

9 . Nature’s cheats

Mary is digging in the ground for a potatowhen along comes JohnSeeing that there is no one in sight, John starts to screamJohn’s angry mother rushes over and drives Mary awayOnce his mum has goneJohn helps himself to Mary’s potato

We’ve all experienced similar annoying tricks when we were young-the brother who stole your ball and then got you into trouble by telling your parents you had hit himBut Mary and John are not humansThey’re African baboons(狒狒)    1

John’s scream and his mother’s attack on Mary could have been a matter of chance, but John was later seen playing the same tricks on others    2

Studying behavior like this is complicated, but scientists discovered apes(猿)clearly showed that they intended to cheat and knew when they themselves had been cheated    3     An ape was annoying him, so he tricked her into going away by pretending he had seen something interestingWhen she found nothing, she “walked back, hit me over the head with her hand and ignored me for the rest of the day

Another way to decide whether an animal’s behavior is deliberate is to look for actions that are not normal for that animalA zoo worker describes how an ape dealt with an enemy“He slowly stole up behind the other ape, walking on tiptoeWhen he got close to his enemy, he pushed him violently in the back, then ran indoors.” Wild apes do not normally walk on tiptoe    4     But looking at the many cases of deliberate trickery in apes, it is impossible to explain them all as simple copying

It seems that trickery does play an important part in ape societies    5     Studying the intelligence of our closest relative could be the way to understand the development of human intelligence

A.In most cases the animal probably doesn’t know it is cheating
B.An amusing example of this comes from a psychologist working in Tanzania
C.And playing tricks is as much a part of monkey behavior as it is of human behavior
D.So the psychologists asked his colleagues if they had noticed this kind of trickery
E.The ability of animals to cheat may be a better measure of their intelligence than their use

of tools

F.This use of a third individual to achieve a goal is only one of the many tricks commonly

used by baboons

G.Of course it’s possible that it could have learnt from humans that such behavior works, without understanding why
