The day when the jobs were handed out was one of the most exciting days for all the children in the class. It took place during the first week of the term. On that day, every boy and girl was given a job for which they would be responsible for the rest of that school year.

As with everything, some jobs were more interesting than others, and the children were eager to be given one of the best ones. When giving them out, the teacher took into account which pupils had been most responsible during the previous year, and those children were the ones who most looked forward to this day. Among them Rita stood out. During the previous year she had carried out the teacher’s instructions perfectly. All the children knew Rita was the favourite to be given the best job of all:   to look after the class dog.

But that year there was a big surprise. As a reward, Rita was given a little box containing some sand and one ant while other children received some normal jobs, like preparing the books or the radio for the lessons, telling the time, or cleaning the blackboard. Rita could not help feeling disappointed. Most of her classmates felt sorry for her. Although the teacher explained to Rita that this ant was a very special one, he couldn’t tell Rita that if she could successfully raise it, the whole class would be chosen to the tropical rainforest project together with other scientists. Though disappointed, Rita was determined to do her best. She said to herself, “I will turn this little task into something great.”

So Rita started investigating all about her little ant. She learned about the different species, and studied everything about their habitats and behaviour. She modified the little box to make it perfect for the ant. Rita gave the ant the very best food, and it ended up growing quite a bit bigger than anyone had expected.

The new term came. One day when they were in the classroom, the door opened, revealing a man who looked rather important. The teacher interrupted the class with great joy, and said, “This is Doctor Martinez. He has come to tell us a wonderful piece of news, isn’t that right?”

文章大意:本文为一篇说明文。作者通过这篇文章向我们描述了鲸鱼的巨大魅力,从而引出了一些观鲸的建议。

3 . You never forget your first whale. The impact it makes upon you is huge and life is never quite the same again. My first whale was a 40-foot grey one, off the coast of California in 1979, and I've been a whale addict ever since. Now I have to go whale watching regularly just to survive normal daily life.

I may be crazy but I am certainly not alone. The world is filled with whale watchers: since its beginnings in the mid-fifties, whale watching has grown dramatically and now more than 13 million people join organized whale watching trips every year.

As a faithful whale watcher, all your holidays center on whales. The only books you read are ones about whales; you wear whale T-shirts, and every time you meet your friends you talk about whales.

So what is it about these larger-than-life animals that makes them so special? Their enormous size is one possible explanation: imagine sitting in a small boat next to a blue whale almost as long as a Boeing 737. The fact that we know so little about them is another possibility: modern technology has taken us to the moon and beyond, yet we are only just beginning to understand these extraordinary forms of intelligent life on our own planet.

Planning and patience are just two essential requirements for successful whale watching. Planning is needed because there are certain whale hot spots-where you have the best chance of seeing them-and because the larger species tend to be on their way from feeding areas to breeding grounds, so rarely do they stay in one place for more than a few months at a time.

Patience is necessary because, even under the best conditions, whales can be tricky to find. However, most commercial whale watching trips have a surprisingly high success rate because they tend to concentrate on well-known whale populations at peak (最高的) seasons.

1. What is the impact of the author's first whale in his life?
A.He has fallen in love with whale watching.
B.He has organized watching trips every year.
C.He has written a good many articles on whale watching.
D.He has made a lot of speeches about protecting whales.
2. The third paragraph mainly tells us ________.
A.what faithful whale watchers usually read
B.what faithful whale watchers are usually like
C.faithful whale watchers often wear whale T-shirts
D.faithful whale watchers often take part in whale forums
3. Why does the author mention modern technology in paragraph 4?
A.To say that man has landed on the moon.
B.To prove that whales are really attractive.
C.To show us the power of modern technology.
D.To tell us that whales are intelligent animals.
4. Why is patience necessary in whale watching?
A.It is very difficult to find these clever whales.
B.Whales only appear at seas that arc deep and far.
C.Whales often stay under water for quite a long time.
D.Whales are on their way to breeding grounds at a time.

4 . Ever since Earth formed roughly 4.5 billion years ago, its climate has gone through a number of incredible changes.

All you have to do is look at images of the Jurassic Period (侏罗纪时期) to know that at one time, much of our planet was covered in extremely hot and humid jungle. Skip ahead a couple million years and you get to an ice age event, when global temperature experienced a huge drop. While many species were not able to deal with these changing climate patterns, others successfully adapted, and some are even still with us today. Now, as humanity pushes the planet closer to another extreme climate event, scientists are eager to find out how the world's species will react. The idea was highlighted in a study published on April 6 in the journal PNAS, which showed that between 1970 and 2010, open water species such as lobsters and fish had declined by about half in tropical marine zones across the globe because over the 40-year time period, sea temperatures in those regions had risen by roughly 0. 2°C.

The lower numbers aren't a sign of all the sea creatures dying off though. In fact, the scientists found some of them outside of their traditional habitats, meaning that if a species can migrate to cooler waters and adapt in a new environment, they will.

However, those movements aren’t always a good thing; species that can' t move, such as coral, which is fixed to the seabed, rely on the fish and other sea creatures to contribute to the natural food chain and stay healthy. Additionally, when a non- native species moves into a new area, it threatens to disrupt the ecosystem that already exists there.

Depending on the species, it can take anywhere from one generation to thousands and thousands of years to properly adapt, so the changes that have occurred in just the last 40 years are very troubling for scientists. As Sebastian Ferse, an ecologist at the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research, Germany, explained, “In geological history, this has occurred in the blink of an eye. To see such changes occurring so rapidly is something quite alarming.

1. What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A.Some species that adapted to the climate changes survived.
B.Most species were able to deal with the changing climate patterns.
C.Global temperature experienced a huge drop during Jurassic Period.
D.Much of our planet was covered in humid jungle during ice age event.
2. How did some sea creatures survived climate changes according to the scientists?
A.By changing their food chain.B.By adjusting their own temperature.
C.By moving to other places and adapted.D.By human beings' protecting.
3. What does the underlined word “disrupt” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Improve.B.Balance.C.Disturb.D.Establish.
4. Which word best describes scientists' attitudes to the migration of species?
A.Optimistic. .B.Negative.C.Objective.D.Indifferent.

5 . It’s true that quite a few most respected scientific authorities have confirmed that the world is becoming hotter and hotter. There’s also strong evidence that humans are contributing to the warming. Countless recent reports have proved the same thing. For instance, a 2010 summary about the climate science by the Royal Society noted that: “The global warming over the last half-century has been caused mainly by human activity.”

You may not believe that humans could change the planet’s climate, but the basic science is well understood. Each year, billions of tons of greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere because of human activity. As has been known for years, these gases hold heat that would otherwise escape to space, wrapping the planet in an invisible blanket.

Of course, the earth’s climate has always been changing due to “natural” factors such as volcanic eruption or changes in solar, or cycles concerning the Earth’s going around the sun. According to the scientific research, however, the warming observed by now matches the pattern of warming we would expect from a build-up of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere—not the warming we would expect from other possible causes.

Even if scientists did discover another reasonable explanation for the warming recorded so far, that would give birth to a difficult question. As Robert Henson puts it: “If some newly discovered factor is to blame for the climate change, then why aren’t carbon dioxide and the other greenhouse gases producing the warming that basic physics tells us they should be?”

The only way to prove with 100% certainty that humans are responsible for global warming would be to run an experiment with two identical Earths — one with human influence and one without. That obviously isn’t possible, and so most scientists are careful not to state human influence as an absolute certainty.

6 . Scientists say they have found high levels of small plastic particles(颗粒) in Arctic snow. A German-Swiss research team collected snow samples(样本)from the Arctic and other areas. They included northern Germany, the Bavarian and Swiss Alps, and the North Sea island of Heligoland. When the researchers examined the samples in a laboratory, they were surprised to find very high levels of microplastics.

Microplastics are very small pieces of plastic. These plastic particles are generally smaller than 5 millimeters in length. They come from the breakdown of man-made plastic products and industrial waste.

The study found the highest levels of microplastics came from the Bavarian Alps. One snow sample from the area had 154,000 microplastic particles per liter. Samples collected from the Arctic had much lower levels. However, even samples from the Arctic contained up to 14,000 particles per liter.

The study also attempted to explore how some of the material could have been carried in the atmosphere. A limited number of earlier studies did find microplastics in the air of some cities, including Paris, Tehran and Dongguan, China.

Bergmann Melanie co-wrote the report on the new study. She believes the new study clearly shows that “the majority of the microplastic in the snow comes from the air.” The new study suggests that much of the microplastic found in Europe and the Arctic comes from the atmosphere and snow.

While there is growing concern about the effect of microplastics on the environment, scientists are still studying their possible harmful effects on humans and animals. “I hope the new study will lead to more research on this issue. I think   microscopic plastic particles should be included in worldwide observations of air pollution levels. We really need to know what effects microplastics have on humans, especially if inhaled with the air that we breathe.” Bergmann said.

1. Why did scientists collect samples from so many places in paragragh 1?
A.To make the research convincing.
B.To attract people to explore there.
C.To measure the length of microplastics .
D.To examine the samples easily in the lab.
2. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.The risks of microplastics.
B.The transport of microplastics.
C.The breakdown of plastic products.
D.The description of microplastics.
3. What did the research team find about microplastics?
A.Many people threw them away at the Alps.
B.They were delivered to remote areas through air.
C.They could be caught sight of in the air.
D.They had no great effect on the environment.
4. What can be inferred from what Bergmann said in the last paragraph?
A.Scientists are worried about the the influence of microplastics.
B.We have found a practical solution to the environment problem.
C.The effect of microplastics on human must be urgently researched.
D.There is no need to change observations of air pollution levels.

7 . Wind farms have been considered as the way to fight global warming, but a new study suggests they could actually heat the planet up.

The study found that the US would get warmer if the number of turbines(涡轮机)were increased markedly. Researchers say they'll require much more land than previously thought, needing five to 20 times more space than earlier studies have suggested. And winds created by vast fields of turbines could mix warm and cool air, which makes the surface quite warm .

Despite the potential drawbacks, however, the researchers argue wind energy still makes more sense for the environment than fossil fuels. Study coauthor and Harvard University scientist Professor David Keith argued that, when it comes to energy production, there is no free lunch. "Wind beats coal by any environmental measure, but that doesn't mean that its effects can be ignored. We must use fewer fossil fuels to stop carbon production. In doing so, we must make choices between various low-carbon technologies , all of which have some environmental effects , " he said.

More than ten previous studies have now observed local warming caused by US wind farms. Researchers suggested that solar power offers a less damaging energy source in the fight against climate change. In terms of temperature difference per unit of energy generation, solar power has about 10 times less effect than wind, and the solar power energy is mature in a wide range of fields. But there are other considerations. For example, solar farms are dense(密集的), while the land between wind turbines can be co-used for agriculture.

Tidal power is an environmentally-friendly energy source. In addition to being a renewable energy, it does not give off any climate gases and does not take up a lot of space . However , there are currently very few examples from real tidal power plants and their effects on the environment. Also, it is important to realize that the methods for generating electricity from tidal energy are relatively new technologies. It is projected that tidal power will be commercially profitable within2030 with better technology and larger scales.

1. What is the purpose of the text?
A.To introduce a study finding.
B.To discuss the global warming problem.
C.To prove the benefits of wind farms.
D.To call attention to environmental protection.
2. What is paragraph 2 mainly about ?
A.The effects of global warming.
B.The reason for using wind energy.
C.The disadvantages of wind farms.
D.The working principle of wind farms.
3. What do Professor David Keith's words suggest?
A.Producing energy is easier than before.
B.Consuming energy damages the environment.
C.Burning coal should be totally stopped.
D.Developing low-carbon technologies is hard.
4. Which is recommended considering the environment and practical use?
A.Wind energy.B.Fossil fuel.
C.Tidal power.D.Solar energy.
