文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了迪拜从依赖石油转向发展可再生能源、绿色建筑和公共交通系统,特别是通过可持续城市项目展示了其向环保和可持续发展方向的努力。

1 . To appreciate Dubai, you could start by going skiing. The ski resort, located inside one of the city’s shopping malls, looks from the outside like a silver spaceship. You put on a thick coat, pull on your gloves and then marvel at what strong air-conditioning can do. At the exit, you can buy a souvenir T-shirt. A cartoon thermometer in Celsius announces: “I went from +50 to minus 8!”

Indoor skiing in the desert has become a symbol of Dubai’s status as a wealthy, modem metropolis. This small fishing village, Dubai’s fortunes changed forever with the discovery of oil in the 1960s. Since then. it has evolved to become the largest city. But the rapid growth has come at a price. To power its cars and air-conditioning, the city has produced large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO. ) from fossil fuels. Now it is making some big changes.

To reduce its dependence on cars and lower its emissions, Dubai has invested in solar energy, green buildings, and a comprehensive public transportation system. In addition, all new buildings must meet strict energy regulations.

The most striking development can be found where the city’s suburbs meet the desert. Unlike much of Dubai, the Sustainable City to the south feels more like a close-knit-village community. About five hundred low-rise houses are distributed along attractive, tree-lined streets. They all face north, away from direct sunlight, and are close together to provide natural shade. Each building has reflective windows and wall paint, which reduce the heat absorbed from the sun. Rooftop solar panels and energy-saving lights contribute to the community’s energy efficiency. As a result, residents of the Sustainable City now consume 50 percent less energy than people living in other parts of Dubai.

By 2050, the government intends to obtain 75 percent of the city’s energy from renewable sources-mainly solar. It also wants to have the smallest ecological footprint in the world. The plan is ambitious. But if successful, even guilt-free skiing in the desert could become an reality.

1. Why does the writer start the passage by describing a ski resort?
A.To demonstrate the problems of living near a desert.
B.To describe an expensive and unsuccessful building project.
C.To give an example of how Dubai is a wealthy modern city.
D.To provide a warning of what Dubai might be like in the future.
2. The word striking in paragraph four is closest in meaning to
A.distinctiveB.isolatedC.massiveD.uniform
3. Which feature is NOT true about the green buildings?
A.Installation of energy-efficient lights.B.Avoidance of the sunlight from north.
C.Placement of solar panels on rooftops.D.Arrangement to allow natural cooling.
4. What would be the best title for this passage?
A.How Oil Has Changed Dubai.B.Dubai’s Economic Future.
C.The Costs of Green Living.D.Building a Sustainable City.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了首架使用纯高脂肪、低排放燃料飞越大西洋的商用客机周二从伦敦飞往纽约,这是朝着支持者所说的“零喷气机”迈出的一步。

3 . The first commercial airliner to cross the Atlantic on a purely high-fat, low-emissions fuel flew Tuesday from London to New York in a step toward achieving what supporters called “jet zero”.

The Virgin Atlantic Boeing 787 flight was powered without using fossil fuels, relying on so-called sustainable aviation (航空) fuel made up largely of tallow (动物油脂) and other waste fats and plant sugars. “The world will always assume something can’t be done, until you do it.” said Virgin founder Richard Branson, who was aboard the flight with government officials, engineers and journalists.

The UK Transport Department, which provided 1 million pounds to plan and operate the flight, called the test a “huge step towards j et zero” to make air travel more environmentally friendly, though large challenges remain in making the fuel widely available.

Sustainable aviation fuel, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions by about 70%, is the best near-term way for the international aviation industry to achieve its net zero target by 2050, the US Energy Department said.

Holly Boyd-Boland, president of corporate development at Virgin Atlantic, said the flight shows the fuel can power existing aircraft but said the challenge is enlarging production to get to enough volume so that they are using more sustainable aviation fuel every day.

While this is the first jetliner to make the trans-Atlantic journey using only the sustainable fuel, it is not a commercial flight and not the first jet to do so. Gulfstream Aerospace was the first to make the crossing earlier this month with a business jet powered only by the eco-fuel. Air France-KLM flew from Paris to Montreal two years ago using a mix of petroleum-based jet fuel and a synthetic (合成物) made from waste cooking oils.

“This flight somehow gets us closer to guilt-free flying. Sustainable aviation fuel represents around 0.1% of aviation fuel globally and will be very hard to expand sustainably, but the flight is a valuable try,” said policy director Cait Hewitt.

1. What can we infer from paragraph 2?
A.The Boeing 787 has a special structure.
B.Greener fuel has become a reality in a way.
C.Airlines should put waste fats to good use.
D.Fossil fuels will be replaced in the near future.
2. What’s Holly’s concern about the sustainable fuel?
A.It runs into technical difficulties.
B.It is unsuitable for commercial flights.
C.It is unable to gain the public recognition.
D.It fails to power existing planes constantly.
3. What do Gulfstream Aerospace and Air France-KLM have in common?
A.They follow in Virgin Atlantic’s footsteps.
B.They take advantage of waste cooking oils.
C.They develop sustainable fuel products actively.
D.They are attempting to create eco-friendly aviation.
4. What is Cait Hewitt’s attitude towards this test flight?
A.Supportive.B.Doubtful.C.Indifferent.D.Concerned.

5 . More than 30 years ago, Jadav Payeng started planting trees on a barren sandbar (贫瘠的沙洲) near his birthplace in India’s Assam region. That day, the then-16-year-old noticed many snakes washed up on the sandbar after a flood. They were dying due to heat exposure at a rapid rate. “How can I help them?” Then he had an idea: Trees can provide shade for them!

Jadav lives on an island, Majuli, which is in the middle of the Brahmaputra River. It begins at the base of the Himalayas, at the meeting of a fan of rivers that drain (流走) snowmelt. At one time, villages upstream had redirected the river, creating more forceful currents around the island and carrying away the soil, thus damaging the natural habitats of its wildlife. As a consequence, much of the island became barren sand, and an entire community was at risk of being displaced.

Jadav also noticed that nobody was doing anything about it besides watching their part of the world disappear. So, he started to put his idea into action — every day, one or two or three at a time. He took notes of how they grew, harvested their seeds, grew saplings (树苗) in his hut and planted before going off to work.

Now that once-barren sandbar is a 1,360-acre forest, home to many animals: deer, Bengal tigers, Indian rhinoceros and even a group of 100 elephants that visit every year. There are now native grasses that have taken root in the shade and varieties of native trees grown from seeds that have washed ashore. But most importantly, the island that is also home to a few hundred people is holding its own against the bad weather. Standing beside one of the first trees he planted 30 years ago, Jadav tells us: “It’s a little thing, something anyone can do.”

1. What was Jadav’s original aim to plant trees?
A.To save the snakes from heat exposure.B.To protect the snakes from extinction.
C.To produce materials to stop flooding.D.To use the leaves to create more shades.
2. What primarily made Majuli a barren island?
A.Villagers’ ignorance of ecology.B.Villagers’ redirecting the river.
C.The extreme weather conditions.D.Loss of wildlife’s natural habitats.
3. Which of the following can best describe Jadav?
A.Frank and learned.B.Subjective yet reliable.
C.Determined and careful.D.Smart but hot-tempered.
4. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.What the forest means to the wildlife.B.How ecology benefits the human kind.
C.How Jadav feels about his simple deeds.D.What difference Jadav’s efforts have made.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章讲述一项新的研究表明使用塑料可能和心脏病发作率高有关,但还需要更多研究来证明它们之间存在因果关系。

6 . We breathe, eat and drink tiny particles of plastic. But are these in the body harmless. dangerous or somewhere in between? A small study published on Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine raises more questions than it answers about how these hits might affect the heart.

The study involved 257 people who had surgery to clear blocked blood vessels in their necks. Using two methods, researchers found evidence of plastics-mostly invisible nanoplastics — in 150 patients and no evidence of plastics in 107 patients. They followed these people for three years. During that time, 30 or 20% of those with plastics had a heart attack, stroke or died from any cause, compared to 8 or about 8% of those with no evidence of plastics.

The researchers also found more evidence of inflammation (炎症) in the people with the plastic bits in their blood vessels. Inflammation is the body’s response to injury and is thought to raise the risk of heart attacks and stroke.

“I hope that the alarming message will raise the consciousness of citizens, especially governments, to finally become aware of the importance of the health of our planet.” said Dr. Raffaele Marfella of the University of Campania in Italy.

Nevertheless, the study was very small and looked only at people with narrowed arteries (动脉), who were already at risk for heart attack and stroke. The patients with the plastics had more heart disease, diabetes and high cholesterol (胆固醇) than the patients without plastics. They were more likely to be men and more likely to be smokers. The researchers tried to adjust for these risk factors during their statistical analysis, but they may have missed important differences between the groups that could account for the results. This kind of study cannot prove that the plastics caused their problems.

“More research is needed and it is the first report suggesting a connection between microplastics and nanoplastics with disease in humans,” said Dr. Philip Landrigan of Boston College. Other scientists have found plastic bits in the lungs, liver, blood, and breast milk, “It does not prove cause and effect, but it suggests cause and effect,” he said, “And it needs urgently to be either confirmed or disproven (反驳) by other studies done by other investigators in other populations.”

1. What did the study find about the plastics in blood?
A.They are visible and detectable.B.They may raise the risk of serious injuries.
C.They need to be removed by surgery.D.They may account for a higher rate of heart attacks.
2. What did Raffaele Marfella suggest?
A.Immediate action should be taken by government.
B.Alarming message should be spread widely and quickly.
C.The awareness of the harm of plastic bits should be enhanced.
D.Joint efforts must be made to keep healthy physically and mentally.
3. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about regarding the study?
A.Limitations.B.Advantages.C.Causes.D.Effects.
4. What did Dr. Philip Landrigan think of the study?
A.Helpful but unrealistic.B.Pioneering but impractical.
C.Distinctive but unnecessary.D.Suggestive but inconclusive.

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道。这篇文章详细报道了中国第一冶金集团在越南河内市建设的垃圾焚烧发电厂项目。

10 . In a groundbreaking project, China First Metallurgical Group has completed its first overseas waste-to-energy plant in Hanoi, Vietnam.

The largest waste incineration (焚化) power plant in Vietnam has not only revolutionized waste management in the country but has also involved the training of local workers. The plant has addressed the city’s growing waste problem by processing 4,000 metric tons of urban waste every day, about 60 percent of the city’s daily waste, the group said. The technology in the facility not only converts waste into green energy but also ensures environmentally friendly treatment.

Hu Changbing, manager of the group’s Vietnam branch, said, “The plant is an achievement of the cooperation between China and Vietnam. It is a green project that benefits local residents.” Since the first unit started generating electricity in July, 2022, the plant has been operating well, Hu said.

The project was built on the former site of Hanoi's waste treatment center, where the majority of the city’s waste was previously buried in landfill. In addition to generating clean energy through incineration, the plant also produces environmentally friendly bricks from the residue (残渣). The emitted gases and wastewater are treated to meet European Union emission standards and achieve drinking-water quality. Covering an area of 170,000 square meters, the plant consists of waste storage pools, incinerators, treatment and processing plants, and waste gas treatment facilities.

Recalling the start of the project, Hu said to gain the trust of local residents, his group set up a dedicated team of Chinese and Vietnamese personnel to explain the benefits of the project and take on local people. Vietnam lacked experience in waste incineration power plant construction. The Chinese team has set a bench mark (标杆) for the local industry and left behind valuable technical knowledge, Hu said. During the peak of construction, over 80 percent of the 2,000 workers employed were locals. “The local workers proved to be intelligent and diligent. They learn skills quickly,” Hu said.

In 2021, Hu took over the management of the Vietnam project. Hu, a native of Yichang city, Hubei province, has been working with the group for 23 years since graduating from Hubei University of Technology with a degree in civil engineering. Chinese masters led groups of Vietnamese workers, teaching them skills and safety regulations, and assessing their qualifications before allowing them to work.

This success has also inspired the construction of multiple waste incineration power plants in Vietnam, with many workers having gained their skills and experience from the project, he added. The project was carried out under the framework of China’s Belt and Road Initiative and was aimed at contributing to the sustainable development of the Vietnamese capital.
