1 . "While extroverts (性格外向者) often make great first impressions with their outgoing manner and lively personalities in interviews, that value and reputation at work diminish (削减) over time,” says Corinne Bendersky, an associate professor of management.

“Extroverts disappoint us over time when they're part of a team,” Bendersky says. “On a team you're expected to work hard and contribute a lot. But they're often poor listeners, and they don't collaborate.”

“On the other hand, introverts (性格内向者) work hard on a team because they care what others think of them. They don't want to be seen as not pulling their weight or contributing 100%,” Bendersky says.

So while companies may be attracted to hiring extroverts because they impress managers greatly in job interviews, bosses also may want to consider whether the extrovert they are considering will be a valuable team player, Bendersky says.

Amy Jen Su and Muriel Maignan Wilkins, two writers, agree and say managers should recognize the strengths of introverted employees, such as their ability to put themselves in someone else's shoes.

“These team members are often easygoing, which can make them exceptional mentors (良师益友) to more junior staff or particularly good sounding boards when you interact with them in one-on-one situations,” Su says.

“Managers must try to help introverts find their voice,” Wilkins says. “Help them see that speaking up is not about self-promotion or being in conflict but rather about offering the team key insights, making better decisions or increasing the efficiency for all.”

What about those extroverts who never seem to be at a loss for words? Should managers cut them off? Managers definitely should weigh in on how an extrovert is affecting others. Wilkins suggests saying something in private to make adjustments.

1. What do we know about outgoing people according to Bendersky?
A.They are good listeners.B.They are good at cooperating.
C.They often make great contributions.D.They tend to perform well in interviews.
2. Which can best replace the underlined part “pulling their weight” in Paragraph 3?
A.Trusting others.B.Making good choices.
C.Doing their full share of work.D.Trying to share their thoughts.
3. What is Su's attitude towards Bendersky's words?
A.Critical.B.Tolerant.C.Doubtful.D.Approving.
4. What does Wilkins advise managers to do?
A.Promote more introverts.B.Learn to work more efficiently.
C.Encourage introverts to speak up.D.Avoid conflict among employees.
5. How is the text mainly developed?
A.By providing examples.B.By making comparisons.
C.By following the order of time.D.By following the order of importance.

2 . Richard is a very a successful businessman. It is common for him to work hard with a non-stop.He wasn’t aware that he might wear himself out or die an early death until he overslept one morning, which was a sort of alarm. And then what happened? He had a week’s leave during which time he read novels, listened to music and walked with his wife on a beach, which has enabled Richard to return to work again.

In our modern life, we have lost the rhythm between action and rest. Amazingly, within this world there is a universal but silly saying: “I am so busy.”

We say this to one another as if our tireless efforts were a talent by nature and an ability to successfully deal with stress. The busier we are, the more important we seem to ourselves and, we imagine, to others. To be unavailable to our friends and family, and to be unable to find time to relax—— this has become the model of a successful life.

Because we do not rest, we lose our way. We miss the guide telling us where to go, the food providing is with strength, the quiet giving us wisdom.

How have we allowed this to happen? I believe it is this: we have forgotten the Sabbath, the day of the week—— for followers of some religions—— for rest and praying. It is a day when we are not supposed to work, a time when we devote ourselves to enjoying and celebrating what is beautiful. It is a good time to bless our children and loved ones, give thanks, share meals, walk and sleep. It is a time for us to take a rest, to put our work aside, trusting that there are larger forces at work taking care of the world.

Rest is s spiritual and biological need; however, in our strong ambition to be successful and care for our many responsibilities, we may feel terribly guilty when we take time to rest. The Sabbath gives us permission to stop work. In fact, “Remember the Sabbath” is more than simply permission to rest; it is a rule to obey and a principle to follow.

1. What’s the function of the paragraph1?
A.To tell us that Richard lives a healthy life.
B.To bring up the topic of the passage.

A.Praying for our family.B.Taking a good break.
C.Only working for two hours.D.Enjoying delicious meal.
5. Some people feel guilty when taking time to rest because they ________.
A.think that taking a rest means lacking ambitions
B.fail to realize that rest is an essential part of life
C.fail to realize that religions force them to rest
D.think that taking a rest means being lazy
6. What is the main idea of this passage?
A.We should balance work with rest.
B.The Sabbath gives us permission to rest.
C.It is silly for anyone to say “I am busy.”
D.We should be available to our family and friends.

3 . Future history books might record that we were robbed of the use of our eyes. In our hurry to get from one place to another, we fail to see anything on the way. Air travel gives you a bird’s—eye view of the world—— or even less if the wing of the aircraft happens to get in your way. When you travel by car or train, you are moving so quickly that you do not see the countryside clearly. Car drivers are forever thinking about going on and on; they never want to stop. Is it the great motorways, that attract them, or what? And as for sea travel, it hardly deserves mention. It is perfectly summed up in the words of the old song, “I joined the navy to see the world, and what did I see? I saw the sea.” You mention the place names in the world like EI Dorado, Kabul and someone is sure to say “I’ve been there” meaning “I drove through it at 100 miles an hour on the way to somewhere else.”

When you travel at high speed, the present means nothing: you live mainly in the future because you spend most of your time looking forward to arriving at some other places. But actual arrival, when it is achieved, is meaningless. You want to move on again. By traveling like this, you suspend (中止) all experience; the present stops being a reality: you might just as well be dead.

The traveler on foot, on the other hand, lives constantly in the present. For him traveling and arriving are one and the same thing: he arrives somewhere with every step he makes. He experiences the present moment with his eyes, his ears and the whole of his body. At the end of his journey he feels a delicious physical tiredness. Satisfying sleep will be his: the just reward of all true travelers.

1. The underlined words “get in your way” in Paragraph 1 can be replaced by ________
A.prevent you from going out of the plane halfwayB.expand your range of vision
C.block your sightsD.make your travel continue
2. What does the author think of the travelers mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A.They fail to see the scenery with their hearts.
B.They make full use of their eyes.
C.They get a good view of the landscape.
D.They are eager to see everything on the way.
3. Why does “the present” mean “nothing” when we travel at high speed?
A.Because we change our aims all the time.
B.Because we cannot enjoy the experience we have had.
C.Because we are looking forward to the future life.
D.Because we are eager to go to another place.
4. What will the author most probably advise us to do?
A.To go hiking in the mountain.
B.To travel at high speed.
C.To travel by car or train.
D.To go around the world.
5. what would be the best title for the passage?
A.Different TravelersB.True Traveling
C.Ways of TravelingD.The Use of Eyes

4 . 阅读短文,并根据短文内容回答问题。

If you step into a bookstore, you might notice a section(区域) labeled “self-help”. You might also notice that the section is getting bigger. That’s because more people are turning to self-help books for advice. The Guardian once reported that sales of these books in the UK rose by 20 percent, to a record high of three million books.

Self-help books try to guide readers through various life problems. Popular themes include getting along with coworkers, time management and finding happiness.

Different kinds of people write self-help books, including some celebrities, but usually these books are the work of psychologists(心理学家).

“People come into the shop and they're really fed up with things. They're looking for reassurances(安心) and peace of mind,” Paul Sweetman, the owner of City Books in the UK told the Guardian.

In addition, millennials-people born after 1980—tend to be more aware of their own flaws and shortcomings(缺点), according to US psychologist Caroline Beaton. This means they're more likely to feel a need to improve themselves. Self-help books may have the answers they're looking for.

Self-help books used to be something people laughed at. Many people didn't take “Chicken Soup stories” or “success theory” books too seriously. But now they’re more respected. “They're as good to read as any novel,” Sweetman said.

Whatever the reason for the increased interest in self-help books, it's nice to know that help is at hand if we need it. But are these books truly helpful? Read one and find out.

1. What is the passage mainly about? (no more than 12 words)
2. What do the “Self-help” books aim to do? (no more than 12 words)
3. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 4 mean in English? (no more than 8 words)
4. Why do people turn to “self-help” books according to Paul Sweetman? (no more than 10 words)
5. What kind of books are you fond of and why? (no more than 20 words)

5 . 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

When a man was walking by some elephants, he     1     (sudden) stopped. He was puzzled that these huge animals were being held only by a small rope(绳子) tied to their front legs. No chains, no cages.     2     was obvious that the elephants could break     3     (they) bonds at any time, but for some reason, they did not.

He saw a trainer nearby and     4     (ask) why the animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away. “Well,” the trainer said, “when they were very young and much smaller, we used     5     same rope to keep them from     6     (run) away. At the age, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are used to believing they cannot break the rope. They believe it can still hold them, so they never try    7     (break) free.”

The man was     8     (amaze). These animals could break free whenever they wanted, but because they believed they couldn’t, they were stuck right in the place    9     they were.

How many of us go through life like the elephants—holding onto the belief that we cannot do something simply because we failed at it once before?

Failure is a part of learning     10     we failed once, it doesn’t mean we can never succeed. We should never give up trying when we encounter failures in life.

6 . Give yourself a test. Which way is the wind blowing? How many kinds of wildflowers can be seen from your front door? If your awareness is as sharp as it could be, you’ll have no trouble answering these questions.

Most of us observed much more as children than we do as adults. A child’s day is filled with fascination, newness and wonder. Curiosity gave us all a natural awareness. But distinctions that were sharp to us as children become unclear; we are numb(麻木的)to new stimulation(刺激), new ideas. Relearning the art of seeing the world around us is quite simple, although it takes practice and requires breaking some bad habits.

The first step in awakening senses is to stop predicting what we are going to see and feel before it occurs. This blocks awareness. One chilly night when I was hiking in the Rocky Mountains with some students, I mentioned that we were going to cross a mountain stream. The students began complaining about how cold it would be. We reached the stream, and they unwillingly walked ahead. They were almost knee-deep when they realized it was a hot spring. Later they all admitted they’d felt cold water at first.

Another block to awareness is the obsession(痴迷) many of us have with naming things. I saw bird watchers who spotted a bird, immediately looked it up in field guides, and said, a "ruby-crowned kinglet" and checked it off. They no longer paid attention to the bird and never learned what it was doing.

The pressures of "time" and "destination" are further blocks to awareness. I encountered many hikers who were headed to a distant camp-ground with just enough time to get there before dark. It seldom occurred to them to wander a bit, to take a moment to see what’s around them. I asked them what they’d seen. "Oh, a few birds," they said. They seemed bent on their destinations.

Nature seems to unfold to people who watch and wait. Next time you take a walk, no matter where it is, take in all the sights, sounds and sensations. Wander in this frame of mind and you will open a new dimension to your life.

1. According to Paragraph 2, compared with adults, children are more ________.
A.anxious to do wonders
B.sensitive to others’ feelings
C.likely to develop unpleasant habits
D.eager to explore the world around them
2. The bird watchers’ behavior shows that they ________.
A.are very patient in their observation
B.are really fascinated by nature
C.care only about the names of birds
D.question the accuracy of the field guides
3. Why do the hikers take no notice of the surroundings during the journey?
A.The natural beauty isn’t attractive to them.
B.They focus on arriving at the camp in time.
C.The forest in the dark is dangerous for them.
D.They are keen to see rare birds at the destination.
4. In the passage, the author intends to tell us we should ________.
A.fill our senses to feel the wonders of the world
B.get rid of some bad habits in our daily life
C.open our mind to new things and ideas
D.try our best to protect nature

8 . In today's world, online social media' has become more powerful and the most destructive thing over worldwide, although with time all generations have come to accept the changes social network has brought about, teenagers and young adults are the most enthusiastic users of these sites. According to various research studies in the field of online social networks, it has been revealed that these sites are impacting the' lives of the youth greatly. When using these sites such as Twitter, Facebook or Myspace, there are both positive and negative effects on the youth.

Firstly, social media helps the youth and any other user updated with what is happening around the world, and helps the teenagers stay connected and interact with each other even if they are many miles apart. This strengthens their relationship. Even if they finished school and moved to different locations, they stay connected and update one another.

In addition, social media sites have provided a platform whereby the youth can create groups and pages based on their common discipline and end up building connections and opportunities for their respective careers by updating different topics to discuss. Youth who have been interviewed say that social media has become their lifestyle and it makes their lives easier and more efficient.

While on the one hand social network sites seem to bring people together and stay connected, on the other hand it causes many physical and mental health problems such as eyes infection, back problems, etc. Other negative effects of social networking various people suggested included encouraging poor spelling and grammar, exposing underage to online predators (捕食者), allowing spread of misinformation that is seen as fact, decreasing productivity as those who are supposed to be working spend time in the sites to chat, providing a perfect platform for cyberbullying and providing details that increase risks of identity theft.

“The more social media we have, the more we think were connecting, yet we are really disconnecting from each other.” One researcher said.

In conclusion, social networking clearly portrays both positive and negative effects on the youth. It is the decision of individuals whether to use it in a right way or wrong.

9 . A short while ago, I lost access to my WeChat account. I am not sure why it wouldn’t let me log in; perhaps it was my ancient, out-of-date phone. But I wasn’t too upset because it offered me an opportunity to take a break from social media---something more and more people are doing.

In the United States, Twitter is losing millions of users each month and Facebook has seen a 44 percent decline among its younger users. Some of these users may have deserted Twitter and Facebook for other social media platforms, while many others have quit because they felt that social media was having a negative effect on their happiness and overall quality of life.

Stars such as Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeren have taken a break from social media because they were tired of so many Internet trolls(网络喷子) leaving negative comments. Ordinary people(like me) are turning away from it because of the feeling that they were spending more time online and enjoying less.

It is not unusual for people to spend two or three hours a day posting or reading posts, to the point where it becomes an addiction. And it is an addiction. There is a chemical in your brain known as dopamine(多巴胺) which is sometimes called the "reward molecule" and its release gives you a feeling of pleasure. For instance, when you post a photo on WeChat and get a hundred likes, you feel happy. That’s dopamine at work.

In my case, being off WeChat left me with a feeling of anxiety for a few days. No doubt I missed my dopamine. And I got e-mails from friends wondering if I was fine or if I was just being anti-social(不喜欢社交的). But I soon began to feel quite peaceful and started to worry less about what other people were doing and concentrate more on my personal life. And it is an added bonus that I’m getting better sleep at night.

I’m not advocating that all of you quit social media, but spending less time on these platforms does bring you advantages. You could start by leaving your phone at home when you go to school(For some, that’s already a school rule). And it is also a good idea to charge your phone outside of your bedroom at night, as you are unlikely to get a good night’s sleep when the notification(通知) bell keeps ringing.

Someday I may reconnect with my WeChat account, but I’m not in a hurry. Life can be more relaxing and just as interesting without it.

1. The author mentions his/her disconnection with WeChat at the beginning of the passage to________.
A.introduce the disadvantages of social media
B.explain why he lost access to his WeChat account
C.illustrate the function of dopamine
D.prove how WeChat makes life easier
2. What is the current situation of social media in the United States according to the passage?
A.Twitter and Facebook dominate all the social media.
B.Famous people have deserted Twitter and Facebook for other social media.
C.An increasing number of people are losing interest in social media.
D.Social media add to people’s happiness and life convenience.
3. What does the fourth paragraph talk about?
A.How dopamine works when you are posting or reading posts.
B.The reason behind people’s addiction to social media.
C.Why WeChat is so popular among ordinary people.
D.What you can do if you want to get many likes on WeChat.
4. What is the author’s attitude towards social media?
A.To turn away from them as soon as possible.
B.To choose a social media platform that suits you.
C.To connect with them is acceptable if you aren’t addicted to it.
D.To quit them will make your life more relaxing and interesting.

10 . Shakespeare wrote in his great play Hamlet, “Brevity (简洁) is the soul of wit.” But it seems that not everyone agrees with this. Microblog has canceled its 140-character limit for posts, meaning users can now write as many words as they like. And now Twitter, a US social media site that’s similar to Microblog, also announced that it plans to double its character limit from 140 to 280.

Twitter has its reasons for the changes. It’s a pain to have to edit your thoughts to less than 140 characters when you have so much to say. And a big problem for English writers is that it requires more space than character-based languages such as Chinese to express the same thing. According to The Atlantic, while the average English-language tweet is 34 characters, a Japanese one, for example, is only 15.

But still, Twitter users don’t seem to be happy with the new move.

Our reading habits have changed over time, and we’re used to keeping up to date with what’s happening in the world by reading just a couple of lines of text. For this, 140 characters are more than enough.

“[Microblogs] are almost always faster and more efficient than television, radio, newspapers, or any other source,” wrote Dom Knight, a reporter for The Guardian. “It’s like gathering in the town square ... in an instant.”

Trying to fit your thoughts into a limited space is also a good way to come up with smart comments, which is why microblogs are often where the best humor is found.

For example, during former US President Donald Trump’s election campaign in 2016, a Twitter user wrote: “If Trump can seriously win the presidency of this nation, I don’t want to see a job description with ‘experience required’ ever again.” And another wrote: “England: Nothing can be more embarrassing than Brexit. America: Watch this.” These tweets expressed people’s upset louder and quicker than any long articles ever could.

So perhaps we should pay attention to Shakespeare’s words. After all, he only needed 27 characters to make his famous point.

1. Why does Twitter plan to change its character limit for each post?
A.Twitter users always have a lot to say.
B.Users are not satisfied with the current character limit.
C.More characters are needed when writing in English than in Chinese.
D.Twitter saw that the benefit after Microblog changed the character limit.
2. What does “this” refer to in the 4th paragraph?
A.People want to know what is happening around the world.
B.People prefer to look through short posts rather than read long articles.
C.People are used to reading short posts in order to get the latest news.
D.People’s new reading habits make it hard to read long posts.
3. What is the advantage of Microblog according to Dom Knight?
A.People can get information which they cannot get from traditional media.
B.It can quickly gather various pieces of information for people.
C.It can make people feel as if they are there and experiencing an event themselves.
D.The posts can be easily understood because the characters in each post are limited.
4. Why does the author write about the two Twitter posts?
A.To show that the US presidential election attracted more attention than Brexit.
B.To explain how British people and Americans show their sense of humor.
C.To prove that Twitter is a platform where you can express your own opinions freely.
D.To offer evidence that limited characters can inspire smart posts.
5. What is the author’s attitude toward the character limit on social media?
A.It should be lifted because it makes it difficult for people to express thoughts.
B.It should be abandoned because it doesn’t fit people’s current reading habits.
C.It should be kept as Shakespeare argued that using fewer words is better.
D.It is meaningful because short texts fit people’s reading habits and help create the best humor.
