Any car accident is frightening, but an accident in which your vehicle is thrown into the water, with you trapped inside, is absolutely terrifying.     1    However, most deaths result from panic, without a plan or understanding what is happening to the car in the water. By adopting a brace(支撑) position, acting decisively and getting out fast, you can save yourself from a sinking vehicle.

Brace yourself for impact (撞击力). As soon as you're aware that you're going off the road and into a body of water, adopt a brace position. The impact could set off the airbag system in your vehicle, so you should place both hands on the steering wheel in the “ten and two” position.

Undo your seat belt.     2     Unfasten the children, starting with the oldest first. Forget the cell phone call. Your car isn’t going to wait for you to make the call.

    3     Leave the door alone at this stage and concentrate on the window. A car’s electrical system should work for up to three minutes in water, so try the method of opening it electronically first. Many people don’t think about the window as an escape option either because of panic or misinformation about doors and sinking.

Break the window. If you aren’t able to open the window, or it only opens halfway, you’ll need to break it with an object or your foot. It may feel counterintuitive (有悖常理的) to let water into the car.     4    

Escape when the car has equalized. If it has reached the dramatic stage where the car cabin has been filled with water and it has become balanced, you must move quickly and effectively to ensure your survival.     5     While there is still air in the car, take slow，deep breaths and focus on what you’re doing.

One night,     1     winter, a bear came into the city in Vancouver Canada. It walked through the city streets past houses, shops and offices. Then it     2     (find) some food in bins outside a restaurant and started eating. In the morning, someone saw the bear and called the police. The police came with a vet (兽医) from the city zoo. Big animals usually come into cities to find food. In Cape Town in South Africa baboons (狒狒) come into the city when they are     6     (hunger). Human food is very bad for the baboons     7     (tooth) because it has a lot of sugar. Now, there are Baboon Monitors working in Cape Town.     8     (they) job is to find baboons in the city and return them to the countryside.

In Berlin in Germany, pigs sometimes come into the city for food. They eat flowers and plants in parks and gardens. Sometimes they eat vegetables from gardens     9     they walk in the street, causing accidents. Some people like the pigs and they give them food and water to drink. Other people do not like the pigs and they want the government and the police to stop them     10     (enter) the city.

The shopping mall,     1     (很多人喜欢它的环境), was on fire last week because the gas pipes     2     (使用太长时间的) cracked. Those     3     (正在里面购物的) were trapped. It was such a big fire that the world seemed as if it came to an end. Many goods     4     (正在销售的) were destroyed. This was the biggest fire     5     (人们有史以来看到的). Luckily, the firefighters     6     (收到紧急电话的) came at once. They did all     7     (他们能做的) to put out the fire. To our relief , no one was injured or dead.

7 . A Heroic Driver

Larry works with Transport Drivers, Inc. One morning in 2009, Larry was___ along 165 north after delivering to one of his ___. Suddenly, he saw a car with its bright lights on. ____he got closer, he found another vehicle upside down on the road. One more look and he noticed ___ shooting out from under the ___ vehicle. Larry pulled over, set the brake and ___the fire extinguisher (灭火器). Two good bursts from the extinguisher and the fire was put out.   

The man who had his bright lights on___ and told Larry he had made an emergency call. 10 . Notre-Dame, the cathedral (大教堂) that serves as one of Paris’ most beloved monuments, is on fire. According to The New York Times the fire began around 6: 30 p.m. local time when tourists urgently rushed out of the building. Andre Finot, a spokesman for the cathedral, told The Times that the cause of the fire was still unknown and that no one had been hurt while damage to the building appeared catastrophic(灾难性的).

CNN reports that over 400 firefighters have been sent to fight the fire, but that they may be unable to save the cathedral. Built in the 12th century, Notre-Dame houses several relics important to Catholics (天主教徒). NBC News reports that relics from Saint Genevieve and Saint Denis may be lost, together with a relic believed to be from Jesus Christ’s crown of thorns, but it states that the authorities now believe that the cathedral has been saved from “total destruction”.

Notre-Dame is visited by a reported 30,000 people a day and 13 million people per year. Its destruction represents a global cultural loss. “This is just horrible,” Mohamed Megdoul, 33, a film producer and witness to the fire told The Times, speaking in tears. “A thousand years of history is being wiped away. This belonged to the whole world, and now it’s disappearing.”

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his sadness on Twitter. Other politicians, including Melania Trump, London Mayor Sadiq Khan, U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May, also shared their sadness on Twitter.
