In South Korea, smartphone cases come with rings tied on the back of the mobile phones to prevent clumsy owners from dropping them. This makes people look like they literally are     1     to their phones. In many of Seoul’s most Instagrammable coffee shops, couples on dates spend     2     more time looking at their screens than at each other. The results go beyond the potentially damaging consequences this may hold for romance.

Walk around the streets of Seoul or any other South Korean city, and there is a real risk of bumping into people whose eyes are     3     to their smartphone screens. Insurers     4     that around 370 traffic accidents annually are cause by pedestrains using smartphones. That figure does not include those who bump into lamp posts and the like while watching the latest cat videos.

The government     5     tried to fight the “smombie” (a combination of “smartphone” and “zombie”) epidemic (传染病) by distributing hundreds of stickers around cities appealing to people to “be safe” and to look up. This seems to have had little effect, so the South Korean-capital has recently     6     the stickers with sturdier (结实的) plastic boards.

Instead of appealing to people’s good     7    , the authorities have therefore tried to save them from being run over. Early last year, they began to     8     with floor-level traffic lights in smombie hotspots in central Seoul. Since then, the trail has been     9     around and beyond the capital. For the moment, the government is     10     old-fashioned eye-level pedestrian lights as well. But in the future, the way to look at a South Korean crossroads may be down.

Thibaud Binetruy was walking home Monday when he saw smoke rising in the distance. Notre Dame Cathedral, the beloved landmark in the heart of Paris, was in flames.

“It’s awful to see such a symbol disappear ng in front of you. It’s been there for so many years and in a few minutes half of it disappears... crazy,” Binetruy told CNN.

“Paris without Notre Dame... madness.” he added.

His words     1     the sorrow and disbelief felt by many Parisians as they watched the historic structure burn. CNN correspondent Hadas Gold said people crowded the banks of the Seine to gaze helplessly at the     2    .

Many Parisians, who grew up with the gothic structure towering over the river, burst into tears and hugged each other on the scene. The city was in deathly quietness, except for the helicopters and fire trucks. Katherine Finney said she and other onlookers couldn’t even     3     what was happening at first. But as the hostoric cathedral continued to burn, crowds let out helpless gasps and groans.

No other site represents France quite like Notre-Dame. It has given its name to one of the country’s literary masterpieces. Victor Hugo’s novel Hunchback of Notre Dame is known to the French simply as Notre Dame de Paris. The novel has been filmed     4     times, including an Academy Award-nominated Disney version in 1996.

The last time the cathedral suffered major damage was during the French Revolution, when statues of saints were hacked by terrorists. The building survived this uprising.as well as two world wars, largely undestroyed. It is impossible to overstate how shocking it is to watch such an enduring embodiment of our country burn. It is much more than a religious site. President Emmanuel Macron has expressed the shock of a “whole nation” at the fire. Notre Dame is “part of our common     5    .

The cathedral is home to     6     of priceless artifacts, artwork and relics collected over the centuries, each with their own story. But many people feared these treasures might be lost forever.

The Pars Fire Brigade tweeted that the cathedra’s stone construction has been “saved,” as have the “main works of art.” As more information emerges, what has been rescued from Notre Dame is becoming     7    . Yet many details, such as possible water damage from the operation to save the building, are still unclear.

The Crown of Thorns, which some believe was placed on the head of Jesus and which the cathedral calls its “most precious and most respected relic,” was rescued from the fire.

On Tuesday, Apple CEO Tim Cook tweeted that the company will make a donation to restore the iconic 850-year-old cathedral. He didn’t     8     on how much Apple is planning to donate. The company dd not immediately respond to a     9     for comment.

Some of France’s wealthiest families have made a funding effort to rebuild the Paris cathedral following the     10     fire.

We knew from radio that the outside world     4     (try) to look for the missing aircraft. However, the aircraft was white and blended in with the snow, making it impossible to be seen from the sky. Later, our hope was dead when we found out via our radio that the rescue effort ended.

Now climbing over the mountains ourselves to search for help seemed to be our only chance of survival.     5     the crash site was an awful place, with urine (尿) everywhere and smelling of death, I still wished to stay there. But my sister would give in to her injuries soon     6     we were not rescued. Thus, together with two other people, Canessa and Vizintin, I decided to walk through the icy wilderness for help. The mountain we were about to challenge was one with slopes so steep     7     it would scare away a team of expert climbers. Our ignorance provided our only chance.

We endured exhaustion and starvation and we had reached the top.

To our horror, we found nothing. Disappointed, we were about to give up hope     8     I spotted a valley at the base of the mountain and again we started making our way down the mountain.

6 . FIRE plays an important role in maintaining woodland ecosystems but fire introduced to undergrowth too often destroys too much; as humans remain the leading cause of wildfire, the responsibility to minimize the damage done falls on our shoulders. Here are four man-made fires that highlight the mission to fight fire and help to replant the world’s forests to counter the effects of deforestation.

Heilongjiang Fire—China, 1987

One of the largest fires ever to occur in history, the Heilongiiang Fire devoured three million acres of forest in the Greater Khingan Range. Reports attributed the fire’s easy spread to dry conditions in the area-but it was excessive logging activity without any effort to let the forest regrow that really let it rage unhindered. 34,000 soldiers were deployed to put the fire out, and 33,000 people were left homeless.

Wallow Fire—USA, 2011

Still the largest wildfire in Arizona’s history, Wallow got its name when two men accidentally started it while camping in the Bear Wallow Wilderness. Their campfire blew out of control and burned through over half a million acres of land, costing $72 million to extinguish, and a further $37 million to clean up and rebuild after the damage. More than 6,000 people had to be evacuated.

Uttarakhand fires—India, 2016

Throughout the year, man-made fires plagued the pine forests of the Uttarakhand Region. Widespread media coverage eventually spurred the government on to intervene, sending Indian Air Force helicopters to put them out. It’s suspected that these increased numbers could be the result of honey or seed collectors trying to frighten off animals.

Brandenburg Fire—Germany, 2018

Largely thanks to longer, dryer summers than usual—the forested area of Brandenburg, Germany, caught alight. Results of investigation suggested that evidence pointed to arson (纵火). Brandenburg lost nearly 1,000 acres of its forested land and three nearby villages had to be evacuated. A choking, smoky haze drifted twelve miles to Berlin, causing residents to have to shut themselves in their home.

iPhone 7 being investigated after surfer claims it set his car on fire

Apple is investigating a report from an Australian man who claimed his iPhone 7 caught fire and destroyed his car, the company said on Friday.

Surfer Mat Jones told Channel 7 News that he     1     ( go ) into water off a New South Wales beach and left his new iPhone 7 bought last week,     2     ( wrap) in a pair of trousers in his car on the beach.

He said that     3     he returned from the water he saw smoke rising from the car. “As I looked into my car,I could not see inside the car, like all the windows were just black.”

A video footage(影像) taken from another phone showed the front seats, dashboard and stick melted and charred, and Jones said that he felt “pretty much like a big heat wave just came out of the car”.

Eventually the surfer was able to remove     4     was left of his clothes. “Ash was just coming from inside the pants. Once the pants were unwrapped, the phone was just melting inside.”

Jones said that he had not dropped the phone or physically damaged it,     5     happened to a Sydney man who fell off his bike and suffered burns from an iPhone. He also said that he had not used     6     non-Apple charging device.

A spokeswoman for Apple said the company was investigating the complaint. “We’re in touch with the customer and we’re looking into it,” she said.

On an otherwise ordinary afternoon in mid-December, the Hakata to Tokyo express pulled into Negoya and a thousand passengers were ordered     1     the train. The burning smell and unusual sound turned out to be cracks in the chassis(底盘).

It was the first time that the Shinkansen(新干线),the country’s symbol of industrial power and“made in Japan”engineering quality,     2    (give)way to an officially called“serious incident”. Once upon a time, the cracks would have been unthinkable; the nation—    3    the outside world—has long been conditioned to think of Japanese manufacturing as perfect. But after suffering a succession of different scandals. Japan’s problem is that imperfection is far less untbinkable than it     4     be.

The bullet train breakdown marks the peak of months of public admissions by some of Japan’s greatest names—including Nissan Motor. Subaru, Toray Industries, Kobe Steel and Mitsubishi Materials—    5     they have either been cheating on quality tests or faking documents     6    (sell)products of a lower quality than stated. For an industrial economy that has built its global fame on its reputation for quality, these are nerve-racking times.

No one thought that Japanese companies were basically more honest than their competitors around the world, says one former Toshiba executive,     7     there was an assumption both inside and outside Japan that everyone on the factory floor was devoted to the perfection of monozukuri.     8     craftsmanship that represents what is arguably the proudest Japanese corporate boasts.“That assumption is     9     has taken the heaviest beating,”he said.

9 . On the morning of September 11,2001, computer sales manager Michael Hingson, who is blind, went early to his office on the 78th floor of the North Tower of the World Trade Center to prepare for a meeting. As Michael worked, his guide dog, a Labrador retriever     1     (name) Roselle, dozed by his feet.

At 8:46 a.m., a tremendous boom rocked the building, eliciting screams throughout the floor. Michael grabbed Roselle, trusting that the dog     2     (lead) him out of the danger, and they navigated their way to a stairwell.

“Forward,” Michael instructed, and they descended the first of 1,463 steps to the lobby.     3     about ten floors, the stairwell grew crowded and hot, and the fumes from jet fuel had made it hard to breathe.

When a woman became crazy, yelling that they wouldn’t make it. Roselle accompanied the woman     4     she finally petted the dog, calmed herself, and kept walking down the stairs.

Around the 30th floor, firefighters started passing Michael on their way up. Each one stopped to offer him assistance. He declined but let Roselle be petted,     5     (provide) many of the firefighters with     6     would be their last experience of unconditional love.

After about 45 minutes, Michael and Roselle reached     7     looby, and 15 minutes later, they emerged outside to a scene of chaos. Suddenly the police yelled for everyone to run as the South Tower began to collapse.

Michael kept a tight grip on Roselle’s harness, using voice and hand commands, as they ran to a street opposite the crumbling tower. The street bounced like a trampoline, and “a deafening roar” like a hellish freight train filled the air. Hours later, Michael and Roselle made it home safely. At that moment, they thought they were     8     (lucky ) in the world.

In the months that followed, Michael became a spokesperson for Guide Dogs for the Blind, the organization by which Roselle     9     (train). Together, they spread their message about trust and teamwork.

In 2004, Roselle developed a blood disorder,     10     prevented her from guiding and touring. She died in 2011.

“I’ve had many other dogs,” Michael wrote, “but there is only one Roselle.”

10 . Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s)of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

As we all know that the biggest safety threat which faces airlines today may not be a terrorist attack with a gun, but the man with the portable computer in business class during the flight. In the last 15 years, pilots have reported well over 100 incidents that could have been caused by electromagnetic (电磁)interference. The source of this interference remains unconfirmed, but increasingly, some experts are pointing the blame at portable device such as portable computers, radio and cassette players as well as mobile phones.

RICA, an organization which advises the aviation(航空)industry, has recommended that all airlines should ban such devices from being used during"critical "stages of flights, particularly take-off and landing. Some experts have gone even further, calling for a total ban during all fights. Currently, rules on using these devices are left up to individual airlines. And although many of the airlines prohibit passengers from using such equipment especially during take-off and landing, most are reluctant to enforce a total ban, given that many passengers want to work during flights.

The difficulty is predicting how electromagnetic fields might affect an aircraft’s computers. Some experts know that portable devices send radiation which affects those wavelengths that aircraft use for navigation and communication. But because they have not been able to reproduce these effects in a lab, they really have no idea whether the interference might be dangerous or not.

The fact that aircraft may be vulnerable(易受损的) to interference raises the risk that terrorists may use radio systems in order to damage navigation equipment. As worrying, though, is the passenger who can’t hear the instructions clearly to turn off his radio because the music is too loud. So it still takes time to impose a ban on the use of portable devices during flights. (total words 311)
