3 . On August 5 just after 7.30 pm, Mike Estepa suffered a massive heart attack. The crazy cyclist was 40 kilometres into his Sunday ride when he stopped by the side of the road to text his family saying he’d be home in about 30 minutes. Moments later, he was lying in the ditch, unconscious.
Larissa Arthur was driving back to Calgary from a hike in Field, B. C. with a friend. It was a warm and sunny day, and the two were chatting when a flush of yellow caught Arthur's eyes, She immediately pulled off the road.
As Arthur approached the figure. she feared the worst: Estepa was covered in ants and exhibited no signs of life. There was no pulse and he wasn't breathing." says Arthur. A bystander called 911 and Arthur, a registered nurse, started chest compressions. She and two other drivers took turns carrying out CPR for the next 15 minutes before medical teams arrived and whisked Estepa away.
Two days later, when Estepa woke up in the hospital, he was shocked to learn he had gone into cardiac arrest (心脏骤停). How did this happen, and ,why was he lucky enough to have survived? He was full of gratitude and needed to speak with the woman who had saved him, whom he named his "angel” .
“It was emotional,” says Arthur of her meeting with Estepa a few weeks later. Saving his life had extra importance for her: the bike she was returning from that day was one of 100 she's planned to honour her father, who died in 2017 after he fell during a hike that Arthur was meant to be on. "I couldn't save my father's life." Arthur says, "but this was a chance for me to save someone. "

5 . PARIS-A scaffolding(脚手架) firm that has worked on the roof of Notre Dame said some of its workers had smoked on the site, but ruled out that a cigarette butt(烟蒂) might have started the fire that destroyed the cathedral’s oak-framed roof last week.
A spokesman for family-owned Le Bras Freres, confirming a report in French weekly Le Canard Emchaine, told Reuters that some workers of its Europe Echafaudage scaffolding unit had informed police that they had "sometimes “smoked the scaffolding, despite a smoking ban on the site.
“We blame it. But the fire started inside the building... so for company Le Bras Freres this is not a hypothesis(假设 ), it was not a cigarette butt that set Notre Dame de Paris on fire, "Le Bras Freres spokesman Mare Eskenazi said. The Canard Enchaine reported that police had found the remains of seven cigarette butts in the burnt-out cathedral. “This is not wrong, "said a source close to the investigation, who declined all other comment. Eskemazi said it was impossible to set a log on fire with a cigarette butt and questioned how cigarette butts could have been found on the site. " If cigarette butts have survived the fire, I do not know what material they were made of, "he said
Europe Echaffaudage also ruled out the possibility that the fire might have been started by an electricity incident at one of the two lifts on the site. " The lifts' electricity was perfectly within specifications and well maintained. "he said. He added that the two lifts were on the outside of the building, situated at 45 and 65 meters from the base of the spire( 尖顶), where the first smoke and flames had been spotted and that the workers had cut the power to the lifts at 17: 50 when they had left the site for the day.
The Canard Enchaine also reported that electrical wiring ran through the roof of the cathedral, but the church administration denied that safety norms had not been respected. “Nothing was ever done without the approval of the state.....There were no wires dangling everything was properly installed, "Notre Dame spokesman Andre Finot said. In 2012,electrical engines had been installed to sound the bells in the spire.

6 . If you’ve made a routine of a daily walk, congratulations! You’re getting many benefits of a walk. But there’s one simple mistake that could be putting your life at risk. Almost 129,000 pedestrians were injured, and 5,376 were killed in traffic crashes in the United States in 2015, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC).
Luckily, there are some steps you can take to stay safe on foot. Sure, you drive on the right side of the road in the US, but that’s not where you should be as a pedestrian.
Seems like it couldn’t make much difference.
On the other hand, when you’re walking against traffic, you can see the cars heading toward you. Facing those vehicles lets you see danger coming and get out of the way if necessary, and you aren’t putting your life in the hands of every driver who passes.
A.If there’s a sidewalk available, you should always use it |
B.Where it is convenient and clear, make sure to take the route |
C.Next time you go for a walk or run, face the traffic and keep watchful |
D.You may be taken aback by such a big difference between the choices |
E.Look backwards and forwards all the time when you walk along the traffic |
F.This means one crash-related pedestrian death every 1.6 hours |
G.But a study of car accidents between 2006 and 2010 would argue otherwise |
7 . A Russian spacecraft traveling to the International Space Station Thursday had to make an emergency landing when a rocket engine failed to fire. It was the latest in a recent series of failures for the Russian space program, which is also used by the U.S. to carry its astronauts to the station.
United States astronaut Nick Hague and Russian astronaut Alexei Ovchinin landed safely about 20 kilometers from Dzhezkazgan in Kazakhstan. The city is about 450 kilometers from the Russia’s Baikonur space center, which Russia operates through an agreement with the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Both the U.S. space agency NASA and Russia’s Roscosmos reported that the two were quickly recovered from the landing area by rescue crews. A spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin said, “Thank God the crew is alive” after they had landed safely.
About two minutes after launching, the three-stage Soyuz booster rocket suffered an unspecified failure of its second stage. Russia’s TASS news agency said the capsule carrying the two men separated from the troubled rocket safely. This caused the capsule to drop very sharply into the Earth’s atmosphere. Parachutes(降落伞)helped slow the returning capsule. Search and rescue teams were sent to recover the crew.
Russia’s RIA news agency reported that Russia has immediately put off all manned space launches after the failure. Roscosmos head Dmitry Rogozin said he had ordered a state commission to carry out an investigation into what went wrong. He said Russia will share all relevant information with the U.S.
The TASS news agency said that the ISS crew has enough supplies and that the failed launch will not affect operations.
The U.S. and other nations have depended on Russia to carry astronauts to the ISS since the retirement of the Space Shuttle program in 2011. In coming years, American aerospace companies SpaceX, with its Dragon 2, and Boeing, with its Starliner, are expected to return to space.

I can well remember an incident that happened on a rain Sunday afternoon. I was waiting for the green lights that a girl of about ten was knocked down by a pass car. The car then drives off quickly. A man immediately rushed to the girl to give him first aid, but I joined in without any hesitation. Luckily she was not bad injured and we sent her to the near hospital.
I am proud of what I did for the girl. As member of the society, I am aware of that being responsible is what it takes to make a better community.

One Saturday morning in about 9:00, I was walking to a supermarket nearby while suddenly I heard a loud crash just about 10 meters away. I went up and find that two taxis were badly damaged, with one door of a car knock off. One driver was bleeding heavily and other was trapped in the taxi. As soon as passer-by around saw what had happened, they were all came to offer help. Soon the police and an ambulance arrived. Judging from the stopping tracks on the road, it was obviously that the two taxi drivers were driving too fast as both of them were eager to taking more passengers. I think, when travelling, it is important to obey traffic rules, because caring about others’ lives mean caring about our own lives.
